WARNING: This is more or less a filler chapter in order to get Sora involved with the club more! UNFORTUNATELY SOME CHARACTERS ARE IGNORED SORRY I LOVE MORI, HONEY, KAORU, AND KYOYA BUT I DIDN'T NEED THEM A LOT FOR THIS CHAPTER
By the way IDK if this is clear but this Ouran fanfiction takes place in more current times (EDIT: It takes place in 2019 when this was first written lmao) Not back in the early 2000's. No flip phones :(((((
Chapter Two/ Operation: Sora Kawashima
Sora stood in front of the tall mirror she had in her bedroom, repeatedly messing with the same part of her hair out of nervousness. She felt a rush of insecurity grow in her chest. Surely, with there being so many interesting... characters at Ouran, she doesn't stick out either way, right?
Puberty had hit Sora like a truck. Her once messy short hair was now long and silky, her skin clear, hips and chest full; but despite being but of her middle school awkward phase, she still felt out of place. Especially in her high school uniform. Then again, it's hard to pull off anything this color.
Ouran was lenient with their uniform policy; unusually so, in fact. So instead of wearing the standard female uniform, she settled for the short-sleeved version. It was more or less the same as the standard female uniform: a yellow gown with a fitted-bodice, a white collar, and loose bow tie. The only difference being instead of the long, Juliet sleeves of the standard girls uniform, the short-sleeved version has loose, puffy, ruched sleeves with adjustable cuffs. Sora had also skipped putting on her petticoat, so her skirt lacked the iconic bell shape it was supposed to have.
Yeahhhh... This uniform sure is hideous.
"Sora?" A light voice peeped, clearly from that of a young man. The man who had been watching Sora's meltdown from a safe distance was no other than Minato Kawashima, Sora and Shouta's second oldest brother.
Minato has silky, long honey blonde hair and amber eyes. He was rather tall, but despite his height, handsome appearance, and overall cool personality and aura, the college student was far from intimidating. He gave his younger sister a bright smile, "Everything okay in here? You've been staring at yourself for a while."
"O-oh, Minato... Yeah I'm fine" She scratches her ear "Just.. first day jitters, that's all."
He blinks at her for a moment before letting out a snort, "This doesn't have anything to do with you getting into a fight with those Hitachiin twins?"
"Fuck!" Sora hisses, much to the amusement of her brother "News sure does travel fast huh? Who told you about that?
Before Minato could reply, Shouta chuckled from outside the door frame "Me." He confirms, poking a tongue out at his irritated sister. "Not that news wouldn't have reached us sooner or later, anyways.
He mockingly pats Sora (who was ten seconds away from decking him) on her head, mussing up her hair. "Only my sister can pick a fight with the most popular boys in our school in a span of an hour~"
"Yup!" Sora slapped his hand away and gave him a toothy grin "And I'll absolutely do it again if I have to" Shouta merely laughed in response and Minato shook his in disapproval, but still had a soft smile on his face.
Truthfully, the second oldest Kawashima son was extremely worried for his siblings at Ouran Academy. He doubts that Shouta will even get through first term without transferring or getting expelled, Kai, the youngest, is famously unfriendly and competitive, and Sora had somehow manage to become public enemy #1 on her tour.
Sora, noticing Minato had grew quiet, gives her older brother a bright, genuine smile. Light seemingly shined out from her and tears immediately welled in his eyes, "Ohhh~ My baby sister! Don't worry, I'm sure you can make amends with them! After all, who can stay mad at such a pretty young thing~?"
Sora looked herself up-and-down, getting a good look at her outfit. Pretty? Her outfit hardly made her look "pretty". Sora can barely even tolerate the sight of the long, nasty-yellow "monstrosity" expected attire of a female student at Ouran. She was almost jealous of the male uniform, which was much easier on the eyes.
Again, Ouran was super lenient regarding uniforms, but she highly doubts they'd let a female student walk around in male clothes for no reason.
"Thanks a lot, Minato!" Sora says, beaming at her older brother "No matter what happens today, I'll be alright!" She quickly scoops up her brown messenger bag in one hand and gives her brothers a confident thumbs-up with her other. Shouta smiles at his sister and gives Sora a thumbs up back.
He had obviously been one of the first to hear about his twin sister's now-iconic run-in with one of the Hitachiin twins; he would have to be completely dead and living under a rock to not hear about it! After all, anything regarding the host club members was the hot topic of the week.
Shouta personally found the host club members annoying, but 'to each their own' as they say.
