Author's Note:
I've never done this before, but I wanted to give a little shout out to one of my readers, Nancy Wetter, who always figures out where I'm going with my story ahead of time. You figured me out again! (; Thank you for reading and leaving so many kind reviews!
I would also like to dedicate this chapter to a very sweet reader, named Margaret Redmon. I don't know her but she leaves the sweetest reviews. (And, if anyone out there does know her, please tell her about this, for me!)
In one of her reviews, she shared a snippet of her story - of loving and then losing her sweet husband, Tommy, after 52 years of marriage. Margaret, I just want to thank you for sharing. I have only been married 17 years, but I wanna be like you when I grow up...still loving and appreciating my husband, after fifty + years of marriage, and even after he's gone.
Margaret, you are an inspiration. So, this chapter is dedicated to you and your true love, Tommy.
Chapter 92. His Birthday
At 7:30 sharp, Julia walked into the livery. Of course, Nathan was already there and had saddled both Newton and Lucy. Julia came in silently, and Nathan didn't turn around right away, but was busy putting last minute things into Newton's saddlebags. Julia set her basket down and waited, watching him.
Nathan was dressed in a soft white cotton shirt that buttoned down the front. It seemed to be his favorite casual shirt and he wore it often when he was off work. And of course, it was all open at the collar. In fact, today he had left the top three buttons undone. The sleeves were rolled up and his arm muscles worked magic as he moved. He was wearing brown slacks and suspenders and the combination was just so inherently him. That soft curl had fallen over his forehead, probably as he bent to check something, and he had yet to put it back in place. How she longed to step forward and put her hands into his soft, wavy hair. But still, she waited. She just took him in.
How such a wonderful, handsome, honorable man had reached the ripe age of 32 without being snatched up was still a mystery and a miracle. It was almost obscene actually, and spoke to Julia of the foolish, misplaced priorities of the women of their day. How any woman could pass up this treasure, was beyond her comprehension. But, there was also another possibility, another explanation for Nathan's singleness. Perhaps the Lord had preserved him, just for her. He had known just what Nathan needed, and just what Julia needed, and well, the answer to each of their needs and wants, was each other. So yes, perhaps the Lord, in his goodness and infinite wisdom, had preserved them for each other, which was more likely the case. And, something inside her rejoiced, because they had found each other now. And this relationship, this love was another unfathomable treasure that Julia would spend the rest of her life being grateful for. Every time she held him, or kissed him, or even looked at him, just as she was doing now, her heart would overflow with thanksgiving. Her heart overflowed even now. And finally...she moved.
As she came towards him, he caught sight of her out of the corner of his eye, stopped what he was doing, and turned. He started to say something but it didn't even register, and well, she cut him off. She took to her tip toes and reached her hands up to cup his face, and she looked deep into his eyes. Their crystal blue depths were searching, questioning, but they were met only by her deep, abiding, ever-promising love. She let her hands go gently to the nape of his neck, and she pulled his head down closer. And, she kissed him. As soon as their lips met, the fire was lit. In fact, she was pretty sure it was still lit since the day before - ever since the flour incident. The look of surprise on his face morphed into happiness, right before her eyes. And, that's when her own eyes finally fluttered closed. She took in every bit about him as he kissed her back - his soft lips, his tenderness, his sweet taste. And she deepened the kiss. She wanted him to know how she felt, to feel it to his very core. His arms came firm around her and pulled her closer. The kiss became deep and passionate and she let her hands roam into his hair. A soft moan came from deep in his throat, and like an involuntary reflex, she pressed her body closer still. His arms became tighter, tighter as the kiss became tender and emotional, conveying every bit of love she felt. And, that love ran deep. He must of felt it too, because he made an attempt to move even closer, though there was no space left between them. So, he just pulled her in tighter, pressing in to her. Finally, when they were both breathless, Nathan pulled back and rested his forehead against hers. Their breath mingled and he looked at her, searching, inquiring, as he struggled to slow the cadence of his racing heart.
"Happy Birthday, my love." She whispered, and the soft corners of his mouth slowly turned up into a smile, though it was a crooked, lopsided one.
He whispered back to her. "I should have a birthday more often."
And she smiled.
She had an answer for that. "When you marry me, Lawman, I promise, we can celebrate your birthday everyday."
He liked that. Very much. And, he had his own answer. "Mmmm...Then marry me tomorrow."
Oh, she had one even better. "Marry me today." How she longed for it.
