Disclaimer: I don't own Paw Patrol
How many times had Chase dreamed of this day as his worst nightmare? It used to happen a lot when he was younger but as he got older and focused more on his duties as a Police Pup they became less often. Meeting his friends and playing with them were like blaming his soul and even though it still hurt to think about his father's death, it only came every so often. Now, seeing his father right before his eyes on the very day he was going to die made every emotion Chase had buried deep inside of him ready to burst out.
Chase watched as his younger self happily chatted with his father about the fun they were going to have this day. Not knowing that today was going to end in a tragedy that would see them separated. The sight of his younger self all happy and excited for a fishing trip made his heart ache and already the tears were starting to cascade down his cheeks. How innocent had he been before this day? So carefree and thinking his father was invincible?
He knew this wasn't real. Some kind of illusion or spell the wolves had placed him in. He tried hitting himself to wake up like you would in a dream but that didn't do anything but make him feel painful smacks on his cheeks. He even hit his head on the wall only to go right through it as if he was a ghost. Cursing, Chase looked around and tried to find some means to get out of his current situation.
"Hello?! Anyone?! Let me out of here! Get me out!" Chase cried out as loud as he could but there was no response. His past self and his father didn't react at all to him meaning he couldn't interact or speak to them at all. "Please! You can't do this to me!"
It was like he was in hell. Trapped and forced to be punished with his worst fears and experiences. He then saw Ryder, also younger around this time, walk inside as Younger Chase started running around his owner while barking happily while talking about how much fun they were going to have.
"Woah there, Chase. Don't get too excited that you'll waste all that energy. Fishing is also supposed to teach you about patience. Which, from the looks of it, you sound like you need a lot of it," Younger Ryder said with a chuckle as Chase pouted.
"I'm patient! I waited six whole minutes yesterday for the microwave puppy dinner to get done in the microwave," Chase pointed out.
"And yet you couldn't wait two minutes for me to come out of the bathroom before rushing outside to relieve yourself," Chase's Dad pointed out which made the pup blush red.
"T-T-That's different! I had to go bad!"
This only made Younger Ryder and Chase's Dad laugh at the pup's embarrassment but normal Chase wasn't having any sort of mirth whatsoever. Any second now, his Dad's partner was going to come and Younger Chase would never see his father alive ever again. Sure enough, the doorbell rang and Chase couldn't help but get in front of his father who was making for the door. Despite knowing it was an illusion, he held his paws up to try and stop him. "Dad! No! Don't leave! You'll die if you go out there! Stay home! Just please stay home!"
It was all futile as Chase's father went right past him as if he was made out of thin air. Trigger opened the door and standing there was a female Golden Retriever dressed in a similar police dog outfit like Trigger. Chase's father's partner, Cera, who would also perish on this day with him during what seemed like a normal patrol.
"Hey, Tigger, are you ready to head out?" Cera asked with a smile.
"Hi, Cera!" Younger Chase said, rushing over and smiling at her. "Think you can help Dad finish morning patrol early today?! We got a big fishing trip afterwards planned out!"
"Well, I guess we'll just see how today goes. Of course, I might have a little extra speed in my walking if someone buys me coffee," Cera said to Trigger with a wiggle in her eyes that made the older German Shepard roll his eyes.
"Sure. I guess I can do that much. Now let's hurry up so we can do our round. I'll buy you a cup when we're at Mr. Porters," Trigger said before he turned to Chase while leaning down to his eye level. Smiling at his little pride and joy, he said the final words he would ever say to his son that Chase always echoed in his mind whenever he thought about his dad's final moments. "I'll be home soon. Be a good boy. I love you."
"I love you too, Dad," Chase wept as he lowered his head in sorrow.
"Love you too, Daddy!" Younger Chase shouted happily while wagging his tail, oblivious to his future self's despair.
Chase watched as his father and Cera walked out of the Lookout with the glass doors shutting behind them. Chase sighed and watched as his younger self and Ryder headed off elsewhere. He didn't want to stick around to see his younger self crying over his father's future death so he tried leaving the Lookout by going through the wall where he found himself not knowing what to do. "I guess I can't leave until it's over..."
Hopefully the others would come and get him out of this nightmare before it was over. And hopefully before he had to re-experience learning his dad's fate. He was about to turn around when he saw his father and Cera walking near the tree outside of the Lookout when Cera suddenly tackled her father right behind it. Confused, Chase walked towards it, surprised he could even do so considering he wasn't even near his past self, and when he was fully around the three he gasped and felt his jaw drop.
Lying on the ground, out of view of everyone in the Lookout, was Cera and his father making out with the former on top of him and pressing her lips against his.
"W-W-W-W-WHAT?!"
After witnessing the fight between her younger self and her parents, Skye found herself suddenly in the living room of her home. She didn't know what had just happened. One minute she was watching herself and the next she was right next to the big pink and white couch they had in the middle of the room right in front of the big screen TV. It was like she just blurred away and found herself moved in a different location without feeling a thing.
