Chapter 3: Coal Gym Battle!
Ok so after my shower and getting ready I opened the door to the bedroom. Then Ashley sprinted by me and slammed the door so fast I felt my hair move from the wind.
Deciding to not tease her after she just thought she had a wet dream about me instead of what actually happened. Pikachu was still in dreamland sleeping on his back with an air bubble coming out of his nose. Well good to know he wont rat out to Ashley about what happened.
Whenever I attempt to date Ashley we're going to have to figure out where to put Pikachu when we want to get intimate. Maybe a good first step is to get him used to his pokeball instead of staying out all the time. From what I can tell most Pokemon don't mind it.
Rose seems to be more refreshed sleeping in her ball then when she sleeps out of it. Then there's Trident who is definitely not Dawn's Piplup from the anime. He seems more battle focused which is fine. He only wants to be out to train, eat and fight.
Speaking of training we are using today to get our teams ready for the gym. Since Rose got a double kick down in the cave we are just gonna practice her running around in quick attack then transitioning into double kick smoothly.
Hopefully Trident can get bubblebeam down if not Water Gun should still do well. Bubblebeam is just more widespread and can slow down your opponents easier.
Once Ashley came out of the shower I wished her a good morning and she blushed and said it back quietly as she got her trainer stuff and woke Pikachu. Deciding to give her some time to relax I didn't say much but asking what she planned for training to get her mind off of it.
She hoped to have Pikachu train Starly into using steel wings and then finish aerial ace. Pikachu can do his own training at this point since he knows most of the moves he can learn. Turtwig will be basic move training and accuracy with razor leaf.
Seemed like a good plan. I also found out Ashley can't use Pikachu in battles till the 6th gym. Something about making it harder for more experienced trainers. Honestly it made more sense than somehow making pikachu weaker every season and then getting back up to level.
Yes, I'm calling out Unova as the worst season of pokemon ever. Pikachu is easily top tier and towards max level and I can't see how it was okay for Ash to use him for every gym after a while. Or people could easily coast gyms forever.
After a quick breakfast we found a nice field to do some training a short walk away from the poke center. I got Rose on an obstacle course with some low hanging targets. I showed her how to set up and told her I would focus mainly on Trident today.
She gave me a cute salute with her ear as I went and helped Trident. Trident was close to getting the move he shot out way more bubbles then the other day. He seems to be leaving his mouth out too wide to try to make bigger bubbles.
I told him to narrow his beak and make smaller but more bubbles and after a few tries you could see a major difference. Only a couple hours later and he finally got the move down.
Piplup has learned Bubble Beam.
After I got the ping I told him to practice using it for the rest of the day and take breaks if needed. I went and checked on Rose and got there in time to see her start the obstacle from scratch.
The first part is bouncing between some trees then kicking a target sitting near a bush with both legs. She seemed to have this part down flat as she even did some flips to add some force to when she kicked off the trees and then into the target.
After that she had to dash across some rocks on a small creek bed that was barely a couple inches deep. She did it pretty well besides one small slip on a wet rock but she recovered nicely and kicked the target of a big rock on the shore leaving a bigger dent then what she created so far.
For the last part she just had to sprint back to the beginning as fast as she could. She made it back quickly but seemed to stumble a bit at stopping but she did it really well and I could tell she was getting fatigued.
"That's enough Rose you look exhausted. I told you to take some breaks if you were tired." I chastised her a little bit knowing that recovery is more important than overworking yourself.
She quickly collapsed on her but as she gave me a sheepish look. I gave her a quick I told you so look. She was spared by my timer that went off calling quits to our training for today. I recalled her so she could get some rest and then went to collect Trident.
After getting my pokemon I saw Ashley sitting against a tree cheering on her pokemon to give it their all. I could see a ton of marks on trees and rocks from razor leaves. There was also some big gashes from the steel wing leaving some trees bark less.