[An hour later]
Sora scooted out of the backseat of her family's limo, "Thank you, Denji-san! I might have Minato pick me up, so don't wait for me if I'm not here right after classes end!" She said with a grin. Her driver nodded back at her and smiled, "If you decide not to stay long, I will have the three of you home before your mother* returns from work. Have a great day at school today, Ms. Kawashima."
With that, her chauffeur drove off, leaving Sora standing in the warm sun by herself. Kai had already been dropped off and Shouta had jumped out of the car to chase after a girl he had met on their first day of classes. Sora didn't mind being by herself, though. She liked being alone to admire the campus; Shouta found it annoying when Sora would stop to stare at the scenery. 'We're gonna see it almost every day from now on!' He'd always say to her. Sora ignores him whenever he complains. After all, there's nothing wrong with appreciating everything beautiful about Ouran. Sora closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, smiling.
"Why~ if it isn't Godzilla in the flesh~" A voice purred out to her. Sora felt her veins pop in annoyance, interrupting the deep breath she had been taking. "I gotta say, I'm a big fan of your movies! Although…" He twirled a finger in Sora's hair, "It seems like your skin has gotten even scalier since then, are you feeling okay?"
His fake-sweet tone made Sora's eye twitch, "Oh, that's cute." Sora puckers her lips, "Maybe my skin wouldn't be so bad if I didn't stress myself out so much staring at that fat zit right…" She got closer to Hikaru's face "Right there." Hikaru cocked an eyebrow, knowing good and well he didn't have zit. He felt confident he might win this one, and so did the girls surrounding the two. They stared, cheering the Hitachiin twin on in spirit.
"Oh really? Thanks for letting me know. I might have to ask one of your fleas for your skin care routine." He smirks, "You know... so my 'zit' will go away."
The boys cheering on Sora stared on, silently cheering for her to have a good comeback. Sora shrugs her shoulders, "Hey at least my 'fleas' have any ounce of talent."
Take the bait...
Hikaru raised both eyebrows, "C'mon senpai, you know I'm talented"
Bingo
"Oh~" With that, Sora started doing an...inappropriate motion with her curled up hand and mouth; moving her curled hand back and forth and pushing her tongue into her cheek while doing so. "I'm sure you are~ Very, very talented."
A stifled laugh from the crowd snapped Sora out of her rage. Now startled, Sora and Hikaru realized that yet another crowd had formed around them during their argument. Awkwardly, Sora turned around on her heel and ran away, disliking the loads of negative attention the crowd was giving her. Seeing her gone, Hikaru retreats back over to his brother, and now, the other host club members. Each of them (besides Kaoru) give Hikaru the same exhausted expression, except Tamaki, who had crumbled onto his knees due to Sora's "extremely vulgar" action.
Kyoya pushes his glasses up on his nose
"Must you always start such... unbecoming arguments with that girl?" He asked, giving Hikaru a disapproving stare. Hikaru shrugs his shoulders, trying to drop the topic. Unfortunately for him, no one was willing to forget this as soon as he wished. The girls around him all gave him smiles and went off their separate ways with comments like, "The brotherly love will prevail!" and "He'll win the next time!"
Though the other club members genuinely wished there wouldn't be a 'next time', this whole situation wasn't actually that bad for the club itself. Ultimately, all Hikaru and Sora's arguments caused was more love, support, and attention sent to both of them.
After Hikaru and Sora's first argument during her school tour, the host club had all done a background check on Sora. Though she had struck the members as rude and scary, from what Kyoya told them, Sora is a perfectly nice girl. Sixteen years old, rich, good grades- nothing about this girl is supposed to make her stand out. And yet...here we are.
Tamaki, still draped over, dramatically sighs to get the attention of the other hosts onto him "...Since Hikaru clearly won't allow the club and this girl to part ways…" he mumbles, quietly while slowly standing up
"SORA KAWASHIMA SHALL JOIN THIS CLUB!" He cheers, lifting his head up in determination. The twins and Haruhi all made a small noise to express their confusion. Though Tamaki seemingly enjoyed acting like a complete moron it's not as if he was actually dense. There's no way he couldn't see that Sora was completely, totally, 100% not interested in joining the host club?
Kaoru opened his mouth to respond, but Tamaki jumped towards Kyoya and stopped the younger twin from talking, "I've already made my decision and I have already formed a plan! We find out what 'type' Sora is, get her to befriend the rest of us while somehow managing to convince her to drop the negative relationship between her and Hikaru, and we gain a female comrade!"
