Chapter 18-
No one's POV-
It seemed that thousands of black birds swarmed around the sky, their thoughts currently someone's else's. Anyone with eyes could see that they weren't normal but neither Bonnie nor Stefan felt afraid.
When the ravens split off into groups there was a smaller swarm there for each feral vampire. You may be thinking, what could black birds possibly do to vampires. Well, when they're magically enhanced and have directions the answer is… a lot.
The way they attacked the ferals was something straight out of mythology. Some would peck at their necks while others attacked their hearts. They were dead in minutes either from decapitation or had a hole through their chest. But they didn't stop there. The birds would continue pecking at the fallen bodies until there was no sight of the vampires left.
All that happened within a few minutes.
The birds took off after they were done leaving the two teenagers to be confused yet grateful, they weren't the next meal.
A man came out from behind one of the trees looking exhausted with concern in his eyes. Bonnie looked him over with apprehension, not really in the trusting mood after what just happened. Stefan was also cautious of the man who he could tell was a vampire. For as long as he had been alive, he had never been able to trust his own kind like he should.
"Are you ok?" He asked, his British accent out of place in the south.
Stefan narrowed his eyes and stood up with Bonnie, one of her arms over his shoulder so she could stabilize herself.
"Who are you?" Stefan demanded.
The British vampire smirked. "A friend of a friend. She basically forced me to get here faster and help you out."
"The crows? That was you?" Stefan asked skeptically. "No vampire can control that large of a group of animals."
"I had some help." The vampire said vaguely.
"What's your name?" Bonnie asked suddenly. The vampire met her eyes and saw hers ablaze with a fire that showed just how strong she was.
He smirked. Of course the little girl would have friends just like her. He thought fondly to himself.
"Lorenzo St. John."
The vampire sped away leaving the two teens with his name.
They looked at each other, realizing they were very close, just went through some supernatural shit and didn't even know the other's name.
"I hope I didn't scare you." Stefan said to her. Bonnie scoffed.
"You scare me? I think me throwing people around would be the scariest part of the night."
"You wouldn't be the first witch to do that." Bonnie tensed up at his reminder of what she was. She didn't like it but could no longer deny it.
"What are you then? No normal human could survive something like that or move as fast as you did." Bonnie was suspicious but it seemed even more outlandish than her being a witch.
Stefan looked down, his shame coming back all over again. Bonnie felt bad and so decided to not push anymore. At this point she just wanted to get home and sleep for what felt like forever.
"Thank you for helping me. I'm Bonnie by the way."
"Stefan." He said straightening back up and putting a firmer grasp on the witch. "Um… where do you live?"
Bonnie made it home in no time. She had whiplash from how fast Stefan got them to her house. He left her on her porch after making sure she had enough strength to stand on her own. They didn't say another word to each other and parted easily.
A few seconds later Bonnie's Gram rushed out the house with her purse and keys. She only paused when she saw her granddaughter sitting on the steps looking exhausted.
"Bonnie, why do you feel so drained?" She asked after sensing something wasn't right.
Bonnie quickly came up with a lie. "I tried to do some magic but found it hard to do without actual spells and ended up using too much magic." Sheila nodded. It was plausible since she had done the same thing when she was Bonnie's age.
"So Grams, where are you running off to?"
"Maverick's awake."
Bonnie felt her heart speed up to the point it would burst. "W-what?" She choked. Tears were already beginning to form in her eyes. She wanted it to be true but also wanted it to be a good lie.
Sheila put her arms around Bonnie and gave her the comfort she needed in that moment. Bonnie sobbed into her shoulder, each tear a combination of joy and sorrow. These weeks of pain were not easy but now they are over.
Finally, they would be whole again.
Caroline's POV-
My mother being the sheriff got one of the first calls about Maverick when she woke up. I hopped into my car in just pajama pants, a t-shirt and boots. I'm pretty sure I was way over the speed limit and probably did a bunch of illegal driving trying to be the first to see her. I didn't care. These past few weeks have felt like I was dying. I couldn't function, I couldn't even be insecure. All I wanted was for one of my best friends to be ok and alive and speaking.
I probably wasn't the prettiest sight when I came to the hospital. I have been here a lot these days. Most of the staff knew my face and didn't question who I was except for one. I think she's new because she keeps going on about proper procedure and blocking my way. I was so fed up.
"Move!" I screamed at her. She jumped back out of my way, and I walked past her. I was in front of Maverick's door when I got so scared.
Please… please don't let this be a lie.
I took a deep breath and slid the door open. And there she was.
She was sitting up a little out of it but cognitive. She looked pale and her lips were chapped but her eyes were alive. They were clear and beautiful and when she turned them onto me they scrunched at the ends following her smile.
"Hey Care Bear." Her voice was tired but still warm.
I walked fast to her side and enveloped her in a hug that I hoped conveyed how much I had missed her.
I pulled back just as quickly to say "Don't ever scare me like that again." then pulled her back in. She chuckled underneath me but didn't say anything else.
"I promise."
No one's POV-
Maverick's room quickly filled up with people, all of them crying. Liz, Petra and surprisingly Kelly were all happy to see her alive and well. They hung in more of the background when all of her friends got there and surrounded her like bodyguards. Petra had woken up Windy and brought her without Jorrie's knowledge and she was currently curled in the same bed next to her sister holding her as tight as she could. Caroline was on the other side of Maverick not letting up at all.
Tyler, Matt and Vicki were very quiet gathering their emotions. It wasn't usual for those three to be so silent, but Maverick understood. When they hugged her, she held onto them the longest and apologized. She apologized to Tyler and Vicki for not being there when they might have needed her and to Mat for worrying him so much. They each brushed off her apologies saying they were just happy to have her back.
Bonnie and Sheila were next. Against regulation Bonnie was curling up near Maverick's legs with her head on her thigh. Maverick stroked Bonnie's hair comfortingly. They didn't need words said right now but knew they had a lot to talk about. For now, they just enjoyed each other's company. Sheila had given Maverick a kiss on her head and said she was happy to not have to lose one of her granddaughters. Maverick nodded; afraid she'd started crying if she opened her mouth.
She had never known her own grandmother and Sheila was the closest she had gotten to one. She understood her, helped her and even welcomed her presence in her house. She was that maternal figure Maverick had needed and found in the shape of a powerful witch with strong ideals.
The last one to be there and the most scared of all was Elena who had brung Jeremy who had also missed Maverick. She had always let him hangout with them when he got older and even purposefully included him in outings.
Elena was scared and didn't know how to approach Maverick. She was like a deer caught in headlights. There were heavy tears slipping down her face but she stayed quiet. Elena had lost everything she seemed to know in just a matter of minutes and didn't know how she would be if she were to lose one more person.
Maverick was more understanding than Elena thought she deserved. "I know El Bell. I know." She said to her friend.
Elena didn't know when she moved but she knew she had Maverick in a hug holding onto like she was her anchor. She finally felt ok after a month of grief and sadness and heartbreak, she felt like everything would be alright. Maverick knew that these people around her, in her room who had visited for days on end, were the reason she came, why she would always come back.
And we back again. This chapter was much more fluff the usual, but it was needed. I'm not great with emotions most of the time so I hope I did well.
Next chapter is the start of something great and will span the rest of the summer. Maverick is about to be busy but so am I. I wont be posting again until the weekend so I can catch up on my stuff but I will try and make it worth reading just because of the wait.
R&R if you want and checkout my story Wild-Light. I'm going to be doing some major justice over there.