Looked like she got her goals for training done today as well. I sat next to her while she let her team go once more. I could see the slight blush on her face appear as she noticed me and gave me a quick smile before calling out to her team to come back.
I leaned back into the tree and started to rub Ashley's back like she did for me last night. I noticed she was a bit tense and rubbed circles onto her back with a nice slow pressure. I felt her tense at my touch but then relaxed instantly at the feeling.
Once her team arrived she recalled them all but Pikachu and asked if I was ready to go. She quickly got up and let Pikachu run up to her shoulder. I was about to stand myself when Ashley held her hand out to me and helped me up herself.
I was about to tell her thanks before she entwined our fingers and we started walking out of the field. I had a slight blush and I smiled when I saw how happy she was as well. I do like a woman who takes charge so I'm okay waiting for Ashley to take the lead in making our relationship more.
We walked back in a nice silence still in hand as the sun was setting letting everyone know the day was over. She didn't let go of my hand till we got back to the poke center. She asked me to grab us some food while she used the restroom.
I agreed quickly and Pikachu went over to my shoulder deciding he would rather get food then go into the girls bathroom. I laughed at his action and he stuck his tongue out at me as I got our dinner for the pokemon setup at a table. Then I left him with Rose and Trident as I got me and Ashley some human food.
I was happy to find out they do still have cows and chickens as well as normal fish for food. Apparently they are more in captivity to protect them from wild pokemon killing them instantly. Weirdly enough we still drink Miltank milk though.
It was a nice quiet dinner once Ashley got back. We talked about our training and how it went. She also gave me some tips on what to do at a gym battle. There wasn't much difference from the anime or games but she didn't know I knew that.
"Just make sure not to set off the sprinklers in a gym. Apparently you get fined for that." Ashley told me the story about her first gym battle with Brock. It was always funny how she won her first gym in the anime. She seemed relaxed and carefree as she told her story.
I kind of lost track as I watched her bright red eyes staring back at me with joy. It was like I couldn't hear anything as I watched her laugh with a big smile on her face. Oh yeah I got it bad.
"Hello earth to Dawn." I broke out of my teen stupor to see Ashley waving her hand in front of my face. I noticed she cleaned up all the pokemon bowls and our trays.
"And Dawn is back to earth with us Pikachu. Come on, let's go to bed. I want to get some good sleep for our gym battle tomorrow ." I took her hand that she offered me again and saw her eyes light up again.
"As long as we get to sleep like last night again. I slept like a rock. You're really warm, you know. It's like a nice space heater." I told her as I swung our arms a little while walking to the elevator.
"Yeah, I've always been on the warmer side. My Mom said she was always worried about me sleeping in the nude growing up because I was too hot." I snorted at that.
"From your stories that seems like something your Mom would say. I can't wait to meet Delia when we go to pallet after the season." The smile on Ashley's face grew as I said that. Compared to what they show you in the anime. Ashley and her mom are really close. She emails her all the time on her pokedex while we're traveling.
"She really wants to meet you too. We should video call her after we win our gym badges so you two can meet." That was a pretty good idea.
"Oh then we can video call my mom and you two could meet as well." Ashley seemed frozen for a second at that statement. Then she quickly rebooted after a slap from Pikachu's tail to the head.
"Yeah that would be great. Your mom was a big contest trainer back in her day right?" What some people forget about Dawn's mom was. She was THE contest person back when they were first starting. Johanna was pretty revolutionary in the beginning of the contest circuit.
"She really was. Sadly I'm not too into it but she supports me in my battling dreams." I'm still really happy that Johanna wasn't mad about me being a battler. Thank you Dawn for procrastinating on what you wanted to do before your journey.
We made it back to the room while we talked and I changed last this time. Once I was in bed I felt a pair of strong arms pull me into a warm body. I sighed at the feeling and encased Ashley's arms with my own.
"Goodnight Dawn" She said quietly into my ear.
"Goodnight Ashley" I whispered as I fell asleep in her arms.