Tamaki twirls around, continuing his speech "Haruhi gains a female friend, increasing Haruhi's own femininity and happiness in the process~!"
The blonde goes on-and-on, images of the two girls applying make-up on each other appearing behind him. "For weeks now, Haruhi has been on her own in this dirty boy world! But now, she shall gain a companion and peer who shall become a lifelong, girly-girl friend! This plan is sure to work!"
Haruhi sweat-drop in annoyance, Kyoya feels a headache come along, while Honey and Mori (but mostly Honey) give their excited nods of approval to Tamaki, much to his joy. The twins, however, stare at their club president with dry looks.
"Boss, while we're all for Haruhi becoming girly-" Kaoru began, dropping an arm around Hikaru
Hikaru wrapped his arm around Kaoru's waist in return, "-It's not like Sora is at all interested in cross-dressing to join the host club."
Tamaki 'tsk'ed at the Twins, smirking with pride. "I have absolutely zero interest in making her dress like a boy. Sora won't be a boy-host...Sora shall be a female ally! A hostess! Or a waitress perhaps? Or maybe even a manager of sorts-"
"But we already have Renge." The twins interject with blank stares
Tamaki takes no notice of their statement and continues "-A club member for the ladies who are too intimidated to come talk to any of us! Someone to help plan costumes and theme days! Someone to help Kyoya with merchandise~" Tamaki winks and raises a finger, "You underestimate me~~ I had that all planned out from the start~"
"Right" The twins sarcastically muse in unison "And she'll just magically want to join the club because of your 'plan'?"
Haruhi shook her head and attempted to sneak away from her fellow hosts, only to be stopped by a single look from Kyoya. Tamaki suddenly hardened his expression, looking at each member with intensity. He started pacing, taking the appearance of a military soldier. Tamaki pulled a chalkboard out and frantically started drawing on it. After a few moments, he had drawn out a diagram. "Gentleman! If we all play our parts, and find out what Sora likes and what type she is, we just might be able to gain her trust and gain another member of our beloved club!"
He slammed a finger on the board, "But we must all play our part to make this work! This is not just for fans of Sora, this is not just to put an end to the twins' and Sora's bickering, this is also for Haruhi!"
"Right" Honey cheers, pumping a fist in the air. Haruhi sighed, "Get Sora-senpai into the club. Got it." her voice dripped with reluctance and annoyance, but that did not phase the host club's president in the slightest.
Tamaki's eyes sparkled with excitement, "Operation Sora Kawashima is now underway!"
[Operation: Sora Kawashima has began]
{Classroom 2A, two hours later}
The classroom was silent, with each student all focusing their attention on the teacher droning. Japanese Literature was never an interesting class for anyone, so most students nodded off, trying to fight sleep. Sora intensely focused on the back of her teacher's head. She could hear a male student trying to gain her attention, so she just continued to focus on her teacher's thinning hair.
"Psssst, SORA!" Tamaki whispered, finally winning Sora's attention away from the teacher. Tamaki was usually never one to talk during lectures; but something here was much more important here than classic Japanese literature! The long haired ravenette darted her eyes back and forth from the teacher back to Tamaki, waiting for him to say something. Tamaki just continued to stare at Sora, sparkles in violet eyes. "What is is?" Sora finally answered, whispering in a irritated tone. The two students between Tamaki and Sora simply ignored them, not risking getting in trouble for gossip.
Tamaki snapped out of his thoughts, frantically tossing Sora a 'survey' he had written earlier.
The note accidentally hit the girl sitting to the right of Sora, though she just quickly handed it over to her out of fear she'd get Tamaki into trouble if she didn't. Sora reluctantly examined the note, furrowing her eyebrows together after reading each question. After mere minutes, Tamaki felt the folded note smack him in the cheek. Ignoring her murderous aura, he excitedly reopened the note.
{SURVEY: (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Do you like talking to the girls here at Ouran?: ? I just got here. I guess so?
Do you like the host club: Not particularly. If you do recall, I have quite an issue with two of them
Do you wanna be a hostess/waitress/part-time manager: Is this a joke?
Do you have too much time on your hands: ? No? Is this supposed to be insulting?
Do you, Sora Kawashima, want to join the host club :) : Not at all
Just a random question here, but who is the most attractive host club member in your opinion: That really tall one, Morinozuka-senpai}
"MORI-SENPAI?!" Tamaki screeched, extremely hurt by the answer not being himself. The teacher stared wide-eyed at the blond boy, who was almost in tears. Sora, of course, just stared at her feet and ignored Tamaki's outburst. Kyoya rubbed his eyes in irritation.
