One of the guards moved into view. It was hard to track him in here. They all wore long dark shirts and pants with a black beret, despite the jungle heat. The guard seemed on edge, scanning the room, his rifle held at his hip. He turned to walk away, but then stopped. Something had made him suspicious. He started searching the room. He walked to the far side of the tunnel, and checked the jeeps first. He moved down towards the door, pushing on them to make sure they were still locked. He started to move back around, towards MacGyver and Sam. MacGyver motioned to Sam to start moving behind the crates to get behind the guard. MacGyver would try to distract him from the front. Sam nodded, and started crawling as quietly as he could. The guard paused half way between MacGyver and Sam. Slowly, they crept towards him, hoping to take him by surprise. Unfortunately, the guard seemed to have very good hearing. Turning on a flashlight, the guard caught MacGyver directly in the beam. For a moment MacGyver froze, blinded.
"MacGyver?" asked a high voice in disbelief. Blinking, MacGyver's vision cleared just in time to make out Riss' shocked face, before realization dawned on it, and she spun around elbowing Sam in the face as he tried to sneak up behind her. Sam fell to his knees, clutching his nose as he tried to keep from making a sound. MacGyver rushed forward, but Riss leveled her gun at him.
"Stop" she hissed. MacGyver stopped, his hands raised above his head. He looked down at Sam. Riss stepped back and kept her gun leveled at the two of them as Sam rose to his feet. She looked worriedly towards the entrance. "Get back. Move back towards the wall," she whispered. Keeping their hands up, they stepped back. Riss switched her flashlight to black light. "Just stay where you are," she whispered. She pulled a cloth out of her pocket and tossed it to Sam. "You might want to take care of that bleeding," she said, putting both hands back on her gun.
"Riss," whispered MacGyver. "What are you going to do?"
"What are you two doing here?" she asked. "This is the last place you should be."
"Yeah, I know," said MacGyver irritatedly. "This wasn't exactly my idea."
Riss looked over at Sam. "Should have known. Do you always land yourself in trouble? Is that just, what you do? For fun?"
Sam mopped up his bloody nose. "Believe me Clarissa, you are far from my idea of fun."
Riss deflated a bit. She adjusted her grip on the gun. "Put your hands down. You look ridiculous. Just, stay there. Don't try anything."
Sam looked surprised.
Riss shifted uncomfortably. "I assume you knew my Father was here."
"We had our suspicions," admitted MacGyver.
"How much do you know?" asked Riss
MacGyver looked to the side.
"Who else knows he's here?"
MacGyver looked to Sam and shook his head.
Riss shifted her eyes to Sam. She narrowed here eyes.
"Pete wouldn't send you two here without backup. Are they close?"
Sam and MacGyver stayed silent.
"Are they nearby?" asked Riss, a touch of desperation in her voice.
Sam looked her up and down. "Black suits you. Seems to be a popular color for Murdocs."
Riss sighed and uncocked her gun, slinging it over her shoulder.
Sam gave MacGyver a startled look.
Riss said nothing. She just stood there, glancing towards the tunnel entrance.
"You're mother's well," offered MacGyver.
"And the baby?" she asked.
Sam gasped. MacGyver had only admitted to him a few months ago that Aaron and Jennifer had gotten married under their new identities and we're now expecting. That was all the details Pete had given him.
"That's not supposed to be common knowledge," said MacGyver.
Riss chuckled. "Then your little Phoenix Foundation should have better cyber-security. Luckily, I was the one in charge of the reports. I was able to delete that detail before it got handed over to Dad. Murdoc doesn't take betrayal lightly."
"She's due soon," said MacGyver.
"Boy or girl?" asked Riss.
"I don't know," replied MacGyver.
Riss nodded. "Do you have a way out of here?" she asked.
MacGyver and Sam exchanged a look.
Just then, they suddenly heard the sounds of gunfire off in the distance, followed by the sound of rocket launchers and more gunfire.
Riss cursed under her breath. "What have you done?"
MacGyver looked panicked. "Something must have gone wrong."
The compound came alive. Guards started running and shouting.
Riss looked at MacGyver and Sam. "Stay here," she ordered.
She rushed to the tunnel entrance as another guard came rushing up to it. "Riss?" he called.
"Here," she said running up. "What's happened?"
"Soldiers spotted in the woods."
"Did the Commander double-cross us?" she asked.
"He says no, but Murdoc's not taking any chances. We're doing a full sweep."
"Understood, it's clear in here. Have you checked up by the fence?"
"They're on their way now. Lock the entrance doors to the tunnel, and fall in with J squad."
