I'm back!
Thank you Black Dragon 42 for the review and all the new followers and favorites!
On to the next chapter!
Yuri looked up at the giant shrine before knocking on the sliding door. A few days after retrieving all of the treasures she had received a letter stating she was requested to appear at Genkai's shrine with no other information except a time and a date. When the door opened she offered a smile as Genkai appeared.
"Master Genkai."
She greeted with a low bow.
"Yuri. Thank you for accepting my invitation."
Yuri straightened her back and followed Genkai into her home.
"Of course. But, why did you request me?"
She questioned as the pair sat at a table for tea.
"I'm getting older and I am looking for an apprentice to train."
Yuri nodded, she had heard about Genkai retiring.
"I am requesting your assistance in helping me find this apprentice."
Yuri smiled.
"Of course. You trained my healing abilities after all. The least I can do to repay you is to help with this."
Genkai smiled at the young vixen. Many years ago, after Yuri had came to the human world in the form of a human child with no memory, Genkai was approached by Koenma to train the fox on how to hold her glamor and how to be a healer. While never learning all of Genkai's techniques, Yuri had been an excellent student and had absorbed everything she had been taught and advanced her skills as she aged. Genkai also had been the one to explain to the vixen why her tears turned into gems and why it was important for her to never show that weakness in the human world.
"There will be a tournament tomorrow to determine who will be my apprentice. I understand that Koenma's new Spirit Detective will be here."
Yuri smiled.
"That will be Yusuke, my cousin."
Genkai nodded.
"I also suspect this kind of tournament will draw in demons as well."
Yuri nodded.
"You're talking about Randou."
Genkai closed her eyes.
"You're very smart, Yuri. I want you to be on the lookout for this demon."
Yuri nodded in understanding.
The next day
Yuri watched from one of the windows as the crowd outside grew. Her tail twitched with anxiety. She had been told from Genkai that she could let her glamor fall and stay in her true form as long as the tournament went on; she had chosen to wear a deep red shirt that wrapped around her body and black leggings. Reaching up she slipped a black mask over her nose so half of her face was covered and hopefully would keep her identity hidden.
"It's time Yuri."
Yuri nodded at Genkai as she followed her downstairs, as Genkai stood in front of the sliding door Yuri moved to open it as someone outside yelled.
"Silence! Master Genkai is appearing to greet everybody!"
That was Yuri's cue as she pulled on the door so it would reveal Genkai to the group. As she stepped out Yuri followed behind her, her eyes scanning the group until her eyes landed on Yusuke and Kuwabara. This is going to get complicated if they figure out who I am.
"Oh, boy! So many are gathered here? Then we'll begin our test immediately!"
Yuri moved to grab the vase with all of the envelopes in it, she had cast an incantation on the papers where anyone with a certain level of Rei would turn the paper from white to red, and moved the vase next to Genkai.
"For the first test, we'll draw lots!"
The group seemed dumbfounded for a moment before questioning it.
"Everyone, come up and draw a lot from this vase."
Genkai instructed as everyone formed a line and approached. Yuri kept her eyes down making sure no one grabbed two as Yusuke and Kuwabara approached.
"Everyone, open up your lots and see. If you've got a red piece of paper. It means you've been chosen and you've passed the first round."
At once everyone opened their envelopes and the shouts of the people that didn't get the red paper. Yuri smirked under her mask as Yusuke and Kuwabara both had the red paper.
"Those who have been chosen, follow me. And those who haven't can return home now."
Yuri growled as two of the larger men approached the stairs as Genkai turned.
"Wait just a damn minute!"
Genkai turned as Yuri squared her shoulders prepared to step in if given the signal.
"We're the Rei experts from the nine regions!"
The one with the scar on his face yelled.
"We came especially here and you let us draw lots!? What's the meaning of this!?"
The one wearing fur yelled.
"Give us a reason at least! If we're not satisfied with the reason, we won't spare you even if you're a Master!"
Yuri narrowed her eyes, looking to Genkai who discreetly moved her hand letting Yuri know she wasn't needed yet.