"Don't tempt me, Miss Matthews. I know exactly where Joseph Canfield is, right at this very moment." He told her, again with his crooked smile.
Julia softly nodded, though deep down, she really wanted to ask him what he was waiting for. But, she didn't...she decided it better not to tempt him. After that kiss, he might very well take her straight to Joseph.
Nathan wasn't done with their intimate moment. He brought one hand up to her cheek, and tenderly traced her freckles. It was his turn to look deep into her eyes, and Julia was certain, he could see straight into the heart of her. He searched her depths and loved her intensely. Even her hard places, her rough edges. "Do you remember the first time we rode together?"
"How could I ever forget?" She answered in a whisper.
"Maybe we don't need two horses." Nathan told her low. He wanted to be close to her, and they were engaged after all. And, they would be on the trail, and away from the public eye, for most of the day.
Julia saw where this was going. As much as she loved to ride a horse, she wanted to be close to him even more. Anything to be close to him. "Yes."
Nathan smiled and nodded, happy. There she was saying yes to him before he even asked. Her hands were still playing in the hair at the nape of his neck, and it was incredibly hard to think straight. So, he just leaned forward and kissed her again. Slow and tender this time. Exploring and enjoying and knowing.
When he finally pulled back, she let her hands fall down from his hair, to his neck, and trail down to his chest. He gazed at her a moment longer and touched her face one more time. And then he slowly stepped back and began to unsaddle Lucy. Julia moved to put everything from her basket into Newton's saddlebags.
Though, Julia wondered about something when she saw Ginger's empty stall. "Where's Ginger?"
"Dad took her up to the land already." Nathan answered, as he worked. "Allie really wanted to go, too. But, she has an early shift this morning. So, I promised I would take her up tomorrow."
When Lucy was put back in her stall, Nathan led Newton out, and Julia followed.
Julia looked at Nathan, and there was no shyness as there had been all those months ago. "Front or back?" She asked him.
Nathan swung effortlessly up into the saddle, and scooted forward. "Let's try behind. I think you will be more comfortable…And I will be less distracted." Julia laughed out loud when he used that word. He removed his foot from the stirrup, and she planted hers firmly inside. He put out his hand, she hooked her left arm over his, and swung up and behind easily. It was so much easier in her riding culottes. She scooted up close behind him, and wrapped her arms firmly around his middle. She snuggled close and looked over his tall shoulder. Her face was just next to his neckline, and she could feel every muscle in his back.
Nathan hadn't been ready for the rush that came from her closeness. His stomach was in knots when he finally asked, "All set?"
Her soft whisper just next to his ear made every hair on his body hum. "All set."
With a click, Nathan put Newton into motion. He placed one of his large hands overtop her arms, which were firmly across his middle. Once they were out of town, he put Newton into a canter. The rhythm of the horse lulled them ever closer together as they held onto each other.
Nathan took the right hand turn that led towards their land, then he turned left to enter the property. When they came to the field of wildflowers, he slowed to let her enjoy it. The flowers were still beautiful but starting to finish their season, everyday wilting more and more in the summer heat. When they came to the other side of that first meadow, Nathan turned left and headed to the clearing where the house was to be built. The crew was already assembled there, along with about 3 or 4 wagons full of heavy equipment, shovels, and other materials. Already unloaded was a concrete mixer with a huge turn crank. One wagon was loaded with a huge water tank, bags of concrete, and gravel.
Eight or ten men were gathered, and their horses had been tethered far over to the right, past the stream. Archie was standing among them, at the back of a wagon, with a map of the plot of land rolled out before them.
Nathan gave Julia a hand and vacated the stirrup, and she used both to dismount. He swung down next to her, and tied up Newton. When he turned back to Julia, he wore that big happy smile that she loved so much.
"Our dreams are coming true, Miss Matthews." Nathan told her, with anticipation and excitement.
Though, Julia stood still and corrected him. "Lawman, my dream will come true when I become Mrs. Nathan Grant." She wanted that to be clear as day. "The rest…all this," she said with a little hand motion, "is just a bonus."
At her confession, his happy smile moved up into his eyes and made those crinkles at their corners. He stepped close and took her hand. He weaved their fingers together, and held on tight. "I knew I should have taken you straight to Joseph."
Julia felt her own smile become playful, and she shrugged. "Well, it is your birthday all day long."
"Is that a challenge, Miss Matthews?" He asked her, playfully taking one step closer.
"Nathan!" Archie called to him from where the group of workmen was gathered together.
