El's eyes widened at Five's admission. I mean her having powers was understandable to some extent by those who knew, but Aidan or rather Five was different. How was what he said even possible? He wasn't from the lab but yet he had powers, powers of time travel. Being from the future had to be some kind of joke since they just finished a movie about time travel. Was he trying to be funny or was he making fun of her. She sat back in the booth and simply asked,
"Is this…a joke?"
Five sighed and shook his head. It would be hard on anyone he knew this. I was understandable El would find this not only hard to believe but maybe thought it was a cruel joke at her expense. He hadn't seen someone with powers that wasn't his family and he really wanted some sort of relationship with El, a relationship of trust. He was revealing his powers to her as a comfort and so they could be friends if anything.
"I promise you that I'm not joking. I'm really from the future and just made a mistake with my time jumps." he whispered.
Five wasn't backing down El thought and she looked over at him. He looked…serious and…nervous? If he knew about the future, he should be able to prove it shouldn't he El thought.
"Tell me about it."
"What?" Five questioned.
"The future. Tell me some things about it, things that haven't happened yet. You would know a lot about it wouldn't you?"
Five rubbed the back of his head in conflict.
"El…I really can't be sharing big things you know."
"Aidan…sorry I mean Five. I just want to know very minor things so I can believe you. Things that wouldn't be bad to know. The smallest things, please."
Five sighed and thought about what he could tell her. El then realized something, something that he slipped out earlier and that made her eyes widened.
"So you do know there will be two more Back to The Future movies? What are they like?"
"Yea, there will be two more to make it a trilogy. The sequel is where Marty and Doc need to stop Biff from messing up time. The third one is when Marty needs to save Doc from being killed in the Old West…yeah the third movie is a bit nuts and not as good."
El smiled a bit since those did sound like interesting plots. She thought for a moment and thought about another movie she wanted to ask about.
"Mike and the boys wonder about Ghostbusters…will there be another one?" she asked.
"Yeah in 1989, not as good but it will be decent enough." Five expressed.
El was a bit intrigued and she questioned,
"Is Madonna still making music in your time?"
"You mean if she's still popular…oh yeah she's going to get even bigger to a point we call her the Queen of Pop. She's not going to stop making music after the 80s. She is still making music."
El smiled at that and Steve soon came by with their banana boats. Five thanked them and they continued their conversations. She wanted to know more about Five since he was telling her his truths about his life. She was stunned about how he came to be; one of 43 children born to mothers who weren't pregnant before. He was adopted by his 'Papa' called Reginald Hargreeves and she was intrigued that Five wasn't alone.
"So you weren't alone but had siblings?"
Five nodded and went into a talk about siblings and their powers with her. El was a bit stunned with what his siblings could do. She thought his father only cared for their powers, which she was right. They continued their talk in hushed tones as to not alarm the people around them. Still, El felt a kinship to Five as she didn't have anyone like her to talk about her past or her powers.
"Your brother Diego sounds a bit like me, only he uses his powers for aiming weapons at others. Can he also push people back with his powers?"
"Kind of? He can control the trajectory of weapons he throws or manipulate objects like bullets back. It's not like a pure telekinesis like you possess."
El nodded and took another bite of her ice cream. Five looked less on edge and was smiling softly at her. His eyes glanced over her and gently took her other hand in his. She blushed a bit. Five stroked her hand and was thinking about just how El was very special. Her hand was soft and he kind of liked the way her hand fits, but yet it was still very much different from when he held Will's hand. He cast that thought out and figured love wasn't instant but he would grow to like her in that way, down to the hand holding.
They moved on to talking about their father's since El noticed when she slipped out her Papa, Five grew quiet as well. She glanced at the now covered arm Five had and remembered the tattoo. That was his own Papa's mark and he didn't seem to be a caring man like her new dad Hopper was.
"Do you think your Papa was a bad man?"
Five scoffed since he sure was.
"In what ways? In the normal, loving and caring way; pretty much yes he was bad. He never wanted to show us love and held it over us. Made us compete for his love and saw us more like numbers, hence why we had only numbers for names until Grace came into our lives. In terms of teaching us about our strengths, yes he was okay but also he wasn't awful since...well here I am. He was a good man he would have taught us all we needed and not hold us back. I'm guessing Papa is not the father you're with now?" he whispered.
El nodded and thought back to her own Mama and how Papa ruined her and took her from her mother.
