Preface: Hello, again! I'm back from my hiatus - and now I kinda regret it haha. Long story short, COVID's in my house now (I'm negative, thankfully, but as I type this, I'm wearing a mask in my own den). It shouldn't stop me from uploading, thankfully. Also, to answer a question from an anonymous reviwer - yes, a certain family of dogs will show up again! With all that said, let's get into the first of the Trials of Code!

MINECRAFT MANIACS:
LIGHT AND DARK

Previously...following an adventure in the Blue's Clues world, Danny, Liam, Kevin, and their companions entered the Pikwik Planet, teaming up with the Pikiwk Pack to completely fill the first Key of Balance. Although they were ambushed by mobs and rogue gangermen, they were able to successfully fill up the key.

Now...they return to the Minecraft world to face the first two Trials of Code...

Chapter 7:
Parcels and Prizes, Part Three -
The First Two Trials

I felt like I had a bit of a pep in my step as I walked back through the portal, definitely because of how we managed to fill up the first Key of Balance."Y'know, besides the fighting bits, that wasn't too hard," I admitted once everyone was back through.

"True, but now we know we have two bad guys to watch out for," Liam added. "But hopefully we won't be hearing from them for a while, so let's get that first Cube of Balance while we still can!"

Balanica smiled (or at least I think she did - it's hard to tell when she doesn't have a mouth). "Love the enthusiasm, boys!" she said. She pointed towards the back wall, where the three keyholes awaited us. "Just place the key into the first keyhole, and the challenges await you!"

I nodded and took the key from the allay's hands. Walking up to the keyhole marked with the "yin" symbol, I placed the key right into the hole. Nothing happened. "Hmm…maybe I gotta turn it?" I wondered aloud, but just as I prepared to do just that, the key was yanked right into the hole, which then expanded to fill up the entire wall. "Whoa…" I said, stepping back. "Like the keyholes in Super Mario World…"

Kevin took a deep breath. "Well, you guys ready?" he asked.

"Ready as I'll ever be," said Liam.

"(I'll try my best,)" said Spawny with a reluctant sigh.

"I'll try, too," I said. And so, we all braced ourselves and walked right into the keyhole. Inside was a black void filled with tiny ones and zeros, sorta like the place where Fuquatres kept us prisoner back in the Corruption. "Huh…I was expecting something more menacing," I said. Then the keyhole portal closed and the invisible platform keeping us standing vanished. And we started falling.

Everyone started screaming. "Is this the first Challenge of Code?" Liam asked, confused.

"Nop! Just the entrance to it!" said Balancia, fluttering with the falling heroes.

"I'd hate to see how we enter the others, then!" said Danny. Just then, he noticed something that made him concerned. A strange sheet made out of the binary code. "Is that…some kind of filter?"

"Filter?" said Liam. "What, are we gonna hit it? Are we in some kind of waterfall?" The group then got their answer when they passed through the filter unharmed…but something happened that made them even more worried. "Hey! My inventory's empty!"

"(Mine as well,)" said Spawnette, missing her amulet. "(Spawny's scepter is gone, too!)"

"And the Chicken Blade!" added Danny. He was definitely upset because of how important the sword was to him.

"Oh, don't worry! You'll get them back when you win!" Balancia soothed. "Besides, you'll need an empty inventory for these challenges."

"Why?" asked Kevin. Then they all hit the ground (or whatever it was). Thankfully, all of their health bars were kept full, though they still landed in awkward positions, making it a really strange sensation. "Well, I guess we better try to land better next time," said Kevin, picking himself up from the ground after landing head-first.

[BGM: Johan Johnson - Creeper Woods]

Danny helped Pork Chop up and brushed himself off. "So, what kind of tricky trial do have to face?" he wondered, looking ahead. In front of the group was a room with three large doors and a chest.

"So…I guess these are the doors to each challenge?" Liam thought aloud walking towards the chest. "Well, I guess we should check this…" But when he opened the chest, he found something he wasn't expecting. "What the heck?"

"What's in there?" Danny and Kevin asked.

"A sapling!" said Liam, confusedly taking the baby tree out of the chest. "That's the only thing that's in here!" He slammed the chest shut, and the box vanished, revealing a dirt block. "Well, if our first challenge is gardening, fine!" Irritated, he planted the sapling onto the ground, where it automatically grew into a full oak tree. But then, a small chime played. "Huh? What did that mean?"

