Since I have a little time, I wrote a short chapter and published it already. However, the next chapter will likely be a while longer.
Chapter 6
(3rd POV)
Harry continued to stare at the magic book. This book gives him so many opportunities, but he's not so naïve as to think it won't resonate with him. He knows that dark magic can corrupt, and while it is the person rather than the magic itself that is good or evil, there is still a danger that such spells could affect him, but Harry admits not so easy on. He may only be 15, almost 16, but he's definitely not your average wizard either.
Knowing that reading the book might be a bad decision, he looked back at Hedwig, hoping for some advice rather than just an insult.
"Hoot hoot hoot, hoot hoot, hoot," said Hedwig, which means something like, "You're an idiot, Harry, but it's your choice and I'll continue to support you."
"Apparently insult and advice at the same time," Harry smirked.
Still unsure, Harry decided to read at least a little, hoping that when it got too much he could stop reading the book.
And so he begins chapter one.
There were some rather "simple" spells in there, ones that would only be frowned upon, if at all, although Harry finds it hard to believe that some of them are possible. Then again, it's magic and the people in his homeland aren't exactly creative or really investigative.
One of the spells is "Ad Augendae" and improves the body in a certain area. For example, trying "Ad Augendae Auribus" would improve hearing. How much varies based on how much magic you put into the spell.
Another spell is "Revelare," which reveals to the caster something that is hidden, like an enemy. At least if it's relatively close, that is, only a few meters, and not several miles, away.
Then there's "Celare," which lets you hide from the sight of others and only those who can cast a spell to reveal you, or sense magic strong enough, can find you.
"Lanuae" is again a spell that can teleport you almost anywhere if you name the place or even a person.
"Reficite", on the other hand, refreshes you, so restores stamina and also regulates your body temperature a bit if you increase your own body heat through exertion.
"Magicae ligula" is basically a kind of radar that can be used to detect magic in a certain area, be it a person, a place, or even a few specific spells.
Then you have, for example, "Clypeus", which creates a kind of shield that you can use to protect yourself, but which you can also use on others.
Of course, with all magic there are certain conditions, or even prerequisites. On the one hand, there would be a magical source that needs to be used in order to be able to do magic at all. With Harry, that would be his magic core. Then the intention must also be defined, i.e. what exactly you want to do. If you want to create a shield, you have to imagine it well and create it very precisely in your mind. Then there is still the will. You have to really want what you want to conjure up. Basically, you have to show as much willpower as is necessary. So in short you need magic, will and also intention.
All in all, these spells are not really of any darker nature, however many British wizards and witches would make an effort for a few. For example, they would frown upon and/or fear the fourth spell because, according to the description given in the book, it cannot be stopped by any wards.
Harry reads through all of the above spells until dinnertime, then takes a little break and reads on shortly thereafter. Harry is genuinely excited about all of the information, but is careful not to get too excited because while all of these spells aren't exactly dark, he still senses darkness from the book, meaning the rest isn't as gentle.
Still, Harry wanted to try one of the spells first. Concentrating his magic, imagining exactly what he wants to do and also making sure he really has the will behind his intention, he then shouts: "Magicae Ligula".
Since Harry was basically collecting as much magic as he could, and also he hadn't cast much magic in a while, the spell was a lot stronger than he thought. He immediately felt a kind of wave erupt from him and stretch far out. And it's looking for something. While this spell effectively allows you to sense all types of magic nearby, you can also focus the spell on something or someone in particular. So if one knew a person's magical aura, one could use this spell to seek it out if he or she wasn't too far away. Harry intended not only to feel magic in general, but this magical source that he had felt intermittently for the past few days.
It lasted a few minutes, but then he felt her. While he still can't really decipher this magic as he just doesn't recognize it, he is able to use the spell to determine that there appear to be six sources of magic, and they are roughly a few kilometers away.
While Harry can't pinpoint the exact location directly, he may be able to use this spell to guide himself to the source. And these sources also feel very different than the four magicians.
They feel bright, calm and good, and also somehow colored? Not sure how to describe it exactly, he doesn't think too much about it at first.
Shortly thereafter, Harry felt that magical wave coming back to him and he didn't really feel the sources anymore.
Although there was much more Harry wanted to find out at that moment, he was very exhausted from this spell and it was also a bit late in the day so he decided to go to sleep and worry about it later .
(The next day)
Harry woke up around 8:00 am already feeling a lot better. His magic has already recovered greatly and he could clearly feel the energy coming back to him while he slept, although he can't exactly say he's at exactly 100%.
