Despite her sore arms from her match the previous night, Dawn decided to work it off with her sessions at Berserk. As soon as he arrived in her gym wear, the first thing she noticed were two girls teasing a boy in front of Sakura. Dawn recognized him as the boy who she, Sakura, and Elena met at the park: Yoshi.
"Quit it." Yoshi said with red cheeks.
"What?" said one of the two girls. This girl had a sharp canine tooth in her smile. "We just love telling stories about our brother."
"They're embarrassing." Yoshi said.
"Oh, grow some thicker skin, bro." said the other girl. "I mean, if you're going out with someone we're working with, you gotta expect us to tell her some of our favorite stories about you growing up."
"Take it easy, Yoshi." Sakura said. "I actually think that was cute."
Yoshi's cheeks reddened making the idol giggle. Dawn smile and approached. "So you finally asked him out, huh, Sakura?" The two other girls turned to Dawn and examined her.
"That's right." Sakura stated.
"Well, who might you girls be?" Dawn asked turning to the others.
"Remember the Hirano sisters I told you about?" Sakura asked. "This is them. The girl with the tooth is Maya. The other one is Selena."
"So what's the real difference between the two of you?" Dawn asked.
"Well, I'm a lot tougher." Selena said. "Maya here can be a bit of a girl sometimes."
"Not cool, sis." Maya said. "I can hold my own in the ring."
"Remember your last match when you lost to that one girl who's dressed like a green cheerleader?" Selena asked.
"Hey! In my defense, Excavator Sakuya is in the League of Evil. She had backup."
"Now, who's embarrassed?" Yoshi asked with a smug look on his face.
"Well, enough about us." Selena said. "Let's talk about you, Bee. We missed you at the tryouts."
"Yeah, but I passed with flying colors." Dawn bragged. "And I won my first match, in case you didn't see."
"We saw." Maya said. "But hey, Hikari's a tough one to beat, so I'll give you some points."
"Don't bother!" cried out a voice that had everyone's heads turning. Dawn turned around only after she growled. Everyone saw the masked League of Evil member, Hornet, there with at least two other girls in black outfits. "If that bumbler deserves any points, it should be pity points." That earned a scornful growl from Dawn.
"Hornet." Misaki said. "It's rare for you to come on over, especially after you, Digger, and the others said you were working out in your own private hideout. What's the occasion?"
"I just wanted to see the new talent for myself." Hornet said with a cocky attitude. "Queen Bee. Hehehe. I never would have thought you'd come this far, Dawn."
"Wait." Sakura said. "You know Dawn?"
"Oh, we know each other all right." Dawn replied still keeping her angry glare at Hornet. "Long time no see, Beatrice."
"It's Hornet now. And I'd watch your attitude if I were you. Hornets are known to be much more vicious than bees. So keep that mouth shut or I'm going to tear you apart… again." Dawn closed her fists roughly at that last word.
"Again?" Yoshi asked. "How do you know each other?"
"You didn't tell them?" Hornet asked. "Well, allow me to answer." Dawn didn't attempt to stop her. She just kept shooting daggers at her. "You all gave 'Queen Bee' a push ever since she arrived here. Well, I'm here to set the record straight. She's not some special talent as you think she is. In fact, I've beaten her… twelve times before!"
The gym looked at Dawn with surprise filling their eyes. The Queen Bee visibly showed her gritting teeth.
"Is that right?" Rio asked.
"Yeah. The truth is, your 'queen' can barely make up as a court fool in the ring!" Hornet kept insulting. "Back in America, the first three times I beat her were pretty sweet. The next four times were easy. And the last five were downright humiliating for her! I just loved using her as a punching bag. And so did the rest of the girls in our old gym! We actually made punching bags with her picture on them!"
Silence filled the workout area. It was broken when Queen Bee yelled and charged at Hornet. But before she could reach her, the other LoE girls grabbed her by her arms and held her back.
"YOU TRAITOR! I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU REGRET…" Hornet shut her up with a kick to her face.
"Hey!" Misaki shouted as she separated Dawn from the goons. "You know the rules, Hornet! No brawls between Berserk wrestlers unless it's an official match or a sparring session!"
"Well, unfortunately, I don't think I'll be giving you either of those." Hornet said.
"What? Don't tell me you're scared of me now!" Dawn shouted.
"Please." Hornet scoffed. "I simply have nothing to do with you. If an undeserving upstart like you thinks you can really handle the big girls, you're going to have to earn it. It was nice talking to you again, Dull N' Broken. I hope you don't move back to America real soon. It was a lot of fun tormenting you again." On that note, she and the other girls turned around and left through the front door.
Dawn grunted as she sat in a bench taking a sip of her water. She sighed when Sakura, Rio, Yoshi, and Misaki approached her. The rest of the gym resumed their normal workout.