"Look!" said Danny, pointing above. A stream of water fell from the invisible ceiling, a stream of lava coming down next to it. The two met in a small trench, creating a cobblestone generator. "Looks like it's one of those 'more full as we go along' things!"

"So our next step must be to make a pickaxe," said Kevin. He walked up to the tree, cracked his knuckles, and punched out five logs from the tree. "There you go, Liam," he then said, passing them on to his friend.

"Hmm…there's something familiar about this," said Liam, examining the logs. Using his sharp crafting skills, he converted the logs into planks, then a crafting table, and finally used three planks and two sticks to make a wooden pickaxe. "Hey! This is just the process for the first night of Minecraft!"

"And not only that," added Danny, "but these are the same trials in the Cave of Experts! Just, y'know…modified!"

"(Yeah! We had all of the tools here from the start back in the cave!)" pointed out Spawny.

"Sharp eye, you three!" complimented Balancia. "Since you seem to have a good grasp at what's going on, I'll be in Danny's inventory if you need me!" With that, she zoomed into Danny's inventory, waiting to be called.

"Well, if that's the case, I think if we make some stone tools," Kevin thought, "one of these doors will open up." To see if he was correct, he mined up three blocks of cobblestone from the generator, walked over to the crafting table Liam made, and upgraded to a stone pickaxe. The chime played again, and the doors on the east and west walls opened up. The east door revealed a chamber full of coal ore, while the west door revealed a chamber filled with pigs and sheep.

"Alright, I think I know what to do now," said Danny. "Part of us gets coal to make torches, another part gets some food and wool, and then we take shelter and try to survive the night!"

"Alighty! Spawny, Spawnette, and Pork Chop, get us some coal! We'll take care of the animals," said Liam. Using the wooden pickaxe, he mined up some more stone and used whatever wood he had left to make stone swords for him, Kevin, and Danny. The two groups then split up to gather materials. The rabborgs and Pork Chop mined up every single bit of coal, clearing a nice space for a shelter, while the players offed every pig and sheep they could find. Danny was secretly thankful there weren't any babies around, and that Pork Chop wasn't watching. Those would've made it harder to slaughter so many innocent animals.

After a few minutes, the group reunited in the middle of the room. "(There was a ton of coal in there!)" said Spawny, holding handfuls of the black lumps that naughty children would get at Christmas. "(We should be able to make a lot of torches!)"

"If we had sticks, that is," said Liam. The leaves of the tree were starting to decay, dropping apples and more saplings. "Now if only we had more room to plant…" As he said that, a new chime played, and a whole patch of dirt appeared in the corner of the chamber. "Hah! Whaddya know?"

[BGM: Johan Johnson - arena2]

"Um…there's a downside, though," Kevin pointed out. The growl of a zombie was heard across the room as the creature spawned. "Looks like it's nighttime now."

"Alright. I'll get us some more tools. The rest of you fend off against the mobs," said Liam. The others nodded and charged towards the mobs that began to spawn.

"Y'know, it's a good thing we're just dealing with naturally spawning mobs instead of whole hordes," said Kevin, doing battle with a zombie.

"Definitely a nice change of pace," said Danny. As Pork Chop rammed into a skeleton, Danny knocked away the arrows with his sword and stabbed it right through the skeleton's rib cage. "Though fighting normally again is a bit weird," he added. He stabbed a few more times to fully defeat the skeleton.

Liam placed down the last sapling. "Mind passing me the bones?" he called over. "These guys aren't growing right away!"

"(We shall take care of that!)" said Spawnette. She kicked the spider she and Spawny were facing and ran over to Danny to pick up the bones from the skeleton he killed. Dodging attacks from the other mobs that spawned, as well as the spider still on their tail, the rabborgs successfully delivered the bones to Liam, who promptly turned them into bone meal.

"Got some more for ya!" said Kevin, tossing the bones he got to Pork Chop. The piglet slid under zombie legs and bounced off of spider abdomens to get to Liam…but just as he got there, his face filled with green. "Uh-oh!" said Kevin.

"No, it can't be…" said Danny, fear filling his body. The hissing confirmed his fear. "Creeper!"

