Chapter Four/ Kyoya and Sora's awkward first date!
Everything was absolutely perfect today at Ouran Academy. Classes were easy, the sun was shining, the hosting was on par, and the eight members of the host club were a sight for sore eyes today in particular in their Fruits Basket themed cosplay. Because Haruhi suited the costume most, she was a "boy" Tohru Honda and the rest of the members were assigned random members of the zodiac to act as.
Well, with the obvious choice of the rabbit zodiac, Momiji Sohma, role going to Honey and the role of stoic and tough Hatsuharu going to Mori.
After the guests had all left and every one got out of their costumes, clean up was fully up and running.
[Host Club clean up is on]
"What do you mean 'host club clean up'? I'm the only one doing anything." Haruhi mumbles, spraying and then wiping away the text box in the air. Though it was everyone's job to help clean up the room a bit, Honey was doing his usual activity of eating sweets, Mori was slightly practicing kendo, Tamaki and Kyoya were discussing future costumes, and the twins were bothering Sora (who was also no help and was just messing with the twins back)
Sora pinches Hikaru's cheek and shoves him from her side, "Sorry, Haru! I was just trying to get myself in a good mood before getting home!" Hikaru and Sora give each other comedic glares while she talks, causing sparks of anger to fly around.
Kaoru leans over the second year girl and rests his arm on her head "Were you in a bad mood or something, senpai?" He asks, "I thought you would love the anime theme today."
"Oh don't get me wrong- I thought today was super fun…" Sora's left eye quickly twitches in annoyance "But the thought of going home puts me in the worse mood imaginable."
"...Why?"
Sora rubs her temples at the thought of her family, "Usually it's all fun and games at home, however, Keito and Minato are still at home which serves me a huge problem."
Haruhi pauses, looking back over her shoulder at her fellow hostess "Keito and Minato? Who are they?"
"My older brothers." Sora answers while flicking Kaoru's forehead, causing him to step back and get his weight off of her head. The twins regroup together and put their arms around each others shoulders, "Wait, just how many siblings do you have?" they ask together in unison. Sora puts a finger on her cheek in thought.
"Uhhh, as far as I know? Just four." She starts counting off on her fingers, bubbled images of each of her siblings appearing with each count. "Keito, Minato, Shouta, and Kai, who's the youngest Kawashima kid. I was technically my dad's third child."
"Wow~!" Honey exclaims in astonishment "You have a pretty big family, Sora-chan!"
Sora nods tiredly, "They're cool and all, but-" She sighs "After the whole ordeal with Kyoya over the weekend, Keito is convinced I screwed it up and is on my ass about the 'family image' and Minato is convinced I'm heartbroken and in need of saving. It's so annoying! And-"
As Sora is rambling, each member of the host club (minus Kyoya; who is staying quiet out of amusement) grow more and more confused and inch up closer to the second year girl. As soon as they are close enough to all breathe on her, Sora jumps up in surprise and stops mid-sentence. She frantically looks around and examines each of their confused expressions.
"What?!" Sora demands
They all lean even closer to her, "What ordeal with Kyoya?!" they all ask together. Sora flicks her eyes back and forth between the six other hosts and to Kyoya. After a few moments of emotionless typing, Kyoya pauses to look back at his fellow members.
"Oh? For one whole day me and Sora were engaged to be married." Kyoya smirks coldly with the glare on his glasses masking the look in his eyes "You didn't know that?" He teases.
...
...
"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?"
Kyoya's POV
[Last Saturday]
"Kyoya, I need you to be available later today. I've scheduled a marriage meeting for you this afternoon."
The room is just as cold and gray as it always is. The sun was shining down through the large, elaborate windows but no warmth could be felt. The Ootori household was always like this though so it's not like it bothered Kyoya. It was just another normal day and this was just a conversation bound to arise sooner or later. Without looking up at his father at all, Kyoya nodded, chewing the warm bread that was placed in front of him.
Yoshio nodded back, "Good. She's second-year girl but she is from a slightly troublesome family... In fact, it's a miracle the family is even still as powerful as they are. However, if we can connect our families together, our hospitals and police force can be partnered with their agencies all across Asia."
"This is the girl whose father founded and owns A.K Entertainments?" Mrs. Ootori asked, looking up at her husband with her chin in hands.
Yoshio nodded in response, confirming Kyoya's wife-to-be's power. "They practically run the entertainment industry in both Japan and South Korea, and as if that weren't enough, they are starting open performing arts schools in Hong Kong, have established their own news station in the Philippines, and starting to manufacture their own make-up brands as well."
