Episode 12: The Invincible Lucky Legend
It was night time at the Kame Game Shop, with Yugi in the living room, Jounouchi in the kitchen and Sugaroku heading up the stairs to the bedrooms. "Alright Yugi," the old man said, looking at the living room to see his grandson flipping through the channels. "I'll be heading to bed, you two better not stay up too late, since you have school tomorrow."
"Don't worry Gramps, we'll be upstairs once this show is done." Yugi promised as his fingers hit the button on the remote, setting up the channel. Just before the old man could head upstairs to his room, the blond hurried to sit down on the sofa, having a bag of popcorn and two bottles of soda.
"Alright, Yuge, I got the popcorn and drinks." Jounouchi said as looked up at Sugaroku. "Hey gramps. Thanks again for letting me crash here tonight." He gave a big smile and waved at him.
Sugaroku couldn't help but grinned back, ever since Yugi explained to him about Jounouchi's living condition with his unstable father, the old man allowed him to spend a night or two at the Game Shop provided he took care of his messes and helped around as much as he could. He was Yugi's first friend he made ever since Anzu, so the least he could do was help out. Despite Jounouchi's background, he was a good kid and Sugaroku wanted to help him out as much as he could. Jounouchi looked back at the TV, setting himself up on the cushion. "Alright, it's almost time!"
Yugi looked back over at his grandfather. "Are you sure you don't want to watch this game show with us, Grandpa? It is up your ally."
"I wish I could, but I have a big day tomorrow unfortunately. Ah, to be young again and control your sleep clock." Sugaroku sighed as he day dreamed about his younger days. He looked back over at the two boys and chuckled. "I'll be heading off to bed now, let me know what happened." The old man began to trend the stairs, heading to his room. Yugi wished the three of them could have seen the show together, but he was glad that him and Jounouchi could spend time with one another.
"Alright, it's starting!" Jounouchi sounded excited, getting pumped up. The screen went dark for a moment, soon getting brighter by the many lights scattered across the board. An announcer's voice rang out in the speakers.
"Big money! It's the Game de Get show!" A man soon appeared on the stage with a white castle background. He had shining black eyes with sleek back matching colored hair. He wore a light velvet colored tux and dress pants, with a teal bow tie on his white, ruffled dress shirt. With a big smile, he held the microphone and spoke into it. "Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen! Today we are playing on the game show where we put your luck and skills to the test to win big money! Today we will be starting off with a game of luck. For our first challenge, we have the talented challenger, Naoki Sagara!" The announcer gestured to the guy on his left, where a man in a green-brown sweater wearing sunglasses was sitting on a booth that had a big red button. "And his opponent, he will be facing off against our defending champion!" He turned around to his right, gesturing to the other side of the stage where smoke could be seen obscuring someone who was being held up in a rising chair. "He has had seven consecutive wins on this show in a row. A modern legend who had been blessed by the goddess of luck herself. Give it up for Ryuichi Fuwa!"
The audience cheered, seeing the young man in the high seat. He seemed pretty young, almost a high schooler even. He had stone cold lavender eyes, with short brown hair as some strands stuck out on the front of his face. He even had on a light seafoam colored school uniform for the boys. "Woah, he's going for the big score, isn't he?!" Jounouchi said, looking at the players on the stage. Yugi had never heard of this game show until Jounouchi introduced it to him recently. Apparently it was a stage set where contestants compete in games based on luck, skill and knowledge. Sometimes they would ask questions like a quiz, other times they would end up having obstacle courses and then there were these types of games where you pressed your luck to win. Since Jounouchi liked this show and Yugi had a fondness of games, this was something they both could enjoy.
"If they're bringing him in, then this must be a game of luck." Jounouchi said.
"I wonder what kind of game they will be playing." Yugi asked as his eyes were glued to the screen.
"If the champion wins today, he will bring home 80,000 yen as his prize!" The Announcer stated into his microphone. As he said that, a large black and red roulette wheel appeared from the ceiling. "For this game, it will be electric roulette. The rules are simple, on each of the challengers stations, there is a large red button. When it is their turn, the light on the wheel will spin around the circle. You must press your button when you want the light to stop. Whoever lands on the higher number wins the match!" The announcer explained. "Now then, the challenger may go first."
