Rosalie
The day after we returned, we had a family meeting. My family, the pack, and all of the imprints met to discuss patrol schedules and a strategy for dealing with Victoria moving forward. She had made a few more visits to Forks, but always seemed to escape us. I wished in a way that Edward would come back, as he was probably fast enough to catch her.
They wanted one of us and one wolf on patrol at all times, so we were paired off. I had expected to be paired with Leah, but they felt more comfortable putting the females in our family with the strongest wolves. The wolves outnumbered us, so a few of us had more than one patrol partner. We didn't mind the extra work. I was paired with Sam, and we had grown a lot more comfortable with each other.
We maintained our patrol schedule for six weeks and Victoria became increasingly brazen in her attempts to get to Bella. Jacob picked up her scent at the police station when he had went to see Charlie, so we had to start including Forks in our patrol route. Billy came up with excuses for Charlie to spend most of his free time on the reservation, but we still worried about him being at work unprotected. Jared decided to apply for a position with the department and Billy made sure his schedule was the same as Charlie's.
Leah was becoming one of my closest friends now that Embry wasn't around much. Sam lifted the alpha order since there would be times we would have to be together, but Embry didn't try to have a relationship with me. Leah spent most nights at my house, since Emmett and Paul both had overnight patrols. We sometimes would stay with the rest of the family but mostly preferred to stick to ourselves.
I had a new understanding of Paul's relationship with Leah, and she actually helped me to improve things between the two of us. We weren't getting to see each other as often as we'd like with the increased patrols, but things were going really well for the two of us.
Leah followed me as I walked to the family home. Emmett and Paul were coming back, and Sam and I would be leaving to take over. Normally, they would stay until we got there to relieve them but Sam had called a short meeting for this afternoon. I hadn't had much of a chance to see anyone since we increased patrols and had to cover for Jared, and I was excited to visit for a few minutes.
When we walked in the door, Bella ran to greet me. She smelled a little different, more like Jacob. She insisted that I sit with her and we fell in to an easy conversation. Paul and Emmett walked in and sat down toward the back of the room with Jared. Sam walked to the front and cleared his throat getting everyone's attention.
"I'll try to make this really quick for everyone, I know that Jared needs to get back to the station. Jacob has an announcement to make." Sam stepped aside and Jacob got up and walked to the front of the room.
"We've decided that it's time for us to learn who Embry's father is. Carlisle has organized a DNA test for us. All of the males in the pack will be tested. We should have the results of that in a few weeks." My heart ached for Embry, I knew this had to be difficult for him. I looked at him and I could see the pain in his eyes when they met mine.
"On a happier note, Bella is pregnant! We are expecting the first pack baby!"
My heart dropped. I was excited for Bella, but heartbroken that I would never be able to have a child. I hadn't thought about everything Paul was giving up to be with me. I felt a hand grab my shoulder and I looked up to see Paul smiling down at me. The room had erupted in tears and squeals from all of the girls.
I grabbed Bella's hand and squeezed it lightly. "Congratulations, Bells. I'm so happy for you and Jacob."
Sam came back to stand by Jacob. "We will be having a bonfire to celebrate and Jasper is organizing a new patrol schedule for us so that everyone can attend. We will be doing 20 minute patrols through the party. Does anyone else have anything to add?"
Jared and Jasper stood up. "We do." Jasper said. They took Sam and Jacob's spots at the front of the room. Seeing Jared in uniform was odd, but it seemed to suit him.
"I don't want to be the bearer of bad news after Jacob's announcement, but we have an update on Angela." Jared told us. He looked over to Jasper to continue.
Jasper looked down before speaking. "It seems that Angela may be one of our kind now. There was a car accident in Seattle and the DNA matches hers, but something is off. We've done this enough times for me to recognize when something isn't right."
"Who would have faked her death?" I asked.
Alice spoke up. "I can't see Victoria's future. There have been a lot of disappearances in Seattle. It seems someone is building an army."
