It was in the centre of the Safe Haven metropolitan city. It was a Sunday afternoon as only a few cars could be seen despite it being lunch hour. That's because most people are on their weekend holiday, resting up and enjoying the little bit of peace and quiet before starting back work on Monday.
However, it hadn't been a peaceful or even a quite day for our jackal, Jack. How many disasters could he list that happened during the past 3 hours of his life, well, firstly, missed the bus even though he woke up early, tripped and fell into a manhole, accidentally trampled on by a huge elephant dude (he did say sorry), second manhole, third, lost count... and finally, stepped onto a pool wet cement.
Jack was outside an ice cream store with a small piece of pebble he found on the sidewalk. He was wearing a black hoodie with jeans while wearing a pair of red sneakers which is heavily smothered in dried cement, almost like a second pair of shoes covering his original one. He was furiously banging the pebble onto his cement covered shoe, trying to chip off some of the dry edges.
"Fuck this!!" He cursed his luck, again, each time he pummels onto his feet. As he chipped some of the cement off, he breathes a gasp as he slumps his back towards the wall. He sighs in defeat, thinking it would take him forever to break it.
"Wow, I thought 'rock' fashion was so last season!!" A girl's voice suddenly comments as Jack instantly looks up.
He immediately recognised the owner of the voice. It was Baltimore, wearing her usual black and white dress but now she has a brown fur coat and a pair of orange coloured evening gloves. She also had a clear orange scarf wrapped around her neck as it flutters in the wind.
"Haha, I'm glad you're finding this funny!!" Jack says sarcastically before hacking onto his feet again.
"Need some help there?" She teases him as he looks at her.
"Actually yeah! Could you like, umm, lift my foot up?" He asks her suddenly which wasn't her intention but she decided to help anyways as she puts her hands under his cement boots as she lifts them up.
"Like this?" She asks him as he nods.
"Exactly, now smash them to the ground, like really hard!" Jack orders as Baltimore was shocked.
"What?! Are you insane?!" She asks him back in shock.
"I'll heal, it's fine!!" He tries to convince her as she contemplated on it for a while. She then realised she didn't have a choice as she used her arms to slam his foot onto the ground.
His cement boot crashes onto the hard pavement as it breaks into a million pieces. Bits of cement and dust flew through the air as Baltimore waves her hands to blow the dust away.
Meanwhile, Jack was desperately clutching onto his bottom leg as he winces and scrunched his face in pain.
"Owowow..." Jack hisses as he held his leg.
"I just think you're a masochist..." She comments at him.
"I think, I definitely broke an ankle..." He croaks trying to stifle his grunts of pain as Baltimore started putting on a worried look.
"Is it that bad?" She asks him in concern.
"It'll *huff* heal, in a bit... Just hah, give me a breather..." Jack says they waited for a while. After a few more seconds, he suddenly springs back up looking energetic, which spooked Baltimore a bit.
"I don't know if I should be amazed... or terrified..." Baltimore comments as Jack chuckles.
"I'll take that as a compliment!" Jack replies as he was feeling refreshed. He then looks in front and he could finally gaze at her outfit. He was amazed to see her high level of fashion sense. He got to admit that she looked beautiful.
"Y-you look nice..." Jack comments as Baltimore looks at him with surprise.
"So you're taking this whole 'date' thing seriously huh? Complimenting your 'girlfriend' after seeing her..." Baltimore teases as Jack grumbles but he was glad she wasn't worried like before.
"You know you're not my girlfriend right?" Jack lashes back.
"I know! But I know you'd love for me to be your girlfriend!" She continues on as Jack couldn't believe the girl in front of her. Is tormenting guys like her calling in life or something?
"Just shut up Baltimore!" He says flustered as she couldn't help laugh.
"I'm just messing with ya!" She says as she laughs at his flustered reaction. She then looks at his outfit and...
"Well, you look... average, I guess?" She didn't know how to compliment him and it did tickle him a bit.
"I'll also take that as a compliment!" He jokes as she smiles at him. He scrambled earlier this morning trying to find something that's at least fashionable and this was all he could find.
"Hey, coming from the all beautiful me, not a lot of guys gets called average, so feel honoured!" She speaks with pride as Jack facepalms himself.
