Everyone was on the road. They were all in a convenience store.
"Honey can you buy me these Oreos?" Mackenzie asked motioning to the six-pack of Oreos.
"Can't you buy them?"
"I spent the last of my money on tampons."
"If I buy you those I won't be able to afford my beer."
"Please."
"Next time."
"Ok." She said disappointed.
He kissed her. "I love you."
"I love you too."
Sam had heard the whole conversation.
Later that night after the show, Mackenzie was sitting in the back of the van with Sam.
"Wanna split a snack with me?" Sam asked.
"What snack?" He took a six-pack of Oreos out of his pocket. "I love these."
"Me to." He gave her three and kept three for himself.
"I'm gonna buy a surprise cake for Alex's birthday."
"When is it?"
"Tomorrow."
"How old will he be?"
"Twenty-five."
A half hour later Mackenzie had fallen asleep. Sam thought she looked cold. He took off his jacket and covered her up.
The next night everyone had just back to the motel. Mackenzie and Alex were still outside.
"A few of the guys got an Uber." Alex said. "We're gonna go to the bar."
"I wanted to spend your birthday together."
"They surprised me." "I don't want to say no."
"Ok."
"Don't wait up." "We probably won't be back until late." They kissed. "I love you."
"I love you too."
Alex got in the car and it drove away. Mackenzie went into the room and silently cried for a few minutes. She dried her eyes and got the cake where she was hiding.
Mackenzie went to Sam's room and knocked on the door. He answered it.
"Wanna split this cake?" She asked
"What happened to Alex's surprise?"
"He and his friends made other plans."
An hour later Alex was in a bar bathroom with a woman he'd met there. They were getting dressed.
"That was great." He said.
"Happy birthday." She said smiling.
