Will woke up the next morning and thought last night had been all but a dream. There was no way he brought home a new friend that time traveled and that boy, well teen, wanted to stay with him. Maybe that could be a comic he could make and that would be a fun new project. However, he soon realized that it did in fact happen when he felt a bit stiff and was in a sleeping bag on the floor. He quickly got out of his sleeping bag to see if Five was fast asleep in his bed.
"Five?" Will called out.
He got up from the floor and saw that the bed was empty and made already. Will frowned a bit and thought he perhaps left, that was until he heard someone comment,
"Ah morning Will."
Five strolled in wearing a polo shirt and khaki shorts that he had to have borrowed. Will didn't even recall having a navy blue polo but it did look really nice on him. As he looked over Five he did notice something glaring; a tattoo of an umbrella on the left inner forearm. This was very curious and he wondered if Five's dad made him and all of his siblings get it. Perhaps this was their hero insignia but it wasn't the most discrete. He realized he was staring and that it was rude. He would ask Five about the tattoo some other time.
"Y-You're up already?" Will questioned.
Five chuckled and nodded.
"Father's sleep schedule is still kind of ingrained in me so I allowed you to sleep more. Hope you didn't mind that I was looking more into your room and I did my best to be quiet."
Will noticed Five was listening to a Walkman and eyes widened a bit since he recalled that inside was the mixtape his brother made him. His friends didn't get his tastes in music and was worried Five was going to judge him. Five did seem to be one to be very brash and he bit his lip as he tried to get his Walkman back but Five was one step ahead of him by teleporting behind him. Will eyes widened as Five was no longer in front of him but behind him and a playful smirk was clear on Five's face. Too cool Will thought and wondered and worried if Five would soon go back to his own time. Five pulled at the tape and examined it with a faint chuckle.
"This is a very good mixtape; The Smiths, Bowie, and especially The Clash. Man I love Should I Stay or Should I Go…kind of a bit of my song in ways. If I go there will be trouble and if I stay there will be double….story of my fucking life."
Will stood there shocked and couldn't help but smile.
"R-Really, you like The Clash?" Will asked.
Five could see the slight sparkle in Will's eyes and he could tell his friends didn't understand how great his music tastes were. Funny, the only one back home who understood his interest in The Clash was Klaus and he was the slacker and always wanted to get high. Still it was nice to have someone with similar tastes.
"Uh yeah, I do. Rock the Casbah, London Calling…so many good ones but like I said before, Should I Stay or Should I go, amazing."
Will could hear his mother calling him and 'Aidan' for breakfast and Five chuckled, lingering on Will's pjs.
"You might want to get dressed before I take all the pancakes." Five told him with a playful smile and left Will to get dressed.
Five walked into the Byers kitchen and he could already see Joyce setting the table for breakfast. She noticed him and she motioned him to come sit at the table. Five cracked a light smile as he got a plate and put on some pancakes for himself and poured himself some milk to go along with it. He noticed Joyce made eggs too and decided to take a small scoop for himself as well. Five didn't expect anything else until Joyce asked,
"Did you sleep well?"
Five seemed a bit taken aback at first and really didn't know what to think. His father never wanted to talk at meal times and they would eat in silence. Then again, there weren't any programs on either and Five needed to remember he wasn't home. It was a new, very new to speak during meal times and Five wondered if all families were supposed to do this.
"Oddly yes, wish I could have slept in more but…well my Father was very strict on how much we slept. Early to bed, early to rise."
"Even in the summers? Wow he never let you kids have a break huh. Well maybe you will learn how to enjoy your mornings while with us Aidan."
Five smiled a bit warmly as he put syrup on his pancakes. He could hear footsteps and at first, he thought it was Will. Instead, it was an older boy in a striped dress shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. He took one look at him and raised an eyebrow.
"Whose this mom?"
Joyce got up and made sure to clean the lipstick off his cheek with her thumb.
"This is Aidan Hargreeves and he's a new friend of your brother's. Be nice to him, okay. Now come on and have breakfast with us Johnathan."
Jonathan looked to Five and just gave him a neutral expression.
"I will eat at work mom, running a little late this morning."
"Alright then. See you later?" she asked.
He nodded as he headed out the door, giving Five one quick curious glance as he left.
"So that's Will's older brother, what does he do?" Five questioned.
"He's working as an intern at Hawkins Post with his girlfriend Nancy. He's been so busy lately that I hardly get to see him."