"Wow, yeay, what an honour it is..." He spoke dryly with a sprinkle of sarcasm as she just giggles at him.
"Anyways, so, you wanna head inside?" Jack invites as she nods at him. As both of them went inside, they were surprised to find that it was fairly empty. Even on a heat wave stricken day like this.
"I guess we're lucky!" Jack comments seeing how there were a lot of empty seats available.
Both of them sat down opposite of each other and getting themselves comfortable. Jack could pick up the slight elegance Baltimore has in her actions. Pulling her gloves back to straighten them, wiping of dust from her seat.
"Don't stare so much and, I thought drooling was more of a dog's thing!" Baltimore suddenly spoke up as Jack was caught off guard.
"Wh-wha? I wasn't staring!" Jack was stumped at her noticing as he checks his lips for any accidental drool but luckily she was just messing with him.
"Would it kill you to be a little nice?" Jack asks her.
"I'l think about it!" She says back.
As they were bantering, the waitress suddenly came to take their order.
"Hello, I'll be taking your order, so is there anything that interests you?" The waitress asks as Jack hurriedly order.
"Um, yeah, can I have the Birthday Gift sundae... that's all I think?" Jack says as the waiter jots it down.
"Just the sundae? Anything to drink?" She asks Jack. He looks at Baltimore who was looking at him dead in the eye.
"Umm... m-milk?" He answers unsurely and he could hear Baltimore snickering at his order.
"Okay, a birthday sundae and a glass of warm milk, good choice... And you, ms?" She turns to Baltimore as she started scouring the menu. Suddenly, she neatly puts it down and looks at the waitress.
"Can I have the toasted maple butter waffles, and the French Vanilla milkshake... oh, could you please add a scoop of mandarin cheesecake ice-cream?" She lays out her order.
"Go figure..." Jack chuckled inside at her choice of ice-cream which didn't go unnoticed by her.
"Sure thing sweetie!!" The waiter smiles at her.
"So, that'll be a birthday sundae, a glass of milk, maple waffle and a vanilla milkshake with mandarin cheesecake ice cream on the top! I'll get them in a jiffy!" The waiter then walks away, leaving the two of them alone.
She suddenly looks at Jack seriously as she puts her two hands together in a serious fashion.
"Birthday sundae and milk? What are you, six?" Baltimore rudely remarks as Jack just chuckles.
"Says the girl who orders an orange ice-cream and wears that all over her!!' Jack points out at her taste and design choice.
"You're saying I'm basic?" She asks him.
"You're saying I'm a kid?" Jack retaliates.
"Alright, I'll tell you my reason if you tell me yours!!" Baltimore crosses her hands and looks at him, waiting for his response.
He then sits up straight and smiles at her before telling.
"Don't be disappointed though!" He says as she smiles at him.
"Try me!" Her voice of challenge reaches his ears.
"It's nothing big, my mom and I always came here every time it's my birthday and that's what I usually get... I don't particularly like the other flavours..." Jack says to her awaiting her response.
"Oh... that's all?" Baltimore asked him back.
"I told you're gonna be disappointed!!"
"Still, it must be nice having your mom celebrating your birthday..." Baltimore suddenly trails off as she looks down at her hands. He noticed the hint of sadness so he decided to change the conversation.
"Well, I told mine! So what about yours?" Jack asks her as she suddenly sighs.
"Well, cause orange is my favourite colour... and I like oranges" Baltimore says as Jack was surprised.
"What? Really?!" He asks wondering if that's all.
"Well, yeah!! I love them cause they're quite sour but sometimes there's a little sweetness to it!" Baltimore says.
"Wow, you can be normal!!" Jack exclaims as Baltimore frowns.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asks him flabbergasted.
"You're always saying mean things so what you said earlier proves that you could at least be nice!" Jack smiles mischievously.
"And all this time I thought you might be like those zodiac girls who eats or wears based on their horoscopes!!" Jack says as she scoffs.
"Zodiac's are a bunch of bullshit! Rather than believing on the random position of stars, I believe people can be judged just by how lower they are compared to me! Especially you!!" Baltimore says filled with arrogance as Jack couldn't help but feel disappointed.
"Yeah... go figure..." He says with disappointment but he suddenly picks up Baltimore's sad expression.
"You know I was only joking... right?" She asks him as a sad expression filled her tone.