On the wheel were the numbers from one to thirty six. As the match began, a small light to illuminate the panel of the number appeared, spinning round and around on the wheel so fast, it was hard to keep up. The one on the lower ground soon pressed his button, watching as the light slowed down, until it reached the number 35.
"Thirty-five! Amazing on the first try! Anyone would have little chance to beat that!" The announcer declared in a peppy tone.
"Woah, that's pretty close." Yugi commented. "How is Fuwa gonna beat that? It'll be pretty hard to get that thirty-six." Even the sunglasses guy had on a confident smile, as if he was expecting an easy win.
"Now, let's see if the champion can work a miracle! Go ahead!" The announcer declared, as the light panel went around the wheel again. Fuwa had a grin on his face, waiting for a while before he raised his finger and pressed the button on his booth. The light panel slowed down, briefly stopping at 33, then 34 then 35 until… it landed perfectly on 36. "There it is! There it is! There it is!" The announcer declared in a hyper tone. "The champion has won and secured his title! In all of humanity, how can there be such a man as lucky as he?!" The opponent hung his head low, disappointed in the loss. "Is there anyone that can put an end to this man's abilities?"
Fuwa held a smudged look as he spoke. "Only a god or someone who rivals my luck could possibly beat me. After all, no mere mortal can match up to my blessing." He winked at the announcer and the audience.
"Incredible." Yugi gasped in amazement. "He had little chance to win but he pulled it off…"
"That's Fuwa the Lucky Legend for you." Jounouchi laughed as he stuffed his face with popcorn. "No one has ever been able to defeat him in a match of luck! That guy's supernatural power is like a well that doesn't run dry."
Yugi raised a brow at Jounouchi while he sat back on the couch. "I never really liked games that relied on luck." He admitted.
"Sometimes in life, luck is all you can rely on." Jounouchi commented, taking a quick swig of his soda. He burped from the carbons in the liquid, then looked back at the screen. "Alright, let's see what challenge is up next!" Yugi turned back to the television himself, wanting to see what else was in store for this week's episode.
The next day, during school everyone was talking about the Game De Get Show from the previous night. Practically everyone was admiring the champion and how cool he was, despite the possibility of a close call he had. Fuwa, the Lucky Legend, had become a growing sensation for the public ever since he was a contestant on the show. As the gang were gathered around the classroom before the start of their first period, it was Jounouchi who brought up the episode that aired yesterday. "So, who else saw last night's episode of Game De Get Show?"
Yugi looked up at his blond friend, even though they saw it together he was still in awe. "I'll admit, the champion is pretty amazing."
"He just keeps winning no matter the odds, and his prizes get bigger and bigger." Anzu added.
Cosmo stepped up as she was still lost on the subject. "I'm confused about the mechanics of the show. How does it even work?"
Jounouchi was the one to explain everything. "The show is set up in three categories. You have the segments where the games rely on luck, such as a roulette or a guessing game. They're usually the games that take up the first part of the show. Then you have the second segment where you put two people in a quiz on a certain topic. From history, to math, to language. They have to get as many correct answers in a row before time runs out. Then the final section of the show is a giant obstacle course, where the two players have to either make it across, or get farther than their opponent to win. In each case, there are two opponents for each round, though they are all different people. If one of the opponents ends up winning that match, they take home the prize money and get to come back again to redeem themselves for a bigger prize. For example, if you have someone win in the luck part of the show, they win 10,000 yen. Then they can come back the next week, and if they win that round again, they will get 20,000 yen. The prize keeps stacking up until you get to the tenth round, where if you win ten weeks in a row, you'll get the prize of 100,000 yen!"
Yugi had never seen Jounouchi so interested in something before, aside from maybe yo-yo's and Duel Monsters. Then again, who wouldn't be happy with a prize as grand at that. With so much money on you, you would eat like royalty for so long. Afford plenty of clothing or materialistic objects. It may not have been a lot to set you for life, but it could get you far for a while.
"That's amazing!" Miho smiled, her eyes sparkling just imagining the prize money that had been won. "I wonder how much the champion himself has gotten now." She held her hands together, trying to add up the total that he won.
