"So what should we do?"

"Huh?"

Shouldn't she be the one to decide that?

"I've never taught anyone before. I don't use knives either," Aiz told him while striking strange poses with his shortsword that he had named 'Ultimate Justice Fighting Heroic Destroyer of Doom.' A solid name if you asked him. Back to the task at hand, Bell and Aiz were meeting on top of the north wall for the first training section. The first thing he had learned from the lesson was that Aiz was a bit of an airhe-

Bell raised his arms to block but to no avail as Aiz's kick smashed through his block and connected with his cheek. The world spun around him as he flew through the air. He landed with a thud, the world going dark.

Oh. She had used too much strength. Being a new level 6, she had yet to adequately adjust to her new level. Aiz walked up to Bell and crouched down, poking at his cheek. It was soft, just like his hair. Speaking of which, lying on the ground must be uncomfortable. Which meant that she had no choice. Yes, it was a necessity.

Bell woke up to a familiar sensation beneath. And a familiar sensation of a hand moving through his hair. As it finally clicked to him, Bell jumped up in embarrassment.

"Aiz-san, why was my head in your lap again!"

"Because it's soft?" She said while getting up.

Why was that a question? Bell sighed while blushing. He was still a teenager without much experience with the opposite sex. It didn't seem like Aiz was going to stop, so he would just have to get used to the embarrassment.

"Let's try fighting," Aiz said while lifting up the sheath of her sword. Bell immediately held up both of his weapons.

Aiz nodded in response. "Good. Always be prepared to react immediately."

She stepped in, swinging down towards his head. He blocked it with both knives but the weight was too much for him, forcing him to jump back. Aiz immediately capitalized, landing a jab in his stomach.

"Don't try to take the strike head-on if the opponent is stronger than you," she explained while giving him a moment to recover.

Bell coughed a bit before going back into ready position and charging Aiz. He swung his right arm sideways, meeting Aiz's sheath as she blocked the strike. Suddenly, Bell stopped resisting and used her momentum to spin the other way and swung with his other knife. Surprised by the move, Aiz swung a bit too hard, knocking Bell out. Laying his head on her lap, she contemplated what had just happened. It took him just one swing to use what she said and improve. Was it his ability to learn that allowed him to get stronger that fast?

They resumed sparring after Bell got up, Aiz occasionally giving him simple tips and him trying to apply them. The end result of each spar was always the same: Bell getting knocked out. This continued until the sun had fully risen above the horizon, marking the end of the training session as they both had places to be.

"Thank you Aiz-san, I'll see you tomorrow!" The beat-up Bell said while waving his hand as he left. Aiz watched him go before turning to look at the sun, her level 6 eyes not burning from the sun's rays. A smile graced her face as her chest felt a strange warmth.

She had fun and was looking forward to the next training session.

Bell arrived at the fountain where they were supposed to meet and spotted her waiting for him.

"Good morning Lili. Sorry to keep you waiting."

"Good morning Bell-sama! Umm, why is Bell-sama so beat up before even going to the dungeon?"

He hadn't even thought of that. The training sessions with Aiz were supposed to be a secret and he didn't have any excuses prepared. He had no other options.

"Ahaha, don't worry about it," he laughed it off. He obviously didn't do a very good job and she eyed him suspiciously. Thankfully, she did not pry any further.

Their plan was to stick to the first four floors for a bit to get used to working together, so it came as a surprise when they tore through those floors in no time at all. Lili would make calls and watch his back as he sliced most of the monsters in one swing. Not having to worry about the remains of monsters, not having to carry many items, and utilizing Hellfire for movement made these floors feel like child's play.

"Bell-sama is amazing! Lili cannot believe that you have only been an adventurer for a month. It must be the difference in talent," Lili mumbled the last part self-deprecatingly.

"No, I am not as talented as you think. There were circumstances that forced me to get stronger. As I am now, this is not nearly enough." After all, his skill meant that he was basically cheating compared to others. That was why he needed to work harder, to make it seem like he earned it.

Lili would normally think of this as humble bragging, but his expression said otherwise. It wasn't a matter of being humble. He genuinely thought lowly of himself. She wanted to say something, but couldn't find the right words. Perhaps because it hadn't even been a day since they met.

