A\N: This weekend was a long weekend so I had yesterday off of work. Today was a Snow Day, that meant I had lots of chances to write and I was able to finish this one-shot. Also please remember Hope is still only seventeen months old so you may not be able to understand what she is saying and somethings are spelled wrong on purpose.
Spoilers: None

Hope's Hospital Visit
It was December 22nd and so far, everything had been going great at Oliver and Shane's Christmas party. Now, at seven thirty they had to try and get Jessica and Hope to bed, Hope was still saying goodnight at the party while Oliver and Shane put Jessica to sleep. She was usually fairly easy to put to sleep but because of an exciting day she was overtired.
"I Go now Ganpa!" Hope tugged on Joe's shirt in order to get his attention. She wanted to be put down on the floor so she could explore, "I no eepy," She shook her head.
Joe looked at his granddaughter, he knew she was tired, but he also knew she was very stubborn. He placed her on the floor and looked down at her. "Do you want Grandpa to put you to bed?"
"No!" Hope grabbed her Pink Blanket and Baby Shark and ran off. She found herself in the kitchen where she saw some cupcakes on the counter. She put Baby Shark and Pink Blanket on the floor and pushed over a chair to the counter. Climbing up she had just gotten into the cupcakes when Rita looked in the kitchen to see what she was doing.
"Hope!" Rita dashed to the counter only to see her fall from the counter barely breathing. "Help! I need Hope's Epi-Pen!" Rita yelled as loud as she could. "Ssh, sweetie," Rita tried her best to soothe her Goddaughter as she herself was crying, "You're going to be okay."
"Rita! What-"Shane froze as she saw her daughter lying unconscious in her best friend's arms, she blinked away tears as she tried to remember what she needed to do, "How-" She began to sob uncontrollably.
While Shane's mother pulled her into her arms for comfort Joe took Hope's Epi-Pen and administered it successfully "Dale's calling 9\11." He helped Rita place Hope on her side, "Do you know what happened?"
"She ate…." Rita couldn't finish talking as she pointed to what was left of the cupcakes.
"I should have thrown those stupid things away!" Shane yelled angrily. "Why isn't she waking up?" Shane looked at the daughter who was still unconscious.
There was a loud knock on the front door and Dale went to open it and then led the paramedics into the kitchen.
"Where are her parents? What happened?" One of the paramedic's asked while the other one started checking Hope's vital signs.
"I'm her mother…she uh….she's allergic to cow's milk and she got into some cupcakes… my father in-law gave her one of her Epi-Pens," Shane tried to keep her voice as steady as she could, she wanted the paramedic's to have all the information they needed to treat Hope.
"When was the Epi-Pen administered?" The paramedic asked.
"About ten minutes ago," Joe answered.
"We need to get her to the hospital. Who's coming with us?" The paramedic treating Hope placed on the child-sized stretcher and looked at the adults, "I know this is hard, but I need a decision quickly."
Kissing Shane's cheek Oliver stepped forward, "I'm her father. I'll go with you."
"Alright we're taking her to the Denver's Children's Hospital," The paramedic said as he rushed out of the room pushing the stretcher.
Once the paramedics were out of the kitchen Shane let out a deep breath and then started sobbing. She couldn't believe this was actually happening. They were so careful about what food Hope ate or even saw. For the purpose of the party the cupcakes were in the kitchen along with any other food with milk in it. Shane and Oliver had asked guests to eat any food with milk in it in the kitchen and then wash their hands before returning to the party. It was also understood among the adults Shane and Oliver trusted most that Hope not be in the kitchen unaccompanied, or even better at all. Even after all of their precautions Shane was so angry something like this could have even happened.
"Who was…Who…"
Jessica started to cry louder as she reached out to her mother, Shane took a few deep breaths and then took Jessica into her arms and cradled her in an effort to bring some sort of comfort to her daughter.