Next Day
We arrived at Roark's gym after a hearty breakfast and a quick pep talk to both of our teams. It looked like an old metal warehouse building but with the league symbol and gym badge on the front.
"Ready to kick some rock ass." I said to Ashley pumped to be able to do my first gym battle. This is where I can really test my metal and get started towards the sinnoh conference.
"You know it." Ashley smirked back to me as we high fived and walked into the gym. There was a semi small waiting room when we walked in and saw a receptionist typing away at her computer.
"Hello I'm Ashley Ketchum and this is Dawn Berlitz. We are here for our gym battles." Ashley took the lead thankfully since she has gone through this multiple times.
The receptionist looked up at us then typed away at her keyboard. "Alright Ms. Ketchum is up first then after a ten minute break for Leader Roark you will get your turn Ms. Berlitz.
Follow the doors to my right Ms. Ketchum and Berlitz then you can have your battles. Good Luck."
We followed the tunnel and walked out to a big rock field. You could sew the white outer lines that meet in the middle to make a pokeball in the center. There were big rocks and boulders around the field as obstacles for each opponent.
Roark was already standing there ready for us to begin. "Alright this will be a 2v2 battle. Ashley Ketchum is up first."
I wished Ashley a quick good luck and stood off the the side for visitors to watch the battle.
The battle was different compared to the show and Roark didn't use any fully evolved pokemon for the gym battle. Ashley sent our Starly who tied in the battle with Geodude with a lucky steel wing at the last moment.
Then Turtwig went up against the fossil pokemon Cranidos. The battle was also close but Turtwig pulled out with his advantage in range and used the rocks on the field for Cranidos to leave an opening for Razor Leaf.
After Ashley got her badge Roark said he had to go swap pokemon during the 10 minute interval. Ashley wished me luck and I went and stood in the challenger box to get in the mindset of a gym battle.
Once Roark was back things got underway. "As a new challenger to a league unlike Ashley I think it's fair for me to let you know what you're attempting. Thousands of trainers take on the league challenge to gather all 8 gym badges and fight all out in the conference.
After the first six months that number widdles down to about a thousand and by the time the league opening ceremony begins there are only a couple hundred contestants. Do you think you're ready to attempt this trial of a pokemon trainer Dawn Berlitz?"
"More than ready! I'm gonna be the first rookie trainer since Lance to break into the top 8 my first season." I yelled back in determination.
"I like your fire but let's see if you're as sturdy as a rock! Go Larvitar!" Roark grabbed a pokeball off his waist and threw it onto the field. A bi-pedal green rock Lizard was thrown on the field with a spike on its head and a red diamond on its chest.
"Let's go Trident!" I threw Trident our first to take an early advantage. Larvitar has high defenses but compared to a x4 water special attack we got the early advantage.
Before I could even say anything to Trident. Roark used the opportunity to get ahead. "Larvitar use Rock Throw." The green monster quickly threw a rock with precision and power before Trident could react and got nailed in the stomach flying back towards me in the field.
"Quick Trident find cover behind a rock." We needed to regroup from the surprise attack. Trident quickly got behind a boulder and waited for my call as I watched Roark call out another move.
"Larvitar use Rock Slide across the field!" Larvitar lifted his arms up in the air and summoned a bunch of huge rocks and threw them tumbling down the field towards Trident.
"Wait for my call to Trident and then hop up and use water gun." Waiting for the rocks to pass we needed the last moment to get a chance to hit Larvitar. Water gun was still faster than bubble beam so it's our best chance.
Once the rocks crashed into the boulder and shook the ground around us the dust was in the air. Larvitar hasn't moved yet so this was our best chance I think. "Now Trident!"
Quickly Trident ran up between the rocks and launched in the air and shot a water gun across the field nailing Larvitar and doing good damage. Sadly this isn't like the Geodude on the way to Oreburgh. Larvitar stood up and walked it off and charged towards the rock Trident landed on.