"Anyways, I was wondering what familia are you from and what is it like?" Bell asked, changing the subject.

Lili took a moment before answering. "The Soma familia. Lili is weak, so nobody wants her in their party."

Bell stopped and looked back at her. She was looking down at the ground. Being shunned by someone's own familia, he couldn't believe it. Wasn't there anything that could be done?

"Would you like to switch to my familia?" He was sure his goddess wouldn't mind. They had been trying to grow anyways.

Lili was stunned for a moment but then shook her head with a sad smile. "Bell-sama is too nice. Lili doesn't deserve it. Besides, the Soma familia requires a large fee to leave."

He would talk to his goddess about this. For now, it would be better to focus on the dungeon.

In the end, they decided to go until the ninth floor. Despite the faster spawn rates and the stronger monsters, Bell was far superior in terms of stats. He took some hits from messing up some parries and counters due to his poor technique, but his armor allowed him to come out unscathed. Lili did not enjoy the fact that he chose to take hits though.

"Lili still believes that it is better to completely dodge. It would save potions." What they were talking about now was how Bell fought. While she was initially, and truthfully still was, extremely impressed, she was not going to hesitate on calling out things that concerned his safety. It was a first for her to do that, to care about an adventurer. She was determined to not lose the one hope that she had found in her miserable life.

She also preferred saving money.

"I agree that it is probably better to dodge when possible, but I need to learn how to fight without being able to do that as well. As monsters get stronger and faster, it might not be possible to dodge. Plus, good counters can lead to openings," he explained.

"So Bell-sama is saying is that it is better to practice now against weaker monsters to prepare for the future."

"Yeah."

It made sense, but it did not stop making Lili feel uneasy.

As they made their way to the guild, Lili thought more about his offer from before. With Bell being the nice guy he was, she expected him to give her around thirty percent of the valis, more than what she deserved as a supporter. With how well the day had gone and the unusual amount of drop items they had gotten, she wondered if it was in the realm of possibility to meet the quotas and make enough extra to pay the fee for leaving in a couple of months.

"Hey kid, I see you brought a friend this time. So how many jack birds did you catch this time?" Asked the man at the counter. He was looking at Bell.

Jack birds? What were they talking about? She had never seen one, let alone catch one in all of her years in the dungeon.

"I just got lucky that time," Bell replied.

"Suuuuuuuuure. Well, I suspect that you won't be needing those chickens to make that much anyways with how fast you're going. Between you and me, I made a bet with some coworkers that you're going to break records and you know what they said? They bet a million valis each that a kid like you won't be anything special. They don't know what they signed up for!" He said with a hearty laugh.

"I'll try my best," Bell replied, scratching his head from embarrassment.

They seemed to get along quite well. Lili felt a tiny bit jealous.

"Anyways, here you go. 220 000 valis."

Her jaw dropped. Even a quarter of that would be over fifty thousand!

Bell simply took half of it and handed it to her as if it was the most natural thing in the world. She did not even question it until they were outside of the building when she realized it.

"Wait wait wait. Bell-sama, are you sure this isn't a mistake?"

"I was able to hunt a lot more efficiently with you there, so the amount makes sense."

That wasn't what she was talking about, and even if it was, there was still something wrong there.

"Lili means how you split the money. Supporters don't get fifty percent."

"Well, the amount earned doubled with you there. So a fifty-fifty split makes the most sense to me," he explained his reasoning.

"But Lili is a supporter! Sup. Por. Ter. Adventurers are the ones who do all of the work. Supporters aren't worth much."

"Who decides that?" Bell asked with a serious expression.

She couldn't answer.

"An employer decides how much to pay their employee. I am employing you right now, so I am the one who decides how much to pay you. Let's leave it at that shall we?" He was smiling again.

He was too naive. People would definitely take advantage of him. She was both happy and worried. If they had met differently, perhaps she would've been the one taking advantage of him. It hurt to think of that though. For now, she needed to make sure to keep an eye on him and make sure that others don't scam him. It was the least she could do.

She sighed and nodded as they began walking. A small smile graced her lips.

Opening the door to their home, he found that his goddess was already home. An early shift?

"Welcome back Bell-kun. How was today?" She sounded worried. That was not surprising, considering his recent luck.

