Chapter 123. Celebrate!
When Jake pulled the "wedding car" up in front of Gustave's, he and Fiona just looked at each other. Jake thought maybe Nathan and his sister would like a moment, and Fiona obviously agreed, telling him so by that slight little nod of her head.
So Jake spoke up. "We'll just give you two a minute. All the guests have not yet arrived, so…"
Fiona finished, "Take your time." Then, Jake and Fiona both climbed out of the car. Jake extended his hand, which Fiona took, and they walked into Gustave's together.
In the back seat, Nathan gazed at his bride. Then he glanced down at her hand tightly holding onto his, their fingers so carefully interwoven. He let his other hand come up and touch her soft cheek, and he kissed her again. Tender and sweet, though both could feel the passion, right there on edge, waiting to wash over them. Nathan slowly pulled back and smiled at her. "I can't stop kissing you, wife."
Julia giggled low. "I'm not complaining, husband." She teased, and she brought her lips to his again. They kissed long, relishing the newfound freedom and depth of connection, as husband and wife. There was so much more to discover, and they both couldn't wait.
But this evening, there was still a celebration to be had. And they wanted to live it to the fullest, every moment of their special day. The kiss was just winding down, when a tap on the car suddenly startled them.
The tap was followed by Pendergrass' voice, teasing them, as he walked by, "Okay, you two!"
Julia burst out laughing and brought her hand up to her mouth.
Nathan just shook his head and laughed from his belly. "Leave it to Penny." By the time he could do any more than that, Penny was already safely inside Gustave's Restaurant.
When their laughter finally tapered off, Julia looked at Nathan and surmised. "Maybe we should go in."
He looked her over. The flush of her cheeks, her heart-shaped lips so plump and inviting, her eyes so filled with love. He leaned down close and whispered against her lips, "Maybe one more…" and he kissed her again. As his lips moved over hers, her hands came up to his jaw, went around the back of his neck, and played with the curls at the edge of his hairline. Her touch made every hair stand on end, and it was all he could do to pull back just enough to disconnect their lips. "Maybe we should just go in." He rasped, repeating her words almost exactly. Her eyes danced as she looked at him, which made it even harder to consider being anywhere else but right here.
Julia smiled lopsided and said it one more time, trying to convince herself, too. "Yes, maybe we should." Why was it so hard?
One more tender peck on the lips, and Nathan opened the door. He took her hand and helped her out. Then Nathan hooked her hand over his arm, and led her in to their wedding reception.
When Jake and Fiona entered, Ben and Faith met them at the door. Penny came in just behind them, and everyone greeted each other. Then, the group moved towards the tables, to find a seat together.
Sarah, the pretty blond waitress, walked past and was a little too obvious with her perusal of Jake, looking handsome in his three-piece suit. Fiona, who was now standing on the other side of Faith, couldn't help but notice, though she didn't say a word.
Lily, the other waitress, came by and took their drink orders. But when Sarah delivered them, she made a point to lean over close to Jake and flirt, as she set down his beer. "Thanks." He mumbled, unsure what to do. But Fiona knew just what to do, and she did it completely without thinking. By reflex, she brought her hand up and placed it on Jake's arm, making it obvious that they were together. Sarah understood the gesture, but Jake had been so surprised by it, he raised his eyebrows and gazed at Fiona amusedly, almost teasing. She held his gaze for a moment or two, before it fully registered what she'd done. But it was too late, there was no denying that contented smile on Jake's face.
A few minutes later, Nathan and Julia entered Gustave's Restaurant. Ben whistled loud to get everyone's attention. Then Penny stood and bellowed "Attention, everyone! Introducing: Inspector and Mrs. Grant!"
Everyone stood and applauded the newlywed couple, as they walked into the room. Nathan smiled shyly and put up his hand in a little wave of thanks, as the applause continued. Julia just smiled up at him, before she glanced around the room at all of their family and friends.
Sarah led them over to their table, at the front of the room, though they didn't sit right away. Fiona and Clara stole them away to take some pictures over to the side, as husband and wife. Fiona also called Allie over, for one or two shots. Once that was done, Nathan and Julia began making their way around the room, greeting their guests. Fiona and Clara moved around the room too, though in the opposite direction, taking photos of the wedding guests.
Nathan and Julia passed by the table where Allie sat with Robert, Paul, Cooper, and Angela, though their table had been pulled up close to the Brookfield kids. Allie looked so pretty in the middle of all the young people, in her periwinkle blue. She just had a glow of happiness about her.
Next, Nathan and Julia approached a table where the Yost's sat with Henry. The three stood and made their congratulations, Florence of course, hugged both bride and groom animatedly.
The newlyweds made it around to three or four tables of guests, before Gustave came out and invited everyone through the buffet line. Of course, he made sure that the bride and groom went first. And once Nathan and Julia were seated at their table, plates full, he finally let the rest go through the line.
Nathan and Julia sat and ate together. As the rest of the guests moved through the line, they just chatted between the two of them about the ceremony, the flowers, and the beautiful site. A relaxed moment in the middle of a busy, emotion-filled day.
When Nathan and Julia were finished eating, different people approached their table and offered their congratulations. And then, the bride and groom rose and moved around the room again. They came to Jake's table which he shared with Fiona, Ben, Penny, and Faith. They chatted for a while, and when Nathan and Julia moved on, Jake excused himself, too, to go talk to Bill.
