AN: Here is Chapter One. I hope you all enjoy reading it!
Disclaimer: I don't own anything, I just enjoy the plot bunnies that came with the movie.
Sarah rolled over to turn her alarm off, even though she wasn't ready to get up. She hadn't slept well the night before due to having another dream of the labyrinth. She hated dreaming of that place. It only reminded her of her lapse into insanity that happened ten years ago where she entered a massive labyrinth to save her baby brother. The night ended with a celebration with Hoggle, Sir Didymus, Ludo, and some of the other creatures she came across that night. The next morning her step mother, Irene, discovered the mess left behind and when she questioned Sarah about it, Sarah lied and said she threw a party for herself. Irene didn't find it amusing and ordered Sarah to clean her room.
Over the next couple of weeks, Sarah overheard her parents talking about her. They had noticed Sarah was always in her room, talking to herself about goblins, fairies, Toby, and even something about a goblin king. Irene was complaining to Roger about how it's not healthy for Sarah to always be alone. She should be going out with friends or on dates.
But they watched as Sarah stopped going out, preferring to stay in her room. They watched as Sarah continued to talk to herself, not just reciting lines from plays, but having actual conversations with herself. They watched as Sarah would accidentally call her dog Ambrosious instead of Merlin. Irene even noticed that Sarah wasn't eating as much anymore and had a new dislike for peaches, which she used to love.
But what finally caused Irene to seek help was when Sarah had an outburst over her vanity mirror. When Toby was two, he was in Sarah's room trying to get her attention. He then threw his toy he was holding at her mirror and it shattered. Sarah screamed and cried over it, saying that she would never be able to see her friends again. When they calmed Toby down enough to ask what happened, all he kept saying was "goblin" and pointed to where her mirror used to be. Between Sarah's hysteric over her mirror and Toby's screams about a goblin Irene feared that Sarah was beginning to rub off on Toby and decided it was time for her to see a psychiatrist.
After a few sessions, the psychiatrist was worried that Sarah may be showing early signs of schizophrenia. It would explain her withdrawal from her family and friends, her lack of motivation in school, and it would explain her hallucinating an adventure in a labyrinth. Her psychiatrist prescribed her an antipsychotic medication and she had to go to therapy.
After a while, Sarah had started to believe that she had made it all up. She sat on her bed and looked around her room. Almost everything she saw in the labyrinth she had in her room, between her books, her stuffed animals, and all her knicknacks. She even had a toy marble labyrinth. Seeing all of her belongings and the labyrinth book she decided to pack it all up and remove it from her room.
Sarah settled back into her life before her hallucination happened. She started going out again with her friends after school. Her grades were picking back up. She even stopped treating Irene like a wicked stepmother.
Sarah's psychiatrist was still having Sarah take her antipsychotic medication and seeing a therapist, but decided that she was not showing early stages of schizophrenia. She displayed no other symptoms and after starting her treatment plan nothing new displayed. Sarah was possibly just suffering from a lot of stress between her mother leaving, her father remarrying, and having a new baby in the house. Her psychiatrist didn't want to risk it though so kept Sarah on her antipsychotic medication.
Sarah decided she would go to college but that she would stay close to home just in case something happened. During Sarah's first year of school she stayed away from acting, afraid it would cause her hallucinations to return. But Sarah couldn't stay away from the arts and discovered that she had a talent of drawing. By her second year she had convinced herself that she was better and that she could try doing a play. If it caused problems she would quit, but it didn't and Sarah was ecstatic to be able to participate in a play again. She ended up majoring in theater and minored in art.
When Sarah graduated she moved into a new single room apartment not far from her parents home. It wasn't very big, but she made it home. She auditioned for a role in the local small theater and got the part. Since then she has been a regular actor for that theater. But the small theater wasn't paying enough, so Sarah had to get a second job somewhere.
She was walking home down the main downtown street when she noticed a little fantasy store. Everything you would associate with fantasy could be found in this store. There were statues of dragons, fairies, mystical animals and creatures. Books lined the back wall, covering famous fantasy novels to ones Sarah has never heard of before. Books about magic, different worlds, and about any creature you could imagine. Sarah had to remind herself that these things existed before her adventure. She managed to calm herself down when she heard a voice ask if she needed any assistance. Sarah was just about to tell the woman no when she noticed the help wanted sign by the checkout line. Sarah couldn't explain it to anyone, not even herself, but right then she just knew she had to work here, hallucinations or not.