"Larvitar use Iron Head on the boulder." Larvitar listened to the command dove at the boulder with a sheen of silver on his head and broke the boulder Trident stood on like it was nothing. Trident tumbled and took some damage and quickly got on another boulder.
He started hopping across some as Larvitar chased and did Iron Head a couple more times. On the last one Trident got a good leap and Larvitar stumbled from the hit to the rock.
"Trident use bubble beam!" I yelled and watched the beam of bubbles hit Larvitar in the back and straight into the ground. I thought that hit would've been enough but Roark was quick with a plan to follow.
"Larvitar use dig and get out of there!" Larvitar was quick to dig underneath the field. Me and Trident both lost sight of him as he went under and waited for him to make an appearance.
Seeing some small rocks move by Trident's feet I wasn't quick enough to call out before Larvitar shot out of the ground and rammed into Trident while surrounded in ground type energy. Before we had a chance to counter Larvitar quickly went back under.
This time Trident was prepared and was able to dodge the next two attempts while taking minimal damage. Seeing the holes everywhere gave me a good idea to flush Larvitar out.
"Trident flood the dig holes with water gun!" Trident ran over to the nearest one and unleashes as much water as he could into the pseudo dig tunnel. Roark tried to yell out to Larvitar to get out but once we saw his body float up with the water he had swirls in his eyes as he was breathing deeply.
Returning his pokemon Roark gave me a look of appraisal. "Not many trainers use the battlefield to their advantage and you put a lot or trust in your pokemon. You might have what it takes to win but I won't let you get it that easily. Shieldon go!"
Now in Larvitars place was a small lizard with a big egg shaped face of steel. A species of my future team member that I get tomorrow is my last wall before my gym badge. Looking at Trident I could tell he was out of it.
After using a water gun like he did he was breathing hard and was covered in bruises from his battle. He tried to stand strong but I could tell he was done for now. "I forfeit Trident. He is in no condition to continue." Trident looked slightly upset but after trying to speak I saw the look of resignation on his face.
"You did great buddy but you're too beat up, let Rose take it from here. Then after we win I'll get a big fish just for you." He perked up at that as I returned him with a proud smile on my face.
"You're proving to be a mature and loving trainer already this early into your career Dawn. I'm always glad to see trainers like you in my gym." I smiled back at him and thanked him while grabbing Roses pokeball.
"Alright Rose, it's all up to you!" Rose appeared on the field with her battle ready face on. The coloring of Rose shocked Roark for a moment before he snapped back into it. If I saw a rookie with a shiny pokemon id probably do the same to be honest.
Not to be outdone like last time I called out to rose to get the first hit in. "Rose, do a quick kick!" I realized calling out combo moves took too long and talked to Rose and we decided this would be the call out for Quick Attack and Double kick.
Rose rocketed across the field bouncing between the rocks before landing a brutal Double Kick to Shieldons side. This time we got the upper hand. Even with the double effective move against Shieldon it did its species proud and tanked the hit like nothing.
"Shieldon use Iron Defense." Shieldon quickly gleamed in a steel color and took the pound attack from Rose like it was a breath of air. Rose was too stunned by doing nothing before getting rammed by an iron head to the gut.
Rose quickly recovered using her skills from training on the obstacle course and bounced away between the rocks. "Keep him guessing Rose comes in from all angles with Quick Kick!" I yelled out.
Rose bounced in and out a couple times and got some hits in but with the defense boost of Iron Defense she was having a rough time. Shieldon tanked it out till Rose messed up and hit her again with Iron Head.
It was a good hit but Rose was still in it! She was definitely tired from all the running around. Roark also noticed Rose's tiredness and took advantage of it.
"Shieldon now is our chance! Hit Buneary with Ancient Power!" Shieldon reared on its back legs and huge rocks with a purple glow appeared and spun as they flew across the field at Rose.
Rose tried her best to dodge but sadly got clipped by one and slowed down enough to get hit by another. Rose was looking in rough shape and I was about to call her back and forfeit when she blurred across the field and punched Shieldon with an orange glowing fist.