But, Nathan didn't budge. His gaze stayed fixed on Julia, like he didn't hear anything else in the world. She knew he was teasing, and giggled at him. "Nathan, stop being so distracted. Your Dad is calling you."
"Oh, right." He chuckled at her, and looked in his father's direction. "Coming!" He called out. But before he moved, he brought his gaze back around to Julia and told her. "Don't tempt me too much, Miss Matthews." Her breath caught in her throat as soon as his hand made contact with her cheek, and gently caressed her skin. "I am desperately in love with you, and I may not be able to resist."
Julia didn't speak but nodded at him. He turned slowly and led her over to the group of men. When they got close, though, Julia let go and let him enter the group, in order to speak with them and give instructions. He stood tall as sure as he answered their questions and directed them. He pointed to several things on the map that was laid out before Archie. When the workmen were satisfied, they grabbed their tools.
First, however, Nathan led one dark-skinned gentleman over to Julia. "Miss Matthews, I'd like to introduce you to our foreman, James Wilson. He'll be our point person on everything about the foundation and framing." Then Nathan turned to James. "Mr. Wilson, this is my fiancé, Miss Julia Matthews."
"Hello. It's nice to meet you, Miss Matthews." He told her. He was very tall and strong, and had kind eyes. Julia thought his heritage must be partially indigenous. Though, he spoke with a strong Canadian accent.
"It's nice to meet you too, Mr. Wilson." Julia told him.
"Julia, anything related to the house, or the build, we take to Mr. Wilson. Then he takes care of it from there, deals with his crew." Nathan told her.
"Okay. Well, we are looking forward to working with you." Julia told him.
Mr. Wilson looked back towards the swing. "First thing, Inspector Grant, we need to move that swing." He told him. Nathan nodded and they walked together, to the swing. "Where shall we put it?"
"First off, please call me Nathan." He told him, and Mr. Wilson nodded. "Now, the swing is sitting exactly where we want the porch. If that helps you any, for the orientation of the foundation."
Mr. Wilson looked around and found it a mighty fine placement. "Seems right to me…Nathan." He tried it out. "Will be just fine."
Now where to move the swing? Nathan looked over to the right and to the left. Then he had an idea. "Mr. Wilson, what if we put the swing over to the left, so Julia can still enjoy the view? Will it be out of the way for your team?"
"Nathan, please call me James." He gave a good gander and surmised that would work. "Seems fine to me." James told him.
"Okay then, James. Let's put it over to the left and orient it so we can enjoy the view, and perhaps still have some vantage point on the build." Nathan told him. That was doable. So, James called a few guys over and they had the swing moved in a matter of minutes.
Then, Nathan got out of the way and let James run his crew. He led Julia over to the swing, and they sat down together. Nathan put his arm around her, and she snuggled in close. Then, Nathan put the swing in motion.
They watched together as the crew broke the ground. The men brought shovels, and a big crank-looking machine that they turned as a team. And, they dug down far.
Nathan was suddenly quiet and introspective, and Julia just sat with him. Finally, he asked her softly. "Is it okay if I pray, Jules?"
Julia nodded her head, and he did. He prayed first for the safety of the crew, and for everything to be built well; that the foundation would be set strong. He prayed for the house, that it would be a place of peace and comfort, and a place where love could abide and grow. He prayed for their life together; that it would be long and full, and marked by unconditional love and happiness.
It was a sweet prayer that touched Julia very deeply. Nathan was a man of integrity, and Julia counted herself blessed.
The crew was hard at work, and there was not much more to see for the moment. So, after a long turn on the swing, Nathan asked if she would keep riding with him.
"Shall we go up to your meadow, my love?" She asked. It was, after all, his birthday.
"I was hoping you would agree to go up there." Nathan told her with his crooked smile. He took her hand again, wove their fingers together, and walked her back to Newton.
Though, on the way, he passed by and checked in with James. Then they passed by and spoke to Archie, who would stay for a little while, in case.
They mounted Newton just as before, and headed on up to Nathan's meadow. His hand and forearm rested across her arms that held him around his waist. She laid her cheek on the back of his shoulder, and snuggled close. Her hair blew out behind them as they rode, and some of it tickled the back of his neck. He loved the feel of her arms tight around him.