"So when do we leave?" Emmett asked.
Jasper shook his head. "We're stretched too thin as it is. We've reached out to the Denali coven for assistance and they want Rosalie's death in exchange since she killed Laurent. We didn't mention Embry's involvement."
"Over my dead body." Paul growled.
"Or mine." Jasper agreed. "We don't have the manpower to go to Seattle right now, but we need to remain focused and try to apprehend Victoria if she returns. We may need to up the patrols to three people at all times. If Angela does come back here with an army, we will have to kill her."
"Why would Victoria go to the trouble of faking her death though?" I wondered. "She doesn't seem to care who she hurts, why worry about giving Ange's family's closure?"
Jasper started to answer and Alice cut him off. "It may have been to throw us off her trail, I suppose." Jasper shot her a strange glance but didn't disagree.
"We will be careful, Jasper. The pack understands that all red eyed vamps are enemies, no matter who they were before." Sam told him. He looked over to me. "You ready to go, Rosalie?"
I nodded and stood up to go. Paul walked around the couch to meet me before I walked out the door. He pulled me in to a hug and softly kissed my forehead.
"I love you, babe. Please be safe. I'll see you when you get home." He pulled back and brushed his lips against mine softly.
"I love you too, Paul. I'll see you in a few hours."
I ran out and followed Sam. He and Emily had a strained relationship since Leah joined the pack, and it was taking a toll on Sam. She had been spending a lot of time with her family at the Makah reservation and the separation was painful for him. He also had to deal with his feelings for Leah, which hadn't been completely erased by either of them imprinting.
Our patrol was going quietly with no sign of Victoria. Sam phased about halfway through and walked beside me as a human, venting about Emily. I rarely offered any input but I knew he appreciated having an outlet.
We were almost to Charlie Swan's place in Forks when we caught a scent. It wasn't Victoria, and it wasn't someone we recognized. Sam phased and howled for the rest of the pack to join us. I got ahead of Sam and I saw Alice chasing a girl with long dark hair. Why was she ahead of us? Sam had only howled a second ago and she was already in Forks behind this girl? I yelled for her and she didn't turn around. Was she in on this?
We were coming up on the reservation and Paul had caught up to me. We were almost to the edge of the cliffs when I bypassed Alice and almost grabbed the girl. She turned around and threw me back in to Alice. She must have been a newborn. I tried to get back up but Alice was holding me back. The rest of the pack hadn't caught up to us yet.
"Paul, get her!" I yelled.
He kept charging toward her and grabbed her leg in his mouth. He started to pull her back when someone else appeared and knocked him off of her. I only caught the slightest glimpse but the bronze hair gave away his identity; Edward. The girl jumped off the cliff before Paul could get close enough to them again, and Edward followed her. Alice was still holding me down and Paul turned and growled at her. She hesitantly let me go.
"What the fuck was that Alice?" I screamed at her.
"A misunderstanding is what it was. We have to tell the pack that it was just a misunderstanding."
Paul phased back. "Not sure if you forgot, but we share the pack mind. They all saw your bloodsucking brother with red eyes and they saw you holding Rosalie back."
"Don't blame him!" Alice shrieked. "He's only trying to help us."
I was enraged that she was defending him. His eyes were red?
"Help us? He attacked Paul! He voided the treaty! Who the hell was that girl?"
Someone nudged me and I turned to face my family and the entire pack.
"I think this conversation would be better at our home, Rosalie." Carlisle told me. Jasper stood by his side, glaring at Alice. The disgust was evident on his face.
Paul phased back and a few of the wolves followed me back to my house. They loved my family, but Alice wasn't pack and she held me down while the nomad got away. Paul stood close to me on one side and Sam was on the other. Embry, Leah, Quil, and Seth ran behind us. I wished for a moment that I could be in the pack mind and hear what they were thinking. As we approached the house, the wolves all stopped and phased and spaced out in the woods.