Will soon joined his mother and Five at the table, making his plate of pancakes and eggs. He looked over to Five and couldn't help but smile.
"Thanks for saving me some pancakes." he joked.
"I was very tempted Will since they look good. I don't even think Grace made them nearly as good if I were to be honest…Then again I can't recall when the last time she made pancakes was. Father was all about the finest foods and ones with high nutritional value."
"Grace?" Joyce questioned.
Five sighed since…how could he explain that Grace was their robotic mother figure…you know what, just say mom he thought and maybe just maybe he could share that with Will in private later. Oddly enough, he wanted to be honest with Will and perhaps share or maybe show off what his life was really like. He could find it amazing and perhaps find him cool, yet why did Five care so much about that. It's like he never gave a random shit about a fan or person, just the smug and righteous feeling of saving the world. Will was different though as if he wanted...acceptance and bonding with another person, a someone without powers.
"My mother of sorts. Really she took care of us when our father was busy. He only cared about us when it came down to our education and work in the community." Five spoke as he started to eat.
Will was silent for a bit since he knew Five had superpowers and wondered if 'community work' was actually superhero work. It wouldn't be that far off Will thought but he would ask him later tonight while they make Five his D&D character.
"So you boys have any plans today?" Joyce asked.
"Dustin's coming back home today mom so the guys, Max, and El are going to welcome him home."
Joyce looked at Five and he shook his head.
"It wouldn't be right crashing on a homecoming, especially since I think Mike hates me."
Will frowned lightly since Mike was coming on strong to the fact he made friends with Five. He was always a bit like this; especially last year with Max. Though he was oddly okay with El and actually made sense to Will seeing how Mike and El were dating. Still, Mike needed to get his head out of his ass and be a bit more welcoming.
"Mike does not hate you Aidan…he just hates the idea of me making a new friend that's all. You have to admit you did come off a little bit pompous in that uniform and he didn't like you telling him off."
Five chuckled and shook his head.
"More like he was worried I was going to hurt you when he had no cause to. Besides, Mike needs to understand that you're not a kid and you can make your own choices. That includes making a new friend. Besides, I'm quite the catch." Five laughed as he shoved a bite of pancake in his mouth.
Will nodded a bit and noticed Five had this cute dimple when he smiled. It was nice to see Five happier than he was last night. Joyce looked to Aidan and asked,
"What will you be doing Aidan? You can always come with me to work if you like or perhaps explore Hawkins. If you do decide to explore it, I want you home by dinner."
Five smiled lightly at Joyce's apparent care for him. He noticed the newspaper on the table and decided to take it for himself.
"I might want to look for a part time job. I'm going to need a few things and I don't want you to pour the little you have on me. You just allowing me to stay here is enough." Five told them.
Joyce's eyes widened and her face drooped slightly at the news. Aidan couldn't be any older than her own son and he was already talking about working, especially if he was working so hard back his with his own father. It was something she could understand but also thought Aidan would want to relax.
"What? You don't really have to do that Aidan. You're just a kid and you need to enjoy your summer while you still can. You can have plenty of time to work later in your life." Joyce encouraged.
Five sighed as he looked at the job listings in the want ads. He perused through them and saw an opening at an ice cream parlor at the mall to bus the tables. Hours were flexible and he would make okay pay. Plus, he could get free ice cream out of the deal which would be pretty sweet. There was the matter of age but he would be 14 in October so maybe whoever put in the ad can overlook his age.
"Yeah well I was already kind of working my ass off before coming here, least I can maybe get paid."
Will looked at the ad Five was looking at and he managed to chuckle.
"You busing tables, seems a bit beneath you doesn't it?"
Five grinned a bit but nodded.
"Yeah I know, but I need the money and honestly if a trained monkey can do it then surely I can do it and probably with gusto and style. Besides, can you imagine free ice cream as a perk? Delish."
Will laughed since Five was such an arrogant dork. But it was kind of nice for him to think of his mother since…work has been slow for her lately and he did worry if she was going to lose her job soon.
"Just be sure I get a discount…oh wait. I think Steve works there, he's a friend of Dustin's. Maybe he will do your interview so name drop mine and his name."
Good to know he thought as he looked at Joyce. She didn't look too thrilled at the idea but there was only so much she could do.
"Fine, but you're not working yourself to the bone. See if you can maybe cover some afternoons. You're only this age for so long and you should enjoy it." Joyce told him.
