THE OTHER WAY ROUND
Chapter 4
DPOV-
When we entered her office she looked somewhat happy. But not in a good way. Her expression suddenly reminded me of a story my mama used to read me when I was little 'wolf and the seven little goats'.
In this case she was obviously the wolf…
"Ivan zeklos and Dimitri Belikov, welcome back!" she said and gestured us to sit, on the 2 chairs infront of her desk. I don't know why but I looked back to see Rose. She was standing in perfect guardian posture, even though she was sleepy as hell, she still managed to look beautiful as heaven.
She gave me a slight nod. I turned my gaze to Kirova as we sat down. And then Kirova started talking to Ivan about how irresponsible we are and blah blah blah.
I was deep in my own thoughts… about only one person; one girl. Rose Hathaway.
Why was I even thinking about her? I don't know.
I was thinking bout her hair which would've felt like silk in my fingers. Her perfect body… with her extremely awesome curves. The jolt of electricity that passed through me every time we made physical contact.
My mind went back to the car, when we were going to be attacked by strigoi. How she straddled me. we were so close. So close.
Her lips were plump. The perfect shape.
Only one thing that was bothering me [aside from Rose being older than me] is when she grabbed my arm and practically dragged me out of the dining room.
Did she do that because I was walking slow?
Or because of me smiling at Tasha… was she jealous?
No you stupid! Why would she be jealous? That too for a guy whose 6-8 years younger than her. She could have any guy she wants. Of course it wouldn't be you.
I was brought back from my wonder-land, when rose nudged me lightly on my shoulder.
I blinked my eyes and saw Kirova glaring at me.
Oh boy! I was in trouble.
"Mr. Belikov. Were you even hearing a word I was saying" she asked
I nodded my head
"what you did was irresponsible. You are a dhampir, its you duty to protect moroi." She said
"and I did Ki- headmistress Kirova." I said, "I kept him safe and alive"
"that's because you got lucky. Thank the heavens that you didn't had any encounter with strigoi over the past 2 years. Orelse we wouldn't be having this conversation right now" Kirova said, "and if anything happened to Mr. Zeklos, then the whole Zeklos family will be at the academy's throat. MY THROAT." She shouted and sprang up from her chair.
I said my apologies. But I think she knew I didn't mean them so she kept taunting me and my 'stupid-novice-ways'.
She took a deep breath and said
"Ivan will continue his studies here at the academy, meanwhile you will be expelled" she said the last line looking at me.
Expelled?
EXPELLED?!
"you cant so this, headmistress!" I said in a angry tone.
"oh I can do anything Mr. Belikov" she replied smiling evilly.
"please headmistress." Ivan spoke up. "its not dimka's fault, I told him that I was going to run away. He came along just to protect me."
"I don't belive you!" Kirova snarled "it was definitely this dhamphir's plan to make an escape."
How was that my plan!
As I began to speak rose came forward and stood in the space between me and ivan.
"headmistress please you cannot do this." Rose said in a calm voice.
"and why is that Hathaway?" she demanded as if Rose was her student.
"this is not a right way to punish a Dhampir. Expelling him and taking away his dream of becoming a Guardian is not a suitable punishment." She said, trying her best to convince Kirova.
I really started to respect her now. She stood up for me, in front of the guardians and Kirova.
"then what do you suggest rose?" Kirova asked her. It looked like she was genuinely asking for her opinion.
But to my disappointment rose said "im not suggesting anything headmistress Kirova. Im just saying don't expel him. Its not right."
Kirova's eyes turned dark "then what? He goes unpunished?" she asked.. more like yelled.
Rose inhaled deeply and turned her gaze towards me. I gave her a pleading look.
I cant afford to get expelled. Not after everything my mama's doing to keep our family well fed and educated.
I prayed to god to do some miracle that changes kirova's decision.
"then find some other ways to punish him!" rose's demanding voice interrupted my thoughts. She continued "cut off his extra curricular activities, put early curfew, order him extra training sessions after school maybe a mentor if possible."
"but who will mentor him? You came here last month rose… you don't know how he his. He is a mannerless child. No one here at the academy will have the patience to tolerate him!" she said in a stern voice.
Mannerless child?
Im NOT a mannerless child!
As I was about to begin my yelling I saw Ivan glaring at me.
I decided it's the best if I kept my patience…. But rose made me loose my control when she said "I know Mr. Belikov is wild and impulsive but-"
Before she could speak further I sprang up from my chair, ivan did too, to calm me down but I ignored the pleading look he sent me to stop.
"Wild and Impulsive?!" I asked her in my scary voice "you don't even know me Ro- Guardian Hathaway! Who the hell are you anyway… and why do you always want boss people-" I regretted my words as soon as they came out of my mouth. She looked hurt, very hurt if she hadn't put on her guardian mask.
Before I could anything Kirova smacked her hand on her desk. Hard.