Her thoughts were interrupted as a hand held onto her shoulder. She turned around, seeing Honda there.
"That's no good, Miho. You shouldn't dirty yourself by falling for a guy like him. Surviving by luck is not a great way to live. You should live your life honestly and steadily, earning money bit by bit. By getting money so quickly, he will begin to think highly of himself and look down on society. That will make others hate and resent him." Honda tried to persuade Miho about the dangers of greed.
This was the moment that caught Jounouchi's attention. He grabbed a hold of Honda's collar, bringing him close as his features were that of anger. "How can you babble about nonsense like that?! We're talking about 100,000 yen here! 100,000 yen! If I had that kind of money, I would be able to finally pay back all the debt that my idiot father threw away with his gambling! With that kind of cash, I could finally run away, say goodbye to this pathetic life and start over!" The blond raised his arm in the air, as his voice had the tone of confidence and no regrets.
"Jounouchi…" Yugi said in a whisper. His eyes went wide upon hearing the desires of his best friend.
"Is your life… really like that?" Cosmo asked, leaning forward as she wanted to hear more of Jounouchi's tale.
At that moment, the blond realized he had said too much. He looked at everyone else, covering his mouth with his hands as he tried to rationalize his reasonings. "D-Damn it! I-I didn't mean all of it was bad…"
"Come to think of it, haven't you always paid for your school stuff and living expensive since you were in late elementary school?" Honda asked. Being reminded of the struggles his friend had to go through since he had been living with his father all alone.
"T-that's right. Unlike you guys, I can't be leaching from my parent's legs to get money. If you want to talk about someone who lives steadily bit by bit, then talk to me because I know what that's like!"
Honda stepped back, now understanding why Jounocuhi got triggered by the mentions of money. Even Yugi should have realized that his financial situation may not have been the steadious due to his father's drinking and gambling problem. This gave the young high schooler all the more reason to want to invite Jounouchi to his house more often. Despite growing up in such an unhealthy environment, he struggled to survive and doesn't take handouts from just anyone. Heck, he only really ate a few snacks and drinks whenever he was with Yugi, but never full meals. It also explains why Jounouchi didn't like Kaiba either, since he loathes rich kids that got everything handed to them, while he had to work at an early age just to get by.
"You really have been working your whole life?" Cosmo asked, feeling a bit guilty.
Jounouchi noticed the eyes that were upon him, he saw those looks before. The last thing he wanted though, was for everyone to feel sorry for him and try to help him. He didn't want to be seen as weak, and it wasn't like they could fix the mess that was his life. "It's not a big deal. I've lived my life this way, and I have turned out fine!" He gestured to himself.
"I don't know what your definition of fine is, but it is not that." Anzu pointed to him.
Jounouchi opened his mouth to say something, but it was Cosmo that was the one to ask. "If the situation is really bad at home, why don't you stay with another one of your family members?" She suggested.
The blond looked over at the green haired girl, taking a moment to think about her question. He casted his eyes to the floor, as he had gone quiet. They didn't even get the chance to hear his answer, for the bell began to ring, signalling everyone to hurry to their seats or class. Jounouchi went back to his chair, sitting at his desk as Cosmo left for her first period. Everyone else sat down in their assigned chairs as they waited for the teacher to come in. It didn't take too long, the door slid open as the sensei walked in with someone behind him. The students stood up, bowing to the adult in the room before sitting back down.
The old man teaching the class smiled at everyone as he stood behind his podium. "Good morning class, I trust everyone is ready for the lesson prepared today. But before we begin that, I want to introduce you to a transfer student who will be joining us today."
"A transfer student?" Everyone gasped as they began muttering to themselves. The teacher wrote the name on the chalkboard. Everyone else looked at the new student that was in front of the class, Jounouchi was the first of them to notice who it was.
Once the teacher was done writing on the board, he turned to everyone and stated his name. "This is Ryuichi Fuwa."
There he was, the legendary champion that had transferred into the class. The returning winner of the Game De Get Show who was known for his impossible stroke of luck. He was up there, looking at everyone with that smug grin on his face, as if this were normal to him. "Pleased ta' mee'cha." He greeted.
"No way…" Jounouchi muttered to Yugi.
