Will found himself a phone in the mall and dialed the number to his house. He glanced over at Five who was a bit antsy and trying so hard to put on a brave bravado when Will knew Five was feeling lost. Will saw Five's green eyes deep in thought and wondered just what was going through his mind. After waiting for a short moment, Will's mother picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hi mom, it's Will. So um can you maybe pick me up from the mall?"
"Everything okay? I thought you wanted to start biking places yourself again? Is something going? Are you hurt? Is it any of those awful monsters again?"
Will sighed since it would always be natural for his mother to jump to conclusions but also be really mindful and caring so much.
"No mom, everything is fine. It's just…well I kind of made a new friend but he's far from his home. It wasn't the best for him but he has no place to go, can you pick us both up and can he stay with us for a little while, please?"
"A new friend? Did you meet at the mall?" she asked.
Will saw Five pacing and stroking the back of his neck, his eyes were filled of anger, perhaps at himself.
"Y-Yeah, his dad is like the worst and he doesn't have a way home. Please can you pick us both up?"
Will's mom, Joyce, was a bit unsure but Will was going up to bat for him. Joyce was a bit thrilled that Will was being more outgoing, or at least putting himself out there to make a new friend. This kid could be a good friend but Joyce needed to really see this kid.
"I will pick you both up but I do want to talk to him on the ride home. It's not like I'm picking up you and Mike. I'm sure he's fine but you know I just worry about you. I will be there in a few."
Will hung up and he gave a light smile to Five.
"She will be coming to pick us up."
Five chuckled at that since he wondered how trusting Will's mother was. He wouldn't trust him and he could perhaps take down everyone with little effort with his combat training.
"I didn't hear that I could stay over." Five sassed.
Will got all shy at that and quickly looked away from him. Great he made himself look stupid Will thought with embarrassment. Still he could tell from the light smirk that Five was trying to be fun.
"I know my mom. Once she talks with you and sees you're a decent person, she might let you stay as long as you need to. That's what I think."
Five chuckled at that but nodded. He was so used to most of his siblings and their brimming confidence. Seeing Will be all shy and unsure was almost new since it wasn't something he had much exposure to. Sure his sister Vanya was also quiet and shy, but only because they sadly left her out because of her lack of powers. Their father kept her from the rest of them and Five always saw Vanya as ordinary and kind of a drag to be around. Wow when Five thought about it, he and his family were very awful to her. Looking over at Will, he had a similar energy but yet Five wanted to get to know this strange yet ordinary teen boy. Ordinary Five thought but yet Will was so much more and he couldn't explain why.
"Good since it's either I crash at your place, a shelter, or just hide out in the mall when it closes. Least your house might have the best lodging and comfort by a mile compared to plans B and C."
Will laughed softly as they walked outside to wait for Will's mother to come get them. Both boys waited by the bike rack since Will took his bike to the mall. He would have rode back himself if it weren't for Five but Will kind of was excited if not nervous about the new kid he met. They were quiet since essentially they were both strangers. Will glanced over at Five and he could see Five was hiding his sadness about being here. He was trying, but Will could see Five nervously checking his nails and nervously stroking his neck.
"It's okay to be scared or upset. I mean, this would be a lot for anyone."
Five raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not scared of being here. The eighties aren't the apocalypse. It's just I'm….frustrated. I wanted to prove my old man wrong, that I can do this. It may have been out of spite and anger but I truly felt I was ready. I really don't want to hear him say I told you so but in my own head I could already hear him say that. Such a stubborn and selfish old man. It's like he wanted me to push myself without him and wanted to see me fail." Five expressed a bit bitterly and icily.
Will stroked his arm nervously. His father was a sore spot too, Will thought. Such a random aspect to bond over but he did already feel a connection to Five with their troublesome fathers.
"Least your father doesn't see you as a mistake and has all but given up on you. Mine was always trying to force me into things I didn't want to when he was around before he and my mom split. Always felt like he was ashamed of me and I'm not good enough. He's stopped coming by to try and have a relationship with me because I'm such a disappointment."
Five scoffed and shared,
"Mine didn't even want kids, but he adopted me and my siblings so he could make a difference. He did teach us but it was so he could exploit us and pit us against each other. All for what, glory, fame, prestige and he would get credit for the work he had us bust out asses over. Was all that fame and power worth dealing with kids you don't even like, let alone love."
Five clearly was omitting he was part of a superhero team since who knows just how much himself being here could mess up time. Least he had another four years to worry about any harm when regarding his other self being born so there was that. Fear kind of crept into Five's mind; just how long was he going to remain stuck. Days, weeks, years…got that was something truly heart wrenching. He bit his lip and tousled a bit of his hair in annoyance. Shit he thought, he was fucked if he could never get back home. He couldn't have a life here, he just couldn't.
"Did your father adopt you and your siblings because you had powers?" Will questioned.
Five snapped out of his thoughts and his eyes kind of widened.
"Excuse me?"
