Chapter 228

Kitana's POV

For the first time in weeks, she was scared.

She had nowhere to go and no one to talk to. She could feel inside herself now, links to the other people Argeddion gifted his magic to. But not Argeddion. That man had told the truth when he said he killed him. Argeddion was dead. She could feel lots of people Argeddion had gifted but now she was alone without Doran and Seán, it just made the loneliness worse.

She was meant to be special, not one of many. She was meant to be chosen and strong, not a slightly better experiment than the others, or even just an experiment those people hadn't caught yet.

She left the house, unsure of her destination but needing to get out of the house and move. Everything was so stifling without Doran's constant noise. Poor, stupid, dead Doran. What she wouldn't give to have him back, as useless as he sometimes was. He was strong and followed her and listened, when he felt like anyway. And now he was dead. Destroyed in front of her eyes. That man, whoever he was, the handsome one. He had killed him. Shot him through his head in a fraction of a second when she'd been distracted. She had no idea how the girl had done it, stealing a piece of her magic and using it herself. It was worrying and, if she was honest with herself, scary.

Kitana threw herself into the air and flew, following her magic to the other gifted people. She flew below the clouds, enjoying seeing all the sights, until she was at some dark, grey, nasty little town. It looked poor and broken, somewhere people on benefits or council housing would be. Not where she imagined magic people capable of killing Argeddion would live.

She followed the pull of the magic until she was at some boxy, stout building with crumbling curbs outside and surrounded by old cars. It was late evening and it didn't look like many people were around, but she didn't dare go in all alone. She could feel Seán in there, and Elsie. Their magics were stronger, and she was used to Seán's so she could tell from his that Elsie was there. She sneered. Of course fat, ugly little Elsie was in there. Kitana expected she had betrayed them instantly, hopeful of a moment of limelight away from Kitana. She was always vying for Seán's attention, but it was obvious he preferred her. And she was sure Seán thought Elsie was ugly and fat, he'd told her that himself. She had no idea how Elsie managed to live being so ignorant and stupid all the time, and yet she managed it, constantly ruining Kitana's day.

Sighing, she soared away, knowing there was nothing she could do about Seán. At least he was alive. She'd have to go back to find the Dead Men and the girl that worked with them. Then, she'd get her revenge.

When she got back, she got straight in the shower and shaved, as she did every evening, and used the skincare that was in the bathroom before going down to the kitchen to think of something to eat. She had been going to steal something or force a takeaway to give her food using her powers, but now she wanted to hide from the magic cops. There wasn't much in the house she could eat, but there was a pizza. She'd refused to have any of the other pizza with the boys to appear more ladylike and thin, but she desperately wanted one now, something Elsie could never manage. At least there was something good about being alone. She could do anything she liked and no one saw.

Of course, the moment she put it in the oven, that was when Seán came slamming through the back door.

"Seán, finally!" She said, trying to hide her shock. "I thought you'd betrayed me."

"What? No, I'd never do that," he said, surprised.

"Hmm, good. Did you see Elsie?"

"Yeah, dumb cunt actually did betray us. She made a friend, some big muscly guy with scars everywhere. He's way uglier than her."

"Ew," she grimaced. "Well, it's good you're out because I have a plan. We need to kill those people."

"Yeah, the Dead Men. That's their group name," Seán said, throwing himself into a chair. "Apparently they killed Doran. Kitana, please tell me that wasn't true."

She looked away and glared at the wall. "They killed him," she said simply.

"Fuck," he said quietly, standing and pacing. "FUCK!" He punched the ball, leaving a hole.

"Yeah. It was that handsome one. He said he killed Argeddion, Seán. And I don't feel him, I don't feel Argeddion's pull. I think they really did kill him."

"Seems that way," he said, looking at the hole.

"It was the handsome one," she repeated quietly. "He killed Argeddion and Doran. He's the one we need to kill first. Then we'll kill the girl. She's the one that got you captured."

"I remember."

"And then we'll get the rest."

He nodded slowly. "I'll let you kill the girl if I can kill the skeleton. We'll kill Doran's murdered together," he proposed.

She nodded. "I like it."