"Hey, isn't that the Champion from that game show?" Yugi asked the blond who sat across from him on his left.
"I can't believe he's transferring to our school." Jounouchi stated. Yugi was also surprised as well. Then again, Fuwa did seem to be as old as they were. Despite him having great luck, he still had to attend school.
"I'm surprised he transferred here…" Yugi admitted. "You would have thought he'd go to a private school or be homeschooled."
Jounouchi raised a brow towards Yugi, wondering why he would think that. Then again, the blond did have to agree that he found it weird for someone that has so much money and luck to be wasting his time at a public school. Even the students were whispering amongst themselves about Fuwa being transferred.
"Yup, that's right. I'm the Champion of Legend." Fuwa admitted with his cocky accent as he looked at everyone. "Now then, just to get this out of the way, I have to say a few things. I don't give out signatures or autographs, so don't ask for them. And as for the ladies, I know that I am handsome, however, do not try to become my girlfriend. I'm not interested in school girls that are partially still kids."
Everyone else listened to what he had to say, though he was admittedly full of himself, some girls were still swooning over him. "He's even cooler in person." Miho gushed, placing her hands on her cheeks as her smile grew. Honda looked over at Miho, noticing how she had easily fallen for this guy. This caused him to glare with hatred at the champion, already deciding he didn't like him.
The teacher looked around the classroom, determining where the transfer student will be sitting. "Well then, Fuwa, your seat will be…" Before he could even state where he would sit, the Lucky Legend held up his briefcase, throwing it across the room as it landed on the empty desk on the right of Yugi. Landing on the base, on the first try as Yugi watched, impressed he will admit. The teacher, however, was not. "H-hold on a moment. I will decide where you sit…"
Fuwa would not take that tone. He turned around, facing the teacher as he smiled at the older man. "Sensei, let's decide with a game."
"W-what?" The teacher asked, but did not object to it. Yugi watched, hearing that phrase as if it reminded him of something. He wasn't sure what, as his mind was blanking on the exact reason, but in his gut he had a strange feeling.
Fuwa took out a golden yen, holding it up for the teacher to see. "I'll flip this coin, and you have to call it heads or tails once it lands on my hand. If you win, I'll let you choose the seat Sensei. But if I win, I choose where my seat will be." He didn't give the teacher time to agree to this condition. The Champion tossed the coin, flipping it in the air until it landed back to where he caught it in his palm. Then he slammed it on the back of his other hand, covering it as he waited for the teacher to say what he thought was the side. "Now, guess!" Fuwa declared.
The teacher had no time to react, so he just made a wild guess. "H-heads!"
Fuwa lifted his hand up, revealing the coin to be facing with the tails end up. "Too bad, Sensei. Looks like I won." He walked over to where his briefcase was, claiming that seat for himself. The Teacher didn't even say or do anything, he just let it happen. He did lose, and at least he tried to give him a chance. At least he chose an empty seat, and the sooner it was all settled, he could start teaching the class.
Once Fuwa was in his seat, Yugi looked over at the transfer student. Even though he was the champion of the game show, and he clearly showed no interest in the students, the least he could do was still be nice. "Nice to meet you, I'm Yugi Mutou." He introduced himself to the lucky man sitting next to him.
Fuwa looked over, his pale purple eyes looking at Yugi as he still had on that smile of confidence. "Ah, Yugi, huh? Let's get along." For a split second, a blue flash crossed the eye of the legend of luck, though Yugi thought he saw differently. Even so, he was hoping that if they couldn't be friends, they could still get along.
It was the end of the first class. The second that everyone was on break before the next period, a flock of students gathered around Fuwa. They were asking him all sorts of questions about his life on stage. Most of the group were girls, such as Miho who had asked the first question. "Hey, Fuwa? Since you appear on TV, does that mean you've met many actors and actresses?"
The brunet star looked over at Miho from his seat, answering her question. "Yeah, I've met a few. But they're all pretty dumb and shallow, so I have no interest in any of them." He admitted. Yugi was sitting at his desk, listening in as he couldn't help but be a bit interested in what he was saying. Sure, he was kind of full of himself and didn't let others make choices for him, but he didn't seem like a bad guy. At least, Yugi thought he didn't seem bad.
