In the face of an opponent of overwhelming power, one can do nothing except fight with everything you have. You must also maintain the proper amount of distance. Moving too far away will allow the enemy to use their power at full capacity, while moving in too close will allow them to bring their power to bear on you without regard for others.

The Twelfth Move: Discovered Check Part Three
With Xenovia, Irina and Rossweisse
Xenovia was usually unmoved by the strength of an enemy, but the one who was floating down to the surface of the ziggurat in front of her was no ordinary enemy.
"Mei…Schwarzwald…" Irina gulped.
"To be precise, a golem with a copy of her memories and personality." 'Mei' answered. She was dressed in robes as she descended, but as soon as her feet hit the ground, they became a black outfit similar to that of Amakusa Chiaki's. In addition to that, there was a holster mounted at the small of her back that they couldn't see at this angle.
"Why are you here?" the former bodyguard to Odin demanded.
"I am the trial that you three must pass." The golem explained, "Defeat me and you have passed. Fall to me and you fail. This team has the most balance out of all of the ones created by Rias Gremory, so my original assigned me to be your opponent."
"Oh, goody." Irina grumbled as her hands tightened around her Holy-Demonic Sword.
The golem cocked her head at Xenovia for a moment. "Xenovia Quarta, former wielder of Excalibur Destruction and Durandal. Current wielder of EX-Durandal. In love with the current Sekiryūtei, Hyōdō Issei. How fascinating."
The bluenette blushed. "What has that to do with anything?!"
"Just that you are greatly more fortunate than your former partner here." 'Mei' nodded towards a surprised Irina, "Shidō Irina, former wielder of Excalibur Mimic and the childhood friend of the Sekiryūtei. Currently wields a mass-produced Holy-Demonic Sword and is the [Ace] of the Archangel Michael. Also in love with Hyōdō Issei and has almost Fallen 15 or so times since reuniting with him after having the [Brave Saint] system used to ascend into an angel."
"EH?!" Irina looked surprised, "How do you know that?!"
"I -or rather, my original- hacked Ajuka's surveillance system in the Underworld." The golem replied, "As I said, your friend Xenovia here is luckier than you are. She can give herself to the Sekiryūtei without worrying; whereas you will undoubtedly Fall is he so much as kisses you."
Irina's wings flickered between white and black for a moment as she imagined kissing Issei.
"See." 'Mei' giggled, "I have a question for you, [Ace] of Michael. If you were to Fall as a result of giving into your desires for him, would you blame Hyōdō Issei for it happening?"
"As if I would!" Irina declared after a moment, "The one who would be responsible would be me, for losing to my desires."
"True, but when things happen that we dislike, seldom do humans…reincarnated humans included…listen to reason." The copy of Mei pointed out, "Allow me to change the question. Would Falling as a result of giving into your desires for the Sekiryūtei be such a bad thing? Would you regret it?"
"Regret…it?" the girl frowned, "I…"
"This is a pointless line of questioning." Rossweisse interrupted impatiently.
"There is indeed a point to it, although not one that the 'Virgin Valkyrie' and 'Eternally Single Valkyrie' would be aware of." 'Mei' shot back without missing a beat.
"…guh!" the former Valkyrie collapsed onto her hands and knees with a dark cloud raining on her head.
"Ouch, low blow." Xenovia winced. It was not the first time that words had done that level of damage to Rossweisse, but that had been a verbal double tap.
"Your answer, Brave Saint?" the golem returned her attention to Irina.
The brunette let out a sigh. "If…IF I ever Fall as a result of losing to my desires for Issei-kun…I won't regret it. I have feelings for him that can cause me to Fall. All Reincarnated Angels have to battle with such emotions. But out of all the emotions that could make me fall, my feelings for Issei-kun are not something I would ever regret or be ashamed of."
Despite the white and black mask that covered the copy's face, Xenovia could tell somehow that Irina's answer had made the golem smile. "Well answered. Should you be victorious, Hyōdō Issei will no doubt be pleased by this. He is listening in, after all."
"…eh?"
"My original is watching the outcomes of these fights via several spells." The golem replied, "And Hyōdō Issei is awake now. He has been rather tiresome in threatening my original if any of you are harmed. He's also blushing right now."