"I'll stay with Jessica Shane," Her mother Catherine told her, "Do you have any bottles made up?"
"I think… uh…" Shane tried hard to think but shook her head and then started crying again, "I can't remember."
"There's two here in the fridge and some formula," Rita quickly checked the fridge and the cupboards, "Norman and I will stay here with Anna and help clean up the party. She can sleep in Jessica's crib with her."
Shane slowly nodded her head as she handed Jessica to her mother, "I need to-"
"I will drive you to the hospital and stay with you and Oliver." Joe told her.
When Shane and Joe arrived at the hospital, they were directed to the ICU floor. As soon as they arrived on the floor Shane started to cry as she thought of just a few months ago when she and Oliver were on the same floor waiting for information. Shane and Joe found Oliver pacing in a waiting room and Shane went to her husband and hugged him tightly. They hugged for a few minutes leaning on each other for support and then Oliver cleared his throat and spoke.
"Hope had another reaction in the ambulance and she…they brought her straight up here and they were putting a breathing tube in her when they directed me here." Oliver tried to keep his voice from breaking, he wanted to be able to stay strong for Shane even if he wanted to cry.
"That's bad, Oliver a breathing tube means she's…" Shane lost her balance and Oliver helped her sit down in a chair, "We need to pray. We need everyone we know too-" She went to look for her phone in her purse but found that her hands were too shaky to look and she just didn't have the patience to retrieve her phone.
"I will call people from out church and ask that they pray," Joe told Shane, "You two stay here the doctor should be coming soon." Joe left the waiting room.
"Why is this happening!" Shane sobbed, "She's just a baby! What could… I don't know why God would want to take our baby!"
"I do not know either Shane," Oliver hugged her, he wished he had more to say to her to explain what was going on, but he didn't. He was just as angry and confused as she was. As they waited for any news on Hope they prayed for her and thought about happy memories.
July
Thirteen-month-old Hope whimpered as she looked around her for Baby Shark. She had just come back from being changed, surely Baby Shark didn't go too far away. She saw her toy on a nearby shelf. "Mommy!" She yelled and pointed to her favourite toy.
"I'll get Baby Shark in a few minutes sweetie, I'm feeding Jessica right now," Shane explained to her daughter, "Why don't you come and play with some of your other toys?" She suggested. Is your baby hungry?"
"No," Hope started to cry, she then decided to rescue Baby Shark herself, she stood up and walked unsteadily to the toy shelf that was close by, she reached up and managed to retrieve Baby Shark. She sat back down again and smiled and hugged her favourite toy.
"Hope!" Shane smiled excitedly at her daughter "You walked all on your own. Mommy's so proud of you. When I finish feeding Jessica, we can call Daddy at work. You're such a big girl walking all by yourself."
"Daddy," Hope giggled happily as she sucked on Pink Blanket and then hugged Baby Shark again.
Present Day
Shane was pulled from her memory when a doctor walked into the waiting room, "Are you the parents of Hope O'Toole?" She asked as she walked towards Shane and Oliver.
"Y-yes," Olivier answered as they quickly stood up, "How's our daughter?"
"She's breathing on her own again but she is not out of danger yet. The two anaphylactic attacks she had nearly caused her heart and lungs to stop working. I have never seen a milk allergy quite as severe as hers. If you had not already had an Ep-Pen I do not think we would be having this discussion. I do believe Hope will recover but it will not be an easy next few hours."
"Can we see her?" Shane asked, "I have her…her favourite toy and blanket, she can't be without them," She held up a bag she had very quickly thrown Baby Shark and Pink Blanket in.
"Of course, I will take you to her room. My name is Dr. Newcomb and I will be your daughter's doctor. I've admitted her to the ICU ward for the moment only until she is out of the woods. After that I would like to keep her in the hospital for forty-eight hours. There are some tests I would like to run. In the meantime, I will have a nurse talk to you about getting Hope a Medic-Alert bracelet, I believe she needs one." Dr. Newcomb led Shane and Oliver into a dimly lit room where Hope was lying in a crib as a nurse changed her diaper. "If you have any further questions for me please have a nurse page me. I'll come and check on Hope in a few hours." Dr. Newcomb walked out of the room.