"Papa hurt my Mama bad. He took me from momma. Momma isn't the same and got hurt from him. I mostly just saw the lab. It was like prison. He wanted my powers and wanted to use them for his goals. I was lonely…very lonely. I have a better dad now. He's strict but he cares and wants to protect me. And I have friends…so many friends. And now I hopefully will have you."
Five gulped a bit and he could feel her pulse and oddly her energy. Both were more similar than he thought. Sure he wasn't a lab rat for Reggie but at times that's pretty much what he was. Always testing their powers, only getting praise for their feats, withholding love if they displeased him. Instead of a lab, he had an academy but both were pretty much kept from socializing with others outside their 'family'. Even in sleep he was monitored and the academy for the most part was a prison he realized for the sole purpose of advancing their powers to be heroes to fulfill Reggie's goals.
Five at least had a home where El explained the horrors of her past. Isolation in a cell, horrible punishments, pushing her powers to brinks of exhaustion, perhaps even feigning love to make her perform. Five detested men like that, men like El's Papa and his own father. It's a wonder he and El weren't more emotionally damaged and scarred. El sniffled and felt tears trying to escape. Five leaned over and gently wiped the tear that was falling unto her cheek. He looked into those brown eyes and he felt a slight race in his heart.
"You're not alone anymore and I understand what it's like to be used and pushed. Believe me, you're secrets will be kept with me."
"And I will keep yours Five." she spoke softly.
They finished their ice cream and Five wanted to extend the ultimate trust to El. He took her hand and they darted to the employee room in the ice cream parlor. Steve exclaimed,
"Hey! Aidan what the hell!"
"I want to show her something Steve, relax! Just keep on being a good sailor alright" Five shot back sassily as he closed the door.
El was a bit confused at first as she looked to the back room with ice cream and a small table. Five chuckled and held on to her hand, giving her a slight playful grin. He channeled his powers and before El could even blink, she felt her whole body move. When she finally got a chance to look around, she saw she wasn't in the back room but behind a pillar in the food court. Her eyes widened immensely and she had to take double takes to see if they were in the food court. She was going to question how but then she remembered that Five had powers.
"I-I thought it was just time travel." she whispered.
Five grinned and shook his head, motioning where they were now in the mall.
"Nope, I can travel through space too, meaning I can go from one place to another in a blip of an eye. Pretty cool right?" he asked.
El couldn't help but laugh softly since it was clear Five was trying to show off. Normally she wouldn't like arrogance but on Five it was deserved and that was truly amazing.
"It is very cool. Should I show my powers? I'm really not supposed to show them because…well you know."
Five nodded in agreement. Yea from what Will told him, it would cause alarm and he didn't want El to be caught.
"Yeah, probably a good idea. Maybe in private you can and only if you want to. I don't want to force you to do anything. We've had enough of that for our lives."
El smiled softly and nodded, grabbing on to Five's arm. They walked around the mall until they spotted a photo booth. Five remembered doing this with Will once and that was fun. He wanted to have memories of El too. She motioned the photo booth to him and he said,
"Let's take some photos to commemorate this date. I would love to have this memory captured."
Five blushed since that sounded so lame but El gave his arm a light hug.
"Don't be embar…embarrassed. It's sweet you want pictures of me, of this date. I'm happy you want to have a picture of me." she spoke softly and a bit fragmented.
Five nodded as they went into the booth and took several photos. El and him did a lot of silly looking faces like having their tongues sticking out, bunny ears, and peace signs. Five was startled at a point when El sat on his lap for a photo with her arms around his neck. His heart raced as she looked into his eyes and cupped his cheeks. Was she really, here he thought nervously. When the camera flashed, she laughed and got off his lap.
"That will be a nice one to show your family if you see them. From what I heard, some of them wouldn't think you would go out with anyone?" she questioned.
"Y-Yeah, for sure. Klaus would be ecstatic though while I think Luther and Diego would say I am pretending or would lie about dating such a special and pretty girl."
El smiled at that and stroked her arm nervously.
"You think I'm pretty?"
Five nodded and took her hand, kissing it softly.
"Very." he mused.
Faint but it could just be loving the moment and not her. He really wished he understood relationships and girls better. They spent the rest of their date looking around the mall and just chatting about small things. El felt different being with Five and maybe Mike wasn't the only one who could make her feel good in the loving way. As they walked past a store, El lingered on a bangle set. Her eyes sparkled in interest and Five could tell El wanted them. He walked into the store with her and bought the bracelets for her. She smiled as she put the three chunky bangles on her wrist and gave Five a warm hug.