"EEEP!" Irina crouched down and dropped her sword, covering her bright red face with her hands.
"…is your original as fond of teasing people as you are?" the wielder of EX-Durandal asked dryly, though she was blushing as well.
"Once upon a time, when training, research or Rating Games were not involved, yes." The golem answered as Rossweisse and Irina stood up again, one looking depressed and the other with pink cheeks, "But now the time for conversation is at an end."
Reaching behind her, the golem pulled a pair of tonfa from the holster and stood in a ready position. The tonfa were made of some sort of black metal and were covered in crimson red runes.
"These are Wail and Shriek, my tonfa." 'Mei' said with a casual air as she started spinning one lazily. It made a whistling sound as it spun. "They were an ordinary pair of tonfa until my original stole them from our 'father's' home after we killed him. To the victor goes the spoils, right?"
"Why kill your father? He stood no chance against you." Rossweisse asked.
"He abandoned my mother when she was pregnant with me." The golem said softly, "He tried to have us both killed and succeeded in murdering my mother. I would be dead if I had not awoken my Sacred Gear. Everything I did to him was his comeuppance for the life he lived and the acts of crime and cruelty he ordered done."
She started spinning the second tonfa, adding a second whistling sound to the first.
"My prized tonfa are not Sacred Gears, but they are very close to that level of power." The Mei golem stated, "Let us see how they stack up to a Holy-Demonic Sword and EX-Durandal, shall we?"
Then she attacked.
With Rias Gremory, Asia Argento and Gasper Vladi
"Haaaah!" the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess unleashed a large bolt of Power of Destruction at the golem that had the form of Morisato Natsuko, who dodged it with supernatural quickness.
Kawamura Aiko was wailing on Asia's defensive shield, the blond nun straining to maintain her shield in the face of a fully empowered [Twice Critical] user, while Gasper kept trying to trap Hibiki Shinobu in his [Forbidden Balor View], but she used magic that created clouds to block his line of sight to her and everyone else.
'This is getting us nowhere.' Rias thought in frustration, "Asia, Gasper! Fall back!"
As they did so, the Gremory Heiress hastily constructed a magic circle in her mind. Devil magic revolved around the use of these constructs, as it allowed a Devil to cast any spell that they wanted in seconds, so long as they had memorised a magic circle that allowed them to accomplish that spell.
Most of Rias' magic circles were designed for fairly precise uses of her magic, warranted as the Power of Destruction lived up to its name and she disliked causing collateral damage. In this instance, her preferred strategy wasn't going to work, however, so she decided to go the other way entirely.
"Let's see you three handle this!" she yelled as Gasper and Asia made it into her shadow. She cast her new magic circle that appeared in the air above the ziggurat and spat down a rain of orbs of condensed Power of Destruction the size of grapefruits. The only place not struck was the area immediately around Rias and her two Peerage members.
The three golems tried to dodge, but the rain was too thick and fierce to avoid completely. When a panting Rias ended the spell, all three of the golems had been damaged by it to some degree. Natsuko was missing her right leg, Shinobu was covered in scratches and cuts, while Aiko was hurt the worst out of all of them, with a hole in the middle of her abdomen, which was becoming larger and larger by the second.
What was rather disturbing was the smirking expressions of the three golems.
"Now you have harmed us, you will face our full might!" Natsuko declared, "For Nee-sama!"
"For Nee-sama!" the other two declared in unison.
"[Balance Break!]" All three declared.
Natsuko's [Hunter's Chance] transformed into a Japanese bow and the ten hooded men appeared around their summoner.
Shinobu was covered in shining golden armour that was similar to but different from the Scale Mail of the Balance Breakers of the [Boosted Gear] and [Divine Dividing]. It lacked the draconic attributes and was the colour of molten gold, seeming to be made of liquid gold and shining with an inner light.
Finally, the blue fingerless gauntlet of the [Twice Critical] sprouted armour on the fingers and then grew up the arm it was on and down the other one.
"[Raiding Rangers of the Queen]!"
"[Future Reflex Shining Armour]!"
"[Arms of the Valiant Blue Dragon]!"
"Oh…this is going to be problematic." Rias whispered as she pooled more Power of Destruction into her hands.
