"MINNIE!" Xenophilius Lovegood exclaimed excitedly as Hermione appeared suddenly in his living room. Hermione gave the man a fond smile hearing the nickname. When she had originally spent time in the Lovegood household Hermione had told Luna and her father all about the muggle world. One of the things she introduced them to was Disney cartoons. They had of course loved them and when Hermione told them about going to EuroDisney when she was child they had convinced her to take them as well. The nickname came about because Hermione didn't like to be called her own name in public and Xenophilius claimed it was the perfect nickname because it sounded so much like her real name.
"Hello Xeno." Hermione happily accepted the hug from the man.
"Let me see you." Xenophilius pulled out of the hug and looked Hermione over. "I don't think I know who you are this time."
"I am a women I met on my travels. The potion should ware off in a couple hours." Hermione told him.
"Where were you this time?" Xenophilius motioned to the couch. "Sit, sit, do you want some tea? Something to eat?"
Hermione shook her head. "No I'm good thank you. Is Luna still at work?"
"She should be home any minute. We didn't know to expect you or she would be here already." Xenophilius said.
"Sorry,I was going to send word but I wasn't sure exactly when I was coming." Hermione told him.
"That's fine" Xenophilius waved away the apology."You know you can come anytime you want. This is your home you don't have to tell us when you are coming ahead of time."
"Thank you Xeno." Hermione always found herself getting emotional when Xeno or Luna said something like that. She knew they meant it and Hermione was grateful to be considered a member of their family.
"Minnie!" Luna exclaimed just as excited as her father when she stepped out of the fire place and saw Hermione sitting on the couch. "You're home."
"Hello Luna." Hermione happily greeted her friend.
"You should have sent word you were here. I would have come home right away." Luna said.
"I just got here." Hermione told her.
"I'm happy to see you. Even if I'm not really seeing you that is." Luna had gotten used to the various different people Hermione disguised herself as but it still made her sad that her friend wanted so badly to hide from the world. Luna understood why Hermione didn't want people to find her but it was still sad because Luna knew Hermione wasn't living her life to the fullest. As far as she knew Luna and her father were the only people that Hermione ever kept in touch with and anyone else she had met after the war didn't know who she really was.
"It will ware off in a couple hours." Hermione looked Luna over. It was always humorous for her to see Luna who was such a free spirit be dressed up in such boring professional clothing. Her job demanded that she dress that way but Hermione always felt like she was looking at an imposter and not Luna when she was dressed for work.
"She was just about to tell me where she had been." Xenophilius said.
"Let me just change and then you can tell both of us." Luna quickly rushed off to her room. It took her less than a minute to get all her things put away and to get herself changed into much more comfortable clothing. Reentering the living room she took a seat in one of the arm chairs. "Now what kind of trouble did you get into since the last time we spoke?"
"Before I tell you I have some more money for you to deposit into your vault." Hermione pulled out a large leather pouch filled with coins and handed it to Luna.
Luna sighed as she took the sack. "It isn't my vault."
"You are as much of an owner as I am." Hermione reminded her.
"And I once again thank you for that but I have a better job now. With this promotion we won't have to rely on your help as much." Luna was grateful that Hermione was so generous with her wealth because after the war many members of the magical community shunned her and her father for his betrayal during the war that led to Hermione being captured and tortured by Bellatrix. Hermione not only helped them out finically she vouched for them which led to Luna getting her current job and her father getting his paper up and running. She even did exclusive interviews when he began putting out publications to give him some respectability. Being the only media outlet that the savior spoke to gave her father the credibility he needed to get his publication not only off the ground but to actually thrive.
"I don't have any use for the money so someone might as well use it." Hermione didn't care about how rich she was. With the way she lived her life money wasn't that important. If she needed some she would sell an item or two.
"Thank you." Luna knew it was just easier to thank Hermione than to fight her about not needing the help.
"Anyway, what did you find this time?" Xenophilius asked impatiently.
"I found the Yeti." Hermione told them.
"Yeti!" Xenophilius exclaimed. "Please tell me you got pictures."
"Of course I got pictures." Hermione pulled out a folder from her bag and handed them to the man.
Xenophilius looked through the pictures handing Luna the ones he looked at. "These are amazing. What were they like?"
"It took me four months of actual searching after I gathered all the information I could from people about them. They live in the highest peaks of the Altar Mountains in Kazakhstan. I found a group of five of them living together although two of them had individual caves they lived in whereas the other three shared one." Hermione said.
"Were they parents and a child?" Luna asked.
Hermione shrugged. "I don't know. They didn't interact like humans do so it wasn't easy to pick out what their relationships were. Two of them were female and the other was male. I stayed with them for a month but didn't observe any kind of mating rituals."
"Interesting." Xenophilius murmured. "How did they react to you?"
"They really didn't like me." Hermione chuckled thinking about her first encounter with the Yeti. "The first time one of the Yeti saw me it got pissed off and chased me over a mile before it stopped and went back to it's home."
"It chased you over a mile?" Hermione nodded causing Luna to have more questions. "Why didn't you use magic to stop it?"
"I was so scared of the thing that I forgot magic existed. The only thing on my mind was to get away from it." Hermione admitted.
Luna and her father laughed. "You the girl who single handedly defeated Voldemort was afraid of a Yeti?!"
"It was a lot scarier in person." Hermione grumbled hating that she could feel the blush covering her face.
"Sure it was." Xenophilius agreed.
