Chapter 4
S-Class Trial
One year later
It has been over a year since Natsu had joined the Fairy Tail Guild. He had adjusted very well, and got along with everyone. Though he had to deal with Erza, Mira, and Gray constantly challenging him to fight and he always won. He was greatly admired in the guild as well, he was seen as a prodigy, completing every job perfectly with minimum collateral damage. He was always praised by the guild calling him a genius, and with the power of his eyes he quickly gained the title Natsu of Sharingan and his name like Laxus and Gildarts was feared throughout the country.
Natsu was currently returning from a job, he had just dealt with a monster problem from a local village whose crops were being eaten. After a few minutes of walking, Natsu had finally made it back to the guildhall and when he opened the doors to the guild hall he was instantly hugged by a little girl with blue hair.
"Welcome Home Oni-chan" the little girl smiled.
"I'm home Wendy" Natsu smiled back at her rubbing her hair softly.
The little girl named Wendy had recently joined Fairy Tail a few months ago, you Natsu had found her lost while he was on a job.
Flashback
Natsu was walking through the forest returning from a job. It was then he stopped when he heard someone crying nearby.
"Sniff, Sniff, Gradine where are you," the cries said.
Natsu went towards the direction of where he heard the cries. Once he arrived at some bushes and he pushed them away he saw that the cries were coming from a little girl.
"Hi there," Natsu said kindly with a smile.
The little girl looked up at Natsu and said "Hello"
"What's wrong, are you lost?" Natsu asked.
"No, I was with my mommy and she" the little girl cried "She's..sniff..sniff...gone"
Natsu was shocked, did the girl's mother just leave her or did she get lost.
"Who is your mother?" Natsu asked, kindly kneeling down to her level.
"Her name is Gradine and she's a dragon," the little girl said "And she was teaching me magic"
This caught Natsu by surprise; this little girl was raised by a dragon as well.
"You're a dragon slayer," Natsu asked her.
The little girl nodded in response.
"I see what a coincidence" Natsu smiled.
"Huh," the little girl sniffled.
"You see, my father is a dragon too," Natsu told her.
"Really," the little girl asked.
"Yeah, his name is Igneel" Natsu smiled. "And he taught me magic and ninjitsu too"
"Wow," the little girl said in amazement.
"Hey what's your name?" Natsu asked, forgetting to do so when he met her.
"My name is Wendy Marvell" Wendy introduced.
"I see Wendy, my name is Natsu Uchiha," Natsu said to her smiling. "So how about you come with me to join my guild"
"A guild," Wendy asked.
"Yeah, it's a place where many wizards gather," Natsu smiled. "You'll meet a lot of people and make a lot of friends"
"REALLY," Wendy said smiling.
"Yeah, there they will help you find Grandine," Natsu told her.
"Do you promise?" Wendy asked.
"Yea I promise" Natsu smiled and offered his hand.
Flashback over
But, there was something else when Natsu met Wendy, he could tell she had some hidden potential with her. Though Natsu did not know what it was, he did not know if she belongs to a clan like him as Marvell was the last name Gradine gave her. Natsu hoped in due time he gets to help Wendy unlock her potential.
"Hey Onii-chan, let's play," Wendy said looking up at Natsu.
"I'm a little tired Wendy," Natsu told her with a smile.
"But you're never tired," Wendy smiled.
Natsu smiled at her and poked her forehead.
"Sorry Wendy maybe next time"
Wendy pouted at Natsu's statement a little upset that he is not able to play with her.
"You shouldn't blame Natsu, Wendy. It's not his fault he's always busy" Makarov said as he walked in on their conversation.
"Master," Natsu said.
"Grandpa" Wendy smiled.
"Natsu is always on jobs, so it's no wonder he's going to be tired when he comes back. So don't be sad about it" Makarov told her.
"Okay," Wendy said, pouting.
Natsu smiled. "Come on, let's get something to eat" Natsu took her hand and walked her over to a table. He then asked the barmaid for some food for Wendy, and once it arrived Wendy ate happily.
"You know you should spend more time with your little sister," a voice said.
Natsu turned around and saw the source of the voice was Erza.
"Erza" Natsu smiled. "I would like to, but I've been busy doing so many jobs"
"Still you need to find time to relax," Erza told him.
"You don't have to worry Erza, I'll find time to spend time with Wendy," Natsu said, giving her a kind smile, making her blush.
Erza tries to hide her blush "Well anyway I think Master is about to make an announcement"
"Announcement" Natsu had a question mark over his head.