Pork Chop oinked an "Aw, man!" as the creeper began to fizz. Thinking quickly, the piglet hopped into the air and kicked the creeper square in the face, then picked it up with his tiny hooves and tossed it into the air, where it blew up, destroying only a few leaves.

"Wow! Nice save!" Liam complimented the piglet, who handed over the bones. "And…this should be enough!" Liam added, using the newly-crafted bone meal to grow all the trees.

"Alright, let's get to punching!" said Danny, running towards the trees with the others. Deciding to just grin and bear it, the group all punched up every tree they could, collecting up all the wood. "Alright, I think the best course of action would be to get right to that shelter and make some more stuff once we sleep."

"Well, we wouldn't have to deal with as many mobs," said Kevin. "Alright, let's go with that!"

"But first, I should get my crafting table so we don't waste any resources," said Liam. But as the three prepared to face the mobs ahead of them, there was another hissing noise. And they were too slow to react.

[BGM: End]

Kablamo! The creeper blew up, damaging every single one of the heroes. Thankfully, they all survived, but they wouldn't be able to take as many hits. "Okay, forget the crafting table!" Liam called. "Just run!" And run they did. Slashing through the mobs that were in their way, the players and their companions ran into the doorway where the coal once was. Liam quickly made a new crafting table, as well as a wooden door, and used that and whatever planks he also made to block off the doorway.

"Huh, that's weird," said Kevin, looking around. "It's pitch-black in here!" Sure enough, despite the mysterious barricades being transparent, they seemed to have stopped letting in light.

"(Here's some coal!)" said Spawny, attempting to toss some to Liam. Liam managed to pick up the coal and used a lump of it with a stick to make a few torches.

"There! That's better!" said Liam, placing a torch on the wall. The chamber filled with light, showing the group what was going on outside.

"Well, now that that's settled, let's make some beds," said Danny. Walking over to the crafting table, he used the wool and some planks he had on him to make beds for everyone. Walking into the carved-out area where the coal once was, he placed all six beds near each other. "Time to hit the hay!" he said, laying on one of the beds.

The other five followed suit, and after what seemed like a few seconds, day had broken within the small area. Sitting up and looking to the outside area, Liam saw the zombies and skeletons burning to a crisp and the spiders no longer wishing to attack, as if the sun had come out. "Nothing like five seconds of sleep to fix all your problems," he said, picking up his bed. He also noticed the north door was now open. "And to let you get to where you're going next!"

[BGM: Peter Hont - Caravan]

Outside, the group gathered some more wood and cobblestone, and made some more torches, pickaxes, and a furnace to cook all of their meat. "If this is really like the Cave of Experts, the next bit will involve mining," said Danny, waiting for his pork and mutton to cook.

"Speaking of which, we should probably use some of these ideas for the cave," said Liam. "Having to unlock everything makes for a better challenge than just having it all handed to you." The meat finished cooking, and everyone got their inventories prepared. "Alright, let's head on to challenge two," said Liam, and the group stepped through the now-open door on the north wall.

The door opened up to another chamber, this one filled with stone. Two more passageways sat at the east and west walls, while the north wall's passageway was blocked off by diamond ore. While the cave of Experts would simply go with a maze, this one seemed more like the group would have to split up to cover more ground effectively.

"Well, at least there's only two," Kevin began before turning around. The door they just took was now a third passageway. "Guess we made a good decision getting more materials first."

Spawnette thought the situation over. "(I know! Spawny and Kevin shall go together, Danny and Pork Chop shall go together, and I will go with Liam!)"

"I suppose that'll work," said Danny, nodding. But then he realized something unusual. "Wait, you and Liam?"

"(Oh, yes. I realize I didn't leave myself with any…usual options…)" Spawnette confessed.

[BGM: Peter Hont - Spider Den]

"Hmph. We're just gonna have to make it work," said Liam, reluctantly. "Alright, I guess we'll go…that way!" He pointed towards the east wall. "I'll see the rest of you on the other side!" Waving goodbye to the others, he and Spawnette walked into the passageway…which was promptly blocked off by a wall of obsidian. "And…we're trapped."

"(Well, perhaps until we find this iron ore, anyway,)" said Spawnette. She inspected the area, finding wooden support beams. "(It seems we are in an abandoned mineshaft.)"

