The group was in the conference room conferring on the latest information from Paul Cho when Hotch's phone rang. "Hell– Garcia– what– hold on. Hold on." Hotch placed the phone on the table. "Go ahead, Garcia, you're on speaker."
"We have a problem. Reid and Alex are missing."
"What do you mean, missing?" Charles asked.
"I called Reid a few times to get an update, but he didn't answer. So I called the hospital. They aren't there. I told them that an ambulance picked them up, and they said they had no report of that. I checked, and there are no incident reports involving an ambulance. I am starting to majorly freak out over here!"
"It's okay, Garcia; we will look into it from here," Hotch said.
JJ and Morgan got up. "We're on it," Morgan said.
"Us too," Charles and Roman stood up. Charles looked at Hugh. "You better stay here with Paul and finish the update."
"I'm going to go talk with the police I've been working with downstairs. I'm sure they can get us some leads," Rossi said.
Charles buckled himself into the driver's seat of the SUV while Roman climbed in on the passenger side. "So, are you going to fill me in?"
"Fill you in?"
"Yeah, on the other, Paul."
"Oh, we worked with him before. I trust him."
"That's not what I mean."
"Then what do you mean?"
"Since Hugh has been living in London, we have been spending time together, catching up. Never once did he mention having a mate from Korea," Roman said with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, you know, Hugh. Keeps things close to the vest and all."
Roman's face soured. "Pretending to be dead has changed you. You used to be the one to give me all the good gossip."
Charles let out a wry laugh. "I know. Just I know that Hugh has been going through something lately."
"Like what?"
"I'm not sure, exactly. We haven't talked about it, but I can just tell by his mood. I was planning to speak to him when this was all done."
"That's good." Roman looked around out the passenger window. "So, where are we headed?"
"I don't exactly know. This is the major way out, and it's also toward the hospital. I figured we might spot something that gives us a clue as to where we go next."
"Should we assume that these things are connected, or is Alex just having the worst luck in the world?
"Well, on the one hand, if they are connected, I can't see what one has to do with the other. And if they aren't connected, it's the biggest coincidences I've ever witnessed."
"I'm not even sure what we should be looking for. It wouldn't be the smartest thing to hold onto an ambulance if you just kidnapped someone in it."
Charles answered the ringing phone and put it on speaker. "Is that you, Garcia?"
"Yes, I am sending the coordinates to you right now. Someone reported an ambulance sinking in the river."
"Okay, we're on it!" Charles ended the call and then made a sharp turn, following the directions. After a few minutes, they arrived where two police cruisers were parked with their lights flashing. "Any sign of anyone?"
"No, nothing," the officer replied.
"Did you guys find the ambulance?"
"No, the lady over there walking her dog saw it. She called it in."
"Okay, did the FBI fill you in on who we are looking for?"
"Yes, we are currently searching up and down the bank, looking for any sign of them. I also have some other officers tracing their route before going into the water. If they are in the area, we will find them."
Alex sat up on the gurney with her hand pressed to her forehead. "I think I'm going to throw up."
"It's the Narcan," Reid said as he was digging through the cabinets. "You were given a large amount of Dilaudid. That was enough to make you queasy. But the Narcan certainly doesn't help. But, we have a more pressing issue at the moment."
Alex looked down at the paramedic being engulfed by water. "I can see that. So, Let me catch up. Paramedic tried to kill me, and now we are sinking."
"Completely caught up."
"What's the plan?"
"Well, that's another problem. Before we sank, I tried to open the door, but I couldn't. There must be some kind of lock or something. I need to figure out a way to get us out of here."
"Before we drown," Alex nodded.
"Before we drown."
"Okay, I will just need to deal with this killer migraine at another time. What can I do?"
"Nothing," Reid said, defeated. "The only thing I was able to come up with would be to combine some chemicals to cause a chain reaction, but since there is nowhere to go to protect ourselves, that most likely wouldn't work."
Alex slowly got off the gurney into the knee-deep water. "Well, what about something we can use to break it open? An ax or something?"
"I've searched. I am not sure what else there is for us to do."
Charles got an update from the officers and then went over to Roman, who stood staring at the top of the ambulance sticking out of the water while the rest of the vehicle was submerged. "I spoke with the rescue workers and they are getting a crane to pull it out of the water. Blimey. I am not sure if they would even have survived."
Charles looked at Roman and then back to the ambulance. He quickly pulled off his shoes. He removed his shirt and then rushed toward the water.
"Charles, what are you doing?" Roman called out.
Charles dove into the water and swam toward the back door. He pulled on the handle, but it wouldn't budge. He then popped his head out of the water and breathed. He then gave three hard pounds with his fist on the wire meshed window.
Alex and Reid looked at each other as they bobbed in the water-filled ambulance. Reid grabbed a crutch that was on a wall bracket and used it to knock three times on the back door. "We don't have much time!" Reid yelled, hoping whoever was outside would be able to hear.
Roman jumped into the water with a crowbar. The two of them worked to get the door open. After a tireless effort, the door finally cracked open. Charles continued to push and pry to open the door completely. Suddenly the dead paramedic's body sloshed out from the ambulance directly at Charles and Roman.
Charles quickly looked at the man's face and then turned back inside the vehicle. Reid and Alex's heads popped up out from under the water with a small oxygen tank between them and a makeshift mouthpiece.
"Alex needs medical attention," Reid said. "Someone real this time."
Emergency workers pulled everyone out from the water. Alex sat inside an ambulance with a blanket around her while Charles was sitting on a bench putting his shoes back on. He glanced up as something caught his eye. He focused until he saw it again. The shimmer from the reflection stripe on a jacket. He wasn't able to see the man's face. He wore a ballcap and had it pulled down, but he was peeking behind a tree in the shadows.
Charles got up and started walking toward the man. He turned and put his hands in his jacket pockets, and walked away. Charles started to run when he saw the unmistakable paramedic logo on the jacket.