Jack immediately realised his mistake as he apologizes to her.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realise..." Jack mutters but she just shakes her head with a dry smile.
"Look Jack, like I said before, I don't really care about what people say about me, it's all the same anyway..." She looks outside the window, staring off onto the streets.
Jack immediately slumps his back as he furiously covered his face.
"Why am I so fucking dumb?!!!" Jack cursed himself inwardly as Baltimore sees his gloomy expression.
"H-hey, you don't have to be so serious about it... Like I said it's fine..." Baltimore says to him as Jack peeks through his fingers.
"I'm sorry, I'm so stupid with girls sometimes... I didn't realize you were making a joke..." Jack admits as he grunts in embarrassment.
"Well, make that all the time!!" She giggles at him as Jack gathered enough courage to sit straight up again. She then clears her throat as she looks at him interested.
"So... I noticed that you really love to apologize..." Baltimore points out as Jack chuckles dryly.
"I'm messed up a lot especially with girls, you don't like it?" Jack asks her wondering if she's tired with him apologizing.
"I never said that! No, I... actually kinda like it... at least, you're brave enough to say you're sorry, even to people like me..." Baltimore reveals as she smiles warmly at Jack.
"Look Baltimore, I don't think you're that bad of a person like people think you are!" Jack says to her.
"Gee, thanks..." She rolls her eyes.
"Seriously..., people make mistakes and it takes a while for them to realise... You came to me to apologize so... I don't think that makes you a bad person!!" Jack says as she looks at his face with a surprised look.
"R-really?" She asks him as he nods.
"Yeah... Like I said, I don't think you're a bad person, not at all, perhaps, you just needed someone to help you..." Jack says as he could see Baltimore looking at him. She was just staring at him for a while which did make him uncomfortable.
Suddenly, she bursts out laughing which confused him. She laughs for a while before wiping her tears and looking at him.
"Thanks Jack... I really appreciate it..." She beams at him as his shyness crept up as he rubs the back of his head.
"Y-you're welcome, I guess..." Jack stutters in his words.
"You know, you're the only person that ever talked to me like that..." Baltimore says as he looks at her.
"Well, it's cause I'm your friend!" Jack says as Baltimore's eyes went wide. Jack was shocked at her expression and panics, thinking he might've push the boundaries too far.
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to step over-
"N-no it's just... Really? You want to be my friend?" She asks him as Jack stares at her.
"W-well yeah! I mean we are going for ice-cream together so... I thought we were over our problems so..." Jack reveals as she still looks shock.
"Oh..., I don't mind... I just... never really had someone who wanted to be my friend before..." Baltimore says as Jack was surprised at her statement.
"Really? You never had friends, not even one?" He asks her.
Suddenly the waitress arrives with their orders as she places them down.
"Thanks!!" Both of them said in unison before shooting towards each other. They then looked away as the waitress just giggles at the two of them.
"Young love!!" She happily thought as she walks away, trying to get another person's order.
Baltimore then clears her throat as she turns her face towards Jack.
"No, that's not it! I have friends... well I don't think I can even call them that... more like, family acquaintances, we don't really hang out much unless it's like a formal event... Plus, I think they're kind of annoying..." Baltimore explains.
"Well, you do at least have some 'friends-friends' at least right? Like from school maybe?" Jack asks her.
"Well, my butler, Gerard always look after me, but... I consider him more of an uncle than a friend... And, girls at my school just wants to be friends cause I'm the popular girl but I realised that maybe they're not that keen on being my friend..." Baltimore explains as she twirls her straw inside her glass of milkshake.
"Well... what about guy friends?" Jack asks as she suddenly grumbles.
"Urghh, don't even talk about them... they're just interested in me cause they think I'm some easy, rich girl flaunting daddy's money... living the E District life I guess!!" Baltimore grumbles as she takes a sip from her milkshake.
"Mmmm, so good..." She cooes at the taste of the milkshake.
"Well, no surprise in that, you're beautiful and talented... I'll be surprised if you said guys weren't into you!!" Jack spoke as he scoops up a little bit of ice-cream before munching on it.
"Did you just say I'm... beautiful and talented?" She asks as Jack nods.
"Is this some sort of secret confession, Mr. Wells?" She asks him with a mischievous smile as he chokes on his ice-cream.