When they crossed Julia's meadow, Nathan stopped Newton and dismounted by the front. He went to work directly, picking flowers. Julia couldn't resist and dismounted, too. Though, she kept Newton's reigns in her hands and watched Nathan as he made an enormous bouquet. When he was satisfied, Nathan pulled a small piece of ribbon from his front pants pocket. It was then that Julia realized that the bouquet was not a sudden impulse. He must have planned this out, enough at least to stash a ribbon in his pocket.
When he presented her the bouquet, she just shook her head at him, defiant. "You are not going to give me flowers on your birthday." She told him, incredulous.
Nathan gazed at her in that adoring way that made her knees weak. "You deserve flowers every day of the year. So, I will give you flowers any time I think you should be given flowers. If that's okay with you, future Mrs. Grant." He teased her. "All you have to do is accept my affection, no matter what day it is."
Julia was defenseless. As much as she tried, she would never be able to say no to him a day in her life. She took the bouquet and smelled the flowers. They were lovely. "Thank you, Mr. Grant." She told him, eyeing him over the top of the bouquet.
They returned to Newton, and Nathan tied the flowers on the back for her. Then he mounted, moved his foot, and she was up again behind him. She held on even tighter this time, and he felt the difference. So, he held on tighter too, interlacing his fingers with hers, on the hand that was on top. It was those little things that got her every time. She placed her cheek just next to his neck and cuddled in close.
When they got up to his meadow, Nathan slowed Newton to a walk. The flowers here were even more beautiful. When they neared the stream, Nathan helped Julia dismount and then did the same. Then he let Newton drink in the stream, and tethered him where he could graze. He retrieved the saddlebags and brought them over closer. He pulled a blanket from inside and spread it out under the oak tree.
The day was already getting pretty hot, so Julia eyed the stream. When Nathan sat down on the blanket, Julia immediately set to work pulling off his riding boots. She removed his socks too, and rolled up his pant legs. He watched her while she worked, with an amused look.
Julia sat down next to him and pulled off her own boots. Then her stockings, and she rolled up the hem of her riding culottes. She stood in front of him and put her hands out. "Let's go, Lawman."
He chuckled but gave her his hands. She pulled him up to standing and turned him towards the stream. Though, she kept ahold of one of his forearms. When they hit the water he gasped, but still went in. It was refreshing. Plus, she wasn't letting go of him. When they got to the middle, Julia let one hand drop down to the water and pulled a little splash up on her neck. It felt so good. What she wouldn't give to go swimming.
Nathan pulled a little water up on his own neck, and realized how nice it felt. Julia looked at him and a big smile spread across her face. "Remember when you dunked me?"
Nathan chuckled hard. "I do, though it was an honest accident, Miss Matthews. That was the day before your birthday. The day that Jake arrived in Hope Valley."
Julia reminded him of something. "You held me to keep me warm."
"And we fell asleep in the sun." Nathan remembered that too, as he looked at her, amused. "When we woke up we were…" He cleared his throat. "Close, in the sunshine." It had felt so natural and normal to be laying next to her, and holding her.
Julia nodded, smiling up at him. It had felt so normal. "Do you have any birthday wishes, this year, Lawman?"
"I do." Nathan admitted. "But, the first few came true already." He reached down for more water. He was getting his shirt terribly wet, so Julia came over and rolled his collar down a little more.
"Really?" She asked him as she stayed close.
"Yes. A day spent with you, the groundbreaking, our time together on the swing, that kiss." Oh, yes. That kiss. A lot had happened already, and it was only noon. He thought of one more, and his eyes closed in contentment, as he said it. "You holding me so tight as we rode together."
Julia moved closer and gently went into his arms. She held him tight around the waist and breathed in his scent. His arms held her tight, too. She laid her cheek just next to his open collar, and closed her eyes. And, they stayed like that for a long time.
Finally, without moving, she whispered. "Any other birthday wishes?"
He laid his cheek against her hair. "Not any that matter, compared to this." He closed his eyes and relished this tender moment.
She whispered softly. "I love you, Nathan Grant." Another wish checked off his list.
He answered back raspy. "I love you, Julia."
After another minute, Julia heard his stomach rumble. She picked up her head and looked up at him. "Is that your stomach, Lawman?"
He chuckled down at her. "Yea, sorry. You might need to feed me soon, Jules."
"That I can do." She said happily, and she took his hand, and led him out of the stream. Julia pointed to the blanket and he plopped down with an amused smile. He laid back a little, turned, and lounged on an elbow, watching her. She sat cross-legged facing him, with the saddlebags on her lap. She gently laid out a picnic lunch before him. Chicken salad sandwiches, cut carrots and cucumbers, crackers and cheese squares. She had also brought chocolate cookies, leftover from her dinner date with Jake. She leaned over and laid a napkin out before him, and poured him some lemonade from her canteen. Her eyes met his and she realized that he had been watching her the entire time.