However, he went towards the back to take care of something else first. Jake tracked down Sarah, the waitress, and spoke to her very gently, on the side.
And when he was done, he turned to find Fiona just behind him, holding the camera. She looked slightly upset but walked away very quickly and returned to taking pictures. Jake just watched her, amused, as she tried to act normal, and hide the fact that she was most definitely bothered.
Unfortunately, however, Jake would have to explain later. He had a meeting set with Bill and Gabe, to discuss the speeches one last time.
A short time later, Fiona was back at their table and sitting alone with Faith. Ben and Penny were still at the bar, talking with Gabe, Bill, and Jake. Sarah and Lily came by to drop off some drinks the men had ordered. And while Sarah was there, she looked at Fiona, and told her shyly. "Fiona, I would like to apologize. I didn't know that you and Jake were courting. Otherwise, earlier, I never would've…"
Fiona's mouth fell open just slightly but she recovered quickly. Lily was still in earshot, too, but Fiona figured it was best to just answer. "It's okay, Sarah." Fiona smiled, now feeling terribly timid. "You didn't know."
"He set me straight just now." Sarah told her with a friendly smile. "Though, that was about the nicest I've ever been let down." She giggled low, trying to make amends.
Lily piped in, adding her snarky two cents, between women. "Sarah, honestly. I don't know how you didn't know. Where have you been? Jake has had eyes for Fiona for a long time."
Fiona glanced over at the slightly older, married girl. And then at Faith, who was all smiles, slightly enjoying Fiona's obvious discomfort. "I'm not so sure about that." Fiona answered light, eager for this conversation to end.
But Lily just nodded, quite sure of herself. "Are you kidding? Fiona. He's been in love with you, since about a week after he moved here." She said with a chuckle.
Once again, Fiona's mouth fell open just slightly, though she managed to recover enough to deliver a shaky, "We've only been courting as of very recently."
Sarah could read Fiona's discomfort with this conversation. "Well then, congratulations are in order. You're a lucky girl."
Fiona smiled a mixture of timidity and embarrassment. "Thank you."
Sarah smiled timid. "Friends then?"
Fiona nodded. "Of course. Friends." And Sarah seemed appeased as she and Lily walked on to the next table.
Fiona smiled shyly at Faith, as she heard Sarah's words a second time, in her head. A lucky girl. Yes. Yes, she was. And she felt horrible about the assumptions she had made earlier, about Jake. Even if he had seemed amused, she had been annoyed and, dare she say it: jealous, when she spotted him talking to Sarah. And he had only been setting the record straight.
Fiona scanned the room and spotted Jake across the room, still talking to the men. He looked so handsome in that navy blue suit. And when she took into consideration the kind and gentle heart that was beneath it, her heart only grew fonder. How could she have gotten it so wrong?
Bill, Gabe, and Jake walked to the front of the room and Penny whistled again, to get everyone's attention. Sarah and Lily passed out glasses of something bubbly. And when the men had everyone's attention, Gabe spoke first.
"I hope you don't mind if we…" he swept his hand to the men behind him. "interrupt your evening, to regale you with a few stories about Nathan Grant." He paused and searched out his friend. "I'm sure he won't mind, at all." Gabe kept a completely straight face as he spoke, and his dry sense of humor earned a collective chuckle from the crowd. Penny and Ben whistled their approval.
Nathan just shook his head, from where he sat with Julia, Charlie, and Rebecca.
"Nathan and I met a long time ago, way back at the academy." Gabe paused and looked around the room. "Back then, while some guys were chasing the Commander's daughters, the Commander's daughters were chasing Nathan Grant." The crowd laughed lightly. "Though, he didn't even realize it." Louder laughter erupted. Julia laughed too, and looked at Nathan. He just shook his head no, and Julia laughed even harder.
"But, Nathan and I became good friends. Maybe it's because he's the second best tracker in all of Alberta, and I'm the first." Gabe said with a shrug. More laughter erupted. Anyone that was well acquainted with Gabe and Nathan, understood this long-running joke. "Could've been because we had similar goals in life, and priorities." Gabe shrugged again, nonchalant. Then a moment of serious. "But Nathan was a faithful friend, every time I was in need of a friend." He grimaced at the thought of the bullet wound, that he swore still gave him pains, when the weather went a certain way. "Nathan is my brother in arms." He paused. "So, I probably shouldn't say any of this. But I feel I must." Again that straight face that was telling of Gabe's dry sense of humor. He looked at the bride. "Someone really should warn you, Julia. You have your work cut out for you." Another eruption of laughter came from the crowd, everyone seemed to be enjoying this amusing speech.
From his coat pocket, Gabe pulled out a list. He was very animated as he painfully unfolded it, all part of his act. "Are you ready, Mrs. Grant?" He asked her. Julia glanced at Nathan, giggled, and then nodded yes, to Gabe.