Five looked at Joyce and he could tell she did care about him. Odd, Grace was always programmed to have this look but Joyce was showing him that soft and paternal look. Joyce only knew him for a couple hours and yet she was worried about him working too much. He nodded and then he looked at Will.
"I know I will be with my other friends today but I will be home tonight. Maybe I can teach you D&D and we can make a character for you. I would love for you to join in campaigns. Something tells me you'd make a chaotic good character."
That made little sense to Five but he may understand more later tonight.
"Sounds like a plan. Maybe around dinner time, say anywhere from 6-7; 8 the latest? Don't keep me waiting Will, okay?"
Will nodded in agreement as Five finished up his breakfast and was on his way out.
"You can borrow Johnathon's old bike if you need to go places fast. Or I can drive you to the mall?" Joyce called out.
"It's fine Mrs. Byers, I could use the walk." Five lied as he got outside.
When he was outside he made sure there weren't other people outside as he went into the garage. He knew the 80s were a strange time and he didn't want people to notice his powers. Huh, funny how he can't really show off his powers since he always loved using them to screw around with bad guys or get ahead in races with his siblings. How times were changing he thought but he knew he could use his spatial powers if they were up and running. He focused and thankfully, he was able to blip into the mall; specifically a restroom so that he wouldn't draw too much attention. Now let's see if he could put on a charm and be pleasant so he could get a job at the ice cream parlor. It didn't take him long to find Scoops Ahoy and he kind of cringed at the title. Great, he was going to have to wear some stupid sailor uniform. Still Five couldn't complain as he entered the shop and saw an employee flirting with girls and failing to do his job competently. Man Five hoped he wouldn't be this way around girls since that would just be pathetic. When the girls left with their ice cream, Five approached the counter and couldn't help but chuckle.
"Wow, that was truly a pathetic display of courting…Steve. Like wow, you really blew it." Five said, reading the employee's name tag.
Steve raised an eyebrow at this kid and scoffed at him. It was bad enough he was getting ragged on by Robin and now this kid. He really must be off Steve thought with an annoyed groaned. He couldn't be too mad at the kid and he had a job to do.
"No one asked you, now what can I get you?" Steve expressed bitterly.
"Oh no ice cream yet and I doubt you should be greeting customers like that anyway. I'm here for the busboy position that was in the paper."
Steve thought this kid was joking and laughed. When he saw the kid gritting his teeth and glaring he stopped.
"Seriously? You're like 11 and the boss might be hesitant to let a kid be working with us."
Five rolled his eyes at Steve since he was clearly being a jerk.
"Look asshole, I'm almost 14 and I really need the money so that I don't have to rely on the Byers to support me. Plus if I really wanted a summer job, would I pick something that's so degrading; especially with this uniform."
Steve was going to go off on the kid but he did hear him mention Byers and he calmed down a bit. This kid knew Will and how the hell did he know him. Still, he would be civil since he's been through a lot with the Demogorgon and Upside Down type shit with Will, Dustin, and the others. He couldn't be so bad if he was friends with Will but he did notice the tattoo on the kid's arm and wondered what he was into.
"Wait so you're staying with the Byers, meaning you're not from around here."
"Wow there is a brain behind all that hair. But yes, I am. I hated my old man so much that I ran away. However I don't want to impose to much on them if I can help it, hence why I really need this job Steve." Five sighed.
Steve looked to the other employee, a female with blue eyes and brown hair and asked,
"What do you think Robin, give the boss a call and see if he will bite on taking this kid?"
Robin looked to Five and could see that she could maybe get along with him if he was already sassy and snarky towards Steve. Besides, she didn't want to clean up the tables or sticky floors of the parlor as much so why deny him work.
"I say we have him aboard. After all, we could use the extra hand. I just wonder if we have uniforms his size." Robin quipped playfully.
Five chuckled a bit and shook his head in disbelief. He knew these two were older than him but yet he kind of was reminded of his siblings. If anything, this job wouldn't be so boring and again, he would take advantage of the ice cream. Besides, a little bit of spending money would be pretty nice.
"I'm sure your boss will have something for me. I still think I will look better in it than you Stevie." Five teased.
Steve rolled his eyes as he went into the back to make a call to his boss. However he stopped in his tracks since he didn't have the kid's name.
"Ah wait hold on, what's your name. Need to tell it to the boss so he can have a name tag made." Steve asked.
"Aidan."
"Just Aidan?" Steve questioned.