"Understood," said Riss. The guard rushed off and Riss started closing the doors. She stayed inside though. Walking up to a pad by the doors, she punched in a number, and then let it scan her eyes. The door's locks bolted into place automatically. She clicked another button, and the tunnel's dim lights turned on, making it easier to see.
She turned back towards MacGyver and Sam as soon as she finished.
"Well now you've gone and done it," she muttered. "Would it have killed you all to actually be sneaky? Are the fellas out there as bad at this as you two are?"
Sam just stared at her speechless. A lot of emotions were going through him right now, and he worried if he opened his mouth they would all come tumbling out. It was MacGyver who answered.
"Riss, can you get us out of here?"
Riss pursed her lips, but then sighed. "Yes, you idiots. But we've got to move fast. There is a monitor watching all the automatic locks around the compound. Once I open the mid doors over there, they'll know. If we're lucky, they'll be confused and take some time to confirm whether or not that was supposed to happen before we get to the end doors on the other side." While talking, she hurried over to a jeep and pulled out some keys from around her neck.
MacGyver walked up to the door Riss had just locked. "Is there a way to fry the console so they can't open this?"
"Yes, but that will just alert them sooner. From the computer, they can see who opens and closes what doors and they can reset who is allowed to. If they get suspicious and reset the end doors before we get to them, we're trapped inside."
Sam walked over to his Dad. "I don't trust her."
"I don't blame you Sam, but I don't think we have a choice. Besides, she could have already handed us over if she wanted to."
"It could just be a game. Another one of Murdoc's sick games."
MacGyver clenched his jaw. "I know. It passed through my head too. But we've got no choice right now. However, I do think we can do something about this door. I need something gunky." Sam pulled out several sticks of gum from his belt.
Riss came over. "What are you doing? We've got to go."
"I know," replied MacGyver while he and Sam chewed the gum quickly. "But I'm hoping to gunk up the mechanisms a bit. At least slow them down if they come after us."
Riss nodded. "Fine, but we need to go now." They hurried over to the Jeep. Riss moved towards the driver seat, but Sam grabbed her elbow. "I'll drive."
"What, no I know the way."
"It's a tunnel." replied Sam. "We're going straight, and once we're out, I know the way we're driving."
"This isn't a motorcycle Sam."
Sam leaned in close. "And if you think I'm trusting you at the wheel while my Dad's life is in the balance, you've got another thing coming."
Riss bristled, and looked ready to snap something back, but just then MacGyver climbed into the passenger seat and looked over at them. "What's the holdup?"
Riss looked up at him, and then back at Sam. Sam could almost swear she looked guilty, and for a moment he felt bad, but he pushed that down. Time enough to figure out Riss and her twisted morality once they got out of this.
"Nothing," said Riss jumping into the back. "Drive towards the mid doors. Quick."
They drove for a few meters before they came to the first set of doors. Riss jumped out. "Keep it running. I'll jump back in as you drive through." She got to the doors and started punching numbers into the key pad. Sam's hands tightened on the steering wheel.
MacGyver put his hand on Sam's arm. "Steady," he whispered.
Sam nodded. Maybe he knew that deep down, Riss wasn't like her father. But he wasn't sure Riss knew that, and that's what made him nervous.
Riss scanned her eyes and fingerprints the door opened. She ran to the other side and waved Sam to move through. As he passed the doors, Riss shut and locked them, jumping into the jeep.
"Step on it," she said. "We've got to get to the other doors before they reset them."
"I thought this tunnel was only a mile?" said MacGyver.
Riss' brow furrowed. "Who told you that?"
MacGyver raised his eyebrows at her.
"Fine, don't tell me," she replied. "But this tunnel is closer to 12 miles. Someone either gave you terrible information, or lied to your face, and that makes me nervous, so step on it."
Sam nodded and accelerated. He could feel the tension. If Jin had been lying to them and was working for Murdoc, there was no telling what could be coming behind them.
The tunnel wasn't a straight shot either. It turned and curved, and with the dim lights, Sam had to be careful not to crash. Just as the doors came into sight, they heard a clanging sound behind them. Riss sat up straight. "I think they just opened the mid-doors. Hurry. These are the last doors, but even if we get through them, there's about 2 miles left to the entrance, and then we still need to lose them in the jungle."
"We?" asked Sam as he stopped at the doors and Riss jumped out.
"Either you think I'm stupid enough to stick around here after helping you escape," she said as she typed a number into the keypad, "or that I'm smart enough to think of a story that could fool my father. Either way, you'd be wrong."
