Ch 10 Hero's Fury
Link entered the market ruins, seeing the dilapidated ruins of the stores he loved, the bombchu bowling alley caved in, even the Happy Mask Shop was in a pile of rubble. Link walked past countless bodies, some of which he had recognized, he even walked past the beggar, he never found out what C was, and now he never will. He then approached the destroyed drawbridge, which already had a couple dozen guards in the middle of repairs, and saw Claire, hovering at the exit of the once Castle Town.
"Find out where she is?" Claire asked, giving a slight scowl
"Yeah, over in Gerudo Desert, uncharted territory,"
"And how much did that cost?" She asked, slightly raising her voice
"Me? Nothing, that guy though, it cost him his life." Link let out a sly smirk
"For goddesses sake Link! Will you take this seriously?" The fair screamed
Link then glared at the green fairy, "I am, that's why I know where she is. What were you doing 'Oh great guardian fairy'?" Link then charged past Claire, straight for the desert. As he crossed the moat, he pulled out his ocarina and played Epona's Song, to which had the stallion galloping up to his side in mere minutes. "Hey there girl, its been awhile," Link petted the horse along the snout, feeding her a carrot. "Alright girl, we're heading to the desert, and we need to get there fast. Are you ready?"
The horse then let out a snort, as if confirming the question. Claire then floated up to Link's shoulder, and let out a sigh, "Fine, I might not agree with your methods, but we need to save Saria. I'll help in anyway I can,"
"Glad you came to your senses. Now let's go save Saria," Link then climbed onto the horse's saddle, and gave a kick. Starting their race towards the desert. Epona galloped at lightning speed, crossing the field in record time. Passing Lon Lon Ranch, and soon entering the barren landscape that led to Gerudo Desert. As they crossed the bridge over the valley, they entered the Gerudo Training Grounds, which was as far as Epona could take them. Link then dismounted, "Good girl, you did well," Link then fed her another carrot, and patted her on the back, sending her back home to Lon Lon Ranch.
"Ahhh Link! I see you've grown into quite the handsome man!" A voice came from behind Link, as he turned around he saw none other than Nabooru, the leader of the Gerudo, and the Sage of Spirit.
"Oh, hey Nabooru, how's it goin?" Link replied half heartedly, not wanting to deal with the distraction.
"Geez, don't sound so disappointed," Nabooru then patted Link, giving a full faced grin.
"Sorry, I'm happy to see you, just a lot is going on," Link then informed Nabooru of the attack on Castle Town, the deaths of Impa and King Faaram, and of Saria's capture.
"WHAT? And that slimy bastard is hiding in MY desert? Oh if I find him I'm gonna-" She then cut herself off, and cleared her throat as if to sound more like the leader she is, since she was the Sage of Spirit she took the reins after Ganondorf's banishment. "I mean, we will send aid to Castle Town right away. And you of course have full immunity to go through the desert and your leisure. I however must remain here and inform my people." she then gave Link a little nudge, whispering into his ear, "And of course I expect you to give him a few slashes from me as well." Nabooru then gave Link a sly wink, and walked away. Ordering the Gerudo to meet at the front of the fortress.
Link then gave a slight smile towards the gerudo, and turned towards the desert. The endless sandstorm that hid the way to the Spirit Temple, would be his next major obstacle. There was at least a hidden path to follow to get to the temple, but finding his way to an unknown hideout would be far from easy. He shook his head, removing any negative thoughts he had, and marched forward, towards the desert, towards Saria.
Sand, sand, and more sand. That's all that entered Link's mind as he entered the storm. As he pelted from all sides, having his boots full of sand in mere minutes, Claire spoke to the hylian from under his pointed hat. "Link, I can feel a trace of Saria's presence, over to your right, just a bit."
"Wait, you can track where she is?" Link asked in astonishment
"Of course! I have been her fairy since birth. Navi was one of the best of us, but even she can't do with you what the rest of us can do with our assigned Kokiri." Claire seemed to say that full of pride, almost like she was proving a point to Navi.
'Navi' Link never forgot his fairy. He may have been a bit preoccupied with the Deity's appearance seven years ago, but he still planned on finding his lost companion, after he killed the mad god. Link then processed what Claire had said, she can track Saria! It's a bit primitive, only being able to know when to go slightly right or left, but it was better than nothing. Maybe it wouldn't be as hard as he thought.
. .
Sand, sand, and more sand. As the hours ticked by of seeing nothing but the endless sands of unmapped gerudo desert, and hearing nothing but "Go to your left a bit" or "Back to your right" from the fairy tucked away in his hat, Link could feel what energy he had left being sucked out of him from the endless sandstorm. As he started to stagger between steps, Claire popped out of Link's hat and floated in front of his face, "Come on Link we're almost there!" She then rubbed Link's cheek "Do you have any green potion left?" She then glanced down towards his Kokiri pouch.