"But still, you've really made a name for yourself." One of the male students stated.
"At the rate that you're going, you're bound to get that 100,000 yen prize!" Another female student pointed out.
"So how much have you received from the show so far?" Miho asked.
"I don't keep track of how much I make. I tend to spend the money immediately after I get it anyways. I'm not worried about it running out, I can always just get more." Fuwa raised his arms in the air, no care at all as he gave his answers.
Miho seemed fairly impressed, smiling as she was gushing over his answers. "So cool. You're really cool, Fuwa!"
While Miho had fallen completely for the Lucky Legend, Honda, Jounouchi and Anzu were in the back of the class observing. Yugi could hear them since he was kind of close. Jounouchi sat on top of Honda's desk, arms crossed as he glanced over at the idol. Anzu seemed somewhat interested in the young man, but didn't seem to want to engage in conversation. Honda was the one to show his true colors. "Sweet Miho… what could she see in a guy like him?"
Anzu looked at the burnet friend of the group. "You really want to hit him from behind, huh?" She asked.
Though he didn't respond to that question, he looked over to the blond that was sitting on his desk. Honda used his elbow to nudge at Jounouchi's back. "Aren't you going to say something, Jounouchi?" The blond's brown eyes only stared at the man, his lip was silent though. Yugi found it strange how quiet Jounouchi was being. He was the type of guy to say what was bothering him out right, he rarely kept any secrets unless they were extremely personal. Despite that glare that the blond was giving to Fuwa, he wasn't saying anything in regards to his true feelings. Was he just holding it back because he would have gone off against the idol and not be able to control himself? Or was there something more that not even Yugi knew?
"Um… actually, I was thinking of trying out for that show." One of the male students advanced towards Fuwa. "I've been applying every day. If you could, can you tell me how you have so much luck and what's your secret to winning?"
Fuwa scoffed, he grinned his signature expression as he answered. "Do ya know why lions are strong? It's because lions are born as lions, natural predators in the animal kingdom. Humans are the same way, some are born with luck and talent, some aren't. There's no method for winning a game of luck, it's all up to fate to decide. If the odds are in your favor, you win. If they aren't, you just got to move on."
It was a weird piece of advice, but one Yugi couldn't disagree on. Some games, while they do require skill and knowledge, there are those that require luck as an element for a clear shot of winning. The best example that Yugi could think of was Duel Monsters. You need to understand the basics of how to play and you also need to be skilled in creating strategies with the cards you have. However, luck is needed in the same cases. If you are in a situation where you need to have a good card to turn the tables, you would have to rely on fortune in order to draw the right card at the right moment. To go your entire life based on luck alone, wasn't something Yugi could get behind. At the same time though, he also believed that fate could have a part to play in what happens in your life. After all, some things were just out of your control.
The door to the classroom slid open, revealing a male student, gasping for breath. "Hey! Big trouble everyone! We have a pop quiz in the next class!"
The students gasped in disbelief. One of the others mocked the teacher for her timing. The math teacher was known to give out pop quizzes at least once a week, and each one counted as a third of their grades. She took her job as an educator in equations seriously. The students began taking out their math books, going over the contents of the chapter they had learned and are currently learning. There was less than five minutes before they would have to go to the next class, and chances are the quiz would be the first thing they would have to do.
Yugi sighed in gloom, as he himself held up the math book but lacked the motivation to open it. "Oh man… even if I study now, there's no way I'll remember it all." He placed his book on the desk, staring at it without any effort to even try. He would have just taken the bad grade without any complaints, but someone else wanted to give him a chance. Yugi looked over, seeing Fuwa open the textbook to a random page, one involving parabolas and graphing equations.
"Here. If ya study just this, you'll be able to pass." Fuwa assured, giving a thumbs up to Yugi before heading back to his seat. Yugi looked at the random pages that he had given him to look over. He was kind of hesitant to really do any studying, especially since Fuwa was new and would have no idea what they were even learning about. But at the same time, he could give it a try. After all, he was aware of his luck and he had never been wrong before. Plus, worse case Yugi just got a bad grade anyways, and he would just have to work as hard to get a passing mark in that class. So, for the next four minutes, he looked over those two pages. He memorized all he could until the final bell rang out.