"What?" Dawn asked. "I'm a little on edge, so be careful with what you say."
"All right." Rio said. "First of all, what was all that between you and Hornet? She said she beat you a dozen times in America."
Dawn sighed. "All right. It's about time I told somebody the truth. Yes, Hornet and I got started in the wrestling business around the same time in America. Only back then, she was just known as Beatrice Harper. Not only that, but her parents owned the gym we wrestled at."
"Seriously?" Misaki asked. "Hornet never told us that."
"Not surprising." Dawn said. "Even though her parents owned it, she had no love towards that gym. She always thought herself better than that place."
"So what does this have to do with you?" Sakura asked.
"…When I was a girl, my dad got two tickets to a match between Jackal Tojo and Sayuri Rogue. As soon as I saw that match, it sparked an interest inside of me. And that spark turned into passion. I've always wanted to be a wrestler since then, despite my mom's protests. I got my start at the same gym Beatrice was. Back then, I went under the ring name of Dawn Breaker. However… I quickly earned the status of jobber."
"What?" Sakura gasped. "You kept losing matches too? What move was it?"
"For your information, I didn't keep losing to a specific submission technique! Every match I went at, whether it's against Beatrice or anyone else who joined, I was either pinned, submitted, or counted out. One time, a news reporter was covering my gym and challenged me to a sparring match. Despite her complete lack of experience, she made me tap out with a sleeper hold in just ten quick seconds. After seventy-one straight losses without a single win, Dawn Breaker became known to the rest of the roster only as Dull N' Broken."
"You gotta be kidding me." Rio said.
"Wow. That's even bigger than my streak." Sakura said.
"So what happened?" Yoshi asked.
"Well, I was on the verge of quitting and giving up my dream." Dawn said. "Then, I was talked out of it by another wrestler at my gym, Lyra Booker. With a few weeks of very helpful tips, I finally got my first win."
Sakura took a moment to exchange smiles with Misaki. They both remembered when they were each losers in the ring until their mentors gave them a lesson.
"So you're angry at Hornet because she used to bully you?" Rio asked.
"Not exactly." Dawn said. "You see, shortly before my first win, Beatrice saved up enough money to move to Japan. Now, she wasn't the best wrestler, but she did bring a lot of viewers. It was enough for us to get by. But when she showed up one day, said she was done with us, and left for the first flight to Japanese wrestling, things started plummeting for us. We were losing viewers. Immediately after I got my first win, the Harper's announced that our gym was closing. Kinda ironic that the first match I win would be the last match we had. Obviously, I had a lot of resentment toward Beatrice for leaving us to go bankrupt. So I decided to carry on the legacy of my gym by adopting its name as my new ring name: Queen Bee. After tracking her down to Japan and getting some experience, I followed her here. I told you before that I loved wrestling and that was one of my two reasons for joining Berserk. Now, you know the other one."
After that explanation, the people around her were speechless.
"Wow." Sakura said. "Sorry to hear all that."
"So now, you know the truth." Dawn said. "Does that change anything?"
"All that changes is how alike we are." Sakura said. "I mean, most of us had terrible records when we started."
"Si." Yoshi agreed.
Misaki nodded.
"Whoa." Queen Bee said. "You two had losing streaks too?"
"It's like this gym is a magnet for people who started off as losers." Rio said. "I mean, I didn't have a streak like that, but still…"
"Anyway, I understand you." Sakura said. "The whole reason I went pro was to get back at Rio for hurting me and Elena. Now, here I am training to be the strongest in the world. In a way, I see a lot of myself when I see you."
Dawn laughed softly. "I appreciate the comment, but should you really say all that in front of your boyfriend?"
Yoshi blushed. "Whoa! I wouldn't call us boyfriend and girlfriend just yet! I mean, we went out one time last night, and…"
Sakura chuckled. "Well, I am open for a second date."
"Madre de dios." Yoshi exclaimed. "You are?" Sakura nodded.
"Dawn, I am sorry to hear of your past." Misaki said. "I understand you too. And if you want a match against Hornet, I'll see if I can do. But just to warn you, she'll do whatever it takes to win."
Dawn stood up with determination in her eyes. "I welcome it. Whether it's interference from her goons or a weapon she smuggled in, I don't care. I'll go through them with everything I've got."
Rio grinned and crossed her arms. "I guess she belongs here after all."
Author's Note: Another chapter done. And now, for those of you who haven't read Queen Bee's plot in Xtrema, you now know her story. In Xtrema, I also had her have a rivalry with the Tiger Mask W character, Queen Elizabeth. I chose to exclude her here since this is a Wanna Be the Strongest in the World fanfic and not a crossover universe.
What comes next? That's for you to predict. Any and all comments are welcome.