And so, he cleared his throat loudly, and read, starting with the title. "The Nathan Grant User Manual." Gabe's straight face was the funniest part. The crowd loved it. He continued. "Warning #1: Nathan Grant has the tendency to be…grumpy…in the morning." The crowd chuckled. He put up his finger. When everyone was quiet again, he kept going. "But, lucky for you, Julia, I'll tell you the cure. All it takes, to fix him right up, is: a hot cup of coffee." Julia laughed and nodded, acknowledging that she understood, so Gabe kept going. "#2: He is also grumpy when he's hungry. Which is quite often. You might need quite a budget for this." More laughter from the crowd. "But a few cookies, a piece of pie, or two scoops of ice cream is all it takes, to fix him up." Gabe paused and looked at his friend, who was shaking his head and chuckling quite hard, with the crowd, at Gabe's clever roast. "#3: If he's not taken out-of-doors every few days, he also gets quite cranky." More laughter erupted. "A horse ride is a particularly helpful cure, on particularly long work days." Julia glanced at Nathan and shared a good laugh with him, before nodding to Gabe again, signaling that she was taking note, and ready for the next one. "#4: When he snores, I've found a solid elbow to the ribs, even through a thick Mountie blanket, makes him roll right over." The crowd burst into laughter again, everyone fully enjoying Gabe's hilarious roast of the groom.
Finally though, when the laughter died down, Gabe folded the list and put it away. And he looked at his friend. "Now, if I were to be serious, though I won't be..." He said it so dryly, the crowd was eating it up. "The one sincere thing I would say, is this: I have never seen Nathan happier. And Julia, you and Allie are the reason. Ever since he adopted Allie and met you, he's no longer grumpy." One more light round of laughter. "But, he's just…happy." Gabe smiled honest. "Thank you for loving him so well." Julia nodded at Gabe, then she looked at Nathan and smiled. She squeezed the hand that he was tightly holding.
Bill took over. "I should've gone first. Gonna be hard to follow that." He pursed his lips together, as he addressed the crowd. "I would like to raise a glass and make a toast to the happy couple." He raised his glass and spoke to Nathan and Julia. "May you always remember the love you felt today, and may today's measure be the starting point. And from here, may you always grow in love for one another, in understanding, in respect, and eventually…" Bill's face turned the slightest bit mischievous. "…may your family grow in number." A light, happy chuckle trickled from the crowd. Bill smiled at both bride and groom, and raised his glass. Everyone followed suit. "To the bride and groom."
Ben and Penny, and well, all the other Mounties present, let out a collective, "Here, here!" Then everyone clanked their glasses and drank to the happy couple.
Jake was next. He waited until the noise died down. Penny helped to calm the jovial crowd, with another little whistle. Jake glanced at his sister, holding onto Nathan's arm now. They were a formidable match - inside and out. He addressed the crowd. "It's not often that you meet two people so well-matched. I saw it the first time I visited. Quite simply, it was the way my sister looked at Nathan. Deep down, she knew. And so, I knew:..." He paused and looked at Fiona, as he said the next words. "She had met her match." And he held Fiona's gaze. "And well, that just doesn't happen everyday." He paused and brought his gaze back to Nathan and Julia. "My parents had that something special. And Nathan and Julia have it." He smiled. "Nathan, Julia, I wish you a lifetime of discovering each other, and challenging each other, and loving each other. You belong together." He paused and raised his glass. "To Nathan and Julia." And everyone raised their glasses, clanked and took a drink.
After Jake, Archie stood and walked to the front. He drawled in his usual way. "I hope you all don't mind if I add onto that." It was unexpected, but Nathan smiled shyly, and nodded at his father. "Nathan, I don't know if you remember, but your Grandpa Sullivan and Grandma Rose had a big garden. Do you remember?" Nathan nodded yes, so everyone could see. "You and Colleen used to love to play there. Lots of beautiful flowers and shrubs, plants, all of 'em your Grandpa planted, for your grandmother. All because she…liked flowers." Rebecca smiled happy at the mention of her parents. In fact, hearing the way Archie spoke of them, brought tears to her eyes. "Well, that garden all started with one rose bush." He put up one finger for emphasis. "Sully planted it the year they were married. Right smack dab in the middle of that garden. I tell 'ya, it was in the middle, because he marked it out and measured, Rose took great pains to explain that to me once." Archie chuckled at the memory of his mother-in-law. "And, whenever they would have a disagreement, as newlywed couples often do, they would "meet in the middle". They would meet at that rosebush and talk it out. It became their thing, to "meet in the middle". And it all started because of that one rose bush." He smiled at Julia and Nathan. "Every year, Sully would add on to that garden. He would plant more and more plants, shrubs, flowers, all around that rose bush. Do you remember how it was when they died?" Nathan nodded yes again. "It was something else - magnificent. Plants everywhere. You and Colleen used to play hide and seek there for hours. You both loved to get lost in there." He sniffled at the memory. "But. Over all the years that followed, those other plants were only added, only had the opportunity to be planted, because Sully and Rose learned how to meet in the middle." He smiled and drawled slow. "So that's my wish for you, Son, and for your bride: Meet in the middle. You can't go wrong if you learn that one lesson." Archie raised his glass and smiled at his son and daughter-in-law. "To Nathan and Julia." And everyone repeated, clanked their glasses, and drank.
Though, Nathan got up, moved to the front, and hugged his father. Julia was right on his heels, and hugged her father-in-law, too. They moved down the line of all the men who had made toasts, and thanked them for their words, and their blessings.