"And I hear cave spiders…" said Liam, listening to the screeching noise. "...that way!" He pointed west, and he and Spawette traveled down that direction. Sure enough, a huge wall of cobwebs blocked their way, and in the middle were smaller, more blueish spiders. "Alright, we have no milk, so if they poison us, we're probably dead. How are we gonna do this?"

Spawnette decided to try something. She hopped into the air and twirled around. Despite not having her amulet, she still managed to slow her descent. "(Mmm!)" she said, getting an idea. Carefully getting up next to the cobwebs, she twirled around and managed to destroy it without getting stuck. "(There we go! I clean this up, you take care of these nasties!)"

"On it!" said Liam, taking out his sword. As Spawnette twirled through the cobwebs, Liam did battle with the cave spiders. Dodging their bites, Liam slashed through their bodies and collected the string that they dropped.

They just about made it to the spawner when Spawnette was bitten by a cave spider. "(Ouch!)" she cried as the poison entered her body.

"Aw, crap!" called Liam. Rushing over, he chopped through the remaining cobwebs and picked up the rabborg before stomping on the remaining cave spiders to defeat them. "Aright, are you okay?"

"(Err…yes, I think I will be,)" said Spawnette. The poison did a good number on her body, but she still seemed like she could heal.

"Here, have an apple," said Liam, giving her one of the fruits that dropped from the trees the previous night before mining up the cave spider spawner. "And that should be enough for those bad boys," he said. He spotted a small fleck of tannish material in the wall behind the spawner. "And there's our iron!" He walked up and mined up the block with his pickaxe. Because of the recent Caves & Cliffs Update, the block of ore didn't drop, instead dropping a piece of raw iron, which could be smelted into an ingot. "Alright, now let's see if we can get outta here!"

"(Err…that may be difficult,)" said Spawnette. When Liam turned around, something impossible had happened - the entire tunnel they just went through was gone, and in its place was a large pit of cave spiders. The only platforms there were stone slabs held up by fences.

"Wow, I guess anything goes over here," said Liam. "And I do not feel like doing parkour so…maybe we can cheat the system…" Looking up, he saw a fence post on the ceiling. "It's a desperate gamble, but…" Placing the crafting table back down, Liam used some sticks and string to make a fishing rod. "Let's see if I've still got it!" Picking up the crafting table and grabbing Spawnette, Liam swung his fishing rod around and the hook hit the fence. Walking back a little, Liam then ran and jumped at the ledge, swinging across the chasm. At first, he seemed like he was going to make it, but as the hook left the fence post, he realized he jumped too soon and was going to fall into the cave spiders.

Then, at that moment, Spawnette mustered enough strength to twirl again, sending both her and Liam to the other side. "(Yes! We survived!)" she cried.

"Heh, nice going there," Liam complimented. "I guess we make a good team after all." He got up and began to make his way over to the now-open passageway. I wonder how the others did… he thought.

"And…we're trapped," I said as soon as the obsidian blocked off the passageway. "At least until we find the iron, probably." Pork Chop and I decided to go into the south passageway, and inside we found a wall of mossy cobblestone. "Alright, looks like we've got a dungeon to face, Porky," I said. The pig oinked in agreement, and I mined up the wall to reveal the ever-familiar sight of a dungeon…with creepers.

[BGM: Johan Johnson - arena1]

"Huh, that's new," I said. Pork Chop and I ran into a corner of the dungeon and I quickly made a few pillars for us out of wood, three blocks high so the creepers couldn't get us so easily. "Alright, let's see here," I thought aloud. "I don't have the Chicken Blade on me, so I'll have to find another way to attack from a distance…" Checking my inventory, I saw that I had a few arrows from the skeletons the night before, plus some spider string. "Hmm…I could probably use a bow to take care of the creepers, leaving you to mine up the spawner!"

Pork Chop nodded, liking the plan. Making a crafting table with the wood I had left, I used some sticks and string to make a bow. I only had eight arrows, so I was gonna have to be thrifty with how I used them. "Okay, on my signal, you go," I said, handing Pork Chop my pickaxe. "3…2…1…go!" I quickly shot a couple of arrows to clear Pork Chop a space, and the pig hopped down and ran towards the spawner. When the creepers went after Pork Chop, I shot at them some more so they would leave him alone. Quickly, Pork Chop mined up the spawner, and as soon as he did, I hopped down and finished off the creepers with my sword before they could blow up. "Yes! That is what I call teamwork!" I said, pumping my fist.