Link fell to his knees, as he reached towards his pouch. He then pulled out a bottle, quarter full of green potion. He had been conserving it as he trekked through the desert just in case of a moment like this. As he grimaced at the potion, never liking the taste of any of them, he shot the remnants back, restoring his energy. As he shot back to his feet, Claire tugged at his arm, "Come on Link! I can feel her presence getting stronger by the step! We've got to be close!" This was music to Link's ears. As the two hurried in the direction of Saria, all Link could think about was what could have happened to her since she was kidnapped. He quickly shook the thoughts off, not wanting to imagine any of it.
They ran as fast as the desert would let them, being blasted in the face by sand the entire way, but at long last, Link and Claire arrived at a clearing, with a large sandstone structure in the middle, roughly the size of the entire Goron Village. "There it is" Link exclaimed, clenching his fist, "I'm coming, Saria." Link then started towards the hideout.
"Link wait," Claire worriedly started, "I'm sensing a large number of monsters in there. I don't know if-"
"I can handle it," Link shifted his gaze at the fairy, "You just stay out of sight and try to find Saria." He then took back off towards the structure, not awaiting a response.
"If you say so," the fairy sighed to herself, as she fluttered towards a small crack in the building.
Link approached the door leading inside, and opened it slowly. Seeing the coast was clear, he snuck in. Slowly sneaking his way through the entrance, he spotted a guard, a Lizalfos. Link had encountered these lizardmen a few times in his past adventures, and he was sick of them. As he snuck behind the lizard, he grappled him and held his Biggoron's Sword to the guard's throat. "Saria, the kokiri, where is she?" he growled at the lizalfos.
"Ahaha! Stupid human, you can't possibly reach her! The great Lord Xanta-"
Link slit the lizard's throat, silencing him, "I didn't ask" he snarled, wiping the blood off his blade. He then searched the body of the lizalfos, finding a key. "If I know my dungeons, and I'm pretty sure I do by now, then this key should go to" Link then looked around the room and pointed, "that door!"
He shot up and hastily walked to the door, unlocking it and walking through. But what he saw on the other side was nothing he could have expected. The room was large, almost in the shape of an arena. This room clearly took up the entire space of this floor, based on the room size and what Link saw before he entered. As Link took a few steps forward, torches lit up around the room, and the door he came in barred itself off. "Oh great, time for a fight," Link sighed to himself.
As Link was preparing for whatever fight laid ahead, he heard a voice, Saria! "Link?" She spoke telepathically, "What happened? Where am I?"
"Don't worry, I'll explain soon. I'm close."
"Wait, I hear someone, they're coming in!" She then cut off
Silence, no matter how long Link waited, no more words came from Saria. Thinking of all the worst-case scenarios, Link shifted his gaze towards the ground, clenched his fists, and marched towards the other side of the arena, where the next door lay. As he reached the center, a horde of lizalfos appeared out of nowhere, with their chieftain appearing right in front of the hylian. The large lizalfos attempted to mock the boy, but Link completely drowned him out, only imagining Saria's cries if something was happening to her. He let out a fiery glare at the lizard, pulled out a biggoron's sword, and spun around him, slicing his head clean off.
This of course led the rest of the lizalfos to jump into the arena, all coming straight at Link. How many were there? Link tried to quickly count, ten? Thirty? No, one hundred lizalfos, all coming after Link. He then reached his right hand to his back, grabbing a second biggoron's sword, "GET OUT OF MY WAY!" Link cried. His blades then started to glow a forest green, as he began slicing through the horde of oncoming monsters. As he slashed his way through the thick scales of each lizalfos, Link's blades moved as quick as light, his training with Impa really paid off.
Dozens of Lizalfos had fallen to Link's forest powered blades, but something was wrong. The swords were not cutting through as easily. Link noticed this, but he couldn't care less. He was driven by pure rage. 'These damned lizards, they're in my way' was all Link thought. As his blades glowed brighter and brighter. Until eventually, they glowed a bright white, and shattered. Link, not even hesitating, shoved the broken hilts of the blades straight into the nearest lizalfos necks, and readied his hands in the shape of an X. "Farore's slash!" Link shot out a pair of wind blades towards the remaining lizalfos, leaving only ten left. These last ten however, circled around him, and jumped at him simultaneously from all directions. Link only reacted with a smirk. He raised his open hand up to his chest, palm facing the sky, and clenched his hand, "Saria's grasp!" All the lizalfos were stopped in their tracks, midair. "Feel the wrath of the forest sage!" He squeezed his hand, as the lizalfos all squashed into themselves, leaving nothing but a pool of blood. Link let out a small chuckle, before starting towards the door across the room. As he reached the door, and opened it, Claire came fluttering up to him, "Claire? How'd you get over there?" Link questioned.
