The 'Van' as it turned out was a massive four wheeled monstrosity with a mural of some vengeful goddess in a storm painted on the sides. It seemed to fit the aesthetic of the band quite well.
"Cool…" Wind breathed; eyes wide when he saw it.
Winona opened the back doors and gestured to the interior. "Thanks, kiddo… Hop in."
The rest of the chain followed suite. The space inside was roomy enough for them all to sit comfortably, upon a thick plush black carpet with a series of matchy-matchy pillows. (Black-light)purple fairy lights ringed the top of the compartment and a series of surreal luminous posters were plastered to the interior walls. The inside smelled very strongly of a certain medicinal herb that was known to some of the party. Legend and Hyrule exchanged knowing glances as they took their seats. Legend smirked. This particular plant was wild and plentiful in both of their Hyrules.
"Normally our equipment goes back there..." said Winona ruefully as she put the keys into the ignition. "But…I guess we don't have to worry about that just now." She started the vehicle. As it thrummed to life most of the Chain seemed to briefly go rigid, eyes wide and darting. Wild laughed at this and upon seeing their friend's reaction they seemed to try to relax too.
"It's just a machine..." He said gently, between giggles. "a transport, like a carriage without horses. We're ok."
The van began to move. Hyrule gave a thin keening sound that was probably supposed to be a laugh as he pulled his legs up to his chest and pressed his back to the wall of the horseless carriage. He buried his face in his knees. He was not enjoying this at all. Sky gently rubbed his back in an attempt to comfort his friend.
Wind, however, was Very much enjoying the ride. The teen was sticking his head out the window nearer to the front and kept making little sounds of amazement. The buildings were SO TALL! Pillars of glass that scraped the very sky! He'd never seen anything like this place.. It was so bright… so Magical!
"They must go through a ton of candles…" He murmured to himself.
Twilight chuffed in agreement, he looked beyond, up to the sky itself, mouth agog.. There were no stars here, just a thick bruised-purple sky with a hazy orange glow from the city below. He was reminded of somewhere far away and felt both at once nostalgic and terribly uneasy. Time and Legend were preoccupied looking out the back windows. They watched with interest the steady stream of people crossing busy, lit streets and the seemingly endless line of other kinds of vehicles that came and went from everywhere. They were in every color, shape, and size, with bright glowing eyes on the front that illuminated their paths forward. The city seemed to move, ebbing and flowing, with a harmony of its own. Magical lights, laughter, music and exotic smells washed through the open windows.
"GUYSGUYS!" Wind suddenly cried in a staccato, immediately drawing the attention of the whole group to the windscreen up forward. "OH, By the THREE! LOOK!" He pointed excitedly out at what he was unable to articulate.
The Van was now crossing a gigantic bridge. Bright orange in color, it soared above the black waters below. The city of impossible lights glimmered, reflecting off of the waters surface, drifting away behind them with dizzying speed. They were apparently going much Much faster than it felt like they were. This world really was something else. Wind crowed, leaning out the window in obvious delight.
"Hey! Hey!" Laughed Winona "Get back in here! You want me to get pulled over?" She reached behind her and tugged the boy back down into his seat. He obliged but kept his chin on the edge of the window drinking in the night with a dreamy smile.
"I'm guessing…you guys haven't been in the city much, huh?" She ventured, eyes still on the road.
"That…would be something of an understatement." Wars replied from his seat, nearest to the driver. Though he too was marveling at the strange and wonderful world around them, he had seen other truly strange worlds before and wasn't as phased as some of his companions were by it all.
She gave the man riding shotgun a strange look at that, and a brief once over as if she were only really seeing him for the first time. "You're…. really not from around here, huh? Who are you people?"
It was Time who answered. "We….are travelers. We came to this place through a portal in time, as we have many before it. Though… I suspect that this place is much farther removed from our own than any we've seen before.
"Time traveling knights.." The woman murmured and laughed. "If I hadn't literally just seen you fight demons with magic and swords I would think you were crazy."
"Not All of us are 'knights'" legend called from the back of the van, pointedly, earning a mean glance over the shoulder from Wars.
"It's true!" chirped Wind from his spot behind Winona "I'm a Pirate!" He said with a prideful emphasis.
"…and pirates." She laughed. "Well? Welcome to San Francisco I guess?"