He then proceeded to frantically reach for his glass of milk, as he downs it hard. After he was relieved, he slams the glass down before wiping off his lips from the leftover milk as he stares at her with disbelief.
"You really like torturing me, do you?" He asks her as she peeks her tongue mischievously.
"What? I thought friends are supposed to joke around with each other, unless...
"P-please stop! I'm begging you!" He tries to stop her other attempt in teasing him.
"You're no fun!" She jokes before both of them suddenly burst into laughter.
"But really... I'm talented?" She asks him as she scoops up a bit of the mandarin ice-cream.
"Ummm, yeah! Every time we had a competition and you're there, I'll always feel like you have a great voice!!" Jack admits as he notices Baltimore beaming.
"So, I'm not some skank with a half assed talent and a pretty face?" She asks as he becomes flustered.
"I thought we're over it!!" Jack shouts back as she giggles.
"Well, hearing you say I'm talented and beautiful, I forgive you!!" Baltimore says as she takes another sip from her glass.
"But thanks, that means a lot..." She spoke warmly at him.
As the day passes, both of them enjoys their talk as they went into a bunch of different topics. Surprisingly, Jack enjoys it a lot. Despite his first impression of her, she turns out to be quite the girl. She wasn't just interested in just singing but fashion and science as well. He likes it when he had someone to talk about astronomy. Their interests in music were quite similar as well as she was surprised to learn about his drumming skills.
"You know you didn't have to walk with me right?" Jack says as they were strolling down his neighbourhood walk.
"I don't mind, plus... I enjoy taking slow walks like this sometimes..." She comments as she stares at the trees around them.
"You know, you're the first guy or person really, that ever wanted to be my friend... like friends for real-real... I'm glad for that!!" Baltimore says as Jack smiles back.
"Well, I'm also glad that you wanted to be my friend... despite my, shenanigans and... situations..." He points on his curse but she shook her head.
"I don't mind, plus, I had fun talking with you!! Most guys I talk to just wants to shag me!!" She points out as Jack exclaims in surprise.
"Glad I'm not that kind of guy!" He chuckles.
"But you're missing out actually!" She suddenly strikes a pose but after all the teasing he had today, he might've just become immune to it.
As they walked further, they then reach his house as he turns back to her.
"Well, guess we're here! I'm really glad for our time earlier!" Jack says as he holds out his hand for a shake.
Baltimore stares at his hand before slowly grabbing onto it. She feels the rough texture of his paw since he was a drummer. Jack was mesmerized at the same time by how soft and smooth her hand was. Suddenly, Jack was surprised to feel her pulling him, as he stumbled and was forced into a hug. However, he felt warm and he sort of enjoyed her hug. A sense of bravery arrives in him as he puts his arms around her. It was a surprise for sure... but a welcomed one.
"Thanks Jack!" She says besides his ears as Jack replies.
"Well, thank you as well Baltimore..." He says.
"Elena..." She suddenly spoke which made him confused.
"What?" He asks in confusion as they separated. She suddenly looks shy as she rubs her hand and looks down.
"People close to me, they call me Elena..." She says as Jack's lips curved upwards.
"Um, okay, Elena... that's actually easier to say... thanks Elena!!" Jack says as she smiles back.
"Well, it gets kinda annoying hearing your tongue twist every time you say 'Baltimore' !" She jokes harshly as Jack rubs his head in embarrassment.
Suddenly, he could see her undoing her clear orange scarf that was wrapped around her neck. She suddenly goes close towards him before speaking.
"Hold out your hand..." She says as Jack lends his right hand out.
Suddenly, she took the scarf as she wraps it around his hand. After she was done, she took a step back as Jack looks at the scarf wrapped around his hand.
"W-what's this?" He asks her.
"Well, consider it a good luck charm since you're into the whole superstitious luck shit, and, it's also a gift for our friendship!!" She beams as Jack was surprised at her intent. He lightly touches the scarf as he gazed at it a bit more.
"What are you, twelve?" He asks her as she pouts and crosses her hands.
"If you don't want it, then give it back!!" Baltimore says annoyed. Jack immediately retracts his hand and tries to calm her down.
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding,... it's actually quite nice..." Jack says as he looks at his hand.
"Well, thanks, though... I don't have anything to give you..." Jack says as she winks at him.