My pokedex pinged at me from my hand and I looked at it from surprise.
Buneary has unlocked Power-Up Punch.
This is the chance we need! "Rose blast him with a Power-Up Punch!" She quickly went in again from the side and Shieldon couldn't dodge her speed with a quick attack as she punched him once again.
Her attack should be enough to counteract Iron Defense now! "Rose finish him off with a Double Kick." All you could hear in the gym was Rose's battle cry of "Bun!". As she kicked Shieldon with all her might and created dust in the air.
When the dust cleared Rose was standing over a knocked out Shieldon panting in victory. "Rose, you did it!" I yelled as I ran over and scooped her up in a huge hug. I felt her collapse into me and breathe slowly as I cradled her to my body.
"That Buneary of yours is special and I don't mean her coloring. She battled with everything she had and then some." Roark said as he recalled his Shieldon and walked over to me.
"Yeah she is great." I said as I patted her head and held her softly. Now that I was out of focus on Rose I could also hear Ashley and Pikachu cheering off to the side.
I gave them a quick thumbs up as Roark pulled out a gym badge and a Technical Machine.
"For defeating me you have earned the Coal Badge and this Rock Tomb Technical Machine. Please use it to strengthen your team and push onward to the Sinnoh Conference. I look forward to seeing you and Ashley perform on the big stage." Roark said with a smile and after I got my items we shaked hands in goodbye then I ran over to Ashley after recalling Rose.
I flew at her in a hug and she caught me with no struggle. I had my arms around her neck as her strong arms wrapped around my back. "One down. Seven to go!" I said happily.
"You did great Dawn." she said as we separated but were at arms length. "You trained your team well and won a hard battle, nothing feels better." Ashley said with her infectious smile.
I smiled back and gave her a kiss on her cheek and whispered in her ear "I know some things that feel better". She quickly let go of me but I can tell it was from embarrassment. She was also shocked in place for some reason. Pikachu snickered at her reaction on her shoulder making it even worse.
"Alright let's go back to the Pokecenter and call our parents about winning our battles. We also need to check on our teams for healing!" I said as I took Ashley's hand and we walked out of the gym.
Coming from how Ashley reacts I know she likes me but I wonder why she hasn't done anything yet besides hug me and hold my hand. If she doesn't ask me out by the time we get back to Jubilife I'm just gonna have to do it myself.
The gym was near the Pokecenter so it was a quick trip back and Nurse Joy congratulated us as she took our pokemon to be healed. We made our way to the private video phone booths and hopped into one together to share. Pikachu hopped into my lap and I rubbed the little guys ear earning a cute "Chaaaa…" from him.
I wrapped my arms around the little guy and held him close, a little nervous about meeting Ashley's mom. After Ashley put in the number I felt her put a hand on my thigh and rub it softly as she gave me a reassuring look. I gave her a soft smile feeling better as she continued.
"I'm not interrupting something am I?" Me and Ashley jumped as Delia appeared on the screen with a teasing smile. I felt my blush increase ten fold and coughed into one of my hands. "Mom! Its not what it looks like!" Ashley responded. I was a little sad at the response but Ashley just seemed more embarrassed than even me.
"Oh honey it's fine, I'm just messing with you now, introduce us." Delia gave a happy smile and waved at me from her video camera.
"Well mom this is my new friend Dawn Berlitz. Dawn, this is my mother Delia Ketchum." Delia was a very pretty woman. Even prettier than the anime showed with her limited appearances.
"Ashley has told me a lot of good things about you Ms. Ketchum. And might I say it's nice to know where Ashley gets her good looks." I said honestly and gave Ashley a side glance. I love making her a tomato.
"Oh well aren't you just a charmer? And your last name is Berlitz? You wouldn't happen to be related to Johanna Berlitz would you?" I knew my mom was famous but I thought it was mainly in Sinnoh.
