Author's note: Second chapter today because the first was so short. Will update once a week from now on.
The scream was heard far.
Danny had started to jog to the path but when he heard his partner's scream, he ran back as fast as he could and was the first to reach Steve. The latter had stopped screaming but was still groaning loudly while trying to turn himself to see what was wrong with his leg.
Danny immediately saw what the problem was and shouted "Steve! Stop moving! You'll only make it worse."
He could see the rest of the team approaching too and knelt down beside his friend. Taking one of Steve's hands in his and putting his other one on Steve's chest he said "Try to calm, babe. I know it hurts like crazy. But you have to try to lie still and breathe more evenly. Max is going to have a look, alright?"
Steve was in agony and couldn't answer but he tried to do what his friend had told him.
Danny gave Max a nod to start with the examination. Unfortunately, though there wasn't much to examine.
Steve's foot was caught in what looked like an animal trap. If that wasn't bad enough the trap looked homemade and whoever had made it, really must have hated animals.
Unlike most traps which usually have either short or none steel teeth to "just" hold the animal in place this one had each double rowed long and short and very pointed ones.
The trap itself was attached to a long chain with a bolt at the end which in turn was driven deeply into a tree trunk.
One glance was enough for Max to know that the foot was in bad shape and by the way the leg was lying he knew there was much more damage than just the ankle.
"Okay. Lieutenant Kelly, you have to run back to the cars. I need disinfectant, a lot of bandages, foils and blankets.
Officer Kalakaua, you have to call a medivac.
Detective Williams, you have to sit down, take the commander's upper body close to you, so you can keep him from moving when I say so.
"What…what are you going to do?" Danny asked although he was pretty sure he didn't want to hear the answer.
"Not now," Max whispered not wanting to add even more stress to his patient.
Hearing Max's words just confirmed Danny's suspicion. He didn't really feel comfortable with the plan but he knew he had to trust Max on this.
"Medivac needs 20 minutes," Kono interrupted his thoughts.
"That's not good but still better than using one of the cars," Max answered.
Another groan from Steve made Danny return his attention to his friend. He used a soft tone and reassuring words while simultaneously stroking Steve's arm or through his hair.
He was so occupied with the task that he hadn't even noticed Chin's return.
"Thanks Lieutenant," Max said. "Now kneel down. I need your help."
After Chin had done what he had been asked for, Max whispered something that Danny couldn't hear.
"No! No!" Chin burst out. "Why? We can wait for the helicopter. They can do it in the hospital – with proper equipment," Chin disagreed.
"No, we can't wait," Max answered back. "It's moving," he said with a very low voice.
"What?" Chin cried out. Then he looked at the trap. It was barely visible but millimeter by millimeter the teeth sank deeper into their boss's ankle. He realized Max was right but he wasn't ready to do what he had been told.
"Why…don't you do it?" he wanted to know.
"Because I have to take care of the first aid afterwards, "Max stated matter-of-factly. "I know it is scary and you don't want to do it but you have to. If those short spikes go through his anklebone too…"
"they gonna chop off his foot," Chin finished the sentence in his head. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before he nodded "Okay, I'll do it."
While Max had explained to Chin and Kono what they had to do, Danny was still busy comforting the SEAL, who was still in agony but trying to make as less noise as possible.
Danny hadn't noticed Max addressing him until the medical examiner had used a more urgent tone. When Danny looked up the coroner said "we are ready. On three."
He didn't leave Danny any time to argue, held his fingers up and non-vocally counted to three.
Chin opened the trap, spreading it as wide as possible. Kono and Max carefully eased the leg out of it.
Danny held their boss as tight as he could to prevent him from hurting himself further.
Steve screamed at the top of his lungs.