[BGM: John Williams - Escape from the Temple]

After picking up the gunpowder that the creepers dropped, I decided to check the chest that was in the dungeon. Inside, I found something I wasn't expecting: a block of TNT with lava poking out of the "TNT" marks on it. Super TNT from Minecraft: Story Mode. Putting it into my inventory for later, I grabbed the pickaxe from Pork Chop. "Ah, there's the iron!" I said, spotting it where the spawner once was. As soon as the raw iron flew into my inventory, though, I heard a rumbling noise. In fear, Pork Chop and I looked up…but we didn't wait to see what it was. We just got the heck out of there! Or we tried to, anyway. When we tried to run out of the chamber, the open door just kept sliding away from us! And that was when the source of the rumbling came: a giant boulder! "First the TNT, and now two movie references?" I said aloud. "Man, this place is crazy!"

I don't know how long Pork Chop and I ran, but we both knew we couldn't run forever. So as I ran, I thought, too, of what to do. And that's when it hit me: crafting! I had exactly eight lumps of gunpowder from the creepers, and combine that with the TNT…

"Porky, wanna try crafting something?" I asked. Pork Chop was about to shake his head no, but he noticed my desperation, so he nodded. "Good! Hop on!" I picked him up and had him sit on my head, then tossed him the crafting table, gunpowder, and TNT. "Alright, Pork Chop! Super TNT in the middle, and gunpowder all around!"

Pork Chop obliged right away. With me running, it must've been tricky for him to keep everything on, but luckily, he managed to put everything on. And the result was a purple block of TNT with a glowing "F" on it. The Formida-bomb.

Perfect timing, too, because the boulder was getting dangerously close, and my hunger bar was running low! "Okay, just gotta time this right…" I grabbed the Formida-bomb, waited for the right moment, then dropped the bomb right behind me. The boulder stopped against the Formida-bomb, and Pork Chop and I dove right out the open doorhole just as the entire chamber blew up.

[BGM: Peter Hont - The Maze]

As soon as you and Spawny walk into the west passageway, the doorhole is covered up. "(And…we're trapped,)" says Spawny, "(hopefully until we find that iron.)"

"Well, we'll just have to find it!" you say, trying to look on the bright side. Turning around, you see three doorways blocked with cobblestone, compared to the smooth stone elsewhere. "Hmm. Looks like one of those 'guess the correct option' things."

"(There's a sign over here!)" says Spawny, pointing towards the opposite wall. Looking at the sign, it says, "Get three choices right in a row! Once you do, you'll be let go!"

"So all we have to do is get three right options in a row!" you say, taking out your pickaxe. Walking to the middle doorway, you listen closely. "Hmm…nothing behind here," you say.

"(Nothing behind here, either,)" says Spawny, listening to the doorway to your left. He then runs over to the one on your right. "(But I hear spiders behind this one!)"

"Let's try this one first," you decide. Mining the cobblestone, you are about to step through when you hear a "buzz" sound. "What? That wasn't right? How?" You look down the doorway and see why: it leads to a pit of lava. "D'oh!" Frustrated, you mine the leftmost door and walk through to another identical room. "Alright, let's listen a bit more carefully this time…"

"(Why can't you use your watch or something?)" Spawny suggests.

"It got caught in the filter," you explain, holding up your bare wrist. "See?"

"(Awww!)" Spawny groans, walking up to the first door and putting his ear up to it. "(Alright, this one has spiders now,)" he says. He then goes to the middle door. "(And this one has nothing!)"

"This one has nothing, too!" you say, putting your ear up to the final door. "Maybe you try hearing it - rabbits do have good hearing…"

Obliging, Spawny puts his ear up to the final door. "(Ooo! Yeah, I hear the lava!)" he says. "Use the middle door!" And so, you mine through the middle door, and a "ding" is heard.

"Alright, from now on, you do the listening," you instruct Spawny. "We'll have to do one more room than we could've, but we should be going with smooth sailing from here on out!"