"I don't have the time to fight carefully!" Aria grinned as she clenched her fists, "Entering [Valiant Dragon Final Form]!"
A blue aura glowed around her and the phantasmal image of a two-headed dragon appeared over her body, with her eyes glowing deep blue along with it.
"Shinobu-chan!" she called, leaping into the air. The golden armour was in motion even before the [Pawn] Golem had said a syllable. Spinning in the air, the [Future Reflex Shining Armour] performed an overhead kick that Aria landed on and used the impetus of in order to rocket towards a startled Rias.
"[Dragon Impact]!" the [Pawn] yelled as she drew her arms back.
"FALL!" the Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess roared in a fury. She was sick and tired of these damn fake golems! Rias unleashed several enormous bolts of her Power of Destruction right at Aria's flight path. She knew that right now, [Valiant Dragon Final Form] made Aria just as strong as Issei was in the basic [Boosted Gear Scale Mail], so she couldn't underestimate the [Pawn] golem.
The first bolt was punched through, as was the second. The third pushed her back before it was destroyed, but the fourth and fifth had been fired almost as a single shot, so they were too much for the golem, what with the damage she had already taken.
"MEI-NEE-SAMAAAAAAA!" the golem of Kawamura Aiko screamed as she dissolved first into ashes, then even the ashes turned into nothing, leaving a single thing behind, unaffected by the Power of Destruction: a gem about the size of a marble, covered in the [Barrier of Solomon: Devil] shields. In a flash, it vanished, to where, Rias had no clue.
"That's one down." She panted. In a blink, the golden armour of Hibiki Shinobu was in front of her, fist cocked back.
"Why you bitch!" the golem snarled and sent a powerful strike through Rias' hastily erected shield and right into her gut.
"GUH!" the crimson-haired girl choked out as she was sent flying from the force of the blow, landing on her back with a thud several feet away.
"Rias-nee-sama!" Asia cried in fear.
"Buchou!" Gasper wailed.
"I-I'm fine!" Rias gasped as she struggled to her feet.
"Let's see how you like a taste of your own medicine, Rias Gremory!" Natsuko spat out as she drew back her bow before aiming straight up.
"[Million Rain]!" she ordered and the ten Rangers followed suit, all eleven of them firing arrows up into the air that exploded, raining down countless arrows of fire, wind, darkness, gravity and a host of other arrows on the entire pinnacle of the ziggurat.
The three Devils were barely able to get their shields up in time to block them, with Asia being driven to her knees by the force of each arrow striking her shield. It was actually rather impressive that she was able to maintain the shield with it being such a short amount of time since she had learned how to cast one.
Gasper fired several blasts of fire from one hand at the archers, destroying one and damaging another, making Natsuko glare at him.
"What the hell?! That was human magic!"
"I'm not very g-good at devil magic, and my Sacred Gear is hard to control, so I learned human-style magic to o-offset that!" he replied, "Now stop firing!"
This time he fired ice magic at them, sending a barrage of icicle spears at the Rangers. They were intercepted by Shinobu, who smashed them with punches and kicks.
"That armour does more than read the lines of the future…it also boosts your strength and speed, doesn't it?" Rias snarled as she stood up again, wincing at the pain in her gut.
"Correct. To be precise, I receive power-ups depending on how many people are around for me to predict the future movement of." Shinobu stated, "With five people, myself included, my strength and speed is multiplied by three."
"Balance Breakers are so irritating." The Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess grumbled, "And why wasn't this in the information Azazel gave us?"
"We never gave Amadeus or the Bael Family completely accurate information on us." Natsuko answered her, "Our loyalty was with the one who gave us hope, the one who saved us from despair…with Mei-nee-sama. She told us to only reveal a portion of our strength if at all possible, even with the Balance Breakers, so we obeyed her."
"Why did she betray you?!" Rias demanded, tears in her eyes. She understood now what Issei had been saying the previous day. The Mei who had saved these girls and the Mei who had slaughtered them were just too different.
"That isn't our story to tell." Shinobu shook her head, "We do not possess those memories, as we are only golems designed to fight. What we do know is that you seek to harm Mei-nee-sama. That is something that we cannot allow."
"Just as I will not allow your sister to tear my beloved one from my arms!" The Gremory Heiress snarled, an aura of power surrounded her, "I will not allow it, not again!"