"Thank you."
"Your welcome El. Now what time is it since I don't want you to be home too late according to your dad and all."
El checked the nearby clock and her face fell a bit.
"I'm supposed to be home in 30 minutes but the bus is going to take longer to bring me home. He's not going to like that I am late at all." El sighed.
Five nodded and whispered,
"I can blip you home. It's no trouble at all."
El thought for a moment and she thought that would be a good idea. Plus, she might as well rip the band-aid and have Hopper meet Five. After Mike, she really needed to listen to her father and not hide things. Even getting him to agree to go to the mall was a compromise since he didn't want her around too many people.
"Okay well Hop's cabin is in the woods. You can blip us there and I will lead you where I'm supposed to go. But we should do your 'blip' not around many people." she suggested.
"No shit El, of course I'm going to be careful. I have too many people to care abut to have them worry if I'm caught by the government to test me."
El bite her lip nervously and flinched a bit at Five's words. He sighed and softened his face.
"I-I'm sorry. I was a bit blunt but I know to be careful."
"G-Good. I don't want to lose you."
Five and El left Starcourt Mall and walked quite a distance to an abandoned alley and he blipped them to the woods. El nodded and recognized the drop box Hopper used to leave Eggos for her a year ago. She took Five's hand as she led him to Hopper's cabin. Five had faced worse and yet still seeing El's father, the police chief, did make him feel nervous. He wondered what he would be like, a hardass he thought. When they got to the front door, it opened immediately and out came a tall man with a mustache and an intense scowl. Five let got of El's hand and offered his hand out to him.
"You must be the police chief and El's dad. I'm Aidan Hargreeves and it's nice to meet you."
Hopper raised an eyebrow but took the kid's hand anyway. He could tell this punk was trying to suppress a grin or smartass smirk but he didn't know the kid…yet.
"So you're the kid that Joyce took in. How are you liking Hawkins?"
Five shrugged as he pulled his hand back.
"It's a small little town but it's a nice one. I'm making some good friends including Mrs. Byer's son Will and I had a good time with El today."
"Right, movies and ice cream. I'm glad you kids had a good time. Just so you know, I love my daughter so much and I don't want her getting hurt. Also, I deserve respect from you and you will know that what I say will go, understand."
Gee how much of a prick was Mike if Hopper was already on his ass. He looked to El and she nodded, expressing,
"Aidan is good. He's kind, sweet, and cares. He had a hard life like I did and also had a bad Papa figure. Aidan won't hurt me and he's going to be a good person to me."
Hopper raised and eyebrow and asked,
"Define like you?"
Aidan sighed and he blipped next to Hopper, causing him to jump. He went to El's side and Hopper couldn't help but be shocked. Okay, this kid had powers and could relate to El. Still, he didn't have to fully like him but he could at least trust Aidan that he was going to understand El and treat her and him with some respect.
"Well…I'm glad you brought her home on time and that El looks to have had a fun time. Would you like to come in." Hopper asked, forcing a polite invitation into his cabin.
"I would like to but I promised Will I'd hang out with him after my date. Kind of don't want to ditch him you know?"
Alright this kid was better he thought and gave a light nod. El smiled and gave Five a hug.
"I'll call Will's house later tonight and we can talk?" she asked.
"Yeah I'd like that. We should do this again sometime."
El smiled and nodded. Both she and Hopper watched as Five blipped out of sight. Hopper looked at El and he couldn't help but still be a bit unnerved and blown by the new kid El was hanging out with. However, he seemed to understand why El was important because he had his own powers to hide.
"Aidan's a decent kid, hope he continues to be that way. Now let's get inside and you can tell me about him."
El nodded as she followed Hopper inside to talk about her date. He looked at some photos El and him took and he couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.
"I'm glad you had fun kid, but even if this doesn't become like what you had with Mike, keep him in your corner for as long as he's here, alright?" Hopper told her.
El nodded and wondered if Five was going to be like Mike was. In time she thought and Max told her that she would know once she kissed Aidan or rather Five's lips. She hoped there would be something more but she would still love for Five to be a part of her life. He understands her struggles and having a less than ideal home life before finding people that see them as people. They had trust and connections between them and hoped they would only get stronger.