Next, Gustave came to the front and drawled in his french accent. "At this time, I would like to invite Nathan and Julia to come and cut the cake." Alex wheeled out the wedding cake, a beautiful but simple white cake with multiple layers, decorated of course, with real flowers. The bride and groom took their place just in front of it and Fiona took a picture. Then together, they made the first slice. Next, Minnie and Clara, who had made the cake, did the rest of the cutting. Allie and some of the kids passed out plates of freshly sliced cake to all the guests.
After the cake, it was time for dancing. Alex started the player-piano, and invited Nathan and Julia out onto the dance floor. The tables had all been arranged on one side of the room, leaving plenty of space for dancing on the other.
Nathan and Julia took their place out in the middle of the dance floor. Her dress' train had been bustled and Nathan had shed his jacket and tie.
As he counted off, Nathan held his bride and gazed at her. Then he took off, leading her around the dance floor. Those who hadn't seen him dance before, were pleasantly surprised. But neither Nathan nor Julia noticed the crowd watching them, once they were caught up in each other.
A few other couples joined in: Charlie and Rebecca, the Flynns, Chuck and Grace, the Yost's, and the Coulters. Rosemary's pregnancy was obvious now, and Lee was so adorable with her - she wanted to dance, but he was more concerned with taking care of her.
When the first song ended, the next one started immediately, but this time, was slower.
Fiona shot a few photos of the dancing, but then, laid down the camera. She tracked down Jake, who was chatting with Gabe by the bar. He had shed his tie and jacket, and had loosened his top button. She tapped him lightly on the shoulder. "Jacob, could I have this dance?"
Without another word to Gabe, Jake turned and took her hand, obviously content. "Yes, ma'am." He drawled out slow.
When they got onto the dance floor, Jake pulled her in close. Very close. And kept her close. Fiona wondered if it was appropriate in front of all these people, but once she looked up at him, it sure was hard to listen to reason. After the song was more than half way, Fiona finally managed to say something. "Jake, that was a very nice speech."
What she really to do was ask him why he'd looked at her when he'd said the words "she had met her match", but she was pretty sure she already knew why.
"Thank you." Jake drawled out slow. "I'm glad you liked it."
But that was still not the conversation she wanted to have at the moment. Fiona had something else to say first. "Jake, I want to apologize. I'm sorry for my reaction earlier."
Jake answered so easily. "It's okay, Fi."
"No, it's not." She told him, as they swayed together. "I think I was…jealous. Momentarily."
"It's okay." He told her, obviously enjoying this, and making absolutely no effort to hide it. He added an admission. "I think…I like it when you're jealous."
Fiona challenged. "What do you mean you like it?"
"First, you are terribly attractive when you're jealous." He was so close and his gaze so intense. "And second, it lets me know where I stand with you." He said that last part with the most charming of smiles and a flirtatious tone.
She took a deep breath and searched his face. "Where you stand with me?" She questioned. "So if I'm jealous you take it to mean…what exactly?"
"That you feel something." Jake let it hang there.
Fiona felt her temperature rise and she scoffed under her breath. "Feel something? Feel something?" She repeated, obviously flustered now. She looked him straight in the eye, not sure if she was upset by his words or endeared by his charming way of delivering them. "Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds?"
Jake told her softly. "No, I guess I don't."
"Jacob Matthews…" She let his name trail off but then, she told him straight. "I...I am in love with you." She confessed it, just put it out there. His mouth fell open just slightly. And so, her eyes were drawn there. Right to his perfect mouth. She wished she could kiss him; oh, how she wished. To be anywhere but in a crowd of people, and be kissed by those lips.
Jake smiled wistful and gazed at her. The words that he had been waiting for, hoping for, longing for. He tucked them inside his heart. And then he answered her softly. "I love you, too." He suddenly felt light as a feather, so he shifted his weight as they danced. "The truth is, I have been in love with you for a while now."
His eyes went to her lips. Those beautiful lips that had made such a beautiful confession. He longed to make that connection, to kiss those lips tenderly, but he realized he shouldn't, at least not here, not now, not in front of all these people. But the feelings and the energy between them was intense, and so, he just pulled her in closer. Their eyes communicated everything, as they swayed to the music - his, fixed on her, and her's, gazing into his valleys of green.
Ben swayed to the music with Faith in his arms. His heart swelled as he gazed at her. After such a sweet display of love and commitment, between Nathan and Julia, he couldn't help but be filled with hope, for a future with the woman in his arms. Every time he looked at Faith, he just felt it. There was something special between them, unlike any of the other times he'd been interested in a girl. With Faith, there was a depth and a connection that just came natural. And it was undeniable. He could only hope that she felt it, too.
He'd been waiting all day to tell her this, "Faith, I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you look so…beautiful." She was breathtaking in blue. It gave a depth to her eyes that he could happily get lost in.
She smiled shy. "Thank you." Then she added. "It was a very nice ceremony, wasn't it?" She had never seen a wedding so filled with emotion. Beautiful and touching from start to finish. Perhaps that was just how it was between two people like Nathan and Julia, who had both opened themselves so completely to one another.
Ben agreed. "Yes, yes it was." He told her. He gazed at her for a long moment before he added. "Though, I have to confess..." She almost knew what was coming. "My mind kept…wandering."
Faith giggled soft. "Oh really? Wandering where?" She asked playful.
"You know where." He told her in a way that left no room for doubt. He exhaled and let his eyes go to her lips, obviously remembering. "That…kiss." He told her softly. Then he brought his eyes back up to meet her's.