The brunette teacher came into the class, holding a bunch of papers in her arms. She was an older teacher, wearing thin glasses and having her hair up in a high bun. "Good morning, class." She said in a cheery tone. "Before we begin our lesson today, we have a pop quiz. Take one sheet and pass it along to the back." She instructed, handing a few stacks at a time to the front of the row. The students in the front took one, then passed the other papers behind them to the next person. Once everyone got their quiz, the teacher stood up to the desk and watched. "Have all the quiz forms been passed out to everyone?" They all replied with yes, picking up their pencil and starting with the questions they could answer. "You have twenty minutes, then I will collect the forms and we can begin the next lesson." The instructor told the class, as she sat down in her chair while planning the lecture.
Yugi took a look at his quiz, checking over the questions. Thankfully, the teacher was kind enough to only have there be one sheet, each side holding seven questions. As his eyes glanced over the paper, he realized how similar these questions were from the two pages that he studied over. Actually, as Yugi looked closer, he saw that the questions being asked were the ones that needed the same formula that he knew! 'No way…' He thought to himself as he looked over the questions. 'Fuwa was able to nail it! Even though he didn't know what we were learning, he managed to get the section to pass this quiz right away. His luck really is as amazing as they say.' Now Yugi was truly impressed. Clearly this man had a lot to live up to, but he did not seem to mind the pressure. His very next actions proved that.
Fuwa gave a sly smirk as he shrugged his arms, right before he stood up from his seat and walked to the teacher's desk with the quiz. Yugi watched Fuwa go, wondering if he was already done with the quiz. Though now that he thought about it, he didn't even pick up a pencil to the paper. Jounouchi also raised his head up to look at what the legend was doing. The young man handed the paper to the teacher, placing it on her desk for her to pick up. She did, looking over what he turned in. Her face scrunched up in disappointment. "Hey, hold on a moment! What's the meaning of this! You didn't answer a single question." The teacher raised her voice, holding the quiz tightly to the point she was making wrinkles in the paper.
Fuwa looked back at the teacher, still grinning. "That's right. I'm fine with getting a zero. One measly test won't change my life, never has and never will." He waved his hand at her, showing off his discontent with the quiz.
"W-what is the meaning of this attitude?" She demanded an answer, getting visibly upset.
"Well, I supposed you would be one of those people that don't get it. Those that are chosen, will have a special life to lead, there's all to it." Fuwa answered, heading to the door to make his exit.
"Don't walk out on me!" She yelled, demanding him to come back.
Fuwa opened the door, then looked over at her one more time as he smiled. "Oh, by the way. I recommend you smile more. Your wrinkles are showing through your makeup." That was what Fuwa said before closing the door, leaving the class. The teacher was in such shock by his words, she just stood there as her eyes began to twitch. Her hands were starting to turn into fists, her anger was starting to show.
"Class, this is now an open book quiz! Use whatever resources you want, then after that, complete the problems from chapters 7 and 8 for your homework!" She ordered, before storming off out of the room and leaving the students on their own.
"Woah, and I thought Chouno was the only teacher that cared about her appearance." One of the students whispered to their neighbors.
"Every woman is the same, no matter the age." The other said back.
Yugi could only stare at the door, still reeling from what Fuwa had said and how he acted. Even though he was lucky and seemed to be kind of friendly, he didn't have the best personality.
The rest of the school day went smoothly, for the most part. Fuwa showed up in the other classes, though he had little to no other interactions with Yugi and the gang. There weren't any other surprises in store for the other classes, so it was a surprisingly chilled day. After the final period, everyone decided to spend some time together, since they hadn't in a while with everything that had happened. It was Yugi's idea, figuring the two could go out and get an afterschool snack or go somewhere else. Jounouchi, Honda, Anzu and Miho agreed to that idea. He did invite Cosmo, but she said that she had to take a few shifts at the flower shop the next few days, so she would be busy.
"You really can't come hang out with us?" Yugi asked her, a bit disappointed in her answer.
The green haired girl had her backpack on, adjusting the straps. "I'd like to go out with you guys, but my sister is going to be busy with her internship these next few weeks. So someone needs to tend to the store, especially when we only have five staff members, including me and my sister."