"Yeah come on," Erza said as she walked closer to the stage in the guildhall.
Natsu soon followed her after Wendy finished eating, he went in front so he and Wendy could get a better view of the stage, and they saw Makarov standing there along with Laxus and Gildarts.
"Alright Everyone it's that time of year once again" Makarov announced, "Today we decide who will participate in the S-Class trials and become an S-Class wizard of Fairy Tail"
The guild members cheered loudly all of them hoping they would be chosen to become S-Class mages.
"S-Class Trials I see," Natsu said.
"Wow," Wendy smiled.
"Yeah, it's a big thing every year," Cana told him "Whoever wins the S-Class trials becomes an S-Class Mage and be allowed take harder jobs"
"I'm definitely gonna get nominated this year" Gray shouted, pounding his fist into his open palm.
"HA, like a stripper like you can become S-Class" Mira laughed.
"HUH What do you say bitch" Gray yelled, jumping onto Mira.
"HUH, You want to go" Mira yelled with angry eyes.
"That's enough you two" Erza told them "Master's watching"
Both Mira and Gray looked up and saw Makarov was watching them with an angry look on his face. Mira and Gray then got off each other and dusted themselves and began to listen to Makarov finish his announcement.
"Now for this year's S-Class trial we have only 3 nominees" Makarov announced.
"What only 3," Macao said, confused.
"I thought there would be more than that," Wakaba said.
"Now I am naming our 3 S-Class nominees," Makarov said.
"Erza Scarlet"
Erza smiled "I won't lose"
"Mirajane Strauss"
Mira had a confident smile "Ha, as If I lose to you red", she then gave Gray a look mocking him, making him angry.
"Finally we have Natsu Uchiha"
Natsu and the others in the guild were left shocked at the announcement.
"Seriously," Macao said, shocked.
"He's only been in the guild for a year and he's already S-Class material," Wakaba said, spitting out his drink.
"Wow"
"He really is amazing"
"Congratulations Onii-chan" Wendy gave Natsu a big hug, happy that her brother could become S-Class.
"Thanks, Wendy" Natsu smiled.
"Damn it, I'll definitely get picked next year," Gray said.
"The trials will begin in one week, at Hargeon Port," Makarov said. "Natsu, Erza, Mira be prepared because only one of you will become S-Class"
The three young mages nodded understanding the challenge that will come.
"I wish the three of you the best of luck," Makarov said as he left the stage.
"Well I better get some training done," Erza said as she left the guildhall.
"Yeah me too, I'm not losing to that redhead" Mira snarled. She then turned to Natsu "Or you" Mira then left the guildhall as well.
"I should go as well," Natsu told the others "Come on Wendy" he called as he began to leave the guildhall with Wendy following.
"Man, I wonder who's going to win," Wakaba said.
"My money is on Erza," Macao told him "She's already proven herself to be S-Class"
"Mira is no pushover though," another guild member said.
"Yeah well, I say Natsu is going since he beat both Erza and Mira in a fight" someone else added.
It was then that the members of the guild began to bet on who was going to become S-class.
Forest Area
Natsu and Wendy arrived back at their house. It was small but big enough for them to both live there. Natsu had built this house because he did not want to pay for rent in the dorms and living in the forest gave him a perfect area to train in. Natsu noticed that Wendy was yawning and rubbing her eyes.
Natsu smiled "Hey Wendy how about you go inside and get some rest, while I do some training"
Wendy nodded and complied, but Natsu can tell she is a little upset still. Still, she followed his orders and went inside the house.
Natsu took a breath "Alright time to train"
1 week later
Natsu, Erza, and Mira were on board the ship heading straight towards Tenrou Island Fairy Tail's sacred ground. It was then Makarov walked on to the deck.
"Alright you three, this trial is rather simple," Makarov said "You will find and locate First Master Mavis's grave, there you will find a designated flag for each of you and whoever brings back their flag first will become S-Class"
"HA! Is that it" Mira laughed.
"Don't take this challenge lightly Mira" Makarov told her "Both Laxus and Gildarts will be obstacles you have to go through to complete this challenge, and there are plenty of traps set throughout the island as well so it's best you all be careful"
"We'll do our best," Erza said.
"Hmm stop being a kiss up only one of us is going to win and it's not gonna be you," Mira said crossing her arms.
"And you think you'll win," Erza glared.
"Yeah obviously" Mira glared back.
Natsu signed at the two's rivalry, but he smiled as well seeing how close the two are.
"You two are really close," Natsu smiled.