"We'd prefer to stay outside for this, Carlisle." Sam announced. "I don't want anyone to phase in your house and break anything."
Carlisle nodded his understanding and my family lined up across from us. Bella and Emily came outside and sat down on the porch to listen.
"Alice, what have you done?" Jasper asked her.
She moved to touch him and he flinched. "Jas, you don't understand."
"Then enlighten us." Carlisle said to her.
"I didn't see them until they were almost here. The girl was going to Charlie's house. Rose and Sam must not have decided to go by there until much later. I saw myself being able to intercept her and talk to her, but it wouldn't work with the wolves involved. It was just the girl, I didn't see anyone else originally." She explained.
"When was the original vision?" Jacob asked.
She looked down. "About a week ago. I was going to tell everyone, but when the vision changed and I saw him-"
The color flushed from Bella's face and she stood up. "Who did you see, Alice?"
"Edward. He's been tracking Victoria, and he's planning to come back for Bella. He didn't know we were here."
Many of the wolves phased from the anger of Alice hiding this from us and from Edward's return. Jacob had kept calm and ran to comfort Bella. Esme walked to Alice's side.
"Alice, did you see anything bad happening if you told us?" She asked her.
"I've been working to develop my gift and I can see some of the wolves now. I was going to tell Carlisle, Sam, Jasper, and Jacob together. If I did that, they killed Edward when he came. I couldn't let them kill my brother."
"Who would have killed him?" Sam asked.
She looked down. "Jasper would have."
"Do you see how that makes it more suspicious, Ali?" Emmett asked her. "Jasper and Edward have been close for years, and we may not be happy with him but there has to be something you're leaving out here."
She didn't answer him and wouldn't look at any of us directly.
"Alice, why don't you go inside while we talk?" Carlisle asked her.
Jasper stood back as Alice walked away, toward my house. Bella was hyperventilating while Esme and Jacob were trying to comfort her.
"Carlisle, does everyone need to be involved in this decision?" I asked.
He looked at me appreciatively. "I think everyone can go inside except for me, Jasper, Sam, and Jacob."
Emmett looked over at Paul and back at Carlisle. "Paul and I will stay too."
The rest of us walked inside, mostly for Bella's comfort. She was terrified of my brother's return. I joined Esme in the kitchen and we started to cook dinner for everyone while Leah and Seth kept Bella calm. Embry decided to go patrol in case anyone came back while we were waiting on the guys to decide what we would do about Alice and Edward. I was angry with Alice, but I couldn't fault her for protecting him and her mate. There were few things I wouldn't do to protect Emmett and Paul.
While Bella and the pack ate, I went to see Alice. I walked up to her room and saw her sitting on her bed texting someone.
"Trying to reach Edward?" I asked her.
She looked toward me but wouldn't meet my eyes. "Rosalie, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have held you back." I sat down next to her and she laid her head on my shoulder.
"Why were his eyes red?" I had to know what he'd done before I decided if I would help them.
"I honestly have no idea. I don't know who the girl is either, or why he's protecting her. He won't talk to me." She looked so defeated.
I stood up and stretched my hand out to her. "Let's go, then."
She looked bewilderedly at me. "Go where? The wolves won't let me out of this house."
"Well we aren't going out the front door." I laughed. "We're going to find our brother and the girl he's protecting. Maybe she'll be our new sister."
She took my hand and followed me down the hallway. Jared and Paul's room was the furthest away from where the men were discussing everything outside. If we could jump out of the window and jump between the trees, they shouldn't see or hear us. Alice jumped out first, and I followed closely behind her jumping from tree to tree. Once we were a safe enough distance from the reservation, we jumped to the ground to run on foot.
"Can you see anything? Where do you think he went?"
She closed her eyes for a moment. "He's in Seattle. I can only see him watching the chaos, I don't know how long he'll stay."