"As you can see, Kyoya" Yoshio gives his son a cold stare "It would be very beneficial for you to make this meeting work out."
His words jabbed a small pain into Kyoya's chest, but the youngest Ootori quickly shook that feeling off. His father's wording did not slip past him at all. Instead of "it would be beneficial for our family" he said "it would be beneficial for you"
"Yes sir" Kyoya responded with a smile, "I'll do everything in my power to make sure this meeting goes in our best interests."
'It won't be hard to impress you today, father. I'll make sure that this secures business between the Ootori's and this girls family. This will be a piece of cake'
"Ehhhhh…."
"…"
...
...
"Uh… hi…Ootori-San.."
Fuyumi Ootori, the now-twenty six year old daughter of Yoshio Ootori and sister of Kyoya, had tagged along to properly introduce her younger brother to the family of interest. Mrs Ootori and Yoshio were both too busy with work to attend, and Kyoya's brothers, Yuuichi and Akito, were in training together. That left poor, clueless Fuyumi in charge of handling this awkward situation all by herself.
This… extremely… AWKWARD situation
"Oh goody!" Fuyumi clapped her hands together excitedly "You two have already met? Kyoya~, how come you didn't let me know you and Sora-chan were already friends?"
Sora Kawashima, the newest member of the host club, sat across from Kyoya awkwardly. Sora's long black hair remained loose but her posture was much more straight-up and stiff than usual. And instead of her usual bold style, she was wearing a long blue coat and a white turtle-neck sweater with black slacks. Undoubtedly so, she was forced to come here. Kyoya rubbed his eyes in irritation.
'This can not be happening'
"Ahhhha ahaha." Sora attempted to laugh, but it came out as a small cough instead. Sensing the weird tension in the air, Fuyumi shot up dramatically and rubbed her hands together "Well I-I better leave you two alone! No use for me in here!"
The door slammed in seconds and the two classmates were forced to stare at each other in silence.
Sora's eyes twitched "You know... I knew it was you but I didn't think it was you, you know?"
"How many families do you know that have this influence over health care and police forces?" Kyoya's usual fake-politeness made no appearance. After all, this wasn't just another girl, it was a fellow member of the host club. Sora, though surprised by Kyoya's rude tone, smiled at his attitude and allowed her posture to relax.
She leaned forward, cheek in hand "That's a cute attitude there, but I can give you one better: How many A.K Entertainment owners are there? Just one, right? How did you not know it was me?" Sora teasingly pokes her cheek with her finger, feigning thought "In fact, Akio Kawashima only has one high school aged daughter… Me, right?"
Kyoya felt his blood pressure go up at the image of someone as stupid as Sora being so sarcastic with him, but he manages to hold his temper together by a thread. Truthfully, Kyoya was half-listening when his father was describing Sora at breakfast. Who the girl was did not matter, the only thing that actually mattered was how Kyoya was going to charm said-girl.
Being a member of a host club has a surprising amount of benefits, one of which being that it has strengthened Kyoya's prior skill of being able to easily charm his female classmates. Seeing Kyoya's anger and state of thought, Sora stops her rambling and places a hand on Kyoya's shoulder, snapping him out of his state of mind.
"Ootori? I was just teasing" Sora sighs, quickly removing her hand "Sorry...I think the 'beautiful and brainless trio' is starting to rub off on me."
An image of Tamaki and the twins float over the two second year classmates, sounds of the three of them laughing softly erupts from the background.
"..Beautiful and brainless trio?" Kyoya repeated. Though it's a name that truly suits Tamaki and the twins it was also something Kyoya had never heard from anyone before. Sora nodded.
"One of my usual guests, Karen Abe, called them that once and it just kind of stuck with me."
Kyoya thought for a moment. Karen Abe: a first year with light auburn hair that was a little past shoulder length, the daughter of Goro Hojo and Sakura Abe. Gojo Hojo was just another working commoner but Sakura Abe was the daughter of a famous filmmaking family, thus making 'Abe' the family name. Karen was missing for two years during middle school due to being sickly but came back for high school. She's cute and well-liked, but also the victim of vicious rumors.
Kyoya rests his chin into his hand, "...Tell me about your guests."
If this marriage meeting is going to be a waste of time; might as well learn something.
Sora seemed surprised by Kyoya's interest, but she shrugged her shock off quickly. She looked up at the ceiling in thought.