Shane gasped and started to cry again as she saw Hope lying in the crib. She was connected to an IV and still had rashes around her mouth from her reaction. She was breathing heavily as she slept. Shane took a few steps towards her and saw she was wearing a pink cast and her head was bandaged. "Why…" She pointed shakily to the cast.
"The fall from the counter caused her right arm to break and her head to be bruised," The nurse finished changing Hope's diaper, "I apologise that Dr. Newcomb didn't tell you that. I think she just wanted to get you in here to see Hope and let you know her condition is serious but she should recover. After what happened to her having a broken arm and a bruised head isn't much of a concern."
"Mommy and Daddy are here sweetie," Oliver reached through the crib bars and squeezed her hand, "We brought you Baby Shark and Pink Blanket too."
"Here, let me help you," The nurse took Baby Shark and Pink Blanket out of Shae's hands. She put Pink Blanket over top of her hospital sheets and gently tucked Baby Shark beside her in bed, "My name is Allison, I'm one of Hope's nurses. We'll come in frequently to see how she is. You may both stay with her all night and we will bring in a cot for you to sleep on. If you need assistance immediately please press this red button, it sends an alert to the nurses station."
"Thank you," Shane lowered one of the crib bars and gently kissed Hope's forehead. She then raised the bar again and sat down in a chair beside her bed.
The rest of the night went by in short windows of time. Shane and Oliver each stepped out of the room at different times in an effort to try and not fall apart. Neither of them knew what to say to one another so they stayed quiet as they sat beside Hope's bed and watched her sleep. Joe called everyone to update them before going back to his house to try and get some sleep. Since neither Shane or Oliver wanted to leave Hope's side neither one of them got any sleep and so when morning came, they were exhausted.
Hope slowly opened her eyes and started to cry weakly, "Mo-" She breathed heavily.
Shane leapt out of her chair at the sound of her daughter's voice as Oliver pushed the emergency button, "Mommy and Daddy are here sweetie. You're in the hospital, you had a little accident."
Hope opened her eyes further and looked at her mother before reaching for her only to see a cast on her arm. That caused her to cry even more and she fussed and fussed as she tried to shake the cast off.
"Hi Hope, how's my favourite patient?" A friendly nurse walked into the room, her voice cheerful, "I'm so glad you're up. I need your help," She quickly checked Hope's vital signs before smiling as the toddler calmed down, "You have a cast on your arm, but Baby Shark was too scared to get one. She really missed you, can you help me give Baby Shark a cast, so she feels all better?"
Hope looked at the nurse and then at her toy who was lying beside her, "Baby Ah owie?" asked weakly.
"Yes, Baby Shark broke her fin that is a very big boo-boo." The nurse explained, "Can you help me? What's Baby Shark's favourite colour.
"ind," Hope answered.
"Alright, I'll be right back with some bandages, we can give Baby Shark a pink cast," The nurse walked out of the room.
"Oh Hope," Shane lowered one of the crib bars and gave her daughter and gentle hug, "Mommy and Daddy love you so much."
Hope gave her mother a kiss on the cheek, "Mommy ad?"
"No, no," Shane whipped away her tears, "Mommy is so happy you're okay." She hugged her again, "I'm going to go call Grandma and then Grandpa. Daddy is going to stay with you," Shane kissed her cheek before stepping out of the room.
The nurse returned with some bandages to make Baby Shak's cast and Hope looked at the nurse as she placed the bandage on Baby Shark. When Baby Shark had a cast on the nurse handed her over to Hope, "Now do you think Baby Shark would eat some yummy applause for breakfast?"
