Well, my second dentist only found a small cavity yesterday, while the first one said I had four and need to get a crown done. I want to believe a dentist wouldn't do something like that, but even if not as high-tech, the second dentist went over the x-rays with me and showed me what he suspected was told were cavities to me. Looks like my upper teeth cavities were just my other teeth making shadows since at a different angle everything was perfectly white. Damn dentist giving me anxiety. Now I'm going to be wondering if I need to see a third dentist.
Anyways, here is
Chapter 6
January 17th
Ainzs POV
Everything went well with Taylor, he knew because he had gone to watch while invisible. Now he had to deal with a far more serious problem, one he had only a few hours to figure out. "I have no clue how items work here, does class even matter anymore, and how do level and class restrictions behave " Ohh, in-game it was just the fact you couldn't wear the gear, in some cases, you would receive debuffs for the gear you were not set up for. But in real life, will the items just not work? "I don't want all my bluffing to come up short, having myself look like a fool when she tries to put on equipment and she just can't. I need to test this out somehow." He would need some test subjects, homeless made the most sense to avoid people finding out, but felt like it would fit with the whole heroic image Taylor wanted.
An hour later, standing in an open field outside the city limits, a dark Gastly figure dragged through a void in space his answer. Perfect, a merchant won't be missed and is a clear criminal. It hadn't taken him long to come up with the idea and unlike the other criminal organizations, the merchants wouldn't notice when a few members went missing. His current assistants were a group of elder liches he had summoned for their ability to cast invisibility and message him whenever they found a lone merchant.
"Might as well start with the health potions, it's my only way to heal Taylor right now". Like a child playing with bugs and uncaring about their lives, Ainz proceeded to rip off an arm only to watch it grow back with a few splashes of healing liquid. "Interesting, unlike the game a full potion isn't required but would it depend on severity". Ignoring the cries and pleas, he performed a small cut. "Let's try a drop…not enough, a few more then". Excitement coursed through Ainz, it had healed right away with a total of 6 drops. Healing potions were limited, sure he had collected hundreds and possibly thousands but still he feared running out. Knowing he could now make each last longer made stomaching their use easier, it also made him wonder what other consumables had changed.
...
"Another disappointment" waving the summon to bring another specimen "level restrictions so far only cause someone to lose health when their user, is more than ten levels below its restrictions. More concerning was finding out how race-restricted items now reacted". Death was the result in all cases but it seemed to change by which item he had equipped. Equipment meant for undead races caused people to decay while even those made for human-like races tried to alter the body forcefully. Seeing a woman trying to grow long ears while her ribs cracked and morphed, showed how even a human-like race of elves required drastic changes. He had even been able to keep her alive with a full potion for a while. But then ten minutes later she broke apart as if she was a Frankenstein monster whose seems had come apart.
In the end, his success came from items that lacked restrictions, such as those for low-level players or those bought with cash. Beyond that, it seemed class restrictions behaved the same with none of those new forceful side effects. "Haha, well there was the item meant for paladins, that one had a high positive karma restriction, so when activated the man burned up instead of healing himself. His lifestyle had apparently built up too much negative karma."
Bringing in hopefully his last test subject, a young merchant girl whose stats most matched Taylor's and whose karma wasn't too bad, he began to equip her with everything he wanted to give Taylor. The girl had gone from scared to confused, the shinier items seemed to bring about some excitement. Ainz for his part was satisfied, canceling his summons, he opened the gate back to Hebert's home. In that clearing where over ten corpses should be, only ash and a pungent smell remained.
Taylor's POV
Running up her porch, dodging the loose floorboard, she hurriedly opened her front door and looked for Ainz. She spotted him standing by her dining table, the table itself was filled up with jewelry and clothes, it seemed without her dad around he preferred to show his undead nature. 'I can't blame him, everything was hard enough yesterday without dad freaking over Ainz's skinless state'.
Ainz hearing all the noise she made, had him looking over, " ahh Taylor, your home, I hope the day went well for you". It had, the situation with black well ended better than expected. Another reason she found today to be an improvement was how distracted Sophia was, ohh she was angrier than usual but turns out an upset Sophia lashes out at everyone for once, She hadn't even stayed after art class to torment her, stomping away when the bell rang with a confused emma chasing her like a dog. The only ones who focused on her today had been madison and her followers, who had made jabs at her appearance, not-so-quiet comments about her smelling like trash, and did the normal childish pranks madison was fond of in Mr. Gladys's class.
