It was unusual for a rabbit warren to have a female leader, but Chief Rabbit McDaniels had won her position by level headedness and a certain self-contained detachment, quite unlike the impulsive behavior of most rabbits. She was extremely stubborn and stuck by her own decisions extensively.
When Stan, Kyle, and Butters came into her burrow, she greeted them with a cold politeness. "Ah, Randy Marsh. It is Randy, isn't it?"
"Uh… no," said Stan. "I'm Stan. Randy's my dad's name."
"Of course. My mistake. What can I do for you?"
"Well," Kyle said, "We just found out that some humans are gonna destroy this warren so they can build some houses on the site."
The Chief Rabbit frowned at him. "And how could you know a thing like that, Nigel?"
"My name's Kyle," said Kyle.
The Chief Rabbit waved an irritated paw. "Don't correct me anymore, will you?"
"I had a dream!" Butters piped up. "I saw this whole field covered in blood! Rabbit blood!"
"A dream…" she repeated. "As in, you were asleep and you saw something?"
Butters nodded his head frenetically. "Yeah."
"I'm sorry, but this just sounds like a bunch of hraka to me. I don't put much stock in dreams."
"There's more to it than that," Stan broke in. "We saw the sign they put up. It said, 'This ideally situated estate…' Well, I can't exactly remember all the words, but it meant people are gonna build a bunch of houses here."
"Well, what do you want me to do about it?" the Chief Rabbit demanded.
"We gotta leave!" Butters was hopping up and down now. "Go away! All of us! Before they get here an' start plowin'!"
The Chief Rabbit forced a smile onto her face. "Let's just think about this a moment, shall we? It's May, isn't it? Everyone's busy and most of the rabbits are enjoying themselves. No elil for miles. No illness, good weather. And you want me us all to go traipsing across the country to goodness knows where because young Oleo here had a scary dream?"
"If we stay here, we'll die!" Kyle yelled angrily.
"You're just trying to scare me," she said. "No one can destroy this warren. It's always been here, and it always will be."
Kyle turned back to his friends. "Come on, guys. I told you she wouldn't listen. There's nothing more we can do."
Dejectedly they made their way out of the Chief Rabbit's burrow.
"What are we gonna do, fellas?" Butters said when they were outside.
"Well," Stan answered, "She may not want to leave, but she can't stop us from leaving."
"When do you want to go?" Kyle asked. "Right now?"
Stan thought it over. "How about tomorrow night? That way, we'll have all of tomorrow to convince as many rabbits as we can to come with us…"