Faith smiled. Her mind had gone there, too, a few times during the ceremony. Especially considering how handsome Ben looked in his dark blue suit. His eyes were so clear and bright and his dark features so attractive, in contrast to the crisp white shirt. She felt butterflies every time single time he looked at her, and he had glanced at her so many times during the ceremony. It had made for a lot of butterflies.
"Maybe…before you leave town, you'll get another." She replied just above a whisper. That put a sparkle in his eye, one that she couldn't help but notice.
"That's a dangerous statement to make, Blue Eyes." He told her, playful now.
She laughed low. "Why is that?"
"Because I will hold you to it." He told her cutely. "Count on it."
As another slow song came on, Nathan admired his wife. He looked her over, and felt his heart rate pick up. He enjoyed dancing with her, and so, he held her close. Her familiar smell felt like home, though it had for a long time now. Even so, he breathed it in, and relished this moment.
Then, curious about something, he finally reached and touched one of her pretty dangly earrings. "Are these new?"
Julia smiled, impressed that he'd noticed. "No, they are old. Very old. They were my grandmother's." She explained. "The necklace, too. Elle gave them to me for my "something old."
Next, Nathan let his hand go to her arm, and he encircled it gently, and moved the bracelet up higher. He inspected it, recognized it, and brought his eyes back to her's. She explained. "Your mother lent it to me, for my "something borrowed."
He held onto her arm so gently, and eyed the bracelet. Then he eyed her, and placed a tender kiss on the inside of her wrist. Her breath caught as he did. He liked her reaction, and shifted his weight. "Colleen would've…" though he didn't finish. Somehow, she knew what he was going to say.
Julia smiled. "That's exactly what your mother said."
Nathan nodded at that obvious truth. His sister would have loved Julia. And would have treated her like a sister, and shared anything with her. In fact, Colleen probably would've given Julia up to half of her possessions, in friendship, and then, in sisterly love.
"It looks beautiful on you. Right at home. And the pearls, too." He told her. "They fit you."
Julia chuckled low. "Fit me?" She wondered.
"Yes." He told her. "They are…classy. Not gaudy or flashy or extravagant. But elegant. Delicate. Graceful. Exquisite." He smiled down at her. "That's you."
Julia smiled up at him. "And what about you?" She turned the tables on him, and fingered the cuff links that were now visible, since he'd shed his jacket. They were valuable, gold, though simple, yet beautiful. "These fit you, too, you know." She smiled. "A treasure. Made to shine, but understated and simple. Not ostentatious or showy. But dignified, stately. Stylish and tasteful. Refined."
He smiled at her, liked her description, and her opinion, of him. He had been called boring too many times, just because he wasn't flashy in word or deed. Nor was he flashy in his dress, even if he did wear scarlet red most of the time. "I like that." He rasped softly.
They swayed to the music, just appreciating each other, and enjoying the moment. In life, there were far too few moments like these, and time always seemed to slip away so fast. So he held her close, and relished every second. When that song was over, they danced to another.
Then finally, Nathan sought out a dance with his mother. He'd promised her and wanted to make good on that promise. So, Nathan and Rebecca danced together. And they drew a lot of attention. First of all, because Rebecca was an excellent dancer. But since she'd been the one to teach Nathan, they had a natural rapport with each other. They were an impressive pair out there. Secondly, they drew attention because they were sweet together. Nathan twirled his mother with precision and style, but also with a tenderness. And he showcased her, and made her stand out.
At the same time, Archie stole Julia away to the dance floor. They chatted for a long time as they danced together. They were a little less impressive, but still sweet. Clara and Fiona noticed the family dancing going on, and brought the camera to capture some photos.
When the song was over, Allie cut-in on Rebecca to dance with her Dad. Another adorable pair. Nathan twirled her around and around, and Allie had a blast.
Meanwhile, Jake cut in on Archie to dance with his sister. Jake was also a skilled dancer, having learned from his father during Sunday night dancing. And he and Julia were also entertaining to watch.
When that song was done, Nathan decided to take a break, so Allie cut-in to dance with Julia. Julia thought it would be cute for mother and daughter to dance together, so she took the man's part. Though the song changed, which was better, and allowed them to talk a bit more. They'd chatted for less than a minute before Allie confided her concern that Robert hadn't asked her to dance yet.
Julia encouraged her. "Allie, perhaps Robert is shy about his dancing skills. Give him time. Maybe he's waiting on a slow one. Not every boy knows how to dance, you know."
"Slower ones are easier." Allie admitted, appreciating Julia's way of looking at the situation.
"Way easier." Julia reminded her. "Look at us, we are just swaying. As opposed to the waltz or foxtrot that require a bit more technique."
Allie took a deep breath and relaxed.
Julia continued. "Allie, remember: you are only thirteen. You and Robert have been friends for a long time." She smiled confident. "It could be that Robert is just being careful with you, and your heart. A boy that respects you and looks out for you now, the way Robert seems to be doing, will be a man that's worth your time later."
Allie nodded, and considered Julia's advice.
"And don't be in a hurry. You have all the time in the world." She smiled at her daughter. "If Robert is the one for you, he will still be there when you are…seventeen, or eighteen." She encouraged. "My advice: Just remain friends for now. You'll know when the time is right, and so will we, as your parents."
Allie smiled up at her. "I know you are right, but it's hard to be patient."