"You frustrating pieces of garbage! I let you go home in one piece and you want to go at it the hard way now? As Rei experts, you couldn't even pick the correct lots? Go home and sleep!"
That seemed to push the giant men over the edge as they growled.
"How dare you poke fun at us! Stupid old Hag! Unforgivable!"
Yuri smirked as Genkai held her ground and screamed at the men as they were raising their fists to punch, releasing some of her Rei sending them snickered.
"You're getting old Master."
Genkai smirked.
"I'm getting along in my years. If it had been before. I would have gotten rid of those guys by just staring at them. My Reikohadou has decreased too. But at least you understand that real strength doesn't come from body size. And at least I know that those who passed were better than the two of them. Don't stand there dumbfounded! Follow me."
Genkai walked into the shrine as Yuri stood next to the vase, having everyone put their red pieces of paper in the vase and write their name down in her notepad, also ensuring no one with a white paper was allowed into the shrine. After turning a few men away with white papers and everyone with a red paper had entered the shrine Yuri slid the door closed and walked to the game room.
Yuri entered the room as some guy punched the punching game to only get 18 points. Snickering, she pulled out her notepad and started writing the points down as the men tried their hands at the different games.
Kuwabara took his turn at the punching game and received 129 points.
He has potential. Yuri thought slightly impressed.
"Did you see my power, Urameshi?"
He taunted Yusuke.
"You only scrape past the passing point! Watch me!"
Yusuke hit the machine and received 155 points. Yuri smiled as she continued to watch where she could see all the machines at once. After everyone had played all three games Yuri handed Genkai her notepad with the lowest scoring 20 people circled who Genkai asked to leave explaining they didn't make it to the next round.
Yuri led the way out for the men that didn't pass before spinning on her heels and walking to the next phase, the Demonic Forest. With a smirk Yuri took off, easily passing the remaining men in a blur, never seeing Kuwabara or Yusuke before she met with Genkai on the other side of the forest.
"Impressive. If you were competing you'd be the top contender."
Yuri lowered her mask and laughed.
"I'd like to think I haven't gotten that slow."
Genkai smiled as they waited.
"How long did you give them?"
Yuri asked as her eyes scanned for the two humans.
"Two hours."
Yuri smirked.
"That should be enough time. Hopefully no one dies in there."
Genkai smirked up at the vixen.
"When the two hours are up, you'll have to retrieve those that don't make it."
Hearing a howl, Yuri glanced down at her.
"If there's anything left."
1 Hour Later
"Not a single person yet."
Yuri sighed as she was leaning on the tree.
"Let me determine the positions of the Reiki."
Genkai sighed as she looked.
"The closest one is 500 meters away. Other than that, there should be 5 to 6 people here within the next hour."
Yuri nodded in understanding. A few minutes later she spotted the orange hair of Kuwabara, quickly she pulled her mask up and stood up.
"I'm really the first one?"
Yuri closed her eyes and nodded. A few minutes later more of the men showed up and Yuri mentally prepared herself to go find Yusuke and the others that were going to be left behind. Her eyes scanned over each of the men and couldn't get a read on who the demon was. Everyone smelt human, and none of them had an overly powerful aura.
"Looks like we've got 7 left."
Yuri sighed as Kuwabara looked around.
"Wait a minute! Someone else should be coming!"
Genkai pulled out her watch.
"Only a minute left. He has to be punctual!"
A minute later she called time.
"Time's up."
"Wait! Someone is coming!"
Yuri smirked as Yusuke walked out looking a little roughed up.
"Damn! I thought I'd be the fastest going straight! Never thought I'd end up in this state! Oh man!"
Yuri blinked confused as Genkai voiced what she was thinking.
"You said you came straight? Then you should've met some really powerful bats in the event."
Yusuke held up a beat up bat demon.
"You mean this little idiot? He was pretty irritating flying all around, but he's like a snail compared to Hiei!"
Yuri sighed, happy her brother had made it, before running off to free those who were still alive.
That's it for this one!
I'm working on the next one!
