After sleeping for a night in a hotel, which Kai thought was way too expensive for the quality of their two bed room, May and Kai went on their way to the Oreburgh Gym. May wore the same outfit she wore yesterday. Kai wore his usual outfit of a short sleeve black shirt, dark blue vest, and black joggers. While Kai, May, and Lucario were walking and chatting along the way, Kai received a text. Hearing his ringer go off, he pulled out his phone from his pocket and stared at the screen.
"Hey Kai, its been a while. Hope we see each other again! I would LOVE to get to know you…" Kai read silently as May peered over his shoulder to see who had texted him.
"Hey who's that Kai?" May asked Kai with a very small tinge of jealousy in her voice.
"Yeah Kai, who is that?" Lucario snickered at Kai, knowing how this looked for him. Kai glared at Lucario before responding to May.
"She's just a girl I met up on the cruise ship to Sinnoh. We've just spoken once. Her names Sarah." Kai said to May while writing a response back to Sarah.
"Oh… So you are single?" May asked Kai, who just nodded in response while still writing back Sarah.
"Cool." May said with a small smile on her face
After walking for a few more minutes, the trio reach the Oreburgh Gym. Before entering, Kai turned to Lucario.
"Hey Lucario, sorry but I'm just gonna use Gible for this gym badge since I know your just gonna smoke this guy Roark in your sleep. Hope you understand buddy." Kai told Lucario who scoffed in return.
"Obviously Master, these Pokemon are nowhere near the skill necessary to even demand my attention." Lucario replied cockily with his head held high.
"And I thought I was the cocky one…" Kai told May as she just shrugged and laughed.
The group entered the gym and got their first view of the gym. It wasn't massive but the roof was definitely high up there, with large boulders and rocky hills being present in the battle field. A young man who looked to be in his 20's approached the group. He was wearing a construction worker's outfit with a red helmet on top of his head, almost completely covering his red hair.
"Welcome to Oreburgh City Gym, my names Roark and I'm the gym leader here." Roark stated while taking off his helmet to hold. "Are you both here to challenge this gym?" he asked May and Kai
May shook her head. "Just him." May said smiling, pointing at Kai. Kai smirked, confident in his ability to win and readying himself. He felt good, even at the disadvantage of one Pokemon vs two.
"Perfect, you can watch from the stands young lady. Follow me, I'll take us to the challenger field." Roark stated before walking towards the field. May hugged Kai, wishing him good luck before rushing off to the stands.
"I'm sensing that May has a crush on you Master." Lucario told Kai seriously. Kai shocked his head, brushing it off
"Relax Lucario, it's just a hug." Kai responded before following Roark. The two parties got situated on the battle field before a referee emerged. The referee stood at the middle of the field and raised his flag.
"This battle is between the challenger, Kai Ledger from Pallet Town, versus Roark, Oreburgh City Gym Leader. Are both parties ready to battle?" The referee asked. Roark nodded while Kai put a thumbs up, signaling that both parties were good to go.
"Let the battle begin!"
"Go onix!" Roark threw his pokeball which shined bright to eventually reveal his Onix, roaring to intimidate the opponent. Kai smirked, throwing out his pokeball.
Gible emerged, jumping up excitedly, ready for his first professional battle. Kai and Gible had the chance to train for a bit before the battle, but nothing extreme. Kai knew that Gible was naturally a strong Pokemon and he shouldn't need to prepare too much for the first gym leader of a region. As long as Roark doesn't send out any advanced Pokemon.
"Alright Onix, use rock tomb!" Roark ordered as Onix create several boulders before launching them towards Gible. Gible remained calm, waiting for Kai's order.
"Gible, use dig and cover up the entrance by using mud shot." Kai ordered. Quickly, Gible dug a hole and jumped into it. Gible then used mud shot to cover up the entrance, preventing any boulders or attacks from entering the burrow he was in.
