Okay, so I have to confess. The last chapter's ending was primarily thanks to Wonderwomanbatmanfan. Thank you for your comments, they really make my day!
I was asked to have Steve to get jealous and flirty, well… our Captain has come out to play. It was fun to write and I do plan on showing a bit more of this side of their relationship as well but at the appropriate times. This time, it was for fun but also because it fit so well with where they were. I know Steve wasn't flirty, but come on! Having Dalla flirt with a male nurse as a distraction? Yeah, he's not going to let that one slide.
I haven't decided if Dalla will join her brothers for Ragnarok or not, but I'm leaning more towards no, just because of how I have written Odin, and the brothers wouldn't want to risk her anyway. Still, that would mean she is present for Civil War, and we all know how she feels about Bucky and Steve is her boyfriend. But does that mean she will side with them or will she agree with Tony? She is a princess and knows what warriors unchecked can do, but she has always wanted the freedom to choose her own path. She can't sit on the sidelines in that fight and it will come down to what she believes in more, protecting the many or freedom.
This chapter will play on what is actually said in the movie, but tie it back to Steve's dominant side, but there is a bit of flirty Steve too. So Chapter 29 might just be a smut chapter. :)
Differences in this chapter: Dalla is with Steve in the mall while Nat runs things from the car in the parking lot.
After a moment, Steve and Dalla placed comms in their ears to talk to Natasha. While Dalla knew how to use Midgardian tech, she was still new to hacking. However, it took a lot of convincing on her part to get Steve and Natasha to agree that it had to be her.
"You know I'm right!" she said. "Natasha being seen with us would be a big mess! If it's unknown that she has sided with us, she can be our eyes and ears on the inside until we choose to move!"
"Dalla, we don't know what we will be facing!" Steve said.
"This way, we all won't be compromised!"
"We need more help!"
"Don't I get a say?" Natasha asked.
"What is it, Romanoff?" Dalla growled.
"I can get into the files better than you. I should be the one going."
"Yet, neither of you sees how that works against us rather than for us!"
"Then, explain."
"Right now, they are only after Steve and me! If we keep it that way, there's less fallout! You can stall SHIELD and we have someone we can rely on right in the lion's den!"
"You trust me that much?"
Dalla took her hands. "Nat, I can read minds. Remember? While you were torturing me with that drive here, I thought I would take a look. Not only do I trust you with my life, but also Steve's."
Tears glistened in Natasha's eyes. "Thank you."
"After I get what Steve and I need, you head back to SHIELD. Do what you have to so they don't suspect you."
Natasha pulled out a burner phone and gave it to her. "Don't turn it on until you have information to send. The burner phone I have is its only contact."
The two women hugged it out before Steve sighed and said, "I still don't like this."
"I know, Captain," Dalla smiled, "but we can't afford any more casualties."
Steve pulled Dalla to him, kissing her hard and deep. He hadn't forgotten how she distracted the male nurse and now, she was putting herself in the line of fire. She tried to stand her ground and fight him for dominance, but as soon as his arms wrapped around her, his hand on the back of her neck, and his tongue dove into her mouth, she was lost and moaning so that he was swallowing the sound.
He pulled back just enough to place his forehead to hers, their lips pulling apart and their breathing heavy, so he could say, "Nothing better happen to you."
"Nothing bad can happen with you by my side," she replied.
"I guess my skills aren't appreciated," Natasha called after them.
Dalla looked back at her, walking backward towards the automatic doors, saying, "Payback for hitting all those bumps on the way here. He doesn't need any help torturing me."
Natasha laughed, shaking her head. Of course, the goddess knew what she had been up to. The couple thought they were sly with what they were doing, but Natasha had to prove she knew what was going on. Steve would tell Natasha how he was happy with Dalla but he wanted more opportunities to bring out "the Captain."
Natasha smirked and replied, "Can never have too much of that torture."
Dalla was about to respond, but Steve growled, turned Dalla around, and whispered, "That's not being good, kitten. Someone could hear us."