"Allie, there's something else to consider." She paused, hoping Allie was ready for this one. "When you care about someone, even as a friend, you want what's best for them. That often means giving them room to pursue their dreams." Julia gently told her. "Robert still has his studies to complete, or his Mountie training, depending on what he decides."
Allie nodded slowly.
"And Allie, you have your studies to consider as well. Remember?" She paused. "If Robert is the right man for you, he'll wait. He'll give you room for your dreams, too."
Allie considered everything Julia said. "Thank you for your insight, Julia."
"Anytime, Allie." Julia replied. "You can always come to me. About anything." And she reminded her. "And, we can talk more about this, when your father and I get back, okay?"
"Okay." Allie agreed.
Julia admitted. "I'm going to miss you so much while we are gone, Allie."
"I'm going to miss you, too…" And Allie added onto that. "Mom." At that, Julia hugged Allie, and then slowly, they returned to dancing.
While Julia and Allie danced together, Nathan watched them.
Then he let his eyes wander to some of the other couples on the dance floor. Charlie danced with Rebecca. The feelings between the two of them were obvious, as they had been for a very long time. They weren't fooling anybody, and Nathan simply hoped that one way or the other, they would get their chance. Oh, that one of them would finally bridge the gap. The idea of his mother finding love again, brought a smile to his face.
Gabe and Lillian danced just next to his mother. They were also sweet together. Gabe had had eyes for only one woman since the minute he'd been posted in Brookfield, and as he danced with her now, it seemed that she was almost there. Lillian appeared to return his sentiments, and so, Nathan was happy for his friend.
Mike and Alex were also dancing together. Mike was so evidently smitten, and…awkward. But the funny thing was, Alex was just as awkward, though in a completely different way. And so, somehow, it just seemed to work. Funny how love works out sometimes.
Then Nathan's perusal landed on Joseph and Minnie. These two danced together with a rapport that spoke of many years of love together. There was a familiarity and an intimacy in their movements, that alluded to the depth of their relationship. All fruit of a long and happy marriage. Nathan hoped that he and Julia would one day have that depth and familiarity. He watched this couple's interaction, and wanted that same intimacy in his own marriage. Yes, he and Julia had only been married a few hours, but his goal was a successful, healthy marriage, and a partnership to the full. And he was thankful for Joseph and Minnie's example, to emulate.
The Coulters were another good example. Lee and Rosemary were sweet and tender with each other, and to Nathan, that spoke of a deep love and respect. He observed them for a moment, sitting just next to where he stood, as Lee fussed over her, in her pregnant state.
Rosemary looked up and spotted Nathan, and she spoke up. "It was a beautiful ceremony, Nathan."
Nathan stepped closer and sat down with them. "Thank you, Rosemary." He paused. "And thank you for all of your help, and input, with everything." Nathan looked at Lee. "Both of you. We really appreciate all the car lending, and driving, and advice, and seamstress work." He tried to remember everything his friends had done for them.
Rosemary waved her hand. "Don't even mention it. We were happy to help."
Lee answered, with that typical Lee grin. "It was our honor to be included in your big day."
Nathan replied to both of them. "Well, it wouldn't have gone so smoothly without you, and without your hard work. We really appreciate it."
Rosemary smiled that broadway smile. "Nathan, we're just so happy for you and Julia."
Nathan glanced around the room and wondered about something. Though, he hadn't even noticed until now. "I haven't seen Elizabeth and Little Jack anywhere."
Rosemary pursed her lips. This was a subject she'd nearly driven Lee crazy, discussing. But Elizabeth was still so hard-headed about certain things. And Nathan Grant was one of them. "While I think she really appreciated the invitation, that you and Julia would include her, she didn't think…" Rosemary paused and tried to find the right words. "She didn't want there to be any damper on your special day."
Nathan nodded and then set the record straight. "She wouldn't have put a damper on anything, at least not from our side. Everything with Elizabeth, from my point of view, is water under the bridge." He paused. "Though, I respect her decision." In an effort to understand her point of view, he tried to imagine what it would have been like, if the roles had been reversed. What if Nathan were the one now all alone, and Elizabeth the one getting married, and to Lucas? Would Nathan have been able to attend such a wedding?
Lee piped in, hoping to help. "Nathan, sometimes, women can be…"
Rosemary just turned and looked at her husband, and waited, interested to see how this sentence was going to end.
Nathan took one look at Rosemary's face and tried to help Lee out, before he got himself into hot water. "I'm not sure you should finish that sentence." Nathan told him with a chuckle.
Lee looked at his wife's face and realized he probably shouldn't. At least not in the direction he was originally going. "Women can be…" He finished. "…so wonderful."
They all three laughed out loud and Rosemary told him. "Nice save, honey."
Though finally, Lee tried again. "I was only going to say that: for men, women can be a little hard to understand sometimes." He looked at Rosemary and raised a finger. "I said: sometimes. And this rarely applies to you, Rosie." Lee made sure to cover his tracks. "And I'm sure it rarely applies to Julia." He looked at Nathan. "Women just think differently than men."