We were about to take off when we heard a howl. I turned around to see Embry, who we had forgotten was patrolling. Alice and I were faster than him and had a head start on most of the other wolves. We ran until we reached a cliff and dove in to the water. The wolves wouldn't follow us in the water, and we were too far ahead of our family for them to catch up. I hoped that we could find Edward, and that he had an explanation for his new eye color. After swimming for what felt like forever, we found a shore to rest on.
"You didn't tell me we'd be ruining a perfectly good outfit, sister." Alice groaned.
"I didn't hear you giving a better idea than diving off the cliff."
We sat there for a few minutes bickering and reminiscing. I really hadn't spent a ton of time with Alice since our family left Forks and I had missed her a lot. She told me about how much she missed Edward and how frustrating it was to not be able to see him clearly. I felt really badly for her. We both turned around quickly when we heard someone approaching.
"How would they have found us this quick?" I asked her.
"I didn't see anyone coming for us."
"Should we run, Alice?"
I heard a familiar scoff from behind me. "You won't get too far, babe." Paul. He ran to me and wrapped his arms around me. "Why did you leave?"
I looked to Alice and she nodded. "We're going to find Edward." I told him.
"Not by yourselves you're not! I'll go with you, but if he bit a human-"
"You will not kill my brother, dog." Alice growled.
"I might not have a choice, Alice." He told her.
We heard someone else approaching and turned to see Leah and Emmett.
"You guys made it way too easy to find you." Emmett told us. "I heard what you said, and we're going with you."
"Do Sam or Jasper know where you are?" I asked.
"They think we're looking for you. That buys us a few hours at least." Leah told me.
"I see them arriving in Seattle now." Alice said.
"Let's go then." Paul agreed and we took off.
Paul and Leah didn't phase, not wanting Sam to know they had found us yet. We only ran to Port Angeles where we bought a car. I was going to rent one but Emmett admitted he had wanted to buy one for Leah anyway. Since we were paying and not financing, we were in and out quickly. I had to admit that Emmett and Leah complimented each other perfectly. It hurt a little to see him with someone else, but I was glad that it was her. I certainly hadn't expected Leah to become one of my closest friends. I remembered the night we aired out our issues at my house.
"Why'd you want to get me away from Paul, leech? We both know I can take you in a fight if that's your plan." She sneered at me.
"I'm not going to fight you, Leah. Why do you insist on having a problem with me?"
She started shaking. "This is all your bloodsucking family's fault! I may have imprinted on Emmett but it's because of you that I lost Sam, Emily, and Paul."
"We didn't know that coming back would cause any of you to phase!" I shrieked.
"Yeah, likely story. You're just innocent little Rose that never does anything wrong."
"You don't know a damn thing about me, dog. Why are you so jealous over Paul anyway? Unless you guys have been sleeping together."
She started laughing. "I didn't sleep with Paul, as in have sex with him. Paul is like an older Seth to me, that's disgusting."
"Oh? So you sleep next to Seth in just his t shirt?"
"Well, no. He's smaller than I am. But I've slept in my damn living room in just Paul's shirts before. He had a really rough childhood and my family took care of him."
"So you're not sleeping with him?" I still didn't believe her.
"Have you slept with Jasper?" She asked.
"No, that's disgusting he's my brother."
"He's not your real brother."
"He may as well be. I couldn't sleep with him."
"Exactly. I'm hurt because Paul was my brother and my best friend and he left me for Sam and Emily and nobody could tell me why. I didn't mean to hurt you, you were just collateral damage."
We moved to sit down next to each other. "You act like they had a choice, Leah."
"They did! They still do! Sam doesn't, but Emily does."
"What do you mean?" What kind of choice did Emily have?
"We have to be whatever our imprint wants. If Emily had told him she just wanted a friend, brother, or protector he could've stayed with me. She wanted him for herself."
"Nobody explained that to me."
"Would it have made a difference? Or would you still have broken Emmett's heart?"
"That's not fair, Leah."
"It is. See, we both got screwed by imprinting. I fucking hate imprinting. I'll never know if Emmett would have loved me if I hadn't imprinted or if it's just the magic drawing him to me."
