Chapter4: Rivals! Fun Times!

"I haven't had a good battle in a while since I came back to Sinnoh to compete. I figured a trainer like you could give me a feel of competition." "Oh you're on and when I win I'll wipe that smug look off your face. Me and you back on the battlefield! 2v2 no switching!" He also used a Chimchar who you could tell already was getting abused by Paul. I can't wait for the double teams tourney so Ashley can take in the poor thing.

Ashely battled Elekid with Turtwig and managed a tie after a hard fought battle. Turtwig had the advantage at range but Elekid was fast enough to get up close and personal. The battle between Starly and Chimchar was even closer until Starly broke out in a bright light.

Pokemon evolution is one of the coolest things you will ever see in person. There's a ringing gong noise with the bright light that somehow sparkled like the pokemon is being blessed by Arceus himself. Once the Evolution completed a strong Staravia screamed out and used an Aerial Ace to win the battle.

Paul walked off and shocked us both. He has to be worse here than in the anime easily. Ashley was so shocked in rage she could even think of anything to say as the jerk left.

"Well the first step should be talking to him about why he hates being in the ball. Do you know why he refuses to go in one?" Besides at the beginning of the anime Pikachu refused to be in the ball from the get go but we never got a for sure reason why.

"I'm not sure after I learned he hated it I never forced him in. I won't force him now but it would help if he could at least sleep in one or in emergencies." "Yeah the beginning of the season is hectic for the first few gyms but start to calm down for the last four. Usually it helps narrow down who's going to the conference. I feel bad for the early gyms because they have way more work than the later ones." Ashley explained how gyms earlier in the order usually are full time jobs.

While the stronger gyms later on are usually a more part time position. Those later gym leaders usually start a business or help the league in some way with rescued pokemon or going on missions for them in their off time. That's why the big kanto four had their own things.

Giovanni with team rocket. Blaine is a well renowned pokemon professor and scientist. Koga protected the fuschia area and ran a school for people to learn the ways of shinobi. Sabrina had to help protect a large city and had a psychic school.

Compared to early gyms where that get more than a couple thousand battles a year. They rarely only get a couple hundred and less than that even beat them. That's why there are also gym badge limits before you can battle the later gyms. You can actually do the first four in any order.

There is usually a lets call it the historical path of taking the gym leaders on. They all match the games for the path you take to challenge them though. Ashley likes going the historical route because it's there for a reason and is usually the best way to go in terms of time.

So after we're done here we will go challenge Gardenia for the Forest Badge. Sadly like in the game our path is blocked from Oreburgh straight to Eterna city because the bicycle bridge collapsed due to a rampaging pokemon. So we have to go through floaroma town.

Hopefully we don't have to deal with team Plasma at all but knowing Ashley's luck we're in for a rough time. I felt my pokedex ding as I pulled it out of my pack. Finally seeing the notification for Shieldon being ready for pickup I excitedly showed Ashley whose eyes lit up after reading the email.

"Once we're done here we can go straight there. I'm excited to see another fossil pokemon, especially after seeing how strong Roarks Shieldon was yesterday." Roarks Shieldon was a menace in my gym battle but was definitely the type of tank I wanted on my team.

Once I get Shieldon I will have a good balance on my team so far. Empoleon is a good special attacker with good special defense. Lopunny is fast and a good all arounder but will focus on physical attacks. Then Bastiodon will be the wall of my team and set us up for victory with his high defense.

I want to get a Magnezone to battle against any water and flying types. As well as a Scizor for pure speed and agility. Besides the two steel types I'm mostly open for whatever in my last slot. I'm just not sure where I can get a magnemite in sinnoh. I know you could but sadly I can't remember and looking up that sort of thing doesn't give you easy results.

We finally made it to the front and Pikachu waved at us cheerfully as he was brought out. "Your pokemon are all healthy and your Staravia is in top shape after his evolution. I hope you have a good day." Nurse Joy was quick but the line behind us wasn't getting shorter so we understood.

It took us a minute to get outside the Pokecenter but once we did I grabbed Ashley's hand and made a beeline for the fossil lab. "While I'm meeting Shieldon, make sure you talk to Chimchar."

I almost forgot about the little fire monkey with everything that happened afterwards, but I wanted to make sure Ashley remembered so she can talk to the little guy one on one first.

Looking around it looked like your basic lab. Computers and equipment everywhere with desks covered with paper and books. I finally saw the guy I gave my fossil to and made my way through the nerd maze.

"Ah Dawn good timing we just finished the transfer of Shieldon over to your trainer ID." The lab guy finishes typing away at the PC and then I feel my Pokedex ding a few times.

"I just sent the paperwork for everything to your email for your own records sake. If there is anything wrong most Nurse Joys will know what to do but don't be afraid to reach out if they don't . Or if going off your sponsor Professor Rowan should know or have contacts that will." He gave me the breakdown of everything in an efficient manner.

After the quick after care of a Shieldon being revived he gave me the pokeball and I was off my way. Once I was back outside I saw Ashley was still talking to a downtrodden Chimchar so I saw a bench that would be in her view from a distance to go meet Shieldon.

Taking out my pokedex I decided to scan him beforehand so I didn't frighten him with anything.

Shieldon, The Shield Pokemon. It habitually polishes its face by rubbing it against tree trunks. It is weak to attacks from behind.

Shieldon is Male, and has the ability Soundproof. Soundproof grants the Pokémon immunity to all "sound-based" moves, preventing all damage and effects.

Nodding at his description and surprised at the hidden ability I let him out of the ball.

Shieldon looked a lot like Roarks but was a few inches bigger. He looked around confused and then he saw me. He let out a loud. "Shield!"

"Hello Shieldon, I am your trainer Dawn. I was told the lab people that revived you told you about me." Shieldon gave a happy noise and rubbed his surprisingly soft face against my leg. I giggled a little bit because it tickled and rubbed the top of his crest.

"Well I'm glad you like me but I want to make sure you're okay with battling other pokemon and getting stronger to become a Bastiodon." I saw his eyes glaze over and get ready in a stance before he nodded at me quickly.

"Well okay then. Next step with all my team members I give them a nickname. Would you want one as well?" He sat down on his hind legs and nodded. It took me a while to go through some of the names I came up with while waiting to get him but we finally settled on Aegis.

Letting out my team, I let them meet Aegis. Rose seemed the most excited as she is a girl after my own heart. Trident looked at him appraisingly, deciding he looked strong enough to be on the team. They sat around my feet and talked in poke and it was pretty cute to watch.

After a bit I see Pikachu sit down next to Trident then a timid Chimchar sit next to Rose and they join in on the conversation as well. Looking up I see Ashley walking over with her hands in her jacket smiling as she sat down next to me. She wrapped her arm around my waist and pulled me into her side as we watched our pokemon chat.

"Why don't you let your other two pokemon out and then we can walk them over to that pokemon park and let them play till dinner." I pointed towards a park that was empty and made for pokemon to mess around on that was across the street from where we were at.

"That's a great idea!" Ashley perked up as she let out Staravia and Turtwig. We walked them over to the park and let them loose. All the pokemon had a good time as we watched them from the side.

After a bit Pikachu and Rose pulled us towards the park and we ended up joining them to play on the park set. Rose and Aegis enjoyed going down the slide a lot with me and even Trident enjoyed playing tag with everyone seeing it as a competition.

After a while we saw the sun setting and returned everyone to their pokeball. Me and Ashley walked back to the poke center hand in hand to end a pretty great day.