"Happy Birthday, Lawman." She told him, and motioned with her hand. "The world is your oyster." That sounded kind of funny. "Well...this little world, is your oyster." She corrected.
He chuckled. "It certainly is. And, it's all the world I need." He took some cheese and popped it in his mouth.
They ate under the oak tree, and enjoyed being together. After they were done, Julia packed up the leftovers. She moved slightly so Nathan could lay down. She laid down beside him, resting the back of her head on his shoulder and looking up at the beautiful blue sky. In a very short time, she felt the regular rise and fall of Nathan's chest, and knew he had fallen asleep. Just like a dad. Though pretty soon, the regular rhythm of his breathing had lulled her to sleep, too.
Nathan woke first, and found Julia turned toward him and cuddled up, with her leg hooked over his. Her culottes had come up a little bit, and her leg, which he now knew was as beautiful as the rest of her, was exposed all the way up to the knee. Her arm laid across his waist and her cheek rested on his chest. She looked so beautiful as her hair cascaded all across his shoulder and neck. Her wonderful scent was making his head swim.
He turned slightly and planted a tender kiss on her forehead. Julia slowly opened her eyes and tried to make them focus. As she came more into consciousness, she became more aware of her body and realized her leg was inappropriately draped over his. She quickly pulled back and sat up, embarrassed.
She asked, "What time is it?"
He fished in his saddlebag for his pocket watch. "2:43 p.m." He told her. "Do we need to go soon?"
"We probably should." Julia told him, sadly. "I'm supposed to be at your house early to cook with Allie."
Nathan nodded and they both put on their socks and shoes. Nathan stood and pulled her up to standing. Julia packed things up into the saddlebags while Nathan saddled Newton and got him all ready. In the span of a few minutes, they were ready to mount.
"Want to ride in front this time?" Nathan asked her.
Julia nodded though she had to ask. "It won't be too distracting, cowboy?"
He smiled. "Yes it will be. But, Newton knows the way down. So, all I have to do is hold on, and hold onto you." He teased her.
"Okay, Lawman." She eyed him coyly. "Promise you won't let go?"
"Promise." He told her, as he led her over to Newton. Julia put her left foot in the stirrup and was up easily. She scooted forward and removed her foot. He was up and behind her in one swift motion. She scooted back and leaned into his strong chest, and together they found their comfortable spot. He put his arms on each side of her waist and she pulled her hair to one side. Now it was his turn to snuggle in close, and that he did. And he quietly goaded, "Imagine if I'd held you like this the first time we rode together."
She giggled. "I might have fainted."
But, he told her a truth. "Oh, but I wanted to hold you close."
"Really?" She asked him. "Way back then?"
"You had me from the wildflowers, Julia." Nathan told her, close to her ear.
Julia liked that. She turned her head and kissed him softly on the cheek. He pulled in closer, and she rested her arms on his. Then he clicked and Newton was off. As they rode down the mountain, they once again found a closeness, a togetherness in the cadence of Newton.
When they neared the livery, Nathan dismounted and led Newton inside. When they got him all set in his stall, Nathan and Julia walked back towards town together, hand in hand. Nathan carried his saddlebags, and Julia her basket and wildflower bouquet, in the other hand. And just as they were passing Lee's office, much to their surprise, Archie exited.
Julia and Nathan stopped in their tracks and watched him walk down the stairs. "Dad. Is everything okay?"
Archie drawled, "Yes, son. Everything's fine."
"No problems up at the land?" Nathan asked, curious. Why else would he be coming out of Lee's office?
"Nope. Everything's going just fine up there." Archie told him. "I just had an appointment with Lee for something else."
Nathan found that curious but didn't press.
"Perhaps we can talk about it tomorrow, Nathan." Archie told him.
Nathan looked a tiny bit worried. "We can talk about it today, Dad."
"Well, it's your birthday, son." Archie told him. "So, it can wait."
Now Nathan was concerned. "Anything that's on your mind, we can talk about today." And just as he said that, Joseph exited Lee's office, making Nathan even more curious about what was going on.
Joseph came down the steps and approached them. "Happy Birthday, Nathan."
"Thank you, Joseph." Nathan replied.