"No," Hope shook her head as she cried again, "Daddy ago,"
Oliver stroked Hope's head gently, "I'm sorry sweetheart, we don't have any special yogurt here for you to eat. When you're all better I promise you can have some strawberry yogurt."
Hope pouted and then started to cry.
"Well, I think we do have some of your special yogurt here Hope," The nurse explained to her, "But I think Mommy or Daddy would need to come with me to be sure. When your Mommy comes back, we can go and get some yogurt."
"Daddy go ago," Hope stared at the nurse and frowned slightly.
Oliver smiled, knowing that if Hope had enough energy to frown or care who fed her made him know she was going to be okay, "I always feed Hope her yogurt, we have a seven month old as well so my wife and I try to share as much parenting as we can. While she's feeding our younger daughter in the morning, I feed Hope."
"Oh, well Daddy can come with me to get your yogurt then," The nurse said, "My name's Melissa by the way," She introduced herself.
"Mommy ago," Hope saw Shane walk into the room.
"We have some yogurt here for Hope but I'm going to go with her Daddy to make sure we get the best yogurt. Melissa explained to Shane,
"Good," Shane nodded her head, "Oliver, my Mom is going to bring Jessica here so I can feed her, and she said I should probably try and get some sleep after."
"I agree, you need to sleep, I think we should both try and get some sleep today."
Now that bHope was doing getter she was moved out of the ICU and into another private room on a recovery ward. She was excited her new room had a TV but was upset when Baby Shark wasn't on the TV. When Hope's strawberry yogurt finally arrived she was only able to eat a little of it as she got upset that she couldn't pick up anything with her casted arm. After that she cried and cried as she tried to shake it off. Oliver was trying to comfoet her when Shane got a text message from her mother saying they had a surprise for Hope just outside the door.
"Hope," Shane stood up from her chair, "I think Grandma is here to see you.
"Gama!" Hope smiled for the first time in a few hours as she struggled to move out of Oliver's arms with her cast on. "No!" She looked at the cast, "I no."
"I know you don't like the cast sweetie but it is helping your arm to feel better," Oliver kissed the top of her head, "Now why don't we stay here. I wonder what Grandma brought for you." He said as he saw the door open and Joe come in carrying two presents, Catherine followed carrying Jessica and her baby bag.
"Gama, Gapa, Ica!" Hope clapped her hands as she saw her Grandmother come into the room carrying Jessica who smiled as soon as she saw her parents.
"Mommy Ica," Hope watched as Shane took Jessica into her arms and kissed her, "Mommy Ica!"
Shane carried Jessica over to Hope's bed and placed her next to Hope. She crawled over to her sister and kissed her happily giggling.
"Ica!" Hope hugged her happily and smiled.
"Rita and Norman are going to bring Anna by after her nap, we didn't want to overwhelm Hope all at once," Joe explained, "Hope, do you want to see what your first Christmas Present is?"
"Prnet!" Hope pointed to the box.
"Santa Clause was really sad that you were in the hospital so he gave me one of your presents earlier. Santa Clause and I are old friends." Joe further explained.
"Ooh!" Hope exclaimed, "Anta prenet!"
"Santa figured you and Baby Shark would both like this Present since you're going to be in the hospital for a while. You, Mommy and Daddy can open this one first and then I'll open the bigger one okay."
"Oday," Hope nodded her head and tried to help Shane unwrap her present. When she saw what it was she looked up at her parents, "IPad," She pointed to the tablet.
Oliver looked quite shocked as his daughter identified the object. He already thought she spent too much time in front of electronics and this present was only going to make things worse in his opinion. However, Shane had shown him the educational value to the device and so he agreed.
"This is a special kids Baby Shark IPad," Shane took the devic and turned it on showing Hope all of the pre-loaded Baby Shark games and songs as well as apps like YouTube Kids and Netflix kids. Baby Shark has her own TV Show now so you can watch and play all new games." Shane swiped to the different screens so Hope could see all of the different options.