"Don't worry about that now, I found Saria! She's on the floor above us!" Claire rushed ahead, with Link in tow, as he did not question the fairy any further, he simply went towards Saria.
As the two reached the staircase, and circled up towards the next floor, Link started to get a very bad feeling, like something terrible was looming overhead, but he shook it off, as he reached the top of the stairs. As he opened the next door, he saw an expansive hallway, with cells dotted on each side. Claire then darted ahead, "This way" she beckoned to the hylian, who was following close behind.
Link was ecstatic that he was going to finally get Saria back, however, when he looked into the cell Claire had stopped in front of, his heart stopped. Saria was laying against the cell wall, covered in dirt from head to toe and bleeding from cuts all over her arms and legs.
As she heard Link come up to the door, Saria shot her head up, "Link! Thank the goddesses you made it, Claire told me you were here too." She then began to smile ear to ear, ignoring the shape she was in.
As Link kicked through the cell door, Claire began to explain, "Yeah, when I went through that crack in the outer wall, I actually ended up in a cell on the other side of the hall. So I of course explored, found Saria, and came towards the sounds of fighting. That seems to be where you normally are." Claire shrugged towards Link, who simply rolled his eyes.
"Yeah yeah, the guy with the sword gets into fights, very original." Link mocked the fair, he then knelt next to Saria, pulling out a blue potion that he was saving for her, just in case. "Here, drink this. It will help," he then raised the bottle to her lips, as she began to choke the fluid down, letting out a cough after it was gone.
"That was vile!" Saria screeched, "It's blue! It's supposed to taste good!" Saria began to pout, clearly feeling a lot better after the potion.
Saria's pouting was quickly interrupted, as Link pulled her in, and hugged her tightly, "I thought I lost you," he whispered, his voice shaking.
Saria returned the embrace, "It's alright Link, I'm okay, you saved me."
Hearing those words, sent Link straight to the memories of the old future. Where he hadn't made it in time to save Saria. Where she was killed by Phantom Ganon, and awakened as the sage. He had failed her then, but he'd be damned if he'd fail her again.
Link then stood up, and looked back at Claire, "And what about Xantam? Did you find him?"
"No, but I did find the next staircase up to the top floor. He may be up there," Claire responded, seeing the rage in Link's eyes.
Saria then stood up, walking up next to Link, putting her arm on his shoulder, "Well then, what are we waiting for?" She then pulled on Link's arm, "Hey Link, where are your swords?"
"Hmm? Oh yeah," Link started to rub the back of his neck, "I kinda broke them,"
"How did you break them?! Biggoron made them unbreakable!" Saria questioned, bewildered by the news.
"Well clearly they aren't as unbreakable as he claims," Link slyly remarked, resulting in an elbow to the side from Saria.
"Joke all you want, but how do you plan on fighting Xantam without a sword? Do you have your gilded sword still?" Saria questioned, staring wide eyed at Link.
"N-no, I left it back at the castle…..it's too small for me now." Saria began to glare at Link, but he quickly continued, "But don't worry! I have the perfect plan to fight him."
"Please, enlighten us," Saria crossed her arms, as Claire rested on her shoulder and did the same.
"It's a surprise, you'll see," Link then rushed on ahead, now wanting to be questioned further, "Come on then, the sorcerer isn't gonna kill himself… although that would be nice." Link chuckled to himself, as he opened the door to the staircase.
Saria and Claire then glanced at each other, and in unison said "Yeah, right," before marching up behind Link.
As the trio continued up the stairs, Link broke the silence, "You know, as much as I hate the guy, at least he made his temple easy to get around. Simply go to the other end of the room to go higher. No unnecessary keys, no blocks to push, nothing. Nice and simple. You see, back in the Water Temple-,"
Claire then interrupted, "Yes yes, the Water Temple. You had to raise and lower the water multiple times, hookshot up platforms, and fight giant hopping spiders. You've told us enough times I could tell You the story." the fairy then smirked at herself.
Saria however quickly flicked the fairy, "And we're very grateful for your sacrifice," she then cocked her head and smiled at Link, "She is right though, you do bring it up a lot,"
"Well, it was that bad," Link groaned to himself, as they reached the top of the stairs. The trio however stopped at the door, as Link reached for the handle, "All right, let's finish this," he then smashed through the door and readied a fire spell, aiming it into the room at…..nothing. "Where is he?" Link asked aloud, as he searched around the singular room, with nothing but bookshelves, a desk with a chair, ink, and quill, and a small sleeping area in the corner.
Saria then entered the room, and walked over to the desk, investigating the papers scattered around on top of it. As she peered through the headings of the papers, one struck her eye, "Hey Link, come look at this," she called over.