"It went great. Lili is an amazing supporter."

"I see, that's great." She patted the bed. She must have wanted to make sure of it herself.

Lying on his back, he heard a sigh of relief as soon as his status was updated.

"By the way Kami-sama, would you be fine with Lili joining our familia?"

"Huh? Isn't she already in a familia?" She asked, confused.

He explained the situation to her, about how Lili was treated by her familia and the aura of despair that had surrounded her while talking about it. He could tell that a lot had been left unsaid and he couldn't leave her like that.

"As expected of Bell-kun, not hesitating to save others. But first I need to ask. Do you have a plan? I won't let you do something as reckless as making an enemy of a familia," she said seriously.

"Money. I heard that some familias, including the Soma familia, do this."

"Umm Bell-kun? I know you make more money now but we aren't exactly out of the red yet."

That was wrong. They had a decent amount of money now, was she not aware of it? Oh right. He hadn't gotten a chance to tell about the jack bird.

"Abou that… We have over 1.5 million valis now. I actually caught a jack bird."

He could see her head spinning trying to process that they weren't poor anymore and actually had a decent amount of money.

"Well, you were the one who earned it so I can't complain about how you spend it. If you think this is the right thing to do, I won't stop you." She knew it was pointless to stop him anyways. And as the goddess of the hearth, she would welcome the supporter who needed a family. That was just how the Hestia familia was.

"Thank you Kami-sama." He pulled his shirt down and prepared some money. The sooner the better.

As she watched him go, she questioned her judgment. They wouldn't have the space nor the money if he decided to keep taking in people.

He recognized the place. It was, after all, one of the many places that rejected him when he first came to Orario. The familia home in question was decently large, though nothing compared to the Twilight Manor or the Folkvangr. The place in question was where the Soma familia resided.

Walking up to the gate, he was stopped by a guard. The man was bigger than him and was decently built. The spear that he carried did not look either flimsy or strong. In other words, Bell wasn't able to properly gauge how strong he was and what his chances would be if it came to a fight. The man's aggressive body language certainly implied that it could come to that.

"Whaddya want kid?" He asked with eyes drilling into the bag on Bell's shoulder.

"I would like to meet with your familia captain."

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No."

"Then scram before I make you."

The Bell of a few weeks ago would never even thought of this, but his thinking had forcefully been changed recently. He took the bag, which had 50 000 valis, and handed it to the man. The man's expression, after looking at the contents, immediately changed. The greed was visible on his face.

"This way." Bell grimaced as he followed the man. Bribery did not leave a good taste in his mouth, and it probably never would. He hoped it never would, as it meant that Bell Cranel still existed.

He followed the man and they walked past people arguing and fighting over money multiple times. The people that were not fighting were passed out with dazed expressions and reeked of alcohol. Each step he took in this place sickened him. This was not what he imagined a familia to be like. The Hestia familia was certainly never going to become like that.

He was led to a room that had a sort of business-like feeling to it. Naturally, it was in a better state than the rest of the building. On one end of one of the tables sat a bespectacled man with grayish hair.

"I am Zanis Lustra, the captain of the Soma familia. What business brings you here today?" The emphasis on the word 'business' did not escape Bell.

"I am Bell Cranel, the captain of the Hestia familia. I would like to negotiate the transfer of one of the members of your familia to mine."

The man pushed his glasses up and smiled, clearly interested. "I have not heard of the Hestia familia before. Regardless, who is the person in question?"

"Liliruca Arde."

The man looked a bit surprised at this for a moment before he regained his composure. "And why is that?"

"My familia is new, so we need more members. Currently, we need a supporter. I teamed up with Lili and we seemed to work well together and she is not opposed to it." He avoided mentioning that he was the only member as that would have made him look desperate.

"I see. I am glad Arde is doing well." What was that supposed to mean? "She is a talented supporter who brings a lot of wealth to the Soma familia. I'm afraid we can't allow her to leave for a small fee. How much are you willing to pay?"

Bell's palms were getting sweaty. The man was clearly testing Bell's knowledge and preparation. The problem was, he hadn't prepared at all. He had no idea how much a supporter was worth or how much money was the norm for transfers. The idea of giving a monetary value to someone's worth was distasteful so it wasn't something he had ever bothered to learn about. If he said too little, the negotiations would fail. If he said too much, his incompetence would be clear and he would likely be scammed.