Riss laid her hand on the finger print pad and held her eyes up to the scanner. It started to hum, and Sam started to shift the gears, when sudenly there was a flash from the pad, and Riss cried out in pain, collapsing to the ground at the foot of the door. Sam jumped out of the jeep, with MacGyver close behind. Riss was huddled on the ground, her face red and one hand cradled against her. MacGyver lifted her up gently and looked at her face.
"Riss," he said gently. "Open your eyes." Riss gasped and shook her head. MacGyver reached down and pulled out her hand. It was red, like she'd touched a flaming hot plate. Her fingertips were even burnt. Riss gasped again. "It's no good, they reset it. I can't see."
Sam stared in horror at the pad. The slow horror spreading through his mind as he realized that Riss had known beforehand what would happen if the lock had been reset before she got to it.
"It's supposed to be temporary," Riss added, more too herself, "but it's not exact. There's no way to tell yet." She grimaced as MacGyver wrapped her hand and eyes with bandages. "Leave it," she said. "We've got to find a way out of here. And fast. Just shooting the pad won't do it. It'll just cause more locks to slide in place."
MacGyver looked to the console. "Is there a way to hotwire it?"
"Yes," replied Riss, "But you've got to have just the right touch and timing. Even on a good day I can barely do it, and this is definitely not a good day," she groaned through her gritted teeth.
MacGyver reached up and yanked the cover off the pad and console. "No, but you can tell me. Now focus Riss. Imagine it's right in front of you. Tell me what to do."
Riss took same shaky breaths.
"Sam, get the car started," said MacGyver.
Sam looked up at him and down at Riss.
"I've got her, now hurry."
Riss started to give directions. "Pull out the red wire and peel back the rubber. Split it in two and connect it to the green and white wires. Wait! Don't connect it yet. Split it, but then pull out the yellow wire. Split it as well."
Sam jumped into the jeep and turned the ignition. He could hear the sound of an engine coming from down the tunnel. Maybe more than one. He looked back over towards MacGyver at the console and Riss huddled on the ground. She was so calm. He hated to admit it, but she really was incredible. Murdoc's training was incredible. Sam turned his head as the sound of engines got closer. "They're coming!" he shouted.
"Got it!" shouted MacGyver as the doors slid open. He scooped up Riss and set her down in the back. Sam glanced back at her. Her hands reached out, clasping around the handle of her gun and clutching it to her.
They heard a shout from down the tunnel.
"MACGYYYY-VER" called out a sing-song voice. Riss' breath caught in her throat.
Sam floored the gas. They shot through the doors, but just as they did they felt a thud in the back. Looking behind, they both saw Riss standing by the doors. She'd jumped out of the car as it passed. She stood in front of the doors, her gun in her hand. Sam hit the breaks, just as three more jeeps came wheeling around the turn in the tunnel. Murdoc stood up in the front one.
"Riss!" he called out. Riss braced her machine gun against her hip and started firing, aiming low. She blew out the tires in one of the jeeps, causing it roll. The other jeeps stopped in their tracks, their occupants taking cover.
"Riss!" called out Sam. Riss turned and shot the console. As the doors slid shut, she turned and started firing towards the jeeps again, holding her father and his men back. Sam jumped out of the jeep and ran to the door, but it closed before he got close. MacGyver pulled the jeep up behind him.
Sam turned to him. "Open it! She showed you how!"
MacGyver shook his head "I can't". They could still hear the gunfire. "When we were hot-wiring it, she told me if I messed up and triggered the emergency locks, there was no way to get past them without the main computer. She's locked us out."
Sam looked back at the door. "And her in with them." Sam banged on the door.
"Sam," shouted MacGyver, "we can't do anything if we get caught. We need to meet up at the rendezvous." Sam shook his head, but MacGyver reached over and pulled him into the jeep, holding him in while he floored the gas pedal and zoomed down the tunnel. Sam pulled, but MacGyver held him tight. As they shot out of the tunnel and into the jungle, the gunfire died away. Sam choked.
MacGyver turned the jeep into the jungle. "I figure we've got half an hour tops before they get those doors open, and we need to ditch this jeep and trek it through the jungle on foot. We'll have to be careful to keep our head start."
MacGyver looked over at Sam as he sagged in the seat.
"Sam. Sam? Sam, are you listening?"
Sam looked over at his Dad. "Do you think he'll kill her?"
MacGyver looked ahead. "I don't know."
"I didn't ask what you knew. I asked what you thought. You know Murdoc better than anyone. Do you think he'll kill her for helping us escape?"
MacGyver looked at Sam. He considered lying to him, but he knew Sam would be able to tell.
"I think, that right now, Murdoc's priority will be trying to catch us."
"And if he can't?" asked Sam.
MacGyver let out a deep breath. "I'm not sure even he knows what he'll do to her yet."