"Then prove your determination, Heiress of the Gremory!" Natsuko shouted, her Rangers leaping to surround the three of them, "Defeat us and move on, if you can!"
"As you wish!" The crimson-haired Devil snarled. She hadn't just been talking for the sake of it. She had used the time to throw together another new magic circle in her mind, one that she had discussed with Akeno during their training. She wasn't as nervous about using it as the last one, but she would need to rest after using this one.
"[Destruction Burst]!" she shouted as she invoked her spell. The magic circle appeared over her head and created a dome of Power of Destruction around her, Asia and Gasper before it grew from that size to encompass the rest of the ziggurat in less than five seconds. The wave of Power of Destruction that followed the initial blast swamped and engulfed the two golems, who, despite their defences, started to crumble.
"Mei-nee…-sama…" Natsuko whispered as her body was consumed by the powerful Devil Magic, "I…failed…you…!"
"It's…your…victory…" Shinobu, her Balance Breaker shattered, told Rias, who was slumped on her hands and knees from the exertion, with Asia and Gasper crouched on either side of her in concern, "But…if you…had this…much trouble…with…us…you'll never…be…able to…match…Mei…-nee-…samaaaa!"
The two golems representing the Peerage of Mei Schwarzwald were consumed by Rias' Power of Destruction before it too vanished, leaving behind the two jewels that seemed to be the golem cores. They too vanished in a flash.
"That…was exhausting." Rias said with a wan smile at her two anxious [Bishops], "I shouldn't have been so arrogant to presume to think I could protect both of you at once without exhausting myself."
"You have learned the lesson well, Rias-ojou-sama." A familiar voice said and the three looked up to see a masked face floating in a screen before them.
"Mei…!" the Gremory Heiress growled.
"What is most important for a [King] to keep in mind is that if they fall, so too does the rest of the Peerage." Mei continued, "You are especially headstrong and have caused your side to lose at least once because of your recklessness and pride. During your Rating Game against Raiser Phenex, if you will recall."
Rias flinched at that.
"It is good that you have realised your flaw. That realisation will serve you in good stead in the future." The Stray Devil remarked, "This Ziggurat is conquered. Well done."
With that the screen vanished and, above the ziggurat, a holographic image of the Gremory Rose blazed into being, rotating on its vertical axis.
'What is her game?' the Gremory Heiress wondered as Asia used her Sacred Gear to heal her, 'Ise was right. There's something unusual going on here…'
With Kiba Yuuto and Tōjō Koneko
"NO!" Maya snarled, "The Gremory Heiress defeated all three of our sisters?! Alone?!"
The Ōkami Hanyou backed off from pressing the Nekoshō when she saw the Gremory Rose blaze into existence above one of the other ziggurats. Arisu didn't look happy either, but continued to use her natural abilities as a Yuki-Onna Hanyou to bombard Kiba with icicles.
"Muu…Natsuko-chan…Aiko-chan…Shinobu-chan…" she grumbled.
"Looks like Buchou stepped up." The creator of the Holy-Demonic Sword observed.
"Mmm." Koneko nodded, "We have to hurry. Issei-sempai is in danger."
"Right. [Sword Birth]!" Kiba stabbed his sword into the ground, causing blades to erupt edge-first out of the ground around him in a wave, forcing Maya and Arisu to retreat.
"Thrice-bedamned offence-oriented Sacred Gears." Maya growled, "Fine. You've been using a Balance Breaker from the start, so…[Twilight Healing Balance Breaker]!"
In a flash, eight more rings appeared, one on each of her fingers, and a pair of earrings appeared on her ears. Wounds opened up on her body, which would make her bleed ordinarily, but as she was a golem, that wasn't an issue.
"[Stigmata]!" the Ōkami Hanyou snarled, "Now we'll see who comes out on top! You all have over-relied on your [Bishop's] [Twilight Healing], so defeating you will be far easier than before!"
"I thought you were just a combat golem?" Kiba asked with a blink of confusion.
"Muu…how rude." Arisu huffed, "As if our Aneki would make copies of her sisters just to fight! We have most of our memories from when we were alive. Only the most painful of our memories are even muted, let alone sealed away."