According to Lili, supporters were not worth much, especially so in the Soma familia. That gave him a bit more room for negotiation. But should he take the risk of the negotiation outright failing? Wouldn't getting taken advantage of be better? With how much he could make with Lili, it would only take a few days to make enough for them to live comfortably.

"500 000 valis," he offered.

"1 million, or no deal," Zanis shot back immediately.

Was he or was he not getting scammed? It was hard to tell with how Zanis had immediately replied with confidence. He had no choice but to accept.

"Deal."

"Then let me get a contract. Please excuse me for a moment."

Bell had a moment to himself as the older man had left the room. He sighed at his immaturity. He needed to get better at planning things out instead of rushing into them.

The man quickly returned with a piece of paper and a pen.

"Sign here."

The contract simply stated that the Soma familia was required to transfer over Liliruca Arde and in exchange, a million valis would be transferred from the Hestia familia's account to the Soma familia at the guild. With the signature of both captains, it would then be sent to the guild for approval.

Bell signed it and handed it back.

"I will get someone to submit this to the guild tonight. Will you be going to the dungeon with Arde tomorrow?"

"Yes, that's the plan. Should I cancel it so that we can do the transfer?"

"No, that's fine. Come in the evening tomorrow after you are done and bring Arde and your deity with you."

Sensing that the conversation was over, Bell got up to leave. "Thank you, I will see you tomorrow then."

Seeing the white-haired boy leave, Zanis couldn't hold back his smile anymore. The kid was inexperienced, and it showed in how he accepted a price over 50 times what a supporter was worth. However, that did not mean that Zanis didn't want more. He was greedy, and his greed demanded more. The boy had not even thought of checking the back of the contract. For example, what would happen if someone, unfortunately, met their demise before the transfer?

It was time to contact a certain person, his 'business partner' of sorts from the Ahriman familia.

After waking up with his head on a lap for the umpteenth time, Bell accepted his fate and did not jump up. It was still embarrassing, especially so with a hand running through his hair.

"Aiz-san, have you ever seen a familia transfer?"

"Hmm," she put a hand on her chin as she thought about it. "I didn't see it happening myself, but Lefiya, Bete, Tiona, and Tione leveled up before joining the Loki familia."

"I see." So it wasn't something that rare.

Figuring that he had rested enough, Bell got up for the next round. Aiz had brought a few potions today and she handed one to him. He thanked her and drank a little bit of it. It was much more potent than the ones he got Naaza. He wondered why. Putting the rest aside, he got into his fighting position and seeing that Aiz was ready, charged.

Bell stopped by the pub per usual. He skipped the evenings sometimes, but he always visited in the mornings to return Syr's lunchbox.

"Here you go," Syr handed him another lunchbox as she took the empty one.

"Thank you." As thanks for the daily lunch, he always left an extra tip for her whenever he ate at the pub.

"You seem happy today, did something good happen? Don't tell me… You are going on a date?" Syr put a hand to her mouth as if she had unveiled a huge scandal.

"Of course not. I am going to be getting a new familia member," he skillfully brushed off her attempt at teasing.

"Congratulations! Bring them to the pub next time."

"I will."

"So… Is it a girl?"

"... Yes, but it's not like that."

"Nya nya? White-hair got a girlfriend when he has Syr?" A head poked out from the back.

"Anya! I've told you many times that Bell-san and I are not like that!" So Syr could get flustered as well.

"Nyow nyow, nyothing escapes this detec-nyaaaa!" a loud smack was heard and Lunoire dragged the cat person away.

"By the way, is Ryu-san not here today?" She was the only staff he hadn't seen walking around today while talking to Syr.

"No, she has some business to attend to today." Loud thumping footsteps were heard coming from the back. "Speaking of business, I should get back to mine before it comes to me," Syr said while sweatdropping.

"I'll see you in the evening then," Bell said as he waved goodbye.

He did not look as beat up today thanks to the potions, but unfortunately, potions did not heal clothing or armor. He probably passed though as Syr hadn't mentioned it.

"Lili wonders why Bell-sama is beat up yet again."