"Smart, he used mud shot to stop me from forcing Gible out of the hole. I can't mess around with this guy." Roark thought to himself, waiting in anticipation for Gible to emerge from underground
"Now use bite Gible and hold onto Onix!" Kai said as Gible bursted through the ground, flying above Onix before biting on the top of it's head. Onix roared in pain and began to panic.
"Throw him off you Onix!" Roark ordered. Onix lashed around but it was no use. Gible kept his grip despite Onix throwing himself around the battlefield.
"Now Gible, use Dragon Breath while still attached!"
Gible unleashed a powerful blue and purple stream that hit Onix at such a close range. Due to this proximity, his attack did major damage to Onix.
May watched the battle in amazement. She couldn't believe how Gible was performing even though Kai had just received him. Clearly, Kai was an extremely talented trainer who was also able to think of unique and effective strategies.
"Nice Kai, you got this!" May cheered in the stands, pumping her firsts up. Kai saw this and laughed at her antics while Gible cried out in excitement due to the battle and his performance so far.
"Are you alright Onix? Could you continue to battle?" Roark asked Onix, who struggled to get back up. Onix was littered with bruises but still nodded his head, willing to continue battling.
"Alright then Onix, use take down!"
"Use sand attack and then dragon breath while he's blinded."
Onix charged towards Gible with an impressive quickness that many large Pokemon didn't have. Onix was a few feet away before Gible used sand attack, pushing sand into Onix's face and temporarily blinding him. Onix once again cried out in pain, closing his eyes due to the sand irritating them. When he was finally able to open them again, Onix didn't have time to dodge the dragon breath that Gible has used, creating an explosion of smoke. After a moment, the smoke cleared to reveal an untouched Gible. On the floor was Onix, knocked out.
"Onix is unable to battle. Please send out your next and final Pokemon." The referee ordered Roark.
"I underestimated him. That won't happen again. Looks like I'll have to use my Ace Pokemon in order to have a shot at this." Roark thought before picking up his next pokeball.
"That was impressive Kai. You dealt with my Onix with absolute ease and skill. But my next Pokemon won't go down without a fight!" Roark said passionately as he sent out his final Pokemon
"Oh you've got to be kidding me…" Kai muttered as Roark's Rampardos landed on the field. "Gible is a young Pokemon who i just received and on top of this, Rampardos is Roark's best Pokemon. Roark probably thought I have a second Pokemon besides Gible. I mean, what idiot brings one Pokemon to battle." Kai thought to himself before shaking off his thoughts.
"Alright Gible you can do this! Use sand tomb!"
"Rampardos, use dig to escape the sand!"
"Shit"
Rampardos disappeared from the battle field, leaving Gible on the surface, unsure of where he was.
"Gible, use dragon breath into the hole Rampardos came from!"
Gible attempted to locate the hole, but due to the sand tomb Gible used, the scattering sand made it extremely difficult to see. Kai cursed at making such a mistake and made a mental note to look back at this moment to improve. After a few seconds, Gible was sent up in the air due to Rampardos using dig. Gible cried out in pain and landed hard on the ground. Rampardos kicked sand like a bull, ready for his next move.
"Rampardos, use Head Crash!"
"Use Dragon Breath towards the ground in front of Rampardos!"
Roark appeared confused at the order but shrugged it off. Rampardos sprinted towards Gible with his head down, ready to crash into Gible. Rampardos was stopped however, as the ground exploded in front of him and pieces of stone and rubble blew up and into Rampardos. Ramparts cried out in pain, kneeling and recovering from the debris hitting him.
"Now Gible! Use Takedown!" Kai ordered Gible, who charged at Rampardos with a rapid pace. Before Rampardos had the chance to recover, he was pushed several feet back by Gible's takedown attack. While that did quite a bit of damage, Rampardos was still standing. Due to takedown, Gible took recoil from the attack, hurting him even more.
"Damn, Gible is in bad shape. He won't last much longer so I'm going to have to put Rampardos away now." Kai thought as he analyzed Gible.