She gestured and sent a barrage of icicles at Kiba, but he modified the Holy-Demonic Sword in his hand into a new form that sucked in the ice as if it were a vacuum cleaner.
"Hn?" one delicate eyebrow rose at this.
"Sorry, but my [Ice Eater] will be stopping you cold." The bishōnen smirked.
"We'll see about that. [Fangs of the Blue Dragon]!" Arisu declared with narrowed eyes. The necklace appeared around her neck in a flash of blue light.
"[Crown of Thorns]!" Maya snapped. In an instant, the wounds around her head shone and vanished, reappearing on Kiba's head, blood seeping from them. The swordsman winced in pain, but compared to the time he'd had his arm chopped off by the Demon Sword Gram, it was a minor annoyance at most.
Koneko leapt in and slammed in some powerful punches and kicks using her [Rook] piece's strength to drive the Ōkami Hanyou back. Out of all of Rias' Peerage, Koneko had had the least amount of wounds healed by Asia's [Twilight Healing] and was thus the best choice to face Kurozuka Maya.
Arisu send a wave of pure cold and ice against Kiba, who sprouted a triple line of [Ice Eaters] to absorb the oncoming ice wave. The Yuki-Onna was frowning as no so much as a minor amount of frost made it past the line, although several of the blades were overloaded by the sheer amount she had sent.
"Another stalemate." She grumbled. Like before, Kiba could block her attacks, but not attack back.
"[Balance Break]." Kiba said simply as several dragon knights appeared around him, "[Glory Drag Trooper]."
"A Subspecies Balance Breaker similar to Natsuko's [Raiding Rangers of the Queen]?" Arisu cocked her head to one side before she noticed something, "Ah, your swords are just ordinary Holy Swords now!"
"Yup. That's the limitation when you have multiple Sacred Gears." Kiba freely admitted, "I can only use one Balance Breaker at a time, either [Sword of the Betrayer] or [Glory Drag Trooper], but not both. Plus I can only create Holy Swords while using [Blade Blacksmith's] Balance Breaker. Still, the Holy Swords ought to be enough to hold you back, while my soldiers attack you."
Using Kiba's attribute as a [Knight], speed, the troopers launched themselves at Arisu, who raised a wall to block them from attacking, but Kiba threw several [Ice Eater] Holy Swords at the wall to carve a path through for them.
The look on Arisu's face was priceless as her ice was absorbed into the swords. She tried to raise another one, but nothing happened.
"Oh no! I've used most of the water in the area!" she exclaimed, "[Balance-!"
"[Gram]!" Kiba snarled, charging in and bisecting her in one cut with the Demonic Emperor Sword he had pulled out of the air.
"Ane…ki…!" she wailed before vanishing, dissolving into dust and leaving only the core behind.
Kiba hurriedly put Gram back in its own dimensional pocket. He had only recently gotten the weapon from the Hero Siegfried and Kiba preferred not to use it, as the damn thing drained his demonic energy way too quickly, to the point that he really felt sympathy for Issei-kun's problem with [Welsh Blaster Bishop].
"ARISU!" Maya wailed, "Damn you, damn you, damn youuuuu!"
She leapt at Kiba with a roar of fury, forgetting her Sacred Gear and everything else in her rage and desire to avenge her sister. Koneko took advantage of this by transforming into Nekomata mode, summoning up the largest ball of bluebell flames she had ever summoned using Yōjutsu and unleashed it at her open back.
The Ōkami Hanyou screamed in pain as she was engulfed in pale blue flames, her body being consumed by them. Still, she staggered forwards, endlessly attempting to catch Kiba.
"My…sisters…no…! I'll…kill…you…!" she rasped out before collapsing, the fire consuming her body completely.
"What was that?" Kiba asked shakily. He had never seen anyone so determined to kill someone even as they were dying. And this was a golem…!
"Maya-chan was an Ōkami Hanyou." Mei Schwarzwald's face popped up as she spoke, "Even being a half-blood, she still had a lot of the traits of a wolf in her, including a strong sense of pack loyalty. Hurting one of her sisters in front of her was akin to waving a red rag in front of a bull. It's a good thing I removed the golem core before she collapsed. Yōjutsu isn't something I had planned to deal with. Congratulations. Victory on this ziggurat is yours."