"Don't worry, I'll put in on tab!! I expect nothing less than a handbag or a smartphone!! I heard a new Supreme sweater just dropped!!" She says with a teasing wink as she walks away, waving at him.
"Bye Jack!! I'll text you tonight!!" Baltimore says.
He waves back, staring and smiling at her until she disappears from sight.
He walks inside, his eyes glued to the piece of fabric tied around his hand.
"Hey, Jack! Did you have fun?" His mom asks from the kitchen as she was busy stirring a pot of soup.
"Yeah, a lot of fun!!" Jack says smiling as he sat on the dining table chair.
"Glad you enjoyed it... I remember I was 14 when your dad brought me out on our first date!! We watched a movie and hung out near downtown... those were some good times!!" His mom says as she stares at the pot, remembering the good times she had with her husband.
Meanwhile, Jack was still clueless on whether or not to tell his mom that they're not actually dating.
"Well, we just had ice-cream and talked... like a lot..." Jack says to his mom when she suddenly joins him on the dining table.
"Really... what did you talk about?" She asks him, very interested in her son's girlfriend.
"Well, nothing important, just our interests and stuff..." Jack says as he stretches his hand out, trying to loosen his posture.
However, his mom noticed the orange scarf wrapped around his hand.
"What's that thing on your hand?" His mom asks as Jack realised his mom saw his gift.
"It's nothing... just a good luck charm..." He says as he looks at it once more.
Now, it was already midnight as Jack just stares at the thin scarf he held in his hand. He did take it off to eat and stuff but his eye never left the piece of clothing.
Something about it just oozes with warmth and comfort. He held it close to his chest as he breathes slowly. He could feel his heart pumping loudly every time he gazed onto the clothing.
"Fuck... I'm crushing for her..." Jack slowly mutters as the truth slowly crept to him. He once said that he easily crushes but... he wasn't hopeful those times. But now, he just keeps holding onto the sentimental aspect of the scarf.
His ears then picked up a vibrating noise from besides him. He looks to the side to see his phone's screen lighting up. He brought it to his face and was surprised to see a name pop up. His fingers then furiously types on his phone to reply at the message.
Elena: You're up?
You: Yeah... you?
Elena: Obviously dummy!!
Jack chuckles at his slight mistake but he keeps typing.
You: So... what's keeping you up?
Elena: Nothing much, can't sleep!! You?
She asks him as Jack also couldn't put a finger on why.
You: I dunno, I feel weird...
Elena: Lol, you must be horny!!
Jack's eyes went wide at her message as he immediately types back.
You: No, I'm not!
Elena: No shame in admitting it Jack! Don't worry, I've a lot of pics for you to enjoy!!
She even puts in a teasing emoji at the end.
You: Fuck you!!
Elena: Gladly!! Come over babe!!
Jack couldn't believe his eyes at this girl in front of him. He could feel his cheeks heating up like a volcano as he slams his phone on his bed. He then covers his face with his pillow trying to suppress his scream of shyness.
Suddenly, he hears his phone ringing as he looks to the side. Her name flash on it as he sighs. He answers as her image popped up for the video call.
"Did I get you good?" She asks him with an amused tone as he grunts.
"Yeah, yeah, just bully the weak dude!!" Jack says as he lays on his pillow laying his phone sideways.
"What... Never hear of sexting?" She says as Jack sighs.
"Sexting's for couples... we aren't actually one!!" Jack says as she shrugs it off.
"Well, you could at least act like we are!" She exclaims as Jack chuckles.
"Yeah, sure!" He jokes as he stares at her through the screen.
"Your bedroom seems big!!" Jack comments as he could see her room through the camera.
"Well, thanks, it's kinda lonely though!" She explains as she stares at his room.
"Yours look... decent... I guess?" She says as Jack couldn't help chuckle.
"Well, this is what you call a guy's room!!" Jack says pointing on the small space of his room when compared to hers.
"It's adequate I guess... But, I don't think your bed's big enough to bang!!" She says as Jack's eyes widen.
"B-bang?" He asks wondering if she meant what he thinks she meant.
"You know, fucking!!" She says as Jack couldn't help it.
"You really don't care about what's coming out of your mouth do you!!" He says as she chuckles.
"Well, this mouth can do a lot more!!" She says as Jack lashes.