"Uhh… Well...Nao Kishinuma is in our grade but in class 2B. Nao is super cute but is insecure about her light brown hair and thick eyebrows, kind of a tsundere and an otaku…" Kyoya grew more and more irritated but did not stop Sora's rambling out of fear of missing out on information. Sora did not seem to notice her fellow hosts annoyance
"...Nao's parents just got divorced so she's kind of annoyed with guys at the moment, you know? Her mom is THE Sayaka Kamiya* and yet Mr. Kishinuma has an affair? Crazy! At least Mr. Kishinuma is still the head of their sports agency, or else Nao would be losing money faster than you could blink!"
Kyoya tuned Sora out for a moment. So... Nao's family was the Kishinuma-Kamiya mix. The Kishinumas dealt with sports management and the Kamiya's were simply just celebrities of all sorts; models, athletes, social media stars.
"…And Karen?" Kyoya asked, allowing Sora's rambling to catch his attention once again.
"Karen is cute, isn't she?" Sora replies with a bright smile on her face, "Karen's just such a bitch! But who could even blame her? She has heart problems that kept her out of school for a couple of years and what does everyone do? Spread rumors saying she was in jail! And now the story is that she's related to Sade Abe* and that Karen's family had to leave Japan for years because they were hiding Sade Abe! That doesn't even make sense, right?!"
'Ah, this makes sense now'
The image of Sora, Nao, And Karen all sitting together at the table took over Kyoya's mind. The image turned black and white and all other noise in the room, including Sora's rambling, went silent as Kyoya went into thought.
'Nao and Karen are from turbulent families and have trouble with their classmates and standing up for themselves... No wonder they latch onto someone like Sora'
Sora, who had long ago stopped talking and was just watching Kyoya think, smiled gently at the sight of her classmate and fellow host. Kyoya was a lot more easy to see right through than one would initially think. Kyoya eventually makes eye contact with Sora, which snaps him out of his deep state of thought. He raises his eyebrows suspiciously, "…What?"
Sora nonchalantly shrugs, "You're a bit too easy to read, Ootori-San. I could tell you were thinking somewhere along the lines 'Wow, it makes sense that Nao and Karen would like Sora' right?"
Once again Kyoya mentally pinches himself for letting someone as stupid as Sora catch him slipping, but he keeps his expression blank. Sora closes her eyes and tilts her head with a smile on her face, "Can I ask you a personal question, Ootori-San?"
"…Maybe." He replied honestly.
Sadness flashes in her eyes for just a second, which Kyoya catches. "You've researched about my family, no? Weren't you all worried about letting me into the host club?"
[April 30th; three weeks ago]
"Did you hear that confidence!? The excitement in her voice, the passion in her eyes!" Tamaki went on-and-on, excited by his classmate's proclamation that had just taken place a few moments ago. Once Sora Kawashima said the words, "Starting today, I'm gonna be a host!" in one of the libraries, the other host club members quickly scrambled back to the music room. All except for Haruhi, who was still by the second-year girl's side.
Tamaki twirled around, overjoyed by the fact another girl was now in the club to keep Haruhi company. Honey, who was also happy, looked up at the indifferent twins, "Kao-chan~ and Hika-chan~; you don't seem to be too happy?"
Kaoru smiled back at his senpai, "Oh it's cool. We're just kind of surprised." Hikaru rolled his eyes but still allowed a small smile to creep onto his face, "Sora-senpai was gone for almost two years after randomly calling us a dacryphile* so seeing her in the club will take some getting used to."
"…Well, she actually only called you a dacryphile, Hikaru."
Everyone in the club was excited and all expressed it differently. The only member who stayed neutral was, unsurprisingly, Kyoya. He stayed on his laptop, researching, and kept writing notes in his black notebook. The glare on his glasses kept his expression hidden but the look on his face under his glasses was not too kind to begin with. After taking a break from talking and twirling, the sight of Kyoya's worried look caught Tamaki's eye. Tamaki approached Kyoya reluctantly, "Kyoya, what's the matter?"
"…troublesome…."
Tamaki leaned closer, unable to hear Kyoya's mumbling over the other members talking "What?"
"Her family is far too... troublesome" Kyoya repeated. Though he usually kept stuff like this to himself, he turned the laptop screen slightly to the side, allowing Tamaki to see it. Tamaki sat down next to his best friend and read all that was on the screen.

"Big family… Successful…" Tamaki murmured with a sad smile, "…but there's a catch, isn't there?"
"Unfortunately…" Kyoya pushed up his glasses and clicked onto a new folder. "...there is."