Julia spoke up. "Pardon me, Gentlemen, but I need to excuse myself. Allie's expecting me soon at Nathan's, and I need to stop by my apartment on the way." She told them. Nathan looked slightly disappointed. "I'll see all of you later?"
"Yes. See you at home, Julia." Archie replied.
"Bye, Jules." Nathan told her. And, Joseph nodded his farewell.
Julia left the three men talking in the street, and hurried to her apartment.
When Julia got to Nathan's, she knocked lightly on the door. Allie hurried her inside, and excitedly hid the very large wrapped package that Julia was carrying under one arm. Julia carried her basket, which had been slung over her other arm, over to the dining room table and started unpacking it. Allie and Julia worked together, an efficient team, and soon had the dinner going, the decorations up, and everything else in place. Julia had even brought the wildflower bouquet so Allie could use it as a centerpiece.
Nathan came back a short time later, with Archie. Their mood seemed happy and Julia was relieved. On the walk to Nathan's, she had actually said a little prayer that Archie's news wasn't bad, especially if it was to be delivered on Nathan's birthday. But, whatever the news, it didn't seem bad at all, if their countenances were any indication.
Nathan went upstairs to change and freshen up. Julia went to check the dinner in the oven. And, wonderful smells began to fill the house. Allie put the finishing touches on the dinner table, which looked very nice. She had even made little place cards.
It was soon time for guests to arrive, so Julia and Allie took one more look around. And, just in the nick of time, as the first knock sounded at the door. Allie excitedly went to answer, and the Canfields were the first guests to arrive.
Nathan came down the stairs, delighted to see his friends. He greeted Joseph and Minnie. Angela and Cooper sat in the living room, to hang out with Allie. The Coulters came in next, followed by Mike and Jake. Next to arrive was Bill, and soon after, Faith and Fiona. The guests mingled and chatted for a little while, everyone was in a wonderful mood.
Julia and Allie arranged the buffet. Finally, when they were ready to officially start the party, Joseph prayed a prayer of blessing for the food. Then the guests went through the buffet line and took their seats at the table. Though, the three teenagers sat in the living room around the coffee table.
Everyone enjoyed the dinner and the conversation. It was a really nice time. Julia couldn't help but notice the energy between Fiona and Jake, which seemed to be charged, though not necessarily in a bad way. Mike didn't take the seat next to Fiona, which was a first. And Jake kept his distance and sat with Bill.
When everyone had eaten plenty, and passed through the buffet line a second time or even a third, Julia and Allie collected the empty plates. They carried all the dirty dishes into the kitchen and set them by the wash basin. Then, they let everyone visit a while longer.
A short time later, Allie and Julia lit candles and Allie carried in the cake. Everyone sang Happy Birthday. As Nathan blew out the candles, he looked around the room at his friends. His heart was full.
Allie and Julia cut and served the chocolate cake, and Minnie and Faith passed out slices to everyone. Archie made coffee and tea. As Julia came to sit back down next to Nathan, he squeezed her hand. He was thankful.
When everyone was done with their tea and coffee, Allie brought wrapped packages over to Nathan. He looked surprised, and a bit embarrassed. But, everyone insisted, so Nathan opened gifts. The Canfields gave him a nice devotion book, Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon. Faith, Fiona, and Mike gave him a fancy pen. The Coulters gave him some nice cuff links, presumedly for the wedding. And, Bill and Jake gave him a nice fishing reel, one he had mentioned in passing.
Next, Archie and Allie carried in a phonograph machine from the back porch. Nathan stood, shocked. This must have been the big surprise that Archie had ordered. Rosemary was tickled pink, and thought it such a nice gift. And, perfect for the new house.
Nathan came over closer and chided his father "Dad. It's too much."
Archie drawled happily. "Nonsense, son. I've missed too many birthdays. And, it's part wedding gift, too," He smiled at Nathan. "Now you can start your Sunday evening dancing tradition."
Nathan hugged him and told him thank you.
While Nathan's back was turned with the phonograph, Allie and Julia quietly carried in one more gift. He turned around to find a sizable wrapped package behind him. Nathan looked at Julia, and by her timid face, knew this gift was from her. He turned his chair towards the package, and sat so that he could work on his lap. He cut the string with his pocket knife, and slowly unwrapped. Everyone crowded around to get a better look. When he got inside the wrapping, he was looking at the back of a huge canvas. It was indeed a painting, just as he'd hoped. Nathan glanced up at Julia who now had her arms crossed nervously across her chest and was biting her thumbnail.