"Could this be a result of the spell?" Skye asked herself as she walked around. She already found out that she could phase through objects like a ghost by touching the coffee table and seeing her hand go right through it. She didn't know what else she needed to see since she already had seen the worst memory she had. But it looked like whatever was controlling this memory dream dive wanted her to see something else.
The sound of a door slamming against the wall hard made Skye jump and she turned around to see an angry female cockapoo similar to her but older and thinner in her waist and neck with a pointer nose and narrow eyes storm into the living room. Behind her was a slightly smaller female cockapoo with darker fur, short ears, and curly tail while having slightly bigger paws. The one thing both of them also shared was their stunning good looks which were perfected upon years of being models in the fashion industry for dogs.
"Cera? Linda?" Skye asked in surprise upon seeing her older sisters. Cera, the angry one, looked ready to flip the table over while Linda was doing her best to calm her down. She almost didn't recognize them because they weren't wearing a fancy dress or wearing their make up even if they weren't doing a show. Her sisters were always trying to be fabulous all the time and seeing them naked without their usual appearance was a bit of a shock.
It was also because, much as she hated to admit it, she hadn't seen them in a long time and almost forgot what they look like.
"I can't believe her!" Cera shouted as she turned to Linda who looked saddened. "After everything we've done for her, all the help we've given, and tried our best to help her fit in, she just blows us all to run away to some backwater town to be a helicopter pilot for a bunch of kids!"
"She's going to be a rescue pup, Cera," Linda corrected her with a sigh. "There isn't anything wrong with her wanting to achieve her dream to help people. It's actually admirable."
"But to just leave us like this? And the thing she said to Mom and Dad? I get she hated being in the modeling industry but she could have been a lot less vicious about it," Cera pointed out as she turned around and shook her head. "Mom and Dad are heartbroken that she's gone and she doesn't care at all."
"That's not true!" Skye shouted at Cera even though she couldn't hear her. "I do care! I was just angry and...and..."
"Cera," Linda walked over and put a paw on her shoulder. "Skye does care about us, but try to see it from her perspective? She's always said she hated being in the fashion industry and wanted out of it. You know how stubborn Mom and Dad can be. We even told them she was better off doing something else, but they didn't listen."
"I know...but..." Cera slowly began to calm down. "I tried to help her. I did. But she just couldn't listen and kept complaining. I don't think she even really tried at all. All that did was get her bullied..."
"Skye's a child. Children act like this. We did and you were quite a brat at times at her age," Linda pointed out which made Cera blush a bit while her other sister chuckled. "I'm not saying that what she is doing is mature, but at the same time we should be happy she's doing something she wants to do. Even if she's doing part of it out of spite."
Linda then nuzzled her sister and whispered, "But that's not the real reason you are angry, is it? You don't want her to go because you're worried."
Skye stared at Cera in surprise and wondered if that was true. While she didn't always get along with her big sisters, they were still siblings who cared for each other. Although, deep down, Skye knew she had a problem being the little sister of two older and more beautiful dogs who everyone loved. Skye wouldn't deny she was jealous sometimes and a part of her wondered if her early attraction to Chase was because of how much attention he gave her.
"Can you blame me for being worried? Being a rescue pup means having to risk your life to save others and there is a chance that she could be hurt or worse doing so," Cera explained as she began to pace around. "I already looked into what this team is going to do. Police service. Fire and Rescue. Ocean rescue. Construction. And more. All of these things are dangerous, especially the first two. What if she has to fly over a burning building or deal with armed bank robbers?"
"Well, she wasn't wrong," Skye whispered as she recalled all the dangerous missions she had done in the past that featured things like that. Skye wouldn't deny that they were scary and some of them had close calls, but thanks to Ryder's training and leadership she was able to make it out okay.
"And the one leading them is a child? I don't care if this kid is a genius or whatever, how can I trust my little sister's life to a kid who's going to lead her into dangerous situations when he isn't even in puberty?" Cera pondered which made her just roll her eyes. "This is just all sounding stupid and I...I don't want something to happen to her! That's why I am so frustrated! She thinks that none of us care about her but here I am worrying my fur off with our parents looking so guilty and upset that they barely are even functioning!"
"Well, they haven't exactly made things better by still pressuring her to come home even after she managed to officially join," Linda said with a shake of her head.
"So why aren't you doing anything about this? Why aren't you trying to help us get her to come home?" Cera demanded.
"Because Skye is happy."
This made Cera blink as both she and a surprised Skye started over at Linda. "Listen, Skye was not happy. She was taking part in something that she didn't love and was embarrassed for being bad at it. She lived in our shadows and our parents, even though they loved her, didn't help making her feel better. She's cried in her bed after really horrible days of being embarrassed and bullied. She felt like nobody understood her and we tried, but it just wasn't enough. She's finally happy and better mentally. We need to accept that this is what she wants to do and hopefully one day she'll come home."