Nathan knew there was truth in that statement. And somehow, on the subject of Elizabeth, Nathan knew what Lee was trying to say. Sometimes, women were just a mystery, especially when under stress, or grieving, and Elizabeth had been no exception. And Nathan knew something else deep down: His feelings for Elizabeth Thornton had faded long ago, though, through that whole unpleasant experience, he had learned valuable lessons about how to treat people, and what kind of friends he wanted to have. He didn't really mind if she didn't want to attend his wedding, he probably wouldn't have attended her's either. Though, not because of any unresolved feelings, only because they just weren't really friends anymore. That thought slightly pained him, because she had been so kind to him when he'd first arrived, and they had been good friends at one point. But, it takes two people to restore a friendship and he wasn't sure she was ready or capable to be the kind of friend he required now.
Nathan finally nodded and responded to Lee, on the subject of understanding women. "I think I've learned that one already. Though, thank you, Lee, for the reminder."
Rosemary added. "It was good of you to invite her."
Nathan nodded. "It was actually Allie and Julia's idea." He was honest. Nathan hadn't thought that Elizabeth would want to come, and he'd been right.
"Well, whatever prompted the invitation, I think she just appreciated knowing she was invited." Rosemary told him with a matter-of-fact grin. A long time ago, Rosemary realized that Nathan Grant was way more perceptive than people realized. In fact, he read people, usually exactly right, and had always read Elizabeth like a book. He'd always adjusted, and given her space, when she'd come at him. And she was pretty sure he'd always known how Elizabeth felt about him even when she herself didn't. Rosemary would never understand why her friend hadn't been more brave when it came to Nathan, but then, she also knew that sometimes, things just worked out for the best. Like with her, for example. She had come to Hope Valley to win back Jack, but met Lee instead. Similarly, Nathan had come to protect Elizabeth, but met Julia instead. And when Rosemary saw Nathan and Julia together, it felt just like her and Lee - they were just simply meant to be.
Lee told Nathan. "I left my car parked out front, for later tonight."
Nathan smiled at the thought of driving his wife back to his row house, their row house, which would serve as their married home until the big house was ready. "Thanks, Lee. I'll leave it parked at your house, after."
Lee shook his head. "Nah, it's not worth moving it. Just leave it at your house, and I'll walk down in the morning, to drive you two to the train station."
Nathan nodded his affirmation. "Okay, then. It's a plan. Thank you so much, Lee."
"It's my pleasure to help out. Really, Nathan." He smiled at his friend.
The song changed again, and Nathan's attention returned to the dance floor. Lee looked there too, and suddenly wanted to be a part of the fun. But, he wanted to be part of that fun with his wife. He extended his hand to her. "Rosie, shall we?"
Rosemary happily smiled and asked. "Nathan, would you please excuse us?"
"Of course, have fun, you two." And they headed out onto the floor.
Nathan noticed Elle sitting alone, so he approached and asked her to dance. She accepted, and Nathan led her out onto the floor, just next to the Flynn's.
Jesse and Clara were another couple that were good together, though their relationship hadn't been without hiccups. But together, they had made the choice to weather their storms, and had grown stronger in the process. Nathan hoped he and Julia would always make the same choice, if and when they were ever faced with a storm.
Nathan and Elle worked their way around the dance floor, over near Julia, who was now dancing with Bill. When the music changed again, they switched partners. Nathan passed Elle to Bill, and took back his bride.
When he got her securely in his arms again, he spoke tenderly. "Hi, wife."
She smiled dimples. "Hi, husband."
He leaned close to her ear and told her cutely, "Maybe you should pinch me."
"Pinch you?" She questioned with a little curious smile.
"To make sure this is real." He answered with a charming smile.
Julia chuckled out loud, but admitted softly. "I've already pinched myself like four times since you said I do."
Nathan chuckled under his breath, and insisted. "You have not."
"Oh, yes I have." She told him. "I promise."
He made that crooked smile. "You've made a lot of promises today, Mrs. Grant."
"Yes I have, and I intend to keep every one." She smiled up at him, and pressed closer in. "I love you, Mr. Grant, in case you've forgotten."
"I haven't forgotten." He told her, with a jovial tone. He pulled her in closer as they danced.
Then she searched his face. "Are you having a good time, my love?"
"A very good time." He told her as he gazed down at her. "And you, my darling?"
"A great time." She made a playful guilty face. "I have a confession to make, though."
He picked up on her playfulness and tried to looked concerned. "A confession? Already? We've only been married a few hours." He jokingly drawled.
She laughed softly, and continued. "I hope you don't mind, and won't be jealous. I danced with George, Henry, and Bill."
He chuckled low and teased her, pretending to be shocked. "All those guys?"
Julia laughed heartedly. "Yes, all those guys…that are old enough to be my father."
Nathan laughed with her, and then glanced right. He did a double take, and Julia followed his gaze. Not far from them, Robert was dancing with Allie. Julia watched Nathan's face visibly change…from happy and carefree to uncomfortable…and then to puzzled, and then to fatherly and protective. Julia observed Robert and Allie for a moment. It seemed sweet and innocent - they both looked awkward and shy, but obviously wanted to dance with each other.
Julia looked up at her husband and asked. "How do you feel about…that, my love?"
He watched Allie and Robert a moment more and then cleared his throat. "I'm not sure. It seems innocent enough, but Allie is only thirteen."
Julia nodded. "Yes, I know. I reminded her of that fact earlier, when we had a talk about Robert."
Nathan's eyes quickly met Julia's, surprised. "She talked to you about Robert?"