"W-Well, you said your father hated kids but he still adopted all of you. Don't see how he could exploit you unless you all had powers, right? So that means he made you all like a team to fight crime and taught you how to use your powers...kind of like the X-Men accept you're not mutants...least I think not."
Huh Will was kind of smart; not nearly as smart as he was but he did come to a reasonable conclusion. Five cracked a small yet unsure smile and nodded.
"Yeah he did and yes we were like a hero team. But we can't tell your mother about this. She will think I'm sort of a government experiment and turn me in just to protect your ass. I really don't want to result to staying in shelters to get by until I get home."
Will nodded and he didn't want to involve the government either. He's been through enough problems the last two years and he just wanted to enjoy some peace without the government checking in on him. He had very faint tinglings but not as severe as last fall.
"I wasn't going to tell her anything; that will be on you if you want to share you're from the future and have like these superpowers. You will have your story to tell my mom about why you're here and need to crash."
Five nodded and glanced over Will once more. He was really putting his life in this stranger's hands. Eh it could have been worse Five thought and he kind of liked the kid. They didn't wait long until Will's mother pulled up and got out of her car. She helped Will to put his bike on her car to support it on the ride bike. Five looked at Will's mother and it was clear Will got a lot of his looks from her. He looked to see how soft his mother was to him and he kind of felt a twinge of something he couldn't describe. Will's mother noticed him and looked a bit to her son first.
"Is this the boy Will you talk about on the phone?"
Will nodded and motioned Five to come closer to the car. He gave a faint little wave and a small smile to Will's mother to appear friendly, which was hard since he was kind of still frustrated and panicked from time traveling back in time to this decade.
"Yes mom. This is Aidan."
"Hello Mrs. Byers. I'm so sorry Will had to call you and ask you to get us. I couldn't take my father and his awful homeschooling and treatment of me. However I realized I was in over my head but I don't have a good home to go back to. He will surely be upset and I need someplace to stay until I figure out where I can go."
Joyce looked to Five and noticed that he was in a uniform. Maybe his father was keen on having them be formal in their home schooling and thus the outfit. He didn't look to be a bad kid and in fact he almost looked a bit posh for a runaway. Still Joyce knew how appearances can deceive and wondered just how 'Aidan' was emotionally. He ran away for a reason and that tore Joyce up.
"Well I'm not going to turn a young boy away, but you will follow my rules if you stay with us. Also, I will not tolerate bullying of my son and you will treat him kindly, you understand." Joyce spoke firmly.
"Completely." Five stated.
Joyce nodded and motioned Aidan to get in the car with her son Will. As they drove home, Joyce was going on with questions since she really needed to know who she was bringing in. She learned his last name was Hagreeves, the fact he had six other siblings who maybe were being abused from her own conclusions, and that he liked science. She glanced at the back and she could see her son Will was smiling and making small talk with Aidan. Joyce smiled lightly as she saw Will's eyes brim with something that had been missing for almost 2 years.
"So you have any hobbies Aidan?"
Five stopped for a moment and thought about what he did that he genuinely liked to do in the small free time he had.
"Um…well I do like reading I guess and science. My father usually has us involved with education and learning and exercise regimens that we hardly had time for much relaxing. Kind of had this idea that we should always be kept busy and always practice what he taught us."
That was putting it mildly he thought with a sigh. Some of the best times were when his siblings snuck out of the academy; like going to eat donuts or ice cream.
Joyce frowned lightly at that since Aidan looked to be the same age as Will.
"There's a time for learning but he seems to have robbed you of your childhood, you poor thing. While you're here with us do make sure to have fun okay? Will can maybe have you get into his game he likes."
Will let out a slight groan but he knew his mother was just trying to support him and encourage the friendship. Five meanwhile raised an eyebrow since he was curious as to what Will's mother suggested.
"What game?" Five asked.
"Dungeons and Dragons, it's a role playing fantasy game where you make characters and undergo many scenarios. You roll dice to perform actions and take down monsters. It's really cool. Have you heard of it?"
Five was vaguely familiar with it; but like most fun things his father would have deemed it a waste of time. Though Five did seem intrigued with the dice element, the statistics involved and it did seem like it could be a good way to get lost in something fun and sounded cool.
"Vaguely but my father would probably never let me or my siblings play. Perhaps when I'm here you can teach me. I'm up for anything and it could be fun."
Will's eyes widened with excitement and was starting to like Five so much more.
"I would gladly teach you; of course tomorrow though since…today's been a hell of one for you right and we would need to make you a character which is a huge part of the fun. This is going to be cool and you won't regret it Aidan, I promise."
They drove up to the house and Aiden couldn't help but glance over at the rather small yet modest house. It wasn't the 42 bedroom, 19 bathroom like mansion he was used to but oddly it just felt nicer than the academy. It just felt…warm and inviting, something Five needed at this very moment. Will noticed Five looking over his home and he felt a bit nervous about his thoughts. Based on the uniform Five wore, he must have been used to so much and now he has to make do with far less.
"T-This is our home."
"I see Will, very cozy looking." Five commented.