[Tamaki: Failed and hurt]
[Four hours later]
By the end of the day, most of the hosts' part of the plan had failed tremendously.
Tamaki's survey didn't make Sora realize any positive feelings she might of had about the host club.
Kyoya's threats didn't phase her.
Sora found Honey's begging and Mori's small smile cute -but it was not enough.
The twins' promise of peace and harmony was disrupted by Sora accidentally stepping on Kaoru's foot, which made him tease her about having the grace and look of a mob wife*. Hikaru's laughing just annoyed Sora even more.
[The plan: failing]
{Library Room #2}
All remaining hope was now dependent on Haruhi, who was staring at Sora from outside one of the school's libraries. Sora had changed right after classes were over, and was now wearing white jean shorts, a dark blue camisole, and a purple jacket with a small gold dragon design on the sleeves (much to the amusement of the twins, who had to resist the urge to point out how that made her look even more like a mob wife)
The outfit looked...cold. At least, that's all Haruhi really gathered from it. That, and the fact Sora didn't look like she wanted any more attention than she was already getting from the ogling boys in the library...And the ogling boys outside the library.
"She's so confident in her fashion!" Tamaki praised
"Haru-Chan! Sora-Chan likes books like you do!" Honey cheered from behind a waste basket, the twins nodded in agreement. "Go talk to her about that dorky stuff and maybe she'll listen to you!"
Oddly enough, even though Sora was in the library and had a bunch of manga placed around her, she wasn't reading. In fact, she was on the phone pouting at whatever she was being told, which caused Honey to coo at the sight of her cute expression. The twins nodded in approval, "You know~ She's actually kind of cute when she's not acting like a devil dog!" The twins said together, shrugging their shoulders. The bell tower rang it's tune, signaling that it was now five o'clock.
The remaining people in the library scurried out, either to get to their club activities, sports, or to get home. Sora remain seated, still talking. The host club boys all took this as Haruhi's signal to go talk to the dark-haired girl, so they pushed her inside the library and closed the large, dramatically loud doors.
Despite the doors slamming shut, Sora took no notice of the first-year host. She sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose, "Father, I just don't understand why you're upset. It's not that Shouta is trying to be difficult but he doesn't do well in structured places like this... No I'm not trying to make excuses for him, you called me, remember?"
Haruhi pauses. Yikes, this sounds private. The brunette looks for a way out of the library that didn't make any noise, but unfortunately found no exits. The honors student simply prayed that Sora was too immersed in her conversation to notice the first-year lurking nearby
"...I'm not trying to make you out to be the bad guy, okay? I'm just defending my twin brother. I'm telling you right now that kicking him it of the main house is excessive and unnecessary."
On the other side of the phone, a man can be heard giving his daughter long, dreary sigh as a response. His words were slurred, slow, and too hard to make out for Haruhi. Sora, however, can understand him perfectly
"If I'm being honest, I don't really care. Shouta just needs to finish high school however he can. You however will see to it that you thrive at Ouran Academy. The Suoh family deal in corporate financing, own much of the high real-estate in Japan, and dabble in school management. We need the Suoh's good word, okay? Just be a good girl."
The line went silent and the second-year girl sighs and sinks down onto the floor. Great. Even though he was so amused by her fighting on her first day, Sora's brother had managed to get expelled in record timing.
Turns out having cigarettes on campus and calling the teacher who found them a "bald bastard" was a big no-no for Ouran Academy. Go figure.
Oh well. Shouta does his own thing, Sora does hers. They both can live with that.
What the girl can't live with, is the fact her family will roast her over a fire with an apple in her mouth if he doesn't manage to make up with Suoh and his friends. Good thing the little brunette host has been watching the long haired girl from afar for, like, five minutes. Great timing.
"Hey," Sora waves over Haruhi, who flinches in shock at being caught. Sora chuckles "I won't bite. I just wanna talk for a second, promise" She says, patting the spot next to her on the floor.
Haruhi cautiously made her way to Sora, who was surprisingly...welcoming despite the fact Haruhi 1) was spying on her and 2) has only ever seen her mad before. Sora makes room on the spot besides her by moving around her stuff and the books she had out. Haruhi sat beside her, sitting criss-cross.