"It will be like that every day."

"Hmmm." She did not comment further on it. "Say, Bell-sama, would you like to explore the tenth floor today? Lili guarantees that you are strong enough."

"Sure. I was going to suggest that as well." His stats were those of a veteran level one, so he needed to step up his game.

As they made their way down the floors of the dungeon, Bell noticed that Lili was looking unusually despondent. She kept her head down and was unfocused. She was slow to respond to things. When he asked her what was up, she simply feigned ignorance.

Things stayed that way until they reached the tenth floor.

Bell, it being his first time there, was taking in the scenery. It was a lot more open than the floors above and was blanketed by fog. He could make out dead-looking trees sticking out of the ground in places. He had learned in his lessons with Eina that these were sometimes used as weapons by orcs. Other monsters that spawned on this floor were needle rabbits, imps, and bad bats. The only ones he hadn't fought yet were bad bats, but he was still more worried about the orcs considering his last experience.

While he was thinking about this, Lili finally spoke up.

"I'm sorry Bell-sama, but Lili can't do this anymore," she said with a shaky voice. Bell turned around to see her tearing up.

The guilt had been eating away at her and she had reached her limit. Lili cursed herself in her mind over and over again for being so pathetic. Wasn't she going to do everything she could to hold on to her hope? Wasn't she going to help him? And yet here she was, leading him to a trap the moment her life was threatened.

She understood now. Actually, she had known all along. She was selfish and greedy, just like the adventurers she hated. She did not hesitate to choose her life over someone else's, despite having recently wished for death. And who was it that she was throwing under the carriage? The same person who had taken away her longing for death. It made her want to throw up.

Now that they were here, she realized that she really did not want him to die. So she tried to steel herself to make things right. Without him, she would have been dead, so her current life belonged to him. She was simply going to return it.

"What's wrong Lili?" He bent down and looked into her eyes kindly. That just made her tear up more. How could she have even thought of sacrificing him for herself? Truly disgusting.

"A trap… Lili brought Bell-sama into a trap. You will die if you stay here, please run!"

He looked shocked for a moment before his expression hardened. It wouldn't be surprising if he hated her now. She deserved it.

"Who set this up? What will happen to you if I run?"

"The Soma familia. Lili will simply get what she deserves for betraying Bell-sama and go to where she belongs."

"I see. Don't worry, this will be the last time the Soma familia asks something of you," he said as he patted her head. Was he trying to comfort her one her last time? But then why wasn't he leaving?

"They will be here any moment, please run!" But he did not run. He just kept patting her head.

"Do you not understand? You will be killed!" He finally pulled his hand back.

"A familia sticks together. As the captain of the Hestia familia, it is my responsibility everyone safe."

What was he talking about?

Before she could ask him what he meant, the sound of footsteps came from behind them.

"Look who it is. I'm surprised you didn't die two days ago! Don't worry, I'll give you a proper burial this time. Don't think I didn't realize you stole things from me!" A black-haired young man walked towards them while brandishing his long sword.

Bell took his weapons out and went in between Lili and the man.

"Huh? What do you think you're doing? Want me to cut you up as well?" He asked while smiling.

"We all know that you aren't strong enough for these floors, so chances are you would lose to him," a voice called out from behind. "Yo Arde, I see you did your job." The man was a raccoon person and looked more experienced than the other man. He was followed by two others behind me.

"Oi Canoe, what do you mean by job? I thought we were going to ambush them," the first man asked. Was there some miscommunication? If they were to start fighting each other, Bell could use that as a chance to run.

"Yeah, we are going to ambush them. It's just that you aren't part of it, Ged."

"Huh? What are you-"

"I'm trying to say that an unfortunate accident is going to happen and an unfortunate adventurer is going to die. But it would be a waste to leave his belonging in the dungeon right?" The man named Canoe smiled evilly.

"You bastard! I'll kill you!"

"Do you know what this is?" Canoe unwrapped something that he had been holding in a piece of cloth. As soon as he did so, the upper body of a killer ant rolled out and fell in front of Ged.

Ged's face went blue. He immediately stopped thinking of fighting and ran past Canoe and his gang, who let him go by, towards the stairs heading up.