He saw a small inscription on the back of the canvas. In her beautiful handwriting, was written The Dawn.
Nathan looked up at Julia. "The Dawn." He said aloud. "Is that the title of the painting?"
Julia nodded timidly and watched him as he slowly turned it around. A huge aaah and a few wows came from the crowd of spectators.
On the canvas was painted the sunrise that Julia and Nathan had seen together. When they had stopped at the overlook, on their way down the mountain after Joseph was injured. They had ridden together on Newton, just as they had today. And that day, had been only her third day in Hope Valley.
Up at that overlook, they had stood next to each other and watched God make a masterpiece in the sky. And they had both had the exact same impression - that the masterpiece was just for them.
And that moment had been the beginning of their love story. The Beginning. The Dawn.
In the painting, the colors were brilliant and beautiful, just as they had been that day. Julia had done exceptionally well recreating each and every hue. The rolling hills in soft gray were exactly right, and the few clouds perfectly placed. Julia was an excellent painter.
Rosemary asked, "Julia, you painted that?"
Julia nodded timidly.
Lee asked a question next. "What is the significance of the painting?"
Nathan looked at Julia, so deeply touched he wasn't sure he could answer. Now it was he who was speechless. So, she answered. "Remember when Joseph was hurt up at the cabin, and Nathan and I had to tend to him? Well, after Joseph had been taken care of, Nathan and I had to ride down the mountain on Newton together. And on our way down, the sun was coming up, and the sky was so beautiful. We stopped at an overlook, and this was the view." Julia told them.
There was more to the story. "Of course, we had just had an intense experience together, and some wonderful conversation up at that cabin." Julia looked at Joseph and confessed. "Joseph, you were a horrible chaperone. You passed out and let us sit up and talk to each other, and get to know one another."
Joseph chuckled at her cute little joke, as did most of the group. Julia looked at Nathan, who held out his hand to her. She took it, as she said the rest. "When we stood at that overlook, and watched the colors in the sky, that was the beginning for me. The Dawn. I started falling in love right then and there." She confessed. Julia looked around the room and then back at Nathan. Her voice went down to a whisper. "Though I didn't know it then, everything I ever wanted was standing right beside me."
Rosemary loved a good love story. "So that's why you titled it, The Dawn."
Julia nodded. Nathan kissed her on the hand and wouldn't let go. She stood next to him, and looked at the painting by his side. He couldn't take his eyes off of it.
"It's for the big house." She told him low, so only he could hear. He was still seated and holding the painting, so he looked up at her and nodded, still silent. He knew just where he wanted to put it.
Lee told her. "Julia, it is really excellent. You are a mighty fine painter."
Bill chimed in. "I have to agree. It's exceptional, Julia."
"Thank you." Julia told them. "It's always scary to let someone see your work."
Nathan gazed up at her and realized how vulnerable that must be, could read the reservation on her face.
Faith piped in. "Well you don't have any reason to be scared, Julia. It's wonderful. You are a very talented painter."
Fiona told her. "Don't ever be timid about it, Jules."
Nathan gazed at the painting again for a long moment, and then Archie helped him set it up on a chair, so others could continue to admire it.
Everyone mingled and talked a while longer, and when it got late, Nathan's friends began to go home, little by little. Rosemary and Lee came over and said good night before departing.
Then, the Canfields were next. Before they left, Nathan managed to talk to Joseph privately, who told him that Lucas was still in town. In fact, he had stayed an extra week just to meet with Joseph and was doing…better. Though, he was planning to leave for Cape Fullerton sometime over the weekend.
Next, Faith and Fiona headed home, and Jake and Mike walked them. Bill left shortly after.
Allie, Archie, Nathan and Julia set to work in the kitchen to clean up. When the dishes were all washed, and everything was wiped down and put away, Nathan offered to walk Julia home.
He took one more glance at the incredible painting. Then Nathan took her hand and hooked it over his elbow, as they walked out the door.
"It was a nice party, wasn't it?" He asked, as they walked out into the moonlit night.
Julia looked at him, happy that he was happy. "It was."
He looked at her, obviously in thought about something. "Jules, Sunday Night Dancing is on."
"I'm so excited." Julia told him. She knew Allie would like it, too. "Did everything go okay with your father?"
"Yes. Very well." He looked at her to tell her the news. "He's moving to Hope Valley."
"Really?" Julia was surprised. She knew the relationship had progressed, but that was a new level.