"I can help you with that. Has Emmett told you how he was turned?"
"He told me that he was attacked by a bear and he was dying until an angel found him and carried him for miles before turning him. He woke up three days later and joined your family. It seems weird to think of Carlisle as an angel, though." He always had called me an angel. It warmed my heart to hear her retell the tale.
"Carlisle wasn't the angel, Leah. It was me. I carried him for over a hundred miles and begged Carlisle to change him. I had never had human blood and I wasn't sure I would be able to stop. He has always felt an extreme sense of loyalty to me for saving him. He didn't attack you for trying to hurt me. That's how I know he loves you."
She teared up and I would have too if I could. "Thank you for saving him, Rosalie. I know he loves you too."
"We always knew we weren't mates. I'm happy that he's with his true mate now."
"I'm glad that Paul found you too. I think you two are perfect for each other."
"I'm not so sure I agree. It seems we are always at odds."
"That's because you don't trust him. You listened to Emily and Embry."
"Tread lightly. Embry is the only one that's been here for me this whole time."
"Embry is a good guy but he has a lot of anger around phasing. You've been his outlet and I think he's causing problems between you and Paul so you won't abandon him."
"I wouldn't ever do-"
She put her hand up. "It doesn't matter. Sam ordered him to stay away."
"Why would he do that?"
"The pack asked him to. Not just Paul, we all agreed."
"Even Quil and Jacob?"
"Even them, yes. They're with him now. He'll be okay."
I will never forget the pain in Embry's eyes the next time I saw him. He had wanted to speak to me but couldn't. I lashed out at Sam a few times before Jasper told me I couldn't blame him. We were all angry when Carlisle forced us away based on Edward's wishes alone, so I had to at least respect that Sam was making his decisions based on what the majority of the pack wanted. I was unhappy about being separated from Embry, but I eventually had to accept it.
Leah was bickering with Emmett for not letting her drive her new car. As we approached Seattle we agreed that we would call Jasper and Sam and let them know we were spending the night. The two of them led the family and coordinated the patrol schedules. Paul called Sam and he took the news better than I had expected. Alice had tried to call Jasper, but he wouldn't take her call. We got a room at a nice hotel and I told everyone I would go out and get food for Paul and Leah. I really wanted a chance to find Edward on my own.
I am by no means a tracker, but I know my brother's habits. The problem is, if I get close enough for him to read my thoughts he may try to run. I had assumed that his eyes were red from hunting people that he felt deserved it the way he had years ago. I parked Leah's car near the restaurant and ran through the alleyways to a bad part of town. Crime was rampant and I worried about running in to a newborn, but I pressed on in my pursuit of my brother. I heard a woman screaming and ran toward her. A man was holding a knife to her throat and demanding she give him her handbag. She complied, but he didn't back off. His face was uncovered. I wanted to intervene but I waited to see if Edward would first. He pushed the knife against her skin and my throat burned as the smell of her blood filled the air. Before I could move to help her, Edward knocked the man down. The woman had just a small knick on her neck. While Edward was dealing with the man, I ran over to her.
"Are you okay?" I asked. "Come on, I can help you."
"He's going to kill that man! He has a knife!" She was screaming. Edward looked toward us, his expression pained from the smell of her blood.
"Don't worry about my brother, let's get you out of here." I put my arm around her and ushered her out of the alleyway.
"How is he not afraid? That man could kill him with his knife!"
"My brother is skilled in combat. He will take care of it, I promise." We had approached her car and I helped her inside.
"Please thank him for saving me. You are both angels."
"I will." I told her. "Have a good night, and please stay safe."
I watched as the woman drove away before walking back to Edward. He was draining the man, who had finally stopped screaming.
"It's good to see you, brother." I told him.
He looked up at me and wiped the blood off of his face. "I wish I could say the same."
"Why did you start feeding from humans again?"
"Because of you, Rosalie."