Link quickly came to Saria's side and read the title aloud, "Person's of interest? What about it?"
"Keep reading," Saria demanded.
Link did as he was told, now understanding why, as he observed the parchment:
Darunia, Goron Chief: Threat level low
Race: Goron
Currently residing in Goron City, Death Mountain

Nabooru, Gerudo Leader: Threat level low

Link was unnerved by the notes of all the people he knew, but not as much as he was when he reached the bottom.
Impa, Last of the Sheikah: Threat level medium
Race: Sheikah
Deceased
Shadow Sage
Princess Zelda Hyrule, Threat level medium

Link pounded his fist into the desk, dropping a book onto the floor. Saria then walked over and picked up the book, "Hey how do you think I feel? He doesn't think I'm a threat!" She then quickly looked through the pages, landing on something she thought was interesting, "Hey look at this," She handed Link the book, beckoning him to read it aloud.
Link cleared his throat and began,
Entry One: I found him! I found God! He seems rather angry about something, or someone. I'll keep my distance for now, until I find out more.
Entry Two: After hearing him muttering to himself, it seems he's furious at someone called Majora. Something about sealing himself in a mask for eternal life. It sounds rather far fetched but God could never be mistaken. I must find out more.
Entry Three: He mentioned something peculiar today, about another world very similar to ours, and that even everyone here in this world has a different version over in that world, looking identical, but with a separate personality. Most intriguing.
Entry Four: I have seen God's true face! Although I thought his previous face was his true face, I was wrong! Seeing him this way almost makes him seem like a normal man, but I know better.
Entry Five: God has met with a very strange man today, red hair, closed eyes, and constantly smiling. He was carrying a large backpack of masks which was disturbing, but he is of no threat.
Entry Six: God has been imprisoned within a mask! That man, that Mask Salesman locked him away! But before he could grab the mask of god, he threw his mask of a body into the sky! Where he will land I am uncertain, but at least that salesman will not get him.
Entry Seven: I know now what I must do, I must go to this other land, this 'Hyrule' and find God's counterpart. Friend or foe is uncertain, but I will know once I see them.
Entry Eight: I found him! After months of searching I found him by chance! He was wandering about Castle Town after that one Gerudo's trial. What was his name? Ganondorf? Something like that. But I know now that this boy cannot be trusted, after all he-
The page was torn after that, which led Link to sigh, "Man just as it was getting good!" He then put his finger to his lips in thought, thinking aloud, "Although it does show that Xantam is in fact a Terminarian. And that the Fierce Deity has a counterpart here as well, although who he is remains unknown."
"We can worry about that later," Saria leaned on a bookshelf, causing it to cave in.
"Geez Saria, maybe cut back on the meat would ya?" Claire mocked.
"Oh quiet you!" Saria shouted, but as the shelf caved in, she could hear clicking behind the wall, which eventually led to the ceiling, and caused a ladder to drop, and a hatch to open. "Hey look, a secret room," She noted.
"Nice!" Link shouted, rushing towards the ladder.
"Wait! What if it's a trap?" Clair asked
"That's why I'm going first," Link smugly replied. As he reached the top of the ladder, he saw it, in fact, lead to the roof, which was completely flat and had nothing atop it, other than a single bronze pole with an orange gem atop it.
Saria came up behind Link and saw the pole, "What is that? It certainly has a lot of magic in it." Saria pointed out.
"Whatever it is, it's not good," Link replied.
"Clearly it's important if it's up here by itself," Claire chimed.
Link then walked up to the pole, "Is that so?" he asked, before sending his foot straight into the middle of the pole, breaking it in two. This caused the gem to start glowing and crackling.
"Why did you do that you fool?" Claire screeched, "Who knows what that can cause!"
"So Xantam can't have it obviously!" Link replied, as the gem shot a white beam of light into the sky. The trio stared at the beam, as it spread into the sky, and formed a large dome over the desert. But as it dissipated all of their jaws dropped. The sandstorm that always buffeted the desert was gone. No trace of it was left.
"So what? The sandstorm was protecting Xantam's hideout? Not the Spirit Temple?" Saria questioned aloud.
"I have no idea," Link replied awestruck, he noticed that from where he was, and with the storm gone, he could see most of Hyrule. The castle, Death Mountain, even Kokiri Forest…..but. Link's heart then sank.
"L-link…" Saria broke off, but Link knew what Saria had just saw, because he was staring at the same exact thing. Kokiri Forest, their home, was on fire.
Author's Note: Sorry about the wait! Writer's block hit me like a truck, but I am pushing through! Also, for any of you who may be worried that this story will not be finished have no fear, I have every intention to finish it even if no one reads it. But other than that, I would love to hear thoughts from all of you so be sure to review. :)
