Once they found the volcano park, Ash and Hau spent some of the time there training while catching Pokemon. Ash caught a Cubone, a Kangaskhan and a Fletchling while Hau caught a Magby and a Salandit. Upon reaching the top, the trio spotted Kiawe in the middle of a stone circle above the natural ground.
"Greetings, trial-goers. My Marowak and I are students of the ancient dances that have been passed down in Alola for generations through the centuries. The trial of Kiawe, you will find it's a bit different then the trials you have faced to this point. But of course, you will attempt it, yes?"
"Yeah!" Both trainers agreed wholeheartedly.
"My trial will test your powers of observation. There will be a dance, and then another. Your task will be to find the difference between the two. Begin!" Three Marowak came onto the circle, but what shocked Ash was that their bodies were black and grey instead of brown and beige, and their bones were on fire with teal-green colored flame!
"Whoa! What Alolan forms are these?!" The Kantonian asked with glee.
"Marowak in Alola aren't ground types, but fire/ghost types." Kaiwe answered. "These Marowak are descendants of Marowak before that have been taught how to use mana, the spiritual energy that flows through everything and everyone. They're just as famous as fire dancers as they are with battling."
"So cool." Ash was amazed that something seen as subpar at best in Kanto could be so much better in Alola. The three Marowak started their dance by tapping their feet. Then they started twirling their bone clubs around super fast while walking in a circle, each at a third of a point in said circle. They then went back into a line where each made a pose. Then they did so again.
"So, what was different between the two dances?" Kiawe asked.
"The middle, duh." Ash said, sort of disappointed. He thought it was going to be like looking for minute details or watch something super elaborate and spot any differences from a prolong and elegant dance routine, but it was very simple. "I thought it was going to be harder." Kiawe and the Marowak became angry.
"Oh, I'm sorry, was the power of dance not good enough for you?" Kiawe asked, insulted. "Maybe you'd just prefer a battle then if they're spectacular dance isn't to your liking?"
"Whoa hey, I'm sorry." Ash quickly apologized. "It's just I've seen the kind of dances of authentic fire dancers here in Alola do and... what I saw wasn't anything like that except for the fire spinning."
"Fine then. If the power of dance alone doesn't impress you, then maybe a proper battle will. Call out your Pokemon so that you all can witness the beauty of dance and battling all in one." The middle Marowak stepped forth, twirling its club around as a challenge for having its honor insulted.
"Alright. Brionne, I choose you!" Ash sent out his water starter.
"Use Flame Wheel!" Spinning around with enough speed to create a wheel of fire around itself, the fire/ghost type went on the attack.
"Water Gun!" Ash requested. The water type spewed out a stream of water which managed to extinguish the incoming wheel, filling the air with steam which was blown away by the high altitude winds. That one Water Gun managed to defeat the Marowak.
"So you're powerful enough to one shot a regular Marowak. But what about... a totem Marowak!" Kiawe shouted as a bigger one at 5.7 feet tall leapt up from behind the back of the ledge, and landed in the circle, ready for battle. It glowed with power. "Use Bone Club!" Moving at a surprising speed, this Bone Keeper Pokemon actually managed land a solid hit on the Pop Star Pokemon, sending her back as she cried out in pain. She landed near Ash's feet.
"Come on Brionne, we can do this!" The Totem Bone Keeper Pokemon called out for assistance, and a Salazzle crawled up the side of the mountain to lend its aid. It looked like a sleek black and fuchsia colored lizard with a smug face. Water Gun!"
"Use Bonemerang!" Kiawe ordered. Throwing its bone, it was able to keep the spray of water at bay, filling the air with more steam as the bone club returned to the fire/ghost type. "Now use Dragon Rage!" Salazzle breathed out some dark purple flame like energy which bathed the water starter as she screamed from the pain. At this point, she was bruised and singed, but her determined gaze showed she was far from down and out. In fact, she even started to glow blue from Torrent kicking in.
"Flame Wheel!" Spinning around to create a bigger attack, it tried to get in close but the water starter had other ideas as she spewed out a barrage of glowing bubbles.
"Brionne learned Bubble Beam!" Misty gasped with joy. "The bubbles proved quite effective in not only stopping the Flame Wheel, but even pushing it back actually as the fire/ghost type was handily blasted off the top of the mountain, with the fire/ghost type yelling in surprise as it fell down the volcano.
"So strong. The trial captain gulped, but remembered he still had Salazzle. "Dragon Rage, again!" With its superior speed, the Toxic Lizard Pokemon breathed draconic fire which finally defeated Brionne as she was blasted into some rocks.
"Brionne, return!" Ash withdrew his starter. "Congratulations on learning Bubble Beam. Well done. Mudbray, I choose you!" As Ash sent out his ground type, Kiawe made his move.
"Once more, Dragon Rage!"
"Use Bulldoze!" Even as Mudbray was enveloped with draconic fire, the Donkey Pokemon was able to lift her hooves up and slam them into the ground, sending out shockwaves which slammed into the Toxic Lizard Pokemon, sending it flying down the mountain as well as it hissed with fright. "Alright, we did it!" Ash cheered.
"Way to take the heat Ash!" Hau laughed.
"You sure burned through the trial!" Misty giggled before groaning. "Oh my goodness that was so bad."
"It admittedly was, yes." Hau chuckled.
"Well, you certainly are spectacular at battling, I'll give you that." Kiawe acknowledged, drawing attention from Ash. "But how can I be sure to call you worthy after insulting my trial?" After realizing this still happened after saying the dance segment was disappointing, he dropped down like earlier and said,
"I'm sorry I disrespected your trial. Even though I won the battle part, I still want to know about the dances that this region has practiced for centuries. Please show me the art."
"Yeah, me too!" Hau requested eagerly. "I may have grown up in Alola, but I still find fire dancing to be really cool!" For once, the trial captain smiled.
"Well, I'm glad to see you still have an appreciation for our dance culture. Very well, I shall teach you the basics of fire dancing." The moment was interrupted however when Misty's egg began to glow.
"Wait, it's starting to hatch?!" Misty gasped as she took her backpack off and took the egg out, along with everyone around gathering around her. The egg pulsated with light, becoming brighter and brighter until they couldn't see it as features began to form. Ears sprouted out, a tail plumed out, and it stood on all fours. When the glowing ended, what stood in the egg's place was an Eevee in Misty's lap.
"Eevee." It said with a smile and big cute eyes.
"Wow, it hatched! It's an Eevee!" Misty gasped again as she held it up in her arms. "Awww, hello Eevee. Welcome to the world." Everyone marveled the wonder of Misty's new Pokemon. Even Kiawe was smiling.
"How spectacular. Witnessing the hatching of a baby Pokemon is truly a miracle to behold at any time." Turning to Ash, he said, "Oh right. Even though you didn't clear the trial normally, you are willing to learn the dances and defeated the Totem Pokemon. I think that makes you worthy of having this Fireium Z. Consider it yours."
"Thanks Kiawe."
"Here's how you do the dance." After showing him the proper poses for it, the trial captain explained, "That will allow you to use Inferno Overdrive. Be careful you don't burn everything down with it though."
"I will."
"Oh yeah! That Z crystal will be mine!" Hau proclaimed. "Me and Torracat will use that to great effect!"
"I'll wait in anticipation for when you can take the trial when the Pokemon are healed up. Now, let's get to learning about dances."
"Watch closely Eevee. You're going to watch something really cool." Misty told her new baby as they watched the boys learn about Alolan dance forms. Today has been very good.