Dalla blushed. She had forgotten they were on the run for a moment. Then, she felt shame. She had never slipped up like that before. Dalla's playful attitude disappeared and her face hardened. Steve noticed. Just before they walked inside, he pulled her behind one of the pillars at the front of the mall.
"Talk to me, sweetheart," he whispered.
She looked up at him, hesitating for a moment before saying, "We are on the run and I let the mission slip from my mind. I've never been distracted before. I'm disappointed in myself and ashamed that-"
He kissed her softly. "It happens to the best of us, Dalla."
Tears formed in her eyes. "But I know better."
He brushed away any tears that slid down her cheeks. "Just because you were distracted for a moment doesn't change how skilled," he kissed her cheek, "how amazing," he kissed her neck, "or how wonderful you are." He kissed her, causing her to suck in a breath. "You, Dalla Odinsdottir, are so breathtaking, I don't know what I ever did to catch your eye. I count myself lucky that you choose me. I know I'm not the easiest man to live with."
She stared into his eyes, this time with tears of happiness. "You are the most selfless man I have ever known. You never give up, even when the odds are stacked against you. You are kind and caring and sweet. After what I did on Asgard, I'm the one who's lucky to have you."
He kissed her again, this time pouring all of the love he felt for her into it. She hugged him to her, her own adoration filling him. He continued to soothe her for a moment more, telling her without words that everything was fine and how much she lit up his world. Once Dalla felt better, he took her hand and turned her back to the doors. She laid her head on his shoulder, thankful to have her soldier in her life.
The couple walked into the mall. Dalla had been on her fair share of undercover missions, so she was more at ease. However, it was the first time she had ever had to avoid being captured. Steve was nervous and kept looking around. This was the first time he was in this type of situation too. Both of them wanted to run to their destination and back out. They hoped Natasha managed to hack into the mall's security system and had eyes on them. The sigh in their ears confirmed it for them.
"Guys," the widow said, "the first rule of being on the run: don't run, walk."
"How could you tell?" Dalla asked.
"You both look antsy, though Dalla is hiding it better."
"If I run in these shoes," Steve said, "they're going to fall off."
"You never have a problem with that at home," Dalla commented with a smile.
"Kitten," Steve warned as they came to the store they were looking for.
Natasha chuckled before she said, "The drive has a Level Six homing program, so as soon as you boot up, SHIELD will know where you are."
"How much time will we have?" Steve asked.
"Nine minutes."
"Starting now," Dalla said, plugging in the drive.
Dalla and Natasha began working together. Natasha had to instruct the goddess at times on what to input, but Dalla was doing most of it on her own. Steve knew she had been working on her skills so that she would be able to help on more missions. She would tell everyone that it was because she didn't want to be left out of something important just because she was lacking a talent. However, Steve knew his princess. She had wanted to learn so that Natasha could have more breaks as the Widow seemed to always be called on for the intel runs. Between Tony and Natasha, Dalla was able to get through a lot of security systems and files, but Level Six was slightly out of her realm of expertise.
"Fury was right about the ship," Dalla said, the shock she felt hidden from any onlookers, but her connection with Steve allowed him to feel it. "Somebody's trying to hide something."
"The drive is protected by some sort of AI," Natasha continued. "It keeps rewriting itself to counteract our commands."
"Can you two override it?" Steve asked.
"The person who developed this is slightly smarter than the two of us," Natasha said.
"Only slightly," Dalla said, knowing she and Natasha together could hack anything. "Why? Getting nervous, Captain?"
"I thought you were going to be good, kitten," Steve said, reminding her of his promise earlier.
Her thighs clenched as she said, "Why be good when I can have my Captain play with me tonight?"
He growled in her ear, causing Natasha to say, "Hey, ancient teens. Think with your heads and not your nasty bits." Natasha ducked down as she saw STRIKE appear. "Guys, we have to hurry. Time for that creepy focus you two do."
Dalla cleared her throat and said, "Let's try running a tracer." She saw Steve's confused face out of the corner of her eye as she typed on the computer. "It's a program that SHIELD developed to track hostile malware. So, if we can't read the file, maybe we can find out where it came from."