There was a brief, awkward silence between the two students. Haruhi wasn't sure what she was supposed to say in the first place. Tamaki had just sent her on her way with no formal instructions. And Sora? Wasn't sure where to start, really. Tell the twins she was sorry? Tell Tamaki she might actually take him up on that offer from earlier?
Man, Sora hopes that this little first-year dude doesn't hate her too much, since he seems like her only way to reconciling with the group.
Coming to the sudden realization they've never formally met before, Sora suddenly stuck her hand out to Haruhi. "I'm Sora Kawashima, a second year student!" Haruhi gently shook her hand, "I'm Haruhi Fujioka, first year student."
….
Oh.
Haruhi...
Fujioka?
[Lightbulb turns on]
The headmaster had told Sora and her brother about the Academy's first full-ride academic scholarship student. A young lady living with a single parent in a 'apartment' building! Sora remembered how impressed she was when she found out a commoner had done so well academically, the school just had to pay their whole tuition. It was never done before, and perhaps, would never be done again.
"Oh wow, you're the girl the headmaster told me about!" Sora smiled and pointed her finger at Haruhi's face "So you didn't wanna wear the standard girl uniform either?! I didn't know I could opt out and wear the male uniform!"
Haruhi's mouth drops and she lets our a small noise in surprise. Noticing the girls discomfort, Sora awkwardly retracts her finger and raises an eyebrow in confusion
"I... Long story short…" Haruhi began, "I kind of have to pretend to be a dude so that I can pay back a debt I owe." Haruhi scratched the back of her head, praying silently that no one else was in the library eavesdropping on the two girls. Sora's mouth shut tightly, as she stared wide-eyed at Haruhi in shock.
"Oh…"
'A debt? That's pretty weird' The second-year thinks to herself. 'It must be a debt to the host club specifically, because Haruhi Fujioka's full education is being paid for by the headmaster himself, so it's not like she owes anybody on the faculty anything.'
That makes the host club sound kind of...shady, but Sora doubts the situation is as bad as it sounds.
Haruhi nods, not taking any notice to Sora's deep thinking, "Besides; to answer your question? I couldn't really afford the girls uniform."
Sora gasped, turning dramatically white.
The Ouran uniform was like... dirt cheap. Only 275,000 yen* for the full set for high school girls.
Though no one can understand why, the sudden revelation that Haruhi could not afford a school uniform broke something in Sora's heart. Haruhi didn't notice though, and kept blankly staring down at her hands. Sora felt intense empathy towards her younger peer, and sighs sadly, "Dude, that sounds awful!"
"It's alright. I manage..." Haruhi shrugged, genuinely without a care in the world. Sora scoots her body closer to Haruhi's, now feeling a sense of closeness with the girl.
Though hanging out with the Hitachiin twins, that scary Ootori boy, two martial artists capable of crushing her spine in less than a second, and the headmasters son sounds... less than ideal, Haruhi seems... cool. Poor girl has been stuck working alone for these jerks?
When she thinks about it rationally, the pros do outweigh the cons. Reconciling with Suoh, gaining allies, becoming friends with Haruhi or anyone who visits the host club all sounds pretty good. It would make her father happy, keep her mother off her back, and, well, it wouldn't hurt to make more friends. The whole 'loner' thing gets boring after a while.
Sora jumps up, filled with sudden determination. Her sudden movement startles Haruhi, who merely looks up to her in confusion.
"Haruhi!" She exclaims, giving the brunette a toothy grin "I can't promise you I'll like being with those dumbasses, but you're super cool! I have no idea what I'm doing, like, at all... But trust me, you won't have to deal with those fuckers alone ever again!"
Sora reaches a hand downwards towards Haruhi, "Starting today, I'm gonna be a host!"
-Chapter End-
*Gigolos is another name for male prostitutes
*Remember that episode where they meet Kasanoda and fantasize about Haruhi being a yakuza wife? Same concept here. Sora jut has a more tough exterior and sharper features than most of the other girls.
*Roughly $2,031.85 USD. Remember, Sora's rich af. So whenever narration is focused on her it has rich girl mindset just like she does.
I know this chapter lacked Hikaru/Sora action but the girl has to hang out with the other hosts before she gets thrown into a romance.
BTW guys say goodbye to the last full fledge Hikaru VS Sora insult battles, now they have to be all buddy-buddy ;)) Nahhh but fr this was the last big one ((Maybe ;)) uwu))
Fun facts of the day about Sora:
-Her and Shouta's birthday is December 17th. Our spicy lil Sagittarius twins
-She has a small crush on Mori-senpai, but like? Who doesn't?