"Come over, I finally settled on the best equipment for you, if you really want to be a hero". He left it as a question. To this, she quickly nodded, of course, she wanted to be a hero. "Very well," he said, then he just waved her over towards the table. "First, I have two rings which you should wear at all times, in and out of your costume. If they work as they did in my world, these two can keep you safe. Handing her a silver ring, with only a line engraved around it, she carefully place it over her left-hand index finger. "Wow," she had not expected it to shrink into a perfect fit. " so what does it do". She hoped it was a forcefield or helped her fly like Ainz. "No it's not" ' ohh, guess I said that out loud'. "This is a ring of mind shielding, while I haven't found out about any masters in Brockton bay, it's best to avoid the possibility. It should be strong enough for any low-level master and those whose powers are subtle". While Taylor didn't see the need, his explanation made sense, and really who can say no to wanting protection against mastering?
"Now this is a ring called invasive death, as it sounds, it will once a day cause you to dodge any attack that would result in death" he explained while handing her a golden ring with a red gem in the center. Once more the ring resized to fit her finger. "Amazing" it really was, a shame it was only once a day but she needed to know how it worked just to be sure.
"So do I need to activate it or something and how does it dodge exactly".
"Ahh, just wearing it is enough, same as the ring of mind shielding. Just so you know any attack that won't cause instant death won't count, for example, someone aiming to cut your arm or even an attack that will cause bleeding. While it doesn't sound too helpful, It's perfect against instant death from assassin classes or those who deal high damage. Seems ainz spotted her incredulous look cause he changed his explanation. If someone planned to snipe you or go for an attack strong enough to wipe you out, something you normally wouldn't have time to avoid, then the spell would teleport you somewhere safe, It would be up to you to react before a second attack comes". Once more she wasn't so sure about how helpful the ring would be in heroics, so far her power was not dying instantly and was being safe from Masters. 'ok both those sounded impressive if only limiting 'she had hoped for something with an offensive capability.
Looking at Ainz's boned finger he had rings on each finger and imagined each had a power like these ." Hey Ainz " she didn't want to seem ungrateful, but he had ten and Ainz really made it seem like he had many more with him. "Is there a reason I only got two rings, I see you have ten and I'm guessing they are all enchanted like these two".
Ainz nodded in agreement "yes, nicely spotted. The Truth is most of the gear from my world requires as I said before levels and specialization. It seems everyone in this world, or at least those I've checked counting yourself, are level one. While I can't be sure you won't go up, at your level any more rings would cause damage to the soul. That is why I'm restricted to items that either have low-level requirements or are specialized for anyone to use". Not a total lie as one of his tests showed trying to pass the gear limit ended with the test subject's life getting drained away.
It made sense but really "Every time you explain, you really make it sound like a game".
Ainz made a confused head tilt "game, well if that helps you understand. Then that is fine, but sadly you are restricted to a few items. Now let me give you your costume" handing her a brown robe, a black mask, and a few other items "Put them on, It will be easier to explain everything else once you wear it". Nodding in agreement she grabbed them before heading to her room.
Ainz took preparations seriously it would seem. He told her the day before that he would look into getting her gear she could use to debut as a hero. Knowing how many spells and abilities ainz had and how he explained his gear would provide similar effects, even if at a lower level, she had been excited. Throughout her school day, she had fantasized about flight, powerful attacks, and other fantastical powers to act out her childhood dreams. Yet listening to ainz explaining his reasoning for what he decided to give her, it was clear she was lacking ainz's experience and still being childish about it. She was so excited about what powers she could have, she didn't even think about the dangers of being a hero and what dangers she should prepare for ….Still, she somewhat felt he took it to another level.
These thoughts were just distractions, cause she wanted to avoid how her new clothes made her look like she sacrifice children and prayed to evil gods inside her basement. 'Really this..this, ahh everyone will think I'm part of the fallen' A dark solid face mask, which combined with the tattered brown robe whose only additional characteristic was the black hood cord. Ohh it was magical for sure, the oversize robe shrank to fit her just fine and the mask had some effect to give her face a dark void look. The problem is that it only gets worse after, she was also given to wear black leather boots and gloves that both shared the masks void effect. If she had to describe it all, she likened it the being the opposite of the local cape called purity. Instead of brightness, she was unseen darkness, who then decided to dress like a dungeon and dragon necromancer or more likely a broke villager.