Sure enough, with Spawny's improved hearing over your own, the next two rooms are conquered easily. The third room had it on the right, and the fourth room had it on the left. And then, right in the middle of the final room was the block of iron ore. "Alright, here we go!" you say, victoriously mining the block. The piece of raw iron flies into your inventory as the block shatters.

"(Yay! We did it!)" says Spawny, jumping up and down. "(Now let's meet up with the others!)"

No other challenges await you on the way back, and you return to the main room as soon as the others do. While Liam and Spawnette casually walk back in, Danny and Pork Chop go sliding out of their doorway as a large boom is heard. "Whoa! What the heck happened there?" you ask Danny.

"Let's just say that I don't know how Harrison Ford or whoever was in that one Time Bandits scene did it!" Danny responds, helping Pork Chop up."Anyway, got the raw iron?"

[BGM: Peter Hont - What You Came For]

"Sure do," says Liam, and you pull out your piece as well. "Let's get to smelting!" Liam places down the furnace he made the previous night, and you all put in the pieces of raw iron. One lump of coal and about half a minute later, Liam has enough iron ingots for a pickaxe, which he quickly makes. "And hello diamonds," he says, happily mining the ore blocking the passageway.

"So, Balancia, what happens now?" Danny calls into his inventory.

The allay flies out and claps her hands. "Now you walk through and survive the test of the first Keeper of Code," she explains. "But you all did pretty well on the first two tests, even the harder halves of the ones just now, so I have no doubt that you'll do well on this one, too!"

"Well, that's good to hear," you say, but then you focus on the "harder halves" bit. "Wait, what harder halves?"

"After we got the iron, we had to face a trickier challenge to get out," explains Liam. "Did you not have that happen?"

"Err…no…" you confess. The other two give you dirty looks. "Hey, we didn't know!"

"Alright, we'll talk about this later," says Danny, waving his arm. "In the meantime, we got this, right?"

"Well, we already faced a huge horde of mobs, gangermen, and several miscellaneous challenges today," says Liam. "I think we can handle this."

Danny nods. "Then let's go show this Keeper of Code what we can do!" he says. And with that, you march into the open passageway, preparing yourself mentally for what you'll have to face next.

To be continued...and next time: the first final test!

Next chapter: "The Floor is Lava" It may be a childish game normally, but now it's the final test the Maniacs will have to do in order to earn the first Cube of Balance! And making a tower while lava rises below you is no easy task! Can they pull through, or is this where their journey will end (you probably already know the answer...)?

Postface: Chapter complete! I was worried I wouldn't be able to live up to the hype I did last chapter, but I think I did it pretty solidly.

Trivia time! I feel like I said it before, but I'll say it again - the Trials of the Code are the main way I'm preserving the Minecraft aspects of this story by focusing on the real big components of Minecraft. I chose the game's code for the setting because venturing into the makeup of Minecraft sounded interesting. Of course, I didn't want it to be those components straight-up, otherwise there's no challenge! I decided on surviving the first night and mining for the first two challenges because they're kinda early-game stuff, almost like prepatory challenges. For the first night, I thought it would be cool to have a progression-style thing where when you accomplish one task, the next thing you need opens up, kinda like the advancement system in Java Edition, and it was cool to throw in a cobblestone generator. As for the mining portion, just a straight-up maze would be boring, so I had the players split up to tackle three different challenges. Liam's challenge is based around the naturally-generating abandoned mineshafts and the cave spiders you'd find in there. Danny's challenge is based around dungeons but also has references to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Time Bandits - I'm pretty sure you can figure out which is which! as for Kevin's challenge, I figured someone who was supposed to be the smart guy would be best suited for a game of wits. In addition, I snuck in something from Minecraft: Story Mode - Super TNT and the Formida-bomb! In Episode 3 of Season 1, the Formida-bomb was used to take down the Wither Storm, and I featured it here because using TNT to blow up a boulder sounded cool, but using something like the Formida-bomb would make it even cooler, right? That was my mindset, anyway. Also, the bit about iron ore now giving raw iron as of the Caves & Cliffs Update is true - the same applies to gold ore, too - it's so your inventory doesn't get clogged with both regular and deepslate ores!

That should be it! Please read, review, and share around, and I'll see you all next time for the final exam of this portion of the Code Trials! Stay diamond, everyone!

-Alfred
