The next morning Mackenzie woke up. She looked over and saw Sam asleep sitting in a chair with his head on a pillow on the edge of the bed. She smiled.

"Sam, wake up." She said softly.

He lifted his head up. "Morning."

"Morning."

"How are you feeling?"

"I wanna go home."

"I'll go see if I can find something out."

"Ok." He left.

Sam came back ten minutes later.

"The doctor just needs to come check on you one last time, then they'll discharge you." "I talked to Tony I'm gonna take the month off and take care of you."

"You don't have to do that."

"You need someone to help you with cooking, cleaning, bathing."

"Bathing?"

"You're supposed to move as little as possible."

"I can hire a private nurse for that stuff." "I don't want you to miss work because of us."

"I want to take care of you guys."

"Ok."

They'd just walked through the front door of the house. Mackenzie went upstairs, changed into her pajamas and got in bed. Sam appeared in the doorway.

"Do you want some lunch?" He asked.

"Can I have a turkey sandwich and a glass of chocolate milk?"

"Yes."

Later that night Mackenzie was getting restless.

"Sam?" She called.

"Yeah." He said coming into the room.

"I'm bored." "Wanna play cards?"

"Yeah." "Where are they?"

"On top of the fridge."

They played two games. Mackenzie won both.

"Wanna play another one?" He asked.

"What did you want to talk about when you asked me to dinner?"

"It's not important right now."

"Just tell me, it's ok."

"I was going to ask you to just think about getting back together."

"I'm sorry I reacted the way I did the night you told me you loved me." "It just surprised me, that's all." "I can't do it." "I don't want to hurt you but I can't do it." "I'm afraid our happiness together would only be temporary." "I still want to be friends."

Sam wanted to press the issue but knew it could be hazardous to Mackenzie and the baby. "Ok."

She could tell he was disappointed. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah." He stood up. "I'm gonna go back downstairs."

"Ok." He left. Mackenzie felt bad. She knew she'd hurt his feelings.