"Yay!" Hope cheered happily. She tried to take the IPad but started to cry when her arm hurt her.
"Baby Ah!" She sobbed into Shane's shirt.
"Here's Baby Shark," Shane handed her the very well loved toy and helped her hold onto it with her cast on. "Why don't we see what present Grandpa opens," She placed Jessica in her lap beside Hope so she didn't crawl off the bed.
"Baby Shark has a lot of clothes and her own toys now and she doesne' really have anywhere to put them does she."
"No," Hope answered,
Joe laughed sligjrtyk at Hope's honest answer, "Well she does now because Santa got her a closet for all of her clothes toys," Joe unwrapped the gift to show a box that had a Baby Shark closet on it.
"Baby Ah ook tee" Hope nudged her toy in the direction of the closet. She waited for a few seconds and then said, "Baby Ah happy. Hope happy."
"Well I am certainly glad you're both happy," Joe told her smiling, "We're all so glad you're okay. You know what we should do. We should watch some of Baby Shark's new show while Mommy and Daddy go home and get some sleep. Jessica is going to go home to Grandma's apartment with her. Then Auntie Rita and Uncle Norman are going to come and you can see Anna and then Mommy and Daddy will be back."
"No! Mommy Daddy no go!" Hope shook her head as she hugged Shane.
"No Hope," Joe walked towards the bed and carefully took her into his arms and then sitting back on the bed, "Mommy and Daddy need to have a nap. I'm going to stay with you and we can watch Baby Shark's show and have a nap too. Should Pink Blanket have a nap too or do you think she's going to be silly and stay awake.
"Ind Bakie be illy," Hope laughed, "No nap."
"While I think we should tell Pink Blanket that if she doesn't nap she'll be too tired to play with Anna later. Anna is just like Jessica, she's a baby but she loves Pink Blanket so much.
"No my bankie," Hope responded.
"Anna doesn't want to take Pink Blanket. She has her own toys but she wants to play with you and Baby Shark and Pink Blanket."
"Oh," Hope yawned.
"Why don't we say goodbye to Mommy and Daddy? Grandma and Jessics can stay for a little bit longer," Joe suggested.
Hope started to cry again. Eventually after six hugs and kisses from Hope Shane and Oliver were able to leave. They felt bad for leaving but also knew Hope was in good hands and they needed to get some sleep. When Shane and Oliver returned to Hope's hospital room they saw that Joe was helping Hope understand why different people would be spending time at the hospital with her for the rest of her stay. He said there would always be someone with her but people needed to sleep and look after Anna and Jessica as well.
On the afternoon of Christmas Eve Shane and Oliver brought Hope back to the house after she had been discharged. Upon entering the family room everyone was surprised to see wrapped presents underneath the Christmasd tree.
"Oh, look Santa came early and he bought you girls more presents too," Shane smiled as she looked around the room. She knew she and Oliver had not bought Hope and Jessica this many presents. "I wonder if Santa is happy with his new Amazon Prime account," She laughed. She had finally been able to convince her mother the values of Amazon Prime and she was very glad she seemed to be enjoying using it. Shane put Jessica down on the carpet before going into the kitchen. She was not surprised but relieved when she saw anything that could contain milk was gone. As she was walking out she noticed a note on the kitchen counter and after she read it she smiled. Walking back into the family room she handed the note to Oliver, "It;'s from Santa's Elves, we have our dinner for tonight in the fridge and tomorrow's Christmad dinner is going to be made for us. Apparently we're not allowed to help."
Oliver read the note and immediately recognized his father's handwriting, he smiled at how grateful they were to have such caring friends and family.
"Well how about we take a family picture and then open some presents." Shane got out her cell phone and placed Hope and Jessica together on the carpet. She sat with Hope in her lap and Oliver was holding Jessica. She was just about to take the picture when Hope stood up and knocked Jessica in the face with her cast causing her sister to scream.