"I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you." Five joked with a playful smile.
Robin managed to laugh at that and she then asked,
"Come on, give us a last name. Heck it could even be a fake one and we wouldn't know."
"Yet you would since you gave me that out. But fine since boss would need it…it's Hargreeves, Aidan Hargreeves."
Robin raised an eyebrow while Steve just went to the back to make the phone call to the boss. Five looked at Robin and he could sense a bit of dread building with her inquisitive looks at him. Reginald Hargreeves was kind of a known figure but he wondered if perhaps it was a blunder to use Hargreeves. It was bad enough yet not bad he was using Aidan as a cover but still he really couldn't have lied about his last name. Even in this new time he was clinging to his father and perhaps wanting his approval still.
"So Aidan, enjoying Hawkins so far?" Robin asked.
"It's quaint, I mean I was homeschooled for all of my life and my father kept me on a very tight leash. It would be nice to see what I've missed and perhaps have some fun."
"Ah so your father sounds like he was a pretentious asshole who wanted things his way and had these so high expectations of you?" Robin asked.
Wow she was a bit bright, first her and now Will…perhaps he should stop judging people but he was clearly smarter than everyone in this cow town. Why he got himself stuck here of all places Five wouldn't understand himself. He didn't want to admit his father was right and he didn't want to admit that he was missing him either.
"Sure was and I don't need him. I can make it on my own without him."
"Having the Byers should help though, I mean you have to admit you would be screwed without having a family to take your smartass in." Robin expressed with a light sassy smile.
Five scoffed and licked his top teeth cockily. He glanced at Robin with a slight smile and told her,
"Just be thankful you won't have to clean much of melted ice cream, chocolate syrup, or anything too gross. Besides I can do a lot more if needed and perhaps even better than you both."
"Be my guest, we get paid the same dingus so you can knock yourself out with the register and inventory at points. Just know what your basic description is okay? No one likes a show off."
Steve came back from the back home and looked at Five with a slightly annoyed expression.
"Normally the boss wouldn't take someone so young but he's desperate and you at least answered his ad. Can you start tomorrow?" he asked.
"Perfect, now what are my hours; don't want to worry Mrs. Byers or Will now."
"No more than 8 hours a day and 40 hours per week because this is the summer. If you remain afterwards expect them to be cut. You will be paid 3 dollars an hour."
Five did the math in his head and what he would make wasn't a lot but he could make that work. Plus this was the only job that would take him despite not being old enough. Kind of says something about the owner and boss of this location but it would work for him.
"So I get two days off essentially because of the labor laws, right?" Five asked.
"Yeah if you want to make your hours that way, sure. You will have to let us and the boss know when you want your days off though." Robin told him.
Five was working through in his head when he would want to work. If Joyce was right on one thing, he wanted to be sure he had fun this summer. He might get another place of work after the summer if by chance he's still stuck in time by then.
"Right so…for this week I will take off July 4th for obvious reasons and I will take off the Monday. I think my days off could be Wednesdays and Saturdays after this week that's coming up. Does that sound like a good plan?" Five suggested.
Steve and Robin looked at one another and they nodded.
"I will mention that to the boss. Now since you can only work eight hour days, your times will be 10am to 6pm. You will get a a paid 30 minute lunch break and two 15 minute breaks. Robin or I will be the ones to close up the ice cream parlor but you can help us open up if you're early. We will give you an orientation tomorrow on what your duties will be and your uniform." Steve stated a bit firmly.
"Right, like I need instructions on how to clean or scoop ice cream if I need to scoop. Anyway, thanks for putting a word in for me Steve. I will be here tomorrow."
"Yeah we will see you tomorrow, 10 sharp." Robin expressed.
Five nodded and couldn't help but think about how his life was changing and expanding. He was going to work in an ice cream parlor and be a temporary part of the Byer family. All this was temporary but at least he could be living while he learned the equation he needed to go back home. At least his life was getting a bit sweeter and he was thankful his time jump wasn't a total bust.
Did my best looking up labor laws and yes the boss of this Scoops Ahoy is breaking labor laws since Five is 13. I hope this story will slowly gain attention since I like to think crossovers like these can be fun and be interesting character scenarios if put in different environments. I do hope being are liking Will and Five's dynamic since no matter what that the fan fic is going, their relationship will have a focus in this. How much so and how it develops I am still debating. Reviews and feedback always helps but I do hope it's a nice read. More to come.