I was seeing red. He couldn't actually be blaming me. "How the hell are you going to blame me for this?"
He ran to me and took my hand. "I didn't mean that it's your fault. Come with me, and let me explain."
I followed him to our family home in Seattle. I hadn't expected that he would come here, since that would normally be the first place someone would suspect. I could smell another of our kind here and I wondered if it was the girl he was with in Forks. He seemed to have been here for awhile, the place was messy and well lived in.
"How long have you been here, Edward?"
He didn't meet my eyes. "I tracked Victoria back to Forks months ago. She's been staying in Seattle as well."
"She's been giving us a time in Forks as well. I took care of Laurent not long ago when he tried to kill Bella as a favor to her."
He looked shocked. "You? You killed Laurent?"
"With help from a friend. Embry, one of the wolves."
"The one that was with you and Alice?" I had almost forgotten that he attacked Paul.
"No, that one was Paul. He's my mate."
His eyes widened. "Your mate?"
"Yes, my mate." I growled. "Is there a problem?"
"No, I'm just surprised." He answered. "I met my mate recently. It isn't Bella, after all."
"I could have told you that much. You wouldn't have left her stumbling in the woods for hours if she was your mate." I answered coldly.
"I left her on the trail near her house, I can't help it if she followed me."
I growled at him. "Why don't you just explain why you are killing humans so I can be on my way?"
"It goes back to meeting my mate." He replied. "Unfortunately, she met the same fate as you. I was walking through the streets and I heard her thoughts before her screams. There were four men assaulting her and they weren't planning on letting her live. Did you know that Victoria is creating newborns?" I nodded. "One of them smelled her blood and got to her before I had finished killing the men. I killed the newborn too, but I was too late to stop her transformation."
I was livid. I couldn't believe this was happening to someone else. I wished I had been here to help Edward dispose of them.
"Is she here? I'd love to meet her."
He chuckled. "You've met her once or twice already."
"Hi, Rosalie." I heard a soft voice behind me and turned to face her. "It's been awhile!"
Angela Webber stood before me with bright golden eyes. Edward has been the one to fake Angela's death. "Angela! What happened? You disappeared!"
"Victoria has approached me in Forks. She wanted me to help her by luring Bella away from you and the pack. Of course, I didn't know what you were at the time. I didn't want my family to be in danger so I ran away. Looks like she got to me after all, though."
My heart was broken for her. "We have all been looking for you. I am so glad Edward saved you." I pulled her in to a hug. "Why don't you guys come with me? Alice, Emmett, and a few of the pack members are waiting for me at a hotel."
"As long as you protect us from the mutts." Edward said.
"You have to stop that, Edward. They're our family."
"I would love to go, Rosalie." Angela agreed.
We drove to get the food for Leah and Paul. Angela went in to the restaurant with me and helped me pick up their order. She was baffled at how much food the two of them could consume. When we arrived at the room, I told Angela to go first. I was excited to see everyone's reaction to her. She knocked on the door and I could hear my everyone arguing over who would be the one to answer it. Finally, Alice came to the door.
"Angela! It's Angela, guys!" She exclaimed. Everyone was at the door in a few moments swarming her.
Emmett swooped her in to one of his famous bear hugs. "We are so glad you're okay! I hate that you're on of us, but we'll protect you I promise."
We all walked in and the mood changed when they saw Edward.
"What is he doing here, Rose? We were supposed to be going to look for him together." Paul asked me. He walked up behind me and wrapped his arms around me protectively.
"He saved me." Angela told him. "That's why his eyes are red. Edward is my mate."
"That is wonderful!" Alice shrieked. "Why don't we head back to Forks tonight? The rest of the family will be so happy to see you, Angela."
"We can't do that, Alice. Bella won't be too happy to see Edward and I'm sure he isn't going to let us take his mate without him." Leah told her.
"No, it's okay. She can go if she wants to." Edward agreed. "Maybe she will be able to convince the pack and Bella that I can be trusted. Her eyes are yellow, after all."