Still, Harry got up and was about to begin his usual routine when he remembered what his new employer, Klaus, had said the day before. He was supposed to start work at 9:00 a.m. Harry then hurried and quickly began showering, changing, packing his things and popping into the cafeteria for a takeaway snack while he got ready to rush to the Fruity Smoothie Bar. Of course, Hedwig woke up to all the fuss and was upset, and Harry showed it, but she decided to just take a relaxing flight and leave Harry alone for now so he could get ready for his new job.
Harry hurried to the Fruity Smoothie Bar and ran rather than jogged, however, he didn't do so without paying attention to his surroundings and saw six girls who appear to be slightly older than him ride past him on their bikes and Harry briefly felt something that felt like the night before. Come to think of it, that's six girls, six.
Harry should probably follow them and try to find out more about them, but he already has another commitment and doesn't want to disappoint either Klaus or Roxy, especially since those six sources mentioned felt more good than bad, so Harry didn't feel too bad worried a lot, although he should remember it better for later.
Shortly before 9:00 Harry reached his goal, but since he had to work quite hard and wasn't at full 100%, he had used up a lot of stamina but not his magic, so he tried one of the other spells.
"Reficite," Harry said quietly but forcefully, already feeling a good amount of his stamina returning. Apparently he can be depleted both magically and by stamina, but as long as one isn't heavily depleted, or both fairly low, he can he can at least improve the one with the other quite well.
Harry then made his way to the Fruity Smoothie Bar, which is still fairly empty, but he saw both Klaus and Roxy and greeted them immediately.
"Good morning Roxy, sir," Harry greeted them both.
"Good morning, Harry," Roxy greeted him rather cheerfully.
"Good morning, little one," Klaus said to him with a slight smile.
"I'm on time as promised and ready to start work," Harry said to Klaus.
"Well, pretty determined I see. Feel free to start right away, but you might want to have some breakfast. You're here to work, but you're still young, which means you need your energy," Klaus told him, admittedly seeming a little friendlier than Harry had thought.
"Thank you sir, but I've already had breakfast on my way here and I'm ready to start the day at work," Harry said with a smile of his own.
"Well then get your apron and notepad and clean up some of the tables and serve new customers while Roxy handles the smoothies and snacks for now. I'll go to the back first and take care of some papers," said Klaus and retreated to the back of the bar.
Shortly after he was out of sight, Roxy spoke up, "Glad to see you Harry. It's great that we're really working together now. Even though we technically worked together the day before, it's only now that you really notice it, doesn't it?" Roxy asked.
"Indeed. I'm also glad to work with you. I hope that we will have a lot of success together and that I will do well at the job, said Harry.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine, Harry," Roxy assured him.
"Well then, I guess we should start on the work your father gave us, right?" Harry said to Roxy.
"Sure, we should probably start slowly," Roxy said, getting ready to start work, as did Harry.
So the work began for both teenagers and for the next few hours tables and counters were wiped, glasses and plates cleaned, customers served and a few small conversations held. There isn't much going on at the Fruity Smoothie Bar in the mornings, but Harry and Roxy both did their best anyway. Then around noon it got more crowded and more than half of the place, maybe about two thirds, was filled then. From then on the hard work started and Roxy and Harry had a lot more work to do. But around 1:00 p.m. Klaus reappeared from behind and took over Harry's and Roxy's work first, so that both could take a little break and eat something.
Harry and Roxy then sat down at one of the few free tables with two fruit salads and two smoothies and then began to eat and talk.
"It's nice of your father to give us both a break at the same time," Harry said, beginning the conversation.
"I know, this way we can keep each other company. It's really weird that he would just let us do that," Roxy said, mumbling the last bit so softly that Harry didn't really catch it.
"What was that at the end?" Harry asked her.
"Um, nothing!" Roxy said quickly, blushing a little.
They both then sat quietly together for a while and enjoyed their lunch. However, neither of them knew exactly what to say.
Awkward silence.
After a few minutes, Roxy spoke up, "So, Harry, how about you tell me a little more about your pre-Gardenia days?"
"From my pre-Gardenia days?" Harry asked, thinking about it seriously. Sure, he could lie and tell some stories, but he already valued his friendship with Roxy and didn't just want to make things up about his past.
"Well the first eleven years of my life aren't very interesting, just a normal life although I didn't get along perfectly with my relatives who raised me. After that I went to a private boarding school in Scotland for five years and had a mix of Fun, excitement, trouble and adventure," Harry said, adjusting his voice to sound like a bit of an exaggeration towards the end so he wouldn't have to answer too many questions.
"A boarding school? Aren't they usually dark and uncomfortable schools where all the teachers are nasty and the food is bad," Roxy asked in a teasing voice.