"Yes I am what gave it away?" Maybe she saw some of her videos and was a fan of my mom back in the day.
"Oh you look just like her when we were on the ribbon circuit at your age." I was shocked, I didn't know Delia and my mom knew each other!
"Ehhh Mom, you knew Dawn's Mom? I knew you did contests but you never talked about it." Even Ashley was confused as much as I am. My mom talked about her circuit days but she never really mentioned any friends.
"Well it was a long time ago. It was my last year in the circuit where we decided to travel together. Then I met your father a year later and had you shortly after." This was interesting. The biggest plot opening in the anime.
"Who was Ashley's father?" I asked, trying to not show my excitement at a long lost answer I never knew I needed. Ashley looked annoyed and curious as well.
"Even I don't know she will never tell me." Ashley said annoyed and I could feel her teen angst next to me. Since our hands are hidden I put my left hand in her right. The one that was on my thigh and gave her a squeeze.
"Honey, I told you I would tell you when you're 18. You're only 17 and have a little more patience." Delia chastised Ashley but then we moved onto better topics. We discussed mine and Ashley's gym badge and how traveling has gone.
We then told her we were gonna call my mom and she asked to join so she could say hello and get her number. Shrugging my shoulders I didn't think she would mind. I pressed the add caller button and put my house phone in.
We didn't wait long for the call to click before Johanna appeared and said Berlitz residence. "Hey Mom, wanted to call and check in and for you to meet my friend and apparently an old friend of yours."
"Dawn, it's so good to see you! And if it isn't Delia Hanako I haven't talked to you in years." Well at least my mom looked happy at seeing Ashley's mom.
"Hello Johanna, it's been a while. I wanted to say a quick hello after talking to my daughter and your wonderful daughter. She's quite a charmer. I also wanted to exchange numbers so we could keep in touch" Delia winked at me in the call or I'm guessing she winked at me anyways.
"That would be lovely. I can give you a quick call after so we can catch up." My Mom replied and looked extremely happy with a slight blush on her face. Maybe they had some past experiences with each other?
"Alright call me when you're done. It was wonderful meeting you Dawn and please watch after Ashley. I love you Ashley, be sure to message me later." Delia waved a quick goodbye and was out the call.
"Well that was an unexpected surprise but a good one. I'm guessing I can assume your Delia's daughter?" My mom said as her look went from the closed screen of where Delia was to Ashley.
"Yes mam I didn't even know you two knew each other till my Mom saw how similar Dawn looks to you." Ashley explained to my mom about how the coincidence happened.
"Well that's lovely you look like a black haired version of your mother as well. I just love that you two are traveling together like me and Delia used to." Even though I wasn't looking for approval, it was nice to know that my mom liked the situation we are in.
"It was nice meeting you Ashley but if you don't mind I need a quick word with my daughter okay?" Ashley gave a nod with a quick goodbye as she took Pikachu and exited the video phone booth.
"Well if I didn't know any better your love struck with that girl. She's probably the only one who doesn't know."
I did a slight eep and blushed bright red at the accusation. Damn hormones I can't control!
"I really like her. She's really outgoing and drags you in with that darn smile of hers." I said as I picked at my skirt and tried to not look at the screen.
"Well I'm happy for you Dawn and just for the two of us I think she likes you too." I gave her a smile and nod and then started telling her about my team and how we won our first gym badge. I also told her about the fossil I found and how I would have a Shieldon tomorrow!
"Well you have had quite the journey and a badge in the first week you're doing me proud. Just keep doing your best and you will make it to the conference in no time." She also talked about starting to get bored in twinleaf and picked up some hobbies of sewing and such to pass the time.
We were interrupted by the call for me to get my pokemon from the front booth and said our goodbyes. I quickly got my team before meeting Ashley for a quick dinner and gave Trident a big fish like promised and even gave Rose the best looking carrot i could find. Both of them loved their treats! After that we quickly went to our room and passed out for the night.