Her power as far as she could tell pretty much boiled down to summoning a demon lord from dnd, yeah ainz would likely argue against that, but his own description of how his spells worked all seems to be typical game mechanics. So yeah, her power was either, reverse Isekai a demon lord or create such a realistic projection with trump like powers.
It's sad how bad her life had become if a demon lord is currently the kindest and most reliable person in her life, without getting into weird thoughts of whether he was just created with her power or like he said, was brought from his world. Both possibilities seemed insane, a world where game logic is real, or her power recreating a game boss and making him real. Honestly, she was hoping the former as it would make her only friend real and not just something pathetic like being friends with a fake realistic projection. 'No, his actions were past anything she could make, and the fact he had tangent items he could give out meant he was more than just a projection, right'? Putting her thoughts away, she was going down to talk to Ainz.' that and to complain, What kind of fashion choice was this.' Grabbing the leather satchel Ainz included, she made her way downstairs upset about it all 'why didn't he at least tell me i didn't need to change unless he expected her to go nude under it all? Actually, that is possible, isn't ainz nude under the robes'? As weird as that was, it wasn't so embarrassing since he was just bones. Still something she decided not to talk about.
Ainz's pov
Ainz was pretty glad he was undead, cause he would have been sweating buckets when Taylor commented that everything sounded like a game. 'damn, I don't know why I pretended to be an overlord. Ahh, but how embarrassing would it be if I confess now, that I'm just a guy who was pretending? It sounded cringey just admitting it to myself. Taylor would probably lose all her respect for me, no I can't ever let anyone know. Damn you UIlbert, I'm sure it was somehow your fault I'm like this.' A flash of a yellow outfit went through him "yup it was all Ulberts' fault'
Still, everything went well in testing and he got Taylor enough gear for her to go out to be a hero. He really would have preferred for her to avoid danger, as his life currently rested on her survival. But when she spoke about being a hero and helping those in need, all he could think was how much like Touch me she sounded. 'if it had been Touch Me, to be summoned, he was sure he would have run out with Taylor to stop any injustice. But I can't, bring myself to be so reckless. He wasn't a hero and he lacked any desire to help anyone, while his undead nature was probably the reason, he was sure it wouldn't be so different from his human self. Life in the twenty-second century had shaped him and most to be selfish.
'I can at least help Taylor grow the way he helped me. It doesn't hurt I could use her to test other changes'
Putting those thoughts aside, he glanced around Taylor and her dad's house. He found it quite nice 'compared to the depressing thing that passed for his own home, this felt really well maintained and spacious'. He likely had a few minutes, so he kept looking around the living room till he spotted an old portrait by the stairs, his curiosity had him picking it up ' ahh so this is her mom' he had figured she had passed away, but looking at young Taylor's carefree smile and comparing it to how was now, made their situation pretty depressing and showed how much it had affected her. Even now when she smiled talking about being a hero, it lacked that carefree look. Instead, her smile seemed ready to fail, as if, like she wanted to be happy but was prepared to be disappointed.
Looking up to see if she was done, he let out a small chuckle, ' I can already imagine how frustrated she will be with the outfit ' he knew she wanted something heroic, like those in comics or maybe like that of Alexandria, a costume that screamed female heroin. Maybe some of his guildmates had left behind gear in Nazarik that fit that image, but right now he had none of it. While his hoarding was a joke among his guildmates, something he couldn't argue just by the number of health potions he had, it never got bad enough to carry random things, 'besides my gacha items, I've spent too much on those to throw away'. "Possibly only Perochino would have had outfits like that in his inventory, but it would have been illegal to make a girl wear".
So all he had was his necromancy specialized gear and to his shame, in his early days of playing, he took that look too far. Yes, his early days should not be spoken of, nothing but cringe. A specific NPC came to mind and Ainz shivered.'Yes definitely, those days shall remain unspoken of'. The main reason he had still given her his old necromancer robe and the set of the forgotten king was it was the best gear he could give her when considering her limitations.