An image of the twenty-five (almost twenty-six) year old Keito Kawashima fills the screen. He was frowning in the picture but it did not make him look any less handsome. His clean-cut look, his dark hair and his dark eyes were typical for a Japanese man, but his look was pretty surprising seeing how unique his other siblings all looked. Minato's picture came next, his long, super light brown hair was tied in a man-bun and he amber eyes to match. His picture had him holding up a bass guitar and a playful expression his face.
Kyoya skipped the Kawashima twins and went straight to Kai Kawashima. Kai is in her last year of middle school at Ouran and was well-liked despite a surprisingly quiet personality. She has dark, red-brown hair that is cut so sharply it flares up at the ends and hazel eyes. She's smiling in her picture and is waving a hand up.
"…And then finally…."
Kyoya opens the school headshots of Shouta and Sora from middle school. Both looked the same, Shouta still has his slightly long black hair and piercings and Sora overall just looked the exact same but now sports longer hair.
"Anything you notice, Tamaki?" Kyoya asked. Tamaki, though oblivious at times, was not a complete fool. And since this a sensitive topic for him as well, Tamaki knew exactly what Kyoya was hinting at.
He looks down blankly, "They are all illegitimate, right? Is that what you mean?"
Kyoya pushed up his glasses again, "Well, not all of them. The oldest does actually seem to be the son of Akio and Nagi Kawashima, as for the rest... They seem to share a father but all have different mothers."
It was a well known fact to anyone who paid the Kawashima's any sort of attention. To her credit, Nagi Kawashima made sure no articles speculating their marriage or the legitimacy of their children were ever to be published without a massive lawsuit. However, no amount of money in the world could change genetics.
Before Tamaki could go off on an emotion-based tangent, Kyoya held a hand up "I understand that this isn't out in the open, but there will surely be those who have figured it out. Not everyone will be kind to her. After all, Tamaki, topics like these are quite...controversial." Tamaki looked at the picture of the young Sora, whose brown eyes resonated with Tamaki's own violet ones. Tamaki's shoulders sunk sadly as he thought for a moment.
"…No matter. I still want her in this club."
'As expected'
"Are you sure? With how public-based her family is and how open and…" Kyoya looks over at the twins, memories of Sora and Hikaru's arguments flooding his brain "..loud she is this might cause trouble."
Tamaki simply looked his vice-president in the eyes. Kyoya smirked
"As you wish."
...
"…No. We weren't all worried about letting you in." Kyoya sips out of the glass that was left in front of him, "If we were worried you wouldn't be with us."
It wasn't the whole truth but it wasn't a lie either.
His answer plants a strange expression on Sora's face, as if she was trying to understand what Kyoya was saying. Her expression was unreadable for a second before a small smirk graced her face. The amused look in her eyes gives her away:
She didn't believe him.
Sora laces her fingers together and leans forward. "Just for the record? It's fine if you were." She says matter-of-factly "But trust me, I'm not gonna cause you any particular trouble."
Kyoya raises a brow. The vice-president trusted that Sora had no malicious intent, that's for sure. There's nothing she'd gain from making a genuine enemy out of any of them.
Still
No one is silly enough to join this club just because of Haruhi's status as the only girl and only commoner. Again, Kyoya trusted that Sora had no malicious intent. But she had an intent nonetheless. A motive in which he needs to discover soon, just in case not knowing ends up punishing him later. Sora smirks, "Are you, like, wondering why I even wanted to join the club, Ootori-San?"
...Okay, this is getting ridiculous
Ignoring Kyoya's slight twitch, Sora looked down at her hands, nervously picking at her nails. The third Ootori son pushed up his glasses, observing her sudden meek demeanor.
"If I'm being honest.. My father probably wants to do business with the Suoh's." She confessed, "He was mad my brother managed to get kicked out of Ouran, so he wanted me to kiss Tamaki's ass, talk to Tamaki's father, put in a good word with them both.. that sort of thing... but honestly-"
'Interesting.. so she joined for the sake of her father?'
Kyoya frowned. Despite her stating this, and despite her most-likely being truthful, Sora had yet to talk about anything business related. Honestly, she wasn't even particularly nice to Tamaki. Kyoya brings his cup to his lips, taking a polite sip of his drink to mask his skepticism.
"-that's kind of messed up. I don't want to take advantage of any one of you." Sora looked up to make eye contact with Kyoya, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"I'm not the type to mix business and pleasure. I'll make sure my family drama never affects any of you, if that's what it takes for you all to allow me to stay."