"That actually sounds a lot more accurate than you probably think," Harry murmured to Roxy, who just looked at him questioningly.
"What exactly do you mean?" Roxy asked him.
"Well while I was adventuring with my friends there were at least two apprenticeships every year who didn't like me at all and were always on our trail, the school itself is actually very old and often on the cooler side and students are still closed a good proportion of teenagers and behave accordingly. The food there is fantastic, though," Harry said to Roxy, reminiscing a bit.
"You sound like there're some really interesting stories behind it," said, or rather questioned, Roxy.
"Well, there is certainly a lot more to tell, but that's better left to discuss for another time, as we only have a short lunch break. How about you, how have you been doing so far?" Harry now asked Roxy.
"Well, actually, I'm just an ordinary teenage girl who goes to school, does homework, and occasionally helps out at the Fruity Smoothie Bar. I grew up normally with my father and we live on the outskirts of town in a lovely house with Artoo. The only odd thing, at least for others that I could name, is that I've gotten along really well with animals all my life and can basically befriend each and every one of them. In fact, they seem to be magically attracted to me at times, like that unbelievable that sounds too," Roxy told him, smiling since she mentioned animals.
"Well, you made good friends with Hedwig too, and she almost doesn't like anyone but myself, so that's certainly a bit unusual, but still very impressive," Harry commented, causing Roxy to blush a little at his compliment.
After that, both of them made a little small talk and finished their meal and thus their break shortly afterwards, so that they had to work hard again from 2:00 p.m.
The next couple of hours passed about the same, but then at 6pm the band from the day before started going on stage and started playing. This seemed to go down very well with the clientele as they cheered them on and enjoyed their admittedly good music. Klaus mentioned the day before that it was karaoke night so most likely some customers will go on stage after the band to sing, maybe with the band as accompaniment.
Since many customers were distracted at the time, they didn't place many orders either, so Harry and Roxy had little to do and Klaus was just polishing a few glasses as well.
Shortly thereafter, Roxy came up to Harry and asked him something that frankly made him very nervous.
"Hey Harry, since we're a little busy you might want to dance," Roxy asked him, admittedly blushing a lot.
"Uh, well, uh, I, uh," Harry stuttered, really unprepared for such a question from Roxy.
He doesn't really know what to say, the only other dance he's been to didn't go too well. But he liked Roxy and didn't really want to let such a chance slip away.
"Sure, let's dance a little," Harry said to Roxy, blushed quite a lot and then walked closer to the stage together with her.
After that, Roxy and Harry danced a little together, enjoying the time together and just paying attention to the music and each other. For a short time it was just the two and they basically got lost in each other's eyes. They danced and laughed and just had fun together.
Of course they were both still at work and couldn't take too long off before they had some work to do.
However, at around 8:00 p.m., Klaus told them that once they had done enough work, they could go home. In addition, both of them could take the next day off, because after all, the day after the karaoke evening is usually relaxing.
"Well, I think I'll make my way back to the hotel then," Harry said to Roxy, blushing a little from their previous dance together.
"And I'll be on my way back to the house then," Roxy said, also blushing.
Since the day was long and both are exhausted and a little nervous around each other, the two decided to just head back...
...but first Roxy wanted to do something else.
"Wait a minute, Harry." Roxy said, moving towards him quickly.
"Yes?" Harry asked, turning back towards her, only to be shocked and blushing profusely when she kisses his cheek and then quickly moves away.
"See you later, Harry! I'll text you then!" Roxy said, and was out of sight after just a few seconds.
Harry, however, took a while to mentally reset and then slowly made his way back to the hotel, a little dazed and with a goofy smile on his face.
Back at the hotel he lay on his bed and thought about the day. He was very exhausted from work and Roxy's kiss exhausted and delighted him even more.
Harry actually wanted to read the book a little more, but he decided to go to bed early and start the next day early.
But just as he was about to go to bed, he got a message on his cell phone.
"Hm? The only person who has my number is Roxy. Did she really text me that quickly?" Harry wondered, picking up his phone.
As if he wasn't already exhausted enough from the day and the kiss, Roxy's message caused him to basically have a mental breakdown and wonder what was going on in town.
"Hey Harry, almost forgot to tell you, but I found something interesting on the internet earlier in the day. Apparently a new shop has opened up in Gardenia that sells something called magical fairy stuffed animals. That sounds really cool, don't you think?"
Seriously, shouldn't this be a quiet town. What kind of magic is that supposed to be?! And also one like this in public and on the Internet?! Seriously, come on?!