"this is no way you can talk to a guardian! Especially Guardian Rosemarie Hathaway. Do you know who she is? How much experienced she is than you, how much of respect she has earned, being a 24 year old female guardian." She shouted at me.
I slowly looked at rose, unable to meet her eyes.
Her face was hardened again. Her guardian mask was on again.
But I knew that she was hurt and angry with my outburst.
"how many strigois have you killed Dimitri Belikov?" Kirova asked me. I snapped my neck to her direction. How could she ask me that?
Im still a novice. I didn't even graduated! How can I kill strigois?
"headmistress, Dimitri hasn't even graduated. How can he kill strigois?" ivan spoke up for me.
Kirova's eyes were still in my direction, piercing through my skin second by second.
"why cant you? Dimitri is 17, will be 18 in a few months. He should be ready to face a strigoi by now." She said turning her head towards ivan.
She looked at rose this time, her face softened a bit if that was possible "rose has her first kill- kills when she was 16." She said.
I felt rose shuddering.
Killing a strigoi at 16?
16!
Thats impossible.
But wait… did she said kills?
As if reading my expressions Kirova said "she killed 3 strigoi. Isnt that right dear?" all eyes turned to rose. There was sadness and regret in her eyes.
She was such an amazing guardian I wanted to punch my self for saying such thing to her.
But the fact that she got her first molnija mark- marks at 16 amazed me.
Kirova cleared her throat "now lets get back to where we were. Rose you see how ruthless Dimitri is. No guardian mentor will tolerate him." She said simply.
" I have no personal or intellectual duties or responsibilities towards Mr. Belikov." Rose said in a straight-forward tone "but the guardian numbers are going down… and also Dimitri is Ivan's bestfriend… and we all know when the time comes he will put himself in front of Ivan. And I think we should also consider the zeklos' wishes to put Ivan as Dimitri's charge… he may be impulsive" rose waited a little while waiting for my outburst but I kept my calm. She continued "but I can see potential… he is a guardian material."
Her words had no emotions… but I still feel so grateful to her.
"but-"
Before Kirova said anything rose interrupted her "Kirova" she said in a friendly voice, "you knew how I was… you never believed that I could be a guardian and here I am… being one of the best." She smirked at Kirova.
"yes. But you had a brilliant mentor. Alberta… and you were somewhat patient and okay… but who will mentor him? You?" Kirova's voice was serious and challenging.
Rose was startled.
Please rose! Accept it. Be my mentor. Save me!
"i- that's- that's not what I meant." She said in a small voice.
"and there I go outside the academy" I mumbled to myself.
Rose noticed it.
She was my only chance at staying here. I really wanted her to take me as her student. Not becuz I didn't wanted to be expelled by Kirova, or that she was my last resort. I really wanted to know her. To learn how to fight. From her.
I wanted to be as good as her.
I needed her so much right now.
I gave her a pleading look. Ivan gave her his best puppy eyes which I should tell, are completely hard to say no to.
"well rose if you don't accept him. Then he will be going straight out of the academy, because only you have the tolerance to tolerate him." Kirova said.
"i-I will." Rose said suddenly. I looked at her at once. Every one did.
"I will mentor Dimitri" she said, trying her best to be confident.
I was on cloud nine!
"very well then. I hope you don't regret your decision Guardian Hathaway." Kirova said.
"I hope so too" she replied back looking at me.
"I will never make her regret." I swore to myself.
"now let set some ground rules, shall we"
After this Kirova began telling me bout my 10 min early curfew than the other students, no parties, no extra curriculars…. Basically everything that resembled fun.
"you will train with guardian Hathaway before and after class… and even in any breaks or free periods you get. and if Guardian Rosemarie Hathaway- Mazur reject you as her student, then you will be straight away sent back home. Is that clear?" she asked. I nodded and said that I accepted all the rules and terms.
But I kept thinking on why did rose had 2 surnames… was she married?! Huh no way!
Hathaway- Mazur…
Mazur… I knew some when of that surname very well.
My eyes didn't move away from rose. I looked at her hair… her lightly tanned skin which glowed in the sunlight. Her curves…. Her slight Turkish accent…
She was his daughter.
She was mazur's daughter!
Mazur helped me and my family a lot. I owed him big time. He kept my abusive father away from my family and Russia.
Now I got it… rose's attitude, her snarky comments, her boldness… it wasn't all from Guardian Janine Hathaway… not all of it. Some was from Abe.
God! Im falling for zmey's daughter!
No you are not falling for her you idiot! She is my mentor now. And that all what I felt towards her was just simple attraction.
Simple attraction.
Nothing else.

Now! What will happen between rose and Dimitri. Cuz our rosie is a lil bit upset because of dimka's outburst.
Will she forgive him? Or will she start being blunt with him.
And what will happen when A- (oh sorry! No spoilers.)… someone very special from rose's past comes again?
Will Dimitri and rose sort out there problems and just accept that it isnt "simple attraction" or will I just drag this debate for some more chapters?