"SINCE WHEN" Erza and Mira yelled at him.
"HEY, QUITE DOWN BRATS" Makarov yelled, making Erza and Mira turn away from each other and scoff.
"Sorry Master" they both apologized.
"We have arrived," Makarov told them.
The three young mages then looked off in the direction Makarov was pointing and saw a large island in the distance. The island was very large with a giant tree in the center with another mass of land on top of the tree.
"Welcome to Tenrou Island," Makarov said.
"Wow," Natsu said in amazement.
"It's beautiful," Erza smiled.
"Hmm" Mira scoffed.
The ship finally docked on the island and three participants stepped onto the island.
"Alright are you three ready"
The three wizards nodded.
"Ready...set….GO" Makarov shouted.
Once Makarov said the three then set off to begin the trial. Each one of them taking a separate route, with Erza and Mira running through the forest while Natsu jumped through the trees.
"I'm going to win," Erza declared.
"Yeah, right I'm going to be S-Class" Mira shouted to the redhead.
"HUH," Erza glared. "You still think you're going to win"
"Of Course" Mira smugly smirked "I am stronger than you"
"They prove it then whore" Erza shouted at her.
"I will," Mira yelled back.
The two then separated, taking a different path, with Natsu in the trees observed their little argument.
"Yup those two are close" Natsu smiled as he watched the two. "Now Master said that our flags are at the First Master's grave"
Natsu then summoned one of his crows and had to do some recon to find a grave for him. He then continued to jump through the trees. As he was jumping through the trees, he felt a presence in front of him.
He then dropped down from the tree and saw that he was facing an older orange-haired man in a brown cloak.
"Yo Natsu" the man smirked.
"Gildarts-san," Natsu said.
"I'm honestly surprised a newbie like you is already considered S-Class material," Gildarts told the boy "I'm really impressed"
"You flatter me, Gildarts-san, I take it I have to get past you to continue," Natsu asked.
"That's right kid, now show me what you got" Gildarts smiled with confidence.
Natsu then jumped in the air and threw several shurikens at Gildarts, in response Gildarts used his crash magic to destroy the weapons.
"You have to do better than that kid," Gildarts told him.
Natsu did not answer, he just remained silent and formed several hand signs.
FIRE STYLE FIREBALL JUTSU
Gildarts once again held his hand out and destroyed the fireball. "Just throwing attacks at me is not going to work Natsu," he said as he was surrounded by a gulf of smoke, it was then Gildarts heard several noises, he instinct dodged and saw that Natsu was throwing Kunai around his feet.
"Your aim needs work, kid" Gildarts told him as he saw Kunai Natsu throwing it off as the Kunai was just landing near his feet.
"You sure about that," Natsu said.
Gildarts looked confused; he then looked down at the Kunai Natsu and saw that each one had a tag attached to them. It was then each tag began to spark.
"Uh oh," Gildarts said in surprise and Natsu smirked.
BOOM
It was then the explosive tags attached to each kunai exploded, creating a giant hole that Gildarts fell into.
"Hmm" Natsu smirked "Master said I have to get past you, but not beat you"
Gildarts snickered with his back on the ground "Not bad kid"
Natsu then continued forward, and after some time he arrived at Mavis' grave and found a flag with cartoonish faces of him, Erza, and Mira on it.
"Guess I'm the first one here," Natsu said to himself. Natsu then grabbed his flag and started to head back to the port.
After an hour or two Natsu arrived back at the port flag in his hand. Makarov was already there waiting for him and he smiled.
"Well done Natsu, you passed," Makarov praised.
Natsu bowed "Thank you, Master Makarov."
"Master, I'm here," Erza said holding her flag."
Erza then looked up and saw Natsu was already here. "What Natsu you're here already,"
Natsu nodded, Erza then pouted and fell to the ground "Damn it I lost,"
"Well since Mira is knocked out, I guess the exam is over," Makarov said. "Congratulations Natsu Uchiha, You are now an S-Class Wizard of Fairy Tail,"
Natsu bowed "Thank you, Master,"
"Congrats Natsu," Erza smiled.
"Thank you, Erza," Natsu smiled seeing it made Erza blush a little but she shook it off.
"But, don't make this think you're stronger, next time we face off I'm not losing," Erza smirked.
"I see," Natsu said.
It was then Laxus and Gildarts emerged from the forest, Laxus holding the unconscious Mira.
"Alright, let's head home,"
"Yes sir,"
The group then went onto a ship unknowing to them a mysterious figure in a mask was watching them.