The set had the combined effect of preventing the player's information from being read while worn together. A popular set for all heteromorphic players who needed to enter towns without getting attacked by the guards, not that it stopped other players from waiting for them outside of town. Still, it was wearable by any level or race, as it worked both ways. He hadn't found a thinker to test it with, but he hoped it helped in that regard, either way, it hid her appearance well.
Each item also had its own perks, like the mask increased defense, the gloves increased attack power, and the shoes increased speed and endurance. Alongside the defensive stats of the robe, he knew it would block low-caliber bullets, something a merchant had been kind enough to provide and then test.
Eventually, he was proven right as Taylor came down, mumbling about how evil she looked' he had to tell her he couldn't change that.
"Then what about changing the costume, I really don't want to debut as the scariest hero. Pretty sure I'll be attacked as a villain looking like this" she question Ainz.
She wasn't sure why, but Ainz started to act embarrassed about it. "I'm sorry but as a necromancer, all my level-appropriate gear is similar to this. I had no input in the design", he looked away coughing "anyways" he said, "you will need to demonstrate your heroics with your actions, not your outfit".She wasn't buying it but he figured it was time for a distraction.
"Here take these," he said as he pulled out ten red potions from his inventory, placing them one by one on the table.
Looking interested, she asked "are those the same things you healed me with"
"Yes, they can heal most damage, I recommend only using a few drops on a cut or light injuries and about half the bottle for something like a lost limb"
Grabbing a bottle and inspecting it, she had to ask " well this is nice, but where am I supposed to carry it in these robes"
Ainz just pointed at the satchel she had.
For her part, she put her incredulity aside and just tried it out. "Shit. Did that just get sucked in" not waiting for a response she tried another one" watching in aww as it disappeared?
"Now just reach in and think of the potion", following his words, she was able to pull out a potion. "It's a satchel for alchemists, it is able to carry 25 potions or small items".
"Ok, that is pretty cool"
Ainz nodded, next he pulled out an old staff he made when he was learning about crafting "the tip of this has negative touch, is able to summon ten low-tier summons every 20 minutes and one mid-tier undead an hour, plus it will allow you to cast a few other spells such as this" walking over to their back yard, he released one magic arrow aimed at a tree. "ohh and don't worry, I'll go over everything in your training, now let us see...hmm. Ah yes, take these scrolls and this as well" handing her a Cerberus statue alongside five rolled-up parchments
"Keep them in the satchel for now, oh and didn't you say something about flying earlier".
"Really"
"Hahaha, Yes can't have you walking around when any proper hero can fly, Right" Reaching into the void, he Pulled out the amulet of Hermes, which gives anyone the spell fly' he passed it over to a grinning Taylor.
"Isn't it looking like a wing just a bit obvious" she jokingly said, when inspecting it.
Ainz just shrugged at this, she wasn't wrong after all. "Well let's go test it out, won't we"
Saying so, he opened a gate to a perfect clearing outside the city.
I'll be slowing down, the next few chapters will be that time skip. Mostly little stories over different days with Taylor's training in some.
Then I need to plan out their first raid after that ill take some time to review source material and make an actual plan for this story.
Reviews
Saif Omar- Thanks, I was for some reason thinking winter break was four weeks which is why I picked the 15th for the first day. I won't be changing it though since it helps me have two fewer weeks to go over.
Guest with ideas- Wish upon a star would work and I like the idea, not sure if ill is able to do it, but ill keep it in mind. In the world, most people's powers didn't change beyond having a second trigger (their power mutates) but shit needs to hit the fan worse than their first trigger for that to happen. Only a few characters have power that changes with time.
JanessaVr- True, Ged is something they can look into later. I did think about mastering, but Ainz's only mastering spells are on undead. Charm, from what it seems would be obvious after it runs out and control amnesia requires too much mana for Ainz to modify someone's memory to act differently.
Paimon777- We can't all be cool
Miner49ner-Hope I went over some of it, sadly those undead are too dumb for the misunderstandings. In canon, Taylor controlled multiple bugs, which is why here she will control multiple cute skeletons and a death knight.
HeroHero21- Aint we all
Etsize -thanks
The-Grave-Walker- missed you last time, Yeah I love Cazador, reading it finally got me curious enough to read worm.
Another story that inspired this one Summoner of death a faz x Ainz crossover. Not to be confused with the overlord of halkegenia, stress reliever when ever reading Louise in a FAZ story gets you irritated.
