Chapter 6
Phoebe sat on the floor of her room, meditating as she considered all that she'd learned over the past week. Although she was nervous about the pack bond, her determination had not wavered. She wanted Peter to become alpha, to get revenge on the doctors at Eichen House, and to stop Theo.
At Phoebe's request, Peter had taken the time to explain more about the differences between a pack bond and a mate bond. He'd explained that a mate bond was more like a marriage. It required consummation, and both parties would need to exchange bites during the act. It was more permanent than marriage, though, because breaking a mate bond was so painful that either or both parties could die.
A pack bond on the other hand, was just a way for an alpha to bring another supernatural creature into their pack. While a mate bond had to be done with an alpha, a pack bond could be done by a beta looking to start their own pack. Betas couldn't turn people into werewolves, but betas could still do pack bonds with humans, provided both parties were willing.
Pack bonds, unlike mate bonds, could be broken by either party, although it was difficult, and required a specific ritual. With a pack bond, both could feel a shadow of the other, always knowing where the other person was, and sometimes slivers of emotions would trickle through if they were strong enough. The mate bond was heightened in this. Emotions would often flow freely, and both would always have a strong sense of where the other was.
Phoebe wasn't sure about a mate bond with Peter, because she didn't fully trust him yet, but she definitely wanted a pack bond with him. It would make her a stronger witch, and it would make him a stronger beta, so that he could more easily become an alpha, which would also feed into her magic through their bond.
Opening her eyes, she brought her meditations to a close. Her magic pulsed through her body. She could feel it in every fiber of her being. If they were going to do this, she would want her magic involved.
Standing, she walked into the spacious living room where she found Peter reading on the couch. He looked up when she stopped near him.
"More questions for me, sweetheart? Or are you having second thoughts?"
Phoebe shook her head, staring down at him. "Neither. I just thought we should involve my magic in our pack bond. If we wanted to do that, we could do it next month on the new moon. The new moon would be perfect for it."
Peter shut his book and laid it on the table next to the couch before sitting up and making room for her on the couch. "How would we involve your magic?"
"Well," Phoebe began, sitting next to him. "You said that if a werewolf trusts the other person enough, the other person could bite them too, and it would make the pack bond stronger. Or did I misunderstand?"
"You didn't misunderstand. It would definitely make the pack bond stronger if you bit me too. Is that what you want?"
Phoebe nodded again, drawing her leg up underneath her on the couch to face him more fully. "Yes. If I bite you too, I can infuse some of my magic into the bite. It won't be as strong as a werewolf's pack bite, I'm sure, but I think it would help."
Peter tilted his head, considering. He'd already known a witch could do such a thing, because his sister had once talked about bringing Phoebe fully into the pack after she was finished with college. He knew it wouldn't give the witch any more power over the alpha than she'd already have as someone who wasn't a beta werewolf, and would solidify the pack bond even more. They would only be stronger for it.
Finally, he spoke. "I think that's a good idea."
Phoebe beamed. "Really?"
Peter nodded and grinned. Her enthusiasm was contagious. "Of course." Standing, he moved to the calendar by the fridge. "It looks like next month will be perfect. I was thinking we could sneak out of Beacon Hills for a weekend. The new moon won't be until Sunday night, so we could go on Friday, and plan it for the end of our stay. You could move around freely without worrying about Theo finding you."
"That sounds wonderful," Phoebe exclaimed. "Where?"
"I have a cabin a couple towns over," he said. "We could stay there. It's close enough to go into town, but far enough away that our presence won't be noticed, should someone be there to notice."