"Oh shut up." Hermione gave in and laughed with her friends. It was funny looking back at the event but at the time she was really afraid she was going to die.
"Sorry it's so hard to think about you running through the mountains with an 8ft animal chasing you and you not thinking about using magic to defend yourself and not laugh." Luna said.
"If you both are going to make fun of me then I guess you don't want the gifts I brought back for you." Hermione teased.
"Ok we will be good. Now what did you bring us?" Xenophilius asked excitedly.
Hermione smiled at the man as she handed him a small bag. "This is a gift from the yeti."
"You got some of it's fur?!" Xenophilius face was full of awe as he pulled some of the white and grey fur out of the bag.
"I staked out one of their caves and waited for it to leave. Once he was gone I waited a little while then snuck in and took as much as I could before it came back." Hermione told him.
"I'm going to have to test this." Xenophilius mumbled as he stood up from his chair and wandered out of the room.
Luna shook her head fondly as she watched her father leave. "That should keep him busy for a few days."
"At least." Hermione agreed.
"Now that he is gone tell me how you have been?" Luna asked.
"I've been good. Keeping busy." Hermione said.
"How have you been keeping busy? Have you been doing more than just working?" Luna worried about Hermione. She was to isolated. It wasn't healthy to be so withdrawn from other people.
"I have visited Remy." Hermione knew that Luna wouldn't accept that as an answer and move on.
"For work? Or are you saying that you finally accepted his invitation to have tea with him?" Luna didn't believe for a minute that Hermione actually stayed and had a conversation with the man.
Hermione shook her head. "I was in a hurry. I didn't have time to stay."
"And what were you in a hurry to do?" Luna wasn't going to let it go.
"I needed to check for messages at the inn." Hermione said. "I had been away from society for months something could have happened that I needed to know about."
Luna sighed. "I worry about you."
"I know but you don't need to. I'm perfectly fine." Hermione told her.
"You're not fine but I will let it go for now." Luna would just bring it up again later. She wasn't going to let Hermione hide away forever.
"Thank you." Hermione knew what Luna was thinking but would take the reprieve while she could. "Now tell me about your promotion."
"Well it's been going good so far. I have been working on a few cases that my predecessor left behind. One thing of interest happened yesterday though." Luna said.
"Oh what would that be?" Hermione asked.
"As it's not officially part of a case yet I can talk about it. Apparently Sabine Delacour has set up a meeting with me for tomorrow." Luna was still confused why the French woman wanted to speak to her.
"Delacour, as in Fleur Delacour?" Hermione asked.
Luna nodded. "Yes it's her grandmother. Fleur is actually going to be at the meeting as well."
"Now that's a person I haven't thought about in a while." Hermione lied. She often thought about Fleur. The blond had stolen her attention from the first time Hermione had seen her enter Hogwarts. When they saw each other years later Hermione felt just as drawn to the blond as she did the first time. It was actually because of Fleur that Hermione was able to push past what happened at Malfoy manor and continue fighting.
"Yeah me neither. I don't know why they would want to talk to me. Did you know her that well?" Luna asked. Something about the wistful look in her friend's eyes made her think that Fleur was someone that was important to Hermione.
"I don't know about knowing her that well. She's the one who helped me after the incident with Bellatrix. We got to know each other a bit while I was recovering." Noticing Luna wince at the memory of her father's betrayal Hermione reached out and grasped her hand. "I don't blame you or Xeno for what happened. He was trying to keep you safe."
"I know it's just what happened to you is so awful. I can't help but feel somewhat responsible for it." Luna knew that Hermione was being truthful when she said she didn't blame them but every time Luna got a glimpse of the scar on Hermione's forearm she felt guilty for her and her father's role in what happened.
"You are my best friend and I love you. You need to let it go. It was war, we all did what we had to to survive." Hermione said.
Luna took a deep breath and gave Hermione's hand one last squeeze before letting it go. "Thank you."
"So you don't know why the Delacours are going to visit you?" Hermione asked changing the subject.
"Not a clue. I mean I work with magical creatures and they are Veela but they are French. We don't have jurisdiction over them." Luna was happy Hermione changed topics. It was nicer talking about anything other than the war.
"That's not true. Didn't she marry one of the Weasleys?" Hermione had read the wedding announcement in the paper. It was a sharp blow to her at the time. She didn't know if it was because Fleur was getting married or that she was marrying a Weasley that bothered her so much.
"Oh yeah. She married Bill. I think they both work at the bank." Luna hadn't been invited to the wedding. At the time it was happening she and her father had been shunned so they hadn't been invited to many things.
"Maybe it has something to do with their marriage then." Hermione didn't know what else it could be. She was only involved with the outskirts of the magical world so she wasn't up to date with all the gossip.
"Could be. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. How about we start on dinner. Maybe we can watch one of those movie films you sent with the last package." Luna said.
"Sounds good." Hermione agreed. She hadn't had a home cooked meal since the last time she had visited the Lovegoods. Not that she would tell Luna that as it would just give her one more thing to harp at Hermione about. As she stood from the couch and made her way to the kitchen Hermione's thoughts turned back to Fleur. If there was a single person that she truly missed from her past life it would have to be the blond. She and Fleur just clicked. If she were a braver person Hermione would have actually reached out to her over the years. Unfortunately she wasn't a brave person and because of that she was left with a lot of what ifs when it came to her relationship with Fleur. Sighing she decided to push the thought out of her head. Fleur was just another name and face from the past that Hermione would probably never see again. No use dwelling on what could have been.