Edward's agreement made me uneasy. Why would he be so willing to let her go with us? Mated vampires are similar to imprinted couples, the separation is physically painful. I was trying to trust him, but I found myself doubting his intentions. I needed to find a way to keep this from happening without letting Edward know I was on to him. I couldn't help but notice that he separated Bella from the pack in his statement and decided to clarify.
"Bella is pack now." I told him simply.
He grimaced. "How exactly is that?"
"She's our future Alpha's mate. You know, Jacob Black?" Leah told him.
Edward's eyes darkened and I didn't need Jasper's gift to feel the rage that was emanating from him. Angela may think she's Edward's mate, but I didn't.
"Now may not be the best time for a visit anyway. Charlie is coming over tomorrow and we wouldn't want him to see Angela." I told them. This wasn't true, but I hoped they would play along. I made sure to think about Bella telling me he would be there, even though it didn't happen.
"I forgot all about that." Leah told me. "Bella invited him over to hear the big news."
"Yes, I'm so excited to announce our engagement to everyone." Emmett told Leah. He bent down to kiss her.
"Why would Charlie be interested in that?" Edward wondered.
"Charlie is my godfather." Leah told him.
I hadn't known that, but it wouldn't surprise me.
"Maybe we can plan something next week? Edward could join me." Angela suggested.
"Of course. They will give us time to discuss with Sam and Jasper. Let's exchange numbers." Paul responded.
I was careful with my thoughts around Edward and focused on memories of sex with Paul so he wouldn't listen to me. I'm sure Paul and Emmett's minds were always that crude. I was ready for them to leave.
"We actually should probably get back and let the family know that we found you. It was so good to see you, Angela." I hugged her again.
"Rose, why don't us girls go pull the car around?" Leah suggested.
"I'll stay behind." Alice told us. "Would you actually mind giving us a moment alone?"
"No, not at all." Emmett offered.
I did mind. I was suspicious of Alice too, but I tried not to think about it so Edward wouldn't catch on. Leah and Paul were gathering their food and Paul spilled his drink. I knew it was intentional, because he wasn't that uncoordinated. He cleaned up the mess and I noticed Emmett's jacket was left behind. We walked out the door together and Emmett stopped at the end of the hallway.
"I don't think Edward can hear our thoughts." He told me.
"Why not? He always has been able to."
"Edward has always reacted to our thoughts. Answered something we said inside our head, asked me to get my mind out of the gutter, something. Did you see how different he's acting? His gift doesn't seem to be working on us." Emmett explained.
"Is it because you're pack?" Leah asked.
"Maybe?" I replied. "But he could hear Jacob's thoughts before."
"Jake hadn't phased yet the last time he saw Edward." Paul said.
Emmett shook his head. "I don't trust any of them. I think that Angela really thinks she's Edward's mate, but I'm not buying it. Whatever he has planned, Alice is in on it."
Leah's face fell. "Does this mean we'll lose Jasper's support?"
Emmett wrapped his arm around her. "Of course not. Jasper will be angry with Alice, but he will not turn his back on us. I know he isn't in on this."
We walked down to the car and pulled it around to the front of the hotel. Emmett got out to walk inside, telling us he forgot his jacket. It didn't take long for him to return with Alice. I saw Edward and Angela exit behind them as well. The drive back was eerily quiet and I noticed Paul texting quite a bit, but I never looked to see who he was talking to. When we pulled up, the entire pack and my family were waiting outside for us.
Paul stepped out of the car and grabbed my hand. He pulled me in to his arms and kissed the top of my head softly. "I love you, Rosalie." He whispered. "Please trust me."
He walked over to the pack and whispered something to Sam.
"We're having a pack meeting with the elders in La Push. We will be back tomorrow." He told Jasper. Tomorrow? They all lived here?
I noticed that everyone phased except Paul who was running behind them as a human. I didn't know what was going on, but I knew Paul was one of the few people I could trust.