That was not a good idea. Killer ants released pheromones when close to death which attracted others of their kin. Killer ants spawned on floors 7 to 9. Which meant that Ged was going straight toward a horde of them.

Bell did not like him, but he did not like the prospect of letting someone die either. Even if he was scum, Bell did not know him, his circumstances, what led him to be like that, and his possibility of changing. Until everything was considered, he could not leave him to die. He still wanted to be a hero, and their job was not to judge but to save.

He started to move but then realized that he would be leaving Lili alone with these three in close proximity which meant certain death for her. On the other hand, taking her with him would mean having to fight through them which could take too long, not to mention the chance of them being stronger than him and certainly having the numbers and experience advantage. Additionally, he would be talking her to a swarm of ants which could also mean death for her.

It was one or the other. He was obviously going to choose Lili, but the fact that he had to choose to let a person die made him start to hyperventilate. Yet another failure. A failure to be a hero. He failed, like always. He was a failure. Failure. Failure. Failure. Failure.

No, that person was ready to kill Lili, so wasn't this fair? Did Bell really need to save him? No, now he was judging someone's right to be saved. Heroes don't do that. But then who does? At what point should someone not be saved? At what point does someone not deserve a chance to change? He did not know. He did not know anything. His morals started and ended with saving, the middle was all blank.

An ever-increasing sound of a stampede snapped him out of it. He looked behind him to see an army of monsters coming his way. There were a bunch of orcs, imps, and even silverbacks and hard armoreds. What. The last two weren't supposed to be on this floor and this many? He would be hard-pressed to beat just two silverbacks or two hard armoreds at once, but there were at least thirty of each here.

He looked behind him, and the Soma familia members were simply standing there looking relaxed and guarding the stairs up. Were they tamers?

There was no way he was beating all of those monsters. He had to take Lili and fight through the three men, and it had to be right now.

He looked on in horror as they moved out of the way and a horde of killer ants and needle rabbits stormed down the stairs. He was completely surrounded. Even if the monsters that had come down from the 9th were a lot weaker than him, that number wasn't something he would be able to handle while watching his back for the stronger monsters and protecting Lili at the same time.

Eyes darting around wildly, he tried to figure out what to do but couldn't come up with anything. At the very least, he had to protect Lili. She also looked lost for words.

The monsters simply waited and stared at him. He could hear his heartbeat and each second that passed made him panic even more.

Suddenly, one of the silverbacks jumped at him. With Lili behind him, dodging was not an option. He blocked its punch with both of his blades and pushed back. He had been basically on par bare-handed against the silverback at the monsterphilia, and that one had chains in addition. He was stronger now. Bell immediately pounced and stabbed the monster in the chest, hitting the magic stone and killing the monster.

He immediately looked back and saw that none of the other monsters had moved.

"I have to admit, you've got some skills. It will be fun watching you slowly go down," Canoe called out from somewhere behind the monsters.

That's why they weren't all attacking at once. They wanted to see him suffer. What they did not know was that it gave him a chance. Now that he had begun fighting, his mind had started working again instead of panicking. He was going to blast the monsters in front of the stairs away with hellfire and-

Everyone in the room, monsters and people alike, was frozen solid from fear.

Because the dungeon screamed.

Somewhere beneath the guild, a god stood up from shock. Standing at over two meders tall, it was the first time in many years that his height was on full display. But that was not of importance.

For the dungeon had ignored his prayer on an upper floor.

Soooo I kinda lost interest in writing and stopped. But watching the currently airing episodes made the itch burn again. No idea how long it will last. Hopefully, I can finish this arc. Speaking of the anime, is everyone enjoying season 4?

Now the story. I don't remember all of my plans from before so some things may feel a bit off. Currently, the focus is on making Bell confront the fact that his goals and ambitions are too vague. He has to learn where to draw the line, and how to define things in terms of morality.

Currently, there are no plans of making any loops have excessive deaths (in the main story at least) because that, as someone mentioned in a review, would just be pointless suffering.

Why do they not test out the magic on the surface? I just followed the story on that. I think it's because there isn't really any place to do it in Orario without the risk of damaging things. If I remember correctly, it's tough for adventurers to get permission to leave Orario so they don't have access to all of that open space. That just leaves the dungeon. The big familias could try it in their huge yards.