Kyoya paused for a moment before glancing off to the side. So, she didn't want to take 'advantage' of any of them? Was she simply too nice to want to get involved with anything business related? Did she like them all too much to see them as business partners? Or perhaps, there was something else? Something that Sora doesn't want to risk the others knowing. Kyoya didn't know,
But he'd find out.
He looked back at his classmate. Though he would still have to look into her, the vice-president found he now had a good understanding of what type of person she is. He offered her a small nod. "I don't see any reason for you to be kicked out."
And that was actually the truth.
Sora stared blankly for a second before letting a slight blush color her cheeks in joy. She grins playfully at the him, "Thank you, Kyoya~ You sure are a nice guy, huh?" Slightly confused, the boy opens his mouth slightly but soon closes it, deciding to just take it as a compliment.
Before another word could be spoken amongst the two, the door to the private room of the restaurant the two hosts were in slid open too suddenly. Minato Kawashima, the twenty-three year old brother of Sora huffs tiredly with his hands on his knees.
He shoots straight up, startling Sora and Kyoya, and clutches his long light brown hair in his hands, "I... found you…." He breathes out. Sora and Kyoya both share the same look of shock and confusion.
"W-What are you doing, Minato?" Sora asks, eyebrow twitching awkwardly. Minato ignores his younger sister and stomps forward. Once he reaches the table he slams a hand down in front of Kyoya, causing Sora to jump. One of the waiters outside the door awkwardly watches the ordeal with a bottle of wine in hand. Minato gets in Kyoya's face angrily, "You! Are you trying to marry my sister!?" He demands, tugging on Sora to make her stand up and hugging her against his chest.
Kyoya pauses for a moment to say an answer that was somewhat obvious to everyone else in the room:
"No, no I am not." He replies to the frantic and overdramatic Minato.
Kyoya's eye twitches due to the similarities between this sight and the image of Tamaki doing something along the same lines with Haruhi. Sora gives Kyoya a pleased look before being swept up awkwardly by her only-slightly taller older brother.
Minato puts Sora into his arms bridal style and smooshes his cheek against her own, "Shtop i' Minacho! You'rwe embarrashing ush!" Sora says awkwardly while her face is pressed against her brother's. Once again, a wave of deja vu washes over Kyoya.
"Good! Marriage isn't the only way to do business after all!" Minato screams, marching out of the door with Sora in hand. Sora's embarrassed protests are ignored passionately by Minato and Kyoya simply just stares on at the two blankly. Minato looks back and points a finger at Kyoya, "A scoundrel like you will never be worth my precious baby sister's time! Don't forget that!"
...
...
[An obvious example of a sister complex]
The waiter awkwardly comes in and sets both the bottle of wine and check onto the table. Fuyumi soon walks in as the room grows deafeningly silent with a smile on her bright, happy face. She gently pats Kyoya's shoulders, "I'm guessing it went well, Kyoya!"
[Back to now]
"So yeah!" Sora finishes, clapping her hands happily. "That was a mess!"
The room was stunned to complete silence. The idea of Kyoya and Sora even being on a date at all was enough to gross the host club out enough to be quiet; but for the two of them to potentially be engaged? Disgusting. Tamaki was crying and nuzzling his head into the crook of Kyoya's neck (much to Kyoya's chagrin), hurt by the fact he is just now hearing about this. Haruhi was the first to shake off her shock and awkwardly put the trash and bottles she had been gathering up into a garbage can in the room "Well... at least you guys settled things properly. Were your parents mad?"
Sora shook her head, "My dad didn't care and my mom didn't even know I was going on a marriage meeting. Like I said, it's just Keito and Minato who have been getting on my nerves." Sora scratches her neck awkwardly, "I can't speak for Kyoya, but since we still decided to partner with the Ootori family without the use of marriage I think no one truly cares now."
Kyoya smirks, which silently confirms Sora's claim. Soon enough, everyone goes back to their own casual activities and banter, allowing the topic to shift away from the Sora-Kyoya moment. Haruhi, who has now finished cleaning the room all by herself, allows herself to look at Sora (who was arguing with Hikaru about who has uglier hands) and at Kyoya, who had just thrown Tamaki off of him.
'I can't believe Kyoya-senpai almost got engaged to Sora-senpai... Those two are way too different to be happy with each other... But then again, Kyoya and Tamaki-senpai seem to be close even though they are different' Haruhi thinks to herself
After a few moments of mulling it over, Haruhi just shrugs.
'Well, whatever... Hopefully no one else gets engaged or causes any more problems'
