Three more weeks had passed with no change in Mackenzie but Riley Ann was getting better. Sam had just came back to the hospital after getting a shower. He went into the nursery with a plastic bag in his hand.
"Daddy has a surprise for you Riley Ann." Sam said. "I brought new stories to read to you."
A half hour later the doctor came in and did routine checks on Riley Ann. She went over to Sam went she was done.
"I have good news Mr. Ratsch." She said. "If Riley Ann's vitals stay this way after a month, you can take her home."
"That's wonderful." He said happily.
Sam usually slept in Mackenzie's hospital room but that night he'd fallen asleep in the nursery. It was around eleven o' clock at night. Mackenzie slowly opened her eyes. She was confused. She looked down and saw she was no longer pregnant.
"No!" She shouted starting to cry. "No!" "Not my baby, not again!"
The doctor came rushing in. "It's ok Mackenzie, you're in the hospital, you're fine."
"What happened to my baby?"
"You gave birth to her via C-Section."
"Birth?" "It's way to early for that." "Where's my phone?" "I need to call Sam."
"I'll go get him."
The doctor went into the nursery.
"Mr. Ratsch." She said. He opened his eyes. "Mackenzie is awake and asking for you."
Sam got up quickly and he and the doctor returned to the room. Sam hugged Mackenzie.
"Is she ok?" Mackenzie asked.
"She's ok." Sam said. "She's been in the NICU for almost four months but she's been improving." "The doctor said if her vitals are the same next month, we can take her home."
"Almost four months?" She said confused. "How is that possible?"
"You were bleeding when you were brought in." "The blood loss caused you to go into a coma."
"I want to go see her."
"First thing in the morning." The doctor said.
"Please." "I need to see my baby."
"You haven't stood up in three and a half months." "You don't have the strength right now and will be very weak for a period of time." "I promise in the morning we'll get you a wheelchair and you can go see her."
At seven the next morning Sam picked Mackenzie up from her hospital bed and put her in a wheelchair. They'd told Mackenzie she could hold Riley Ann. Mackenzie and Sam had just went into the nursery.
"Riley Ann." Sam said. "Mommy's here, look."
The nurse took Riley Ann from the incubator and gave to Mackenzie. Sam knelt down beside them. Mackenzie heart filled with joy.
"Sam, look at her." She said beginning to cry tears of joy.
"I know." Riley Ann opened her eyes.
Mackenzie smiled. "You have daddy's eyes." "I promise never to be away from you like that again." She kissed her cheek. "I love you so much."
Seeing Mackenzie so happy made Sam so happy. He only wished things were different between him and Mackenzie, so they could be a family. If things were different he would've proposed right at that moment.