"How do we do that?" Cera asked, looking serious.
"We try to get Mom and Dad to be gentler around her," Linda explained with a smile as she put her paw on shoulder. "She'll come home, Cera. I promise."
With tears in her eyes, Cera wrapped her arms around her fellow sister and hugged her tight. Skye wished more than anything she could touch them. She wanted to hug her sisters right and tell them that, as soon as she got back to Adventure Bay, she would come home.
And she would fix their family.
Terra could tell that they were getting closer to the wolves from the smell of their scents. There was also a mix of blood and urine from markings made for their territory. They hadn't run into any patrols or scouts so that was a good thing, but it was also worrisome since that meant they had to deal with the entire group on their own if they ran into them. Luckily, Rocky managed to contact them not long ago to let them know that their new flame weapons were ready and Ryder told them to lock onto his signal and drive over as fast as possible.
"So are we going to wait or are we going to find where the group is first?" Marshall asked as Ryder finished his call with the others.
"We should be going," Ryder answered. "The closer we are to Chase and Skye, the closer the others can follow us. How close would you say we are, Terra?"
"If I had to guess," Terra sniffed the air to be sure. "About thirty minutes."
"Alright, let's take a ten minute break since we've been walking non-stop," Ryder said as he took a moment to sit down next to a tree. "It won't do us any good if we get tired while trying to rescue Chase and Skye. We also may need to flee as fast as possible once we save them so we'll need as much energy as possible."
Nodding, Marshall and Terra walked over to another tree and began to lay down. Marshall yawned, looking tired from all the running around and fighting he had been doing. It didn't help that he hadn't been able to sleep well ever since they entered Nighteyes territory. The very strange and dark forest, combined with all the horrors they had been seeing, had put a damper on his sleeping habits.
"Can you explain something to me?" Terra asked which made Marshall turn to her. "Are you really all doing this because of the half-breed that is leading Icebane?"
"Um, we're doing this to save Chase and Skye," Marshall pointed out in confusion.
"I mean being here in Wintergreen," Terra said with an amused smirk before frowning. "I mean, going all this for one pup? I understand she is important to you all, but surely you have to have wondered if it was all worth it? Ever since you got here you've had to deal with wolves trying to kill you in multiple ways."
"I suppose we do look kinda silly for constantly trying to find one pup out of an entire forest of hostile creatures," Marshall admitted as he rubbed the back of his neck. He then smiled warmly upon thinking about Everest's warm smile and shook his head. "However, I have never had doubts or regrets or even one moment of hesitation in trying to find Everest. The others are the same as well. Even if they wanted to all turn back now, I would never go with them. I would go find Everest until I died trying."
"But why? I mean...what is she to you besides a friend?" Terra asked. Marshall blushed as he looked down at his paws. Terra saw this and it clicked inside her head. "Wait, you're in love with her?"
"Maybe? I don't know. I know she's important to me and I feel something whenever I think about her," Marshall answered with a heavy sigh. "Love or not. I want to bring her home or at least make sure she is safe at least. And I would do the same with everyone in Paw Patrol."
Standing up, Marshall looked at Terra and said, "There is something that Everest told me before she left that I've never really understood until this adventure. She told me that a pack means family. She told me it means that everyone in the pack from Alpha to Omega is important. You treasure them more than food, water, shelter, or even your own life. You fight with them. Die for them. Protect them. There is no greater trust or love than that of a pack. Some would even rather die than be alone. I have never forgotten those words. And I realize that this is the same for Paw Patrol. All of us have been together and risked life and limb for each other. Everest is part of that group. Part of that family. I would do anything for her because she would do the same for me. That goes for all of us."
Terra stared at Marshall in awe and slowly got up with respect in her eyes. "Whatever wolves had said about dogs not knowing honor and nobility is false. You understand what it means to be in a pack better than some of our own kind. I always didn't believe that dogs and wolves were related to each other but now I see that there is truth in these words."
She lowered her head. "I am...moved by your determination and will do what I can to help you in your quest."
"Thanks! Hey, maybe you can live with us back in Adventure Bay! I know Rocky would be excited to hear that," Marshall suggested with a wag of his tail.
"You mean become a member of Paw Patrol?" Terra asked in confusion.
"Yeah, we can train you to be something really cool! You got a lot of skills and talent. I'm sure we can find something," Marshall said with a grin. "We can even think of some catchphrases!"
"Catchphrases?"
"Yeah, like I have I'm ready for a ruff ruff rescue! And I'm fired up!" Marshall claimed with his familiar vigor.
"Oh, so it's like a battle cry? How about this?" Terra cleared her throat before proudly claiming. "My teeth shall taste enemy blood!"
"...We'll work on that."