"Gible use Bite but listen to my next order!"
"Rampardos, stay where you are." Roark ordered to Rampardos, who set his feet in place.
Gible sprinted towards Rampardos with his mouth open and teeth showing. Gible was twelve feet away before Roark sent out another order.
"Use Zen Headbutt Rampardos!"
"Perfect, just what I needed." Kai thought to himself. Kai knew that Rampardos was reliant on physical attacks rather than specials moves due to his size and body build. Rampardos was an extremely physical Pokemon. Because of this, Kai hoped that Rampardos would use a physical move to counter Gible's bite, leaving him open to a special attack.
"Use dragon breath!" Kai ordered as Roark opened his mouth panicked, attempting to tell Rampardos to stop. It was too late, however, as Gible let out a dragon breath which connected with Rampardos at point blank, before he had the chance to reach him. Rampardos slid several feet backwards, laying down on his side. Rampardos was now hurt badly but still attempting to get back up. Kai knew that this was the opening he needed to deliver the final blow.
"Gible, use dig quickly before Rampardos has the chance to recover!" Kai said rushed. Gible immediately burrowed into the ground to attack.
"Get up Rampardos and use Rock slide into the hole!" Roark ordered Rampardos, who was still struggling to get back up.
Just as soon as Rampardos had reached his feet, Gible broke out from underneath the ground in front of Rampardos. Gible's dig then connected right underneath Rampardo's chin. Gible landed behind Rampardos and struggled to remain standing. Rampardos remained standing as if the attack did nothing. The battlefield, Lucario, and May were completely silent as the two Pokemon had a standoff. Suddenly, Rampardos fell backwards slowly, completely knocked out from Gible's dig.
The referee raised his flag towards Kai before declaring, "Rampardos is unable to continue. The winner is Kai Ledger."
Kai immediately ran to Gible and picked him up, throwing him up in the air, praising his performance. May cheered alongside Lucario, who smiled at his trainer and Gible's victory. Roark complimented Rampardo's efforts, before returning him to his pokeball.
"Congratulations Kai, I would live to award you your coal badge." Roark told Kai as he handed him the badge. Kai thanked him for the battle and the two shook hands. May and Lucario came down from the stands, with May running towards Kai.
"That was amazing Kai! Congrats!" May told Kai, hugging him tightly as Kai smiled, reciprocating the hug. Lucario raised his eyebrow in question at the closeness and Kai responded with a playful middle finger behind May's back and towards Lucario.
BOOM
Their moment was interrupted with a loud blast that sounded off outside in the city. The group heard people screaming and immediately rushed outside to discover what was occurring. When they arrived, people were sprinting in the same direction, screaming and panicking. In the distance were two trucks filled with Chaos soldiers in the back. In between the trucks stood a tank that was fit with a battering ram at the end of it.
"May stay here, Lucario and I will check it out ok. Everything's fine." Kai lied to May as May shot him a disapproving look
"Kai clearly everything is not fine! I'm goi-" May was interrupted as Lucario trapped here in an aura shield, preventing anything or anyone from entering or scaping the entrapped space. May banged the walls of the aura shield in protest, but her complaints fell to deaf ears as Kai and Lucario apologized to her and walked away towards the Chaos soldiers.
"You know she is going to be livid at you when this is all over with." Lucario asked Kai even though it sounded more like a comment than question. Kai groaned before looking at Lucario.
"Don't remind me. Did you see how mad she got in those ten seconds?" Kai shivered at the thought of an extremely angry May.
The duo kept walking towards the trucks but stopped when they saw the trucks open. About 6 soldiers came out of each truck. One of those soldiers was a large man armed with a long sword. He wore a similar outfit to the other soldiers equipped with black army gear. However, the man stood at about 6'8 and was sleeveless, showing off his extremely muscular build. The other eleven soldiers stood behind the unnecessarily tall leader, facing Kai and Lucario.
"God my poor ribs." Kai whispered.