The screen with her face vanished and another Gremory Rose appeared to join the first.
"Whew…think we've earned a break?" Kiba asked his younger fellow Peerage member.
"Mm-hmm." Koneko agreed, her ears and tail disappearing as she exited Nekomata mode. Using Yōjutsu was still tiring for her, even more so than Senjutsu, and such a large amount of it being channelled at once was doubly tiring.
"C'mon guys…Issei-kun is waiting for us." The Sole Survivor of the Holy Sword Project whispered as he gazed at the other two ziggurats.
Earlier
Throne Room, Palace of the Maō
Sirzechs Lucifer stared stonily at the sight of his adorable younger sister being punched in the gut by a golem. He barely managed to restrain his urge to break through Mei's anti-teleportation defences and tear the place apart.
The other three Maō were sitting on their thrones as well, although Falbium was snoring. Laziest Devil in existence.
Azazel strode in with a serious look on his face. "We have a Problem."
Sirzechs could feel a headache coming on. "What now?"
Fiddling with his artificial arm, the former Governor-General of the Grigori displayed a picture of Mei Schwarzwald holding the levitating Evil Pieces of her Peerage.
"I had my arms built in camera record this when we confronted Mei at Kuō Academy." He said grimly, "How many pieces do you see here?"
"A full Evil Piece set." Serafall answered at once.
"Yes…including a [King] piece." Azazel said grimly, "Something that is supposed to be sealed away."
Any Devil who earned the right to be the [King] of a Peerage were under one of the Four Maō. In each of their territories, there was a large monument that acted as the [King] piece. All one had to do to become a [King] was to receive permission and touch the monument. The [King] pieces initially created by Ajuka Beelzebub millennia ago had been sealed away for fear of misuse.
Ajuka pulled a palmtop out of nowhere and tapped away at it for a moment. "All of the [King] pieces I created are still sealed away, which begs the question of where Mei got her hands on that one."
"Did Amadeus Bael have the knowhow regarding the Evil Pieces to replicate one?" the Fallen asked with a frown.
"No. I am the only person who knows the final process of the creation of Evil Pieces." The Mao Beelzebub denied.
"What about figuring it out? He was a bright lad, after all." Sirzechs pointed out.
"It took me a hundred and fifty years to figure out how to create Evil pieces stably." Ajuka shook his head in denial again, "While Amadeus was very smart, he wasn't a true genius like Mei…like Mei is."
The four awake powerful supernaturals exchanged looks before Serafall spoke softly, "Mei very much is a genius and she would have had quite some time to examine each of the spare pieces that Amadeus used. Could she have figured out enough to create a [King] piece?"
"Not the powers or functions that the sealed [King] pieces have." Ajuka answered slowly, "The form, yes. But why would she? A [King] piece such as that is useless; it offers no advantages to anyone, least of all her."
"What," Sirzechs said distantly, "if she made it at Amadeus' request? What if that was part of a deal she made with him to recruit one or more of the Peerage members? I recall him being highly reluctant to add Amakusa Chiaki and Kawamura Aiko, only to all of a sudden accede and add them."
"That…" Azazel shook himself before continuing, "Okay Ajuka, would Amadeus have been smart enough to add the [King] piece to himself at some point?"
"Yes." The Devil Scientist said instantly, "I have no doubt that he could have."
"This situation is becoming tiresomely complex." Sirzechs growled, "Why would Amadeus ask for the creation of a powerless Evil Piece? Why would he add it to himself despite its powerlessness? And why would Mei take his piece after she killed him? It's clear from everything she has said and done that her only concern was and is her sisters."
"I can search Amadeus' castle." Ajuka said with a slight frown, "I am very much surprised I haven't been asked to do so before now, actually. Amadeus had Mei's help in refurbishing his castle over the years, so one of the few people smarter than she is should have been asked to have a look over of the place."
"You were up to your eyeballs in experiments." Sirzechs reminded him, "One time when a maid tried to give you your lunch, you tried to blast her for interrupting. It was lucky you had given her a device to teleport her out of the way of you doing that before you started."
Ajuka looked somewhat embarrassed.
"I'll join you on your search." Azazel said grimly, "Something about this situation stinks to the high heavens and beyond and I aim to find out exactly what is going on here."