Sarah looked at the clock again and sighed knowing she had to get up. Sarah sat up and scanned her room but didn't see anything different or out of place. No goblins were in her room and she was not at the labyrinth. She sighed again and got up to take a shower before going to work.
When she entered her living room she stopped and saw her sketchbook on the table. Sarah remembered sitting down to draw last night, but now couldn't remember what she drew. She opened up the book and turned to the last drawing she made. Sarah stared in shock at the picture of the labyrinth she drew. It looked exactly how she remembered seeing it from her bedroom window eight years ago.
Sarah didn't know how long she stood there, staring at the picture before she snapped the book shut and shoved it into her bag. She quickly left her apartment and made her way down the stairs. Her apartment building was close to the store where she worked, so she usually walked there.
On her walk she focused on taking deep breaths. Just because she had a dream and drew a picture of the labyrinth didn't mean she was going to start having hallucinations again. Sarah wasn't going to let this ruin her day. Tomorrow was the Summer Solstice and it also happened to be her twenty-fifth birthday. It was also the last day her friend and boss Addy would be here.
"Morning Addy," Sarah said as she walked into the store. She saw Addy by the cash register, working on packing up what hadn't been sold during their closing sale.
"Good morning Sarah. I trust your night was well?" Addy spoke, not looking up from her task.
"It was alright I guess. A dream kept me up last night."
"A dream?" Want me to interpret it for you? We can go sit at my table and look into the crystal ball to see if it has anything to do with your future." She gave a playfully sinister grin.
"Addy, you know I don't want you to look. I don't even really believe in all the stuff you say you can do." Sara teased back.
"Really Sarah? You have worked with me for the last year, I'd thought by now you would have started to believe in some things. Remember, nothing is as it seems."
"Yeah, so I've been told. Anyway, what would you like me to help you pack up?"
Slowly throughout the day they were able to finish packing everything up while sharing great memories the two shared. Sarah had just put the last box into the back store room and when she came out to see Addy holiday a gift bag. "Happy Birthday Sarah!"
"I told you that I didn't want anything, just going out to have a few drinks with you tonight is all I need."
"I know, but I wanted to do it anyway. Now come open your gift."
Sarah smiled and took the bag before pulling out a small jar full of a pink powder that looked an awful lot like glitter. "What is this?"
"It's fairy dust. You throw it at someone and they will feel great pain."
"Pain?"
"Well what would you expect fairies to do?"
"I thought fairies were supposed to do nice things, like granting wishes?"
"Shows what you know." Addy laughed."Come on, let's go get those drinks."
Sarah looked back at the jar of dust with a strange sense that she had this conversation before; shrugging it off, she followed her friend.
They headed down the street to one of the little bars. Addy always kept the conversation going, whether it was talking about work, life, or commenting on some of the good looking men that were there that night. After a few drinks Addy tried to convince Sarah to buy one particularly hot guy a drink, but Sarah quickly shot her down.
"Come on Sarah, it's your birthday tomorrow. Try and have some fun for a change and stop acting like the world is going to end." Addy said while nugging Sarah.
"Sorry. I am having fun…"
"But?" Addy pressured for Sarah to continue.
"But I'm just not thrilled about you moving away. You still haven't told me where you are going."
"I told you I was moving back home for awhile."
"Yes, but where is home?"
"Sarah just because I'm moving doesn't mean that I'm going to stop talking to you. And I will come visit in December."
"You didn't answer my question."
Addy sighed, "You wouldn't believe me."
"What? It's not like you're from some Labyrinth in a made up world."
"Sarah?"
"Sorry, I guess maybe I had a little too much to drink."
"Labyrinth?"
"It was my dream. I even drew a picture of it, here." Sarah pulled her sketchbook out of her bag and showed the drawing she made.
"You had a dream about this place?" Addy's voice was full of concern as she looked at the drawing.
"Dreams. I've had them before, but it's been a long time. But let's just forget about it, it's all just make believe anyway...and please don't try to look into it. Just drop it, please?"
"Okay." Addy sighed, before paying both tabs. "Come on, I have one more gift for you."
Sarah frowned at her friend before being ushered out the door and back towards the shop. Sarah watched as her friend went to her crystal ball that was still set up. When Addy touched it, colors swirled inside of it. She carefully picked it up and placed it in a box.