Julia replied. "Yes. And I advised her not to rush, but to keep things on a friend level with him." She paused. "He has studies to complete, and so does she."
"How did she react to that advice?" He wondered. Allie was typically headstrong, by nature, just like Colleen.
"She seemed to listen and consider my advice. I told her that if it was meant to be, things would work out when the time was right. That Robert would still be there when she was finished with her studies." Julia told him.
Nathan's face looked relieved. "That was very good advice." He finally smiled, though shyly. Then his gaze returned to Allie. She seemed to be enjoying herself, but nothing about their dancing seemed serious. It was just…friendly. He returned his gaze to his wife. "Thank you for being there for her."
Julia smiled. "Of course, Nathan. It's my job now, as her mother, remember?" She cutely gazed at him, then she explained more. "Allie has feelings and just doesn't know what to do with them. We will need to walk with her, and guide her through this season of learning and growing. We can help her make right choices."
Nathan was filled with gratitude for a partner to walk with, this woman in his arms. "Thank you for handling it so well. I look forward to parenting with you. How did you get so good at it already?" He asked her.
Julia smiled. "I'm a woman remember? Plus, I have your great example, to follow." She reminded him. That earned her a smile from Nathan, and a sweet peck on the lips. He lingered there and gazed at her, as they swayed to the music.
Then finally, Nathan glanced one more time at Robert and Allie, feeling much more confident. Now, he had a partner in this, and a good one. A companion to share his load.
Alex approached the dancing newlyweds, and interrupted momentarily to tell them that the next song would be the last. Then it would be time to throw the bouquet, and depart. Nathan thanked her and held Julia close, and they enjoyed the last dance together.
When it was over, Rosemary and Clara made an announcement from the front, and all the guests gathered around. Then, Rosemary instructed all the single ladies to one side of the room, for the bouquet toss. Of course, some of the women were reluctant to go, so Rosemary and Clara started calling out names: Faith, Fiona, Lillian, Grace, Molly. Once a few names were called, many of the other single ladies moved on their own, to avoid being called out.
When Rosemary was satisfied, she walked Julia to the middle of the room and turned her around a few times, very animatedly. Then she faced her so that her back was square to the single ladies.
And then Rosemary and Clara incited the crowd, with excitement, as they counted off. "One, two, three!" And Julia let the bouquet fly, straight over her head, high in the air, toward the women. And low and behold, it fell perfectly in the hands of…Fiona Miller. Just as Julia had hoped.
Fiona's face was surprised and embarrassed, and only got redder when the applause erupted. She scanned the room and found Jake clapping along with the rest of the crowd. And on his face was the biggest most contented smile - the one with those rare two dimples. Julia noticed his face, too. He looked like he'd just pulled in the catch of his life, and was ecstatic about it. He didn't even try to hide his contentment. Fiona glanced down at the bouquet in her hands and then at Julia.
Nathan stood with his mother and watched all of this, amused. They both thoroughly enjoyed the show. But, when it was over, Rebecca knew what that meant. It was almost time to see the bride and groom off. So, she placed her hand on her son's arm. "Are you ready to go?"
Nathan glanced at his wife, still standing in the middle of the room smiling and jovial, and then back at his mother. "Yes." He looked ready, just as he had earlier today.
Rebecca smiled happily and started to say the good byes that she knew were inevitable. "Have a great time on your honeymoon, son. Make the most of every minute." She told him. Though, she already knew that they would have a great time. If that look on Nathan's face, when Julia walked down the aisle, had been any indication.
"Thanks, Mom." He leaned down and hugged her.
Clara spoke up again. "The Bride and Groom will depart soon, so please come and say your goodbyes."
Allie approached and hugged Julia tight. "Have a great time and don't worry about us." Allie told her. "We'll be just fine. Jake is going to take Fiona and me fishing." Something to look forward to. Then Allie added softly. "I love you."
Julia hugged her back tightly and replied. "I love you, too, Allie girl."
Then Allie hugged her Dad. Julia hugged Rebecca, Archie, Jake, and more. Then she gave a long hug to Elle who would be back home by the time they returned from honeymoon.
Elle told her. "I'll be waiting for your visit in the summer. Either stop by New Brunswick, or better yet, perhaps I'll come and join you, for a little while, in Peggy's Cove." She added. "I already mentioned it to Nathan."
"Yes! What a wonderful idea." Julia kept ahold of her Aunt's shoulders. "You know, Nathan will hold you to it. And so will I." She hugged her aunt again. "Elle, we have to make a point to see each other." They both nodded their agreement, like a promise to each other.
More friends and family approached, said their good byes, and congratulated them one more time. Julia hugged Faith, Fiona, the Coulters, Flynn's, and the Brookfield crew. Nathan was busy with his good byes to Gabe, Ben, Penny and Bill. Then they both said good-bye to the Canfields, and then to George, Jimmy, and William, who stood with them.
Then, the wedding guests made a two lines that spilled out the door, and led to Lee's car. Nathan and Julia made their way through the middle, while the guests continued to congratulate and bless them.
When they arrived at the car, Nathan opened the door and got his bride comfortably seated inside. Then he moved around to the driver's side, and climbed in. Bride and groom turned and gave one more long emphatic wave to all their family and friends, before Nathan started the engine.
Then, as the last brilliant colors were delicately fading from the sky, Nathan turned the car toward the row houses, and drove away, with his new bride.