"Alright, I'm ending the call, goodbye!" He says as he couldn't handle anymore of her teasing. His cheeks was aching to much from it.
"Hey, hey, I'm kidding, I'll stop! Please don't leave!!" She suddenly pouts as he sighs.
"Fine..." He gives up.
"I'm sorry, I thought you'd enjoy that side of me..." She says as Jack shakes his head.
"Well, it's not like I hate it but... it just, I'm shy alright!" He reveals as she smiles.
"Not a surprise!!" She exclaims already knowing about how he is.
"Alright! Don't get your knot in a twist, I won't tease you anymore! Can't promise though!!" She says but Jack felt that it was better than nothing.
"Jack... I really had fun today, thanks for being my friend..." She suddenly sounds out as Jack smiles.
"Anytime! And, thanks for the gift!!" He says as he points out at the scarf he was holding.
"No probs..." She says as she trails off.
"Hey... umm, I was wondering if we could hang out some other time..." Jack asks her as he rubs his head.
"Well... sure!! Yeah! I'd love too!!" Baltimore says as Jack couldn't help but throw his fists up in joy.
A month has passed since the two started their friendship. They always hung out and those times were something that he cherished. Movies, ice-cream, carnivals, ice-cream again. At first, he felt it was a wonderful thing to have a new friend but after all the times they hung out and getting to know her better, that feeling turned into something bigger. Jack truly felt something special with her, a deep ember lighting up inside him. Alas, it's only something that he kept inside.
Inside the Zoophoenix Academy showers, Jack was seen sitting on a bench as he had a towel wrapped around his otherwise bare body. His eyes just stares at the piece of cloth, the scarf she gifted, wrapped around his wrists, with a serious look. He then imagines looking at her, face to face.
"I... love- dang it... I always like- n-no, I am in- shit!!" Jack curses as he stumbles in his words.
"Yo, what's up!!" Zill shows up besides him, wrapped in towel as well.
"Hey, Zill!" Jack greets in a defeated tone but he goes back to staring at the scarf. Zill then sat besides him as he noticed Jack staring at a mundane scarf.
"You've been staring into space a lot!!" Zill commented as Jack realised what he was doing.
"Oh... um... I..." Jack trails off but Zill places his hands on Jack's shoulder.
"By the way, what's that on your hand?" Zill asks as Jack hesitates.
"Umm... I...
"Don't sweat it dude! You can tell me if there's any problems!!" Zill encourages him as Jack sighs.
"Well, it's a gift I got from someone..." Jack mutters as he looks at the scarf lovingly.
"A gift... NO WAY!! IS IT A GIRL? YOU GOT A GIRLFRIEND?!!!" Zill theorize with an excited tone as Jack panics.
"Dude! Keep it down!" Jack tells him as Zill apologize.
"Oh sorry... but it's true then!!" Zill states with a proud look but Jack shakes his head.
"N-no! Look, it is a girl alright! But she's not my girlfriend! It's nothing special!!" Jack says as Zill was interested.
"Hehe, you're not gonna admit it... but i know you crushing on her. I recognise that look anywhere!!" Zill says as Jack goes silence and Zill knew it only gave him away.
"Well, gotta start somewhere! So... who is she?" He asks as Jack froze.
He didn't know what to do. Baltimore was a sworn enemy for their group, and Zill especially since she always harasses Kayla but not anymore since the day she apologized. Still, he was afraid that Zill would still be pissed. He was afraid how his best friend would react knowing the girl he has a crush with is Zill's girlfriend's bully.
"Come on, tell me! I'm your best friend right?" Zill tries to convince him as Jack looks at Zill with hesitation. He didn't know what to do but he knew to trust his friend. After a few seconds of hesitation, Jack stares at his best friend before a sigh escapes his lips.
"Ok, I'll tell! But promise with you won't be mad!!" Jack suddenly says which confused Zill.
"O-okay?" He agrees brimming with confusion.
"It's... Baltimore..." Jack mutters slowly.
"Huh... Baltimore? Which Baltimore again?" Zill asks.
"Starlena... It's Starlena..." Jack says as Zill froze for a bit.
"Huh, another girl called Baltimore Starlena huh? Well! As long as it's not the original!!" Zill beams but he then noticed Jack's fearful look.