"Wasn't that the last hacking lesson you learned from me?" Natasha chuckled.
Before Steve or Dalla could respond, an employee at the Apple store came up and asked, "Can I help you guys with anything?"
"Improvise!" Natasha hissed.
"Oh, no!" said Dalla with a smile, her voice full of excitement as she wrapped her arms around Steve in a loving embrace. "My fiance was just helping me with some honeymoon destinations."
"Right," Steve said, smiling but trying to hide how flustered he was. "We're getting married."
"Congratulations," the long-haired man replied. "Where are you guys thinking about going?"
Steve peaked at the computer screen and saw a location. "New Jersey."
"Oh." Steve looked at the man, waiting to see if he would call the bluff. "I have the exact same glasses."
Dalla, sensing an opportunity, replied, "Wow, you two are practically twins."
"Kitten," Steve hissed.
The employee hadn't heard the comment and said, "Yeah, I wish." He motioned to all of Steve's body. "Specimen." he held up his employee badge. "If you guys need anything. I've been Arron."
"Thank you," Steve replied, watching Aaron leave.
Dalla chuckled when he was gone and said, "Well, safe to say you may have a new boyfriend, Captain."
"Not the time, kitten," he responded, looking back at the computer, his arm around her waist. "Engaged?"
"It was either that or we were having an affair and looking for a hotel."
"Way to put me on the spot. I'll add that to your punishment later" He looked at his watch. "You two said nine minutes. Come on."
"Relax," said Natasha. "We got it."
Dalla gave him a smile until they both saw what was on the screen. Wheaton, NJ. Natasha saw their shock through the cameras.
"You two know it?" the Widow asked.
"Used to," Dalla said.
"Let's go," Steve ordered, grabbing the drive.
He turned in time to see two STRIKE agents walk past and take in the people around them. As Steve and Dalla walked out of the store, the two turn around and signal to two others.
"Standard tac-team," he informed her. "Two behind, two across," they both saw another pair of agents coming towards them, "two coming straight at us. If they make us, I'll engage, you hit the south escalator to the metro. Nat, it's best you get out of here."
"Already on the streets," she said. "Destroy your comms when you get out of there. Can't have them trace them back to me. Good luck, guys."
Dalla had enough. Natasha's part was to look like she had no clue what was going on. Dalla's was to stick with Steve and she'd be damned if she was going to abandon him. She remembered a small mission she had been on with Clint.
"Shut up and put your arm around me," she ordered, knowing Steve would add it to their fun later but her face was all business. "Laugh at something I said."
"What?" Steve asked, confused but as a warning.
"Do it."
He draped his arm over her shoulder and laughed, their heads close to obscure their faces. It was one of the fakest laughs Dalla had heard from him and she planned on teasing him once they got out of trouble. However, to anyone on the outside, Steve's laugh was real, maybe even flirtatious. Her matching chuckle would leave no one the wiser.
The couple got on the down escalator to go back to the exit, Dalla in front of Steve That's when they spotted Rumlow coming up the opposite escalator. Dalla thought fast. Okay, maybe it was an excuse in case everything went south, but still. After all the girl's nights out with Nat to go shopping and all the couples they would pass, she knew it had a chance of working.
Dalla turned to her boyfriend and said, "Kiss me."
Steve was shocked by her request, considering the situation, and asked, "What?"
"Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable."
Steve saw a couple of teens out of the corner of his eye, looking like they were trying to eat each other's faces off to a corner and how people avoided them like the plague. "Yes, they do."
Exasperated, knowing how often they had made others feel uncomfortable with their own makeout sessions, Dalla took the back of Steve's neck and pulled his lips to hers. Once the surprise of it left him, less than a second after their mouths connected, he started a battle for who was in charge. They were so lost in the kiss, Steve had to catch Dalla at the bottom of the escalator to keep her from falling. Both of them chuckled as she blushed.
He held her hand as they made their way to the exit. They got out and ran to the nearest car that was open. Steve hotwired it and unlocked her door. They climbed in and made their way out of DC. The highway out of town felt like the proverbial Memory Lane, only it was now tainted by whoever their enemy was.