"Here, I want you to have my crystal."
"What? But Addy.."
"Just take my gift. You can use it to talk to me after tomorrow." Somewhat concerned and confused, Sarah took the box. "Now come on, I'll walk you home, it's after midnight."
Sarah nodded and the two started walking toward Sarah's apartment. About halfway there Sarah had this feeling that they were being followed and she noticed Addy kept looking behind them. But when Sarah turned to look, Addy shook her head and started walking faster.
They stopped at a crosswalk to wait for an oncoming car to pass. Sarah noticed the car do a slight swerve before speeding up. She was about to say something about it to Addy, when Addy yelled at Sarah to move. Sarah had barely made it out of the way before the car swerved again and hit the light post.
When Sarah turned back she saw the driver slumped forward on the airbag and the front of the car was crunched up. She then saw someone come out of the other side of the car before disappearing from sight. Confused Sarah turned to check on Addy when Sarah saw Addy crushed between the car and the light post.
"ADDY!" Sarah ran over to her friend and started to shake her hand. Addy didn't respond. "Addy? Can you hear me? Addy please wake up!" Sarah continued to scream at her friend while she tried to see if there was any way she could free her friend.
People who were still out and near enough to hear the crash came running over to help. Someone had mentioned that someone had gone to go call for an ambulance. Sarah tuned them all out. She wouldn't let go of Addy's hand until the paramedics showed up.
The fire fighters and the paramedics worked on getting the driver out of the car and Addy out from the front of the car. Sarah was escorted onto another ambulance and all three went to the hospital.
Sarah got to the hospital after the other two and heard that they already declared both the driver and Addy dead. Sarah sat in shock as the doctors cleared her of injuries and said she could be discharged and left to contact her father for her.
Two police officers showed up to question her about the accident. First they asked her about Addy to see if she had any information on her next of kin or who they should contact. Sarah sadly told them that she didn't they asked her to tell them about the accident, she told them about seeing the car swerve before speeding up, and she mentioned to them about seeing someone exit the car.
"That's highly unlikely for someone to have been able to get out of the car with the damage done to it…" one officer started to say.
"Look I'm telling you what I saw. Someone got out of the car and just disappeared." Sarah interrupted.
"Alright. What did they look like?"
"I don't know. It was too dark, I couldn't see anything, and he disappeared too quickly."
"What do you mean disappear? Like they walked away?" the second officer asked.
"No...I don't know, they just vanished. Look I know it sounds crazy, but it's what I saw, they were there one second and just gone the next."
The officers glanced at each other before thanking Sarah for her time and that if they need anything else they will be in touch. They stopped at a nearby station and Sarah could hear them asking if she happened to have hit her head in the accident. The nurse grabbed Sarah's chart and looked it over. He told them no, but that it was listed that Sarah was on antipsychotic medication so they shouldn't take everything she told them at face value.
Not wanting to listen to them talk about her, Sarah looked around the room and started to listen in on a conversation two doctors were having.
"It's really strange. After hearing how the paramedics said they found the driver, his neck shouldn't have been broken the way it was. That crash shouldn't have caused his neck to snap that way."
"Just let it go. We don't know how he was sitting in the car before the crash, something could have caused it." said another doctor.
"I know. It's just strange is all."
Sarah watched them walk off before seeing her father walking into the room.
"Sarah! Oh I was so worried."
"I'm fine Daddy. I didn't get hurt. But Addy….she didn't make it." and that's when Sarah started crying. Her father gave her a hug and then went to go see if he was allowed to take her home.
Her father ended up bringing her to his house, saying she should stay with them for the night after everything that happened. When they got home, they sat and talked about what had happened before Sarah convinced him that she was ok and just wanted to be left alone for a little bit. Not knowing what else to do, he went upstairs and back to bed.
After a little while Sarah got up and left the house. It was almost sunrise and Sarah had walked back to the store. Once she got there she realized she didn't have a key anymore, so she sat down on the step and started to cry again.
She tried to stop her sniffling when she heard footsteps approaching. "Adella?" a male voice softly spoke.
Sarah looked up and gasped. Staring right back at her, just as shocked, was the Goblin King.
AN: I would love to hear some feedback to see how I am doing so far! Please and thank you!