"He's had an incredible offer to open a business with Joseph Canfield. Woodworking, Carpentry, and Furniture making. Lee has recognized the need for a few years now, but Hope Valley didn't have anyone talented enough or dependable enough to go in with Joseph." Nathan told her. "But when Dad and Joseph had the opportunity to work together, on our swing, they clicked. They are both very talented, and work well together." He explained. "And, Lee will act as investor in the business, to help them get it off the ground. He's really behind them."
"Wow, that's incredible." Julia told him. There was just one thing, though. "Are you okay with that, Nathan? Having Archie around full-time?"
Nathan had thought about it all afternoon. It was a big step, but perhaps a good one. "He will work with Joseph, and I can't think of anyone better to hold him accountable. He won't be able to slip an inch in any of the resolutions or commitments he's made." Nathan told her. "And, I can't think of anyone better to speak into his life. Joseph will be a wonderful influence and mentor."
Julia wondered about something. "So, will he stay indefinitely or does he need to return to Union City?" Archie had mentioned possibly returning after Nathan's birthday.
"He needs to return, to wrap up things there." Nathan told her. "But, when he comes for the wedding, he will stay for good."
"Does he know where he will live yet?" Julia asked.
"He's working on that. In talks with Lee, apparently there might be some housing out near the mill for the first few months." Nathan told her. "And once we move up to the big house, he wants to take my row house."
That would be really nice for Archie, so close to town and the Canfields.
"Wow, I have to say it sounds like the perfect set up for Archie." Julia stopped though, and turned to look at Nathan. He had given her his typical "logical" answer, of how it would be good for Archie. But, what about Nathan? How did he really feel about it? She looked at him more intently this time. "And you are truly okay with this?"
Nathan had to admit, it was a big risk. And, for Allie also. If Archie didn't toe the line, it would be devastating for everyone involved. But, it was a risk Nathan was willing to take. He might not have felt the same two or even three months ago. But Nathan and his father had come a long way, these last weeks had been healing for the both of them.
Nathan looked down at Julia, touched that she was so concerned. "I truly am." He told her. "I need to take this risk."
Julia nodded, that was all she needed to hear. They picked back up their slow cadence that took them nowhere in a hurry, just like always seemed to happen at the end of an evening.
When they arrived at Julia's back door, Nathan turned to her.
She smiled at him, timidly. "That was some birthday."
He chuckled. "You're telling me." He paused and looked serious. "I cannot remember one thing about my birthday last year, other than the fact that Allie was there." That made her heart stop for sadness. "But, this year it was so…full." And she would make sure his birthday always was, every single year, from here on out.
He fixed his gaze on her. "Jules, I am so happy you are painting again."
Julia tilted her head and told him straight. "You have to know, Nathan, it was only for you. It's you and you alone that inspired me to paint again." He felt his pulse quicken at her words.
"I have wanted to see your work for so long." Nathan told her. Now, she was telling him that he was the inspiration?
"What did you think?" She asked him.
"I love it." Nathan couldn't understand how she could even ask such a question. Her work was amazing, and even more special was the meaning behind it. "You are very brave, Jules, to let others see your work." He had taken notice of how timid she was, and vulnerable, at having her work viewed by others.
"It wasn't everyone else I was worried about, Nathan. I hope you know. It was only you." Julia told him. "I was worried about what you would think."
Nathan placed his hand gently on her cheek. "I'm your biggest fan, remember? And I always will be." He told her the absolute truth, one he felt to the core of his being. "I love you...no matter what."
Julia nodded slowly, so thankful for his words, heavy with truth. She felt the same way.
"And your work is amazing, Jules. You put your heart into it and it shows. How could I not love it?" He put his other hand on her other cheek. "Do you not realize how deeply I care for you?"
Julia searched his face and saw that he meant it. And even though she knew all of this already, it was wonderful to hear it again, especially after she had felt so vulnerable.
"And, I already know exactly where I'm going to hang it." Nathan told her.
"Really? Where?" Julia asked him, curious.
Nathan could picture it already. "Above the mantel in the big room. As the centerpiece of the entire house." He told her, simply.
He gazed at her intensely, his hands still holding her face."You were right about one thing, Jules. That sunrise was the dawn, the beginning." He paused. "For you, it might have been the moment that you started to fall in love with me." Nathan held her gaze, determined to tell her something that he was now dying for her to know. "But, for me…it was the moment…that I began to live again."