The three of them went in and Five was glancing at the interior. He cracked a faint smile looking at the photos in the house, the sort of messy living room, and a very cozy kitchen. He felt his stomach growl and he politely asked Joyce,
"May I make myself something to eat?"
"Oh sure you can, Aidan. Want me to whip something up for you?"
Five shook his head as he looked in the cabinets and shelves to make his go to comfort food. He grabbed sliced white bread, peanut butter, and mini marshmallows. Will stared at the Frankenstein monster sandwich Five made and was oddly curious. Five motioned Will to the ingredients to have him try it before he deemed it gross. Five was just so glad to have one of his favorite foods as he took a huge bite into the sandwich. Will made one for himself and strangely, the sandwich just worked. Five gave Will a cocky smile and asked,
"You thought this was a weird ass sandwich didn't you?"
Will laughed but nodded in agreement.
"Yeah I did but come on, who would think to put marshmallows with peanut butter?" Will defended as he took another bite of his sandwich.
"Probably the same weirdos who came up with the fluffernutter sandwich. Same sort of thing except the marshmallows aren't in a spread. But I never said I was normal, not that I want to be. Want some milk?"
Will nodded and Five got them glasses and filled them up. It kind of was nice seeing Five had quirks that didn't seem to fit the 'prep school looking smart guy'. He wondered what other things Five liked and if perhaps they could be more than just friends because of convenience. Joyce looked onward and smiled since Will and Aidan were getting along.
After the boys ate, Will brought Five to his room and Five was intrigued by the art in Will's room. He could tell Will drew them and Five chuckled in amusement. At first Will thought Five was going to taunt him and tease him for his art until Five complimented,
"Not bad Will. Did you draw all of these? Pretty cool."
Will smiled a bit sheepishly and questioned,
"You mean that? You're not saying that to be nice?"
"Not in the slightest. I mean my sister Vanya is great at the violin so I can appreciate someone's art or music talents. Besides I can see the heart in these and some of them do have a nice horror atmosphere in them. I would like to know the inspiration behind some of these at a later point if you'd like."
Will knew some of these Five might not understand or believe him since they were ways for him to cope with being trapped in the Upside Down and being possessed by the Mind Flayer. Despite liking Five, they needed to build trust.
"Some of them are a bit personal, like part of my past within the last couple of years. I can share some of them if you share some of your past. Gradually of course since we have the rest of the summer at least right?"
Five forced a smile but he truly didn't know how much time they would have. It could very well be just the summer or perhaps even a few weeks, months, or years. He could already tell that Will was getting attached to him and Five knew in time travel no one was truly insignificant. This boy was going to make things easy yet hard on him. This was even evident when Will looked over Five's body and expressed,
"You and I might be the same size. You can borrow some of my clothes until we can get yourself a small wardrobe while you're here." Will said as he pulled out a pair of pajamas for him.
Five had carefully looked over the house and it was clear the Byers were nowhere near well off and he felt bad for even imposing on them.
"I can manage just by borrowing but even then I feel bad you have to put up with me. It was my own fault for getting myself stuck in 1985 and now I'm doing god knows what to time by being here."
Will tilted his head since was him being here really going to impact so much. Then again, he was making connections with him and his family and that might lead them on different paths and maybe change their lives. Will can understand Five's worries but he reassured,
"Look if I didn't want to help, I would have just left you in the theater alone. I wanted to help you and still do. My mom does as well and we will manage, trust me okay. I don't want you to go and struggle in a shelter or on the streets or be living in the mall like a rat. Now how about you take a shower and you can rest in my bed tonight. I will get a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor for the night. We can trade off to make it fair if you're truly worried about putting me out."
Five chuckled and nodded.
"Yeah you have a point….thanks Will. You are truly something else, in a good way."
Five quickly took a shower and changed into the blue striped pjs Will let him borrow. He glanced at Will to be certain he could crash in his bed and Will nodded. Five made himself comfortable in the bed while Will slept close by in a sleeping bag. As Five was trying to drift off to sleep, he wondered what his family was doing. He knew his father was probably going to let him suffer and not come looking for him to punish him. Five knew he could have been ready but maybe he wasn't given how he trapped himself in the 80s. He wouldn't try again until he figured out the exact scientific formula. Five also wondered if his siblings missed him. He did cause a stir at breakfast and really most of his siblings found him to be an asshole. Sighing angrily at himself, he placed his head on the pillow and carefully hummed 'I Think We're Alone Now' in a low tone since he was pretty sure the song wasn't out yet, 87 he believed. Will could vaguely listen to Five's hums and found them quite nice. He glanced to see Five was asleep and he couldn't help but hope Five could trust him with more. Friends didn't lie but even Will knew there might be some things Five would never share. Still he was hopeful and thankful he did the right thing for Five and that his summer might be changing for the better simply by meeting him.
Yeah this is completely new and the few that read this it does mean a lot. I am thinking about the romance element since Five has two candidates in this. Anyway this is just a wild idea I had and there will be more to come.