Even though Yugi wanted her to come along with them, he understood that it was a family emergency. There were some times he couldn't hang out with his friends because he had to watch over the shop while his grandfather had to run some errands. So in a way, he understood. "How is your sister doing?" He asked. Yugi was the only one to really see Cosmo's relative, the others only heard about her. He still could remember those harsh eyes and her attitude that worked in getting what she wanted.
Cosmo gave a warm smile. "She's doing very well, in fact she isn't even nervous. She has such confidence in herself, I'm sure she will be great!" Those sapphire eyes lit up for Cosmo, clearly she thought highly of her bigger sister. At least she was being supportive for her older sibling, and tending to the flowers in the shop was something Cosmo loved to do anyways. Yugi promised that he would stop by to check on her every now and again to see how she was fairing. The flower girl agreed that once she had a day off, she would let everyone know and try to hang out with them.
So, it seemed like it would be the five musketeers for the day. That was until they were out of the building, and heard a voice calling to them. "Yo! Everyone!" Yugi and the others turned in the direction where they heard that person. There was Fuwa, who walked over as he held his bookbag in his hand.
"Fuwa!" Miho gasped, seeing him there. He approached the group, still spreading his smile upon his face.
"That was some stunt you pulled in class there," Anzu stated as she looked at him.
"Yeah, well I was never one for academics anyways." Fuwa admitted. "I only transferred to this school because my old man wanted me to. Said it would teach me how people acted without luck." Yugi wasn't sure if he was seeing things, but when the idol explained his situation, he was staring directly at him.
"So," Miho smiled, as she got closer to Fuwa. "Did you want to hang out with us? We were thinking of going somewhere to spend some time together." Miho only wanted him to come along just to spend more time with him. She had a new fascination with him, and it made Honda all the more jealous.
"Miho, we shouldn't invite someone with us without everyone's say." The brunet tried to tell her. "Besides, he must be busy." Honda added, with a hint of a threat in his voice. Anzu and Yugi were indifferent to what Fuwa's answer would be. Jounouchi just stared, being quiet like he was in class.
"Actually, I don't mind." That answer from the Lucky Legend surprised everyone else. He had on his smile as he continued with his words. "I'm supposed to meet up with the man later on, but I have some time to kill. Plus, it would be rude to decline an offer." He clearly seemed interested in coming along. Despite appearing as a loner, it seemed that he was willing to go along with the group just to make time go faster. Miho seemed ecstatic, while Anzu, Yugi and even Jounouchi went along with it. Honda was the only one that was visibly upset. Regardless, they let Fuwa tag along, figuring it would be a good chance to get to know him better. With the six of them, they walked out of the school grounds and spent their time walking around. They didn't really have a destination at first, but they agreed to head to the east of Domino. Though it was seen as the most fancy of the city, they figured it would be right up Fuwa's ally. They weren't expecting to go shopping or sit down anywhere, it was mostly just for them to chat about themselves.
Fuwa didn't seem interested in making small talk though, yet that didn't stop Miho as she tried to advance to him. She reached down, holding onto his hand that he was using to carry his briefcase. As he felt her hand on his, he looked over at the lavender haired girl with a bit of annoyance. "Say, Fuwa! Did you know that Miho is a Virgo? What kind of sign are you? I bet we might be pretty compatible." Miho kept running her mouth, dominating the conversation.
Yugi was standing next to Fuwa as they walked, while Jounouchi was behind him and Miho, then Honda and Anzu bringing up the rear of the group. The one to show off the most hatred was Honda, who didn't keep his glare off of Miho and Fuwa. He was beyond jealous, more like enraged as he saw how much he was seducing Miho. Even though he mentioned before that he had no interest in school girls, and it was her that was coming onto him. 'Fuwa, that bastard! How dare he seduce Miho like this?' Honda thought to himself. If looks could kill, Honda had a face that was ready to beat up somebody. He wasn't the only one though, as Honda realized the blond was staring at Fuwa for a long while now. Ever since he was introduced in the class as the new transfer student. But he didn't say anything, he was keeping all of his emotions in. Though Honda and Yugi were both aware of how much he was scowling at the Lucky Legend. Honda believed that at one point that bottle of emotions would break, he would let loose. Fuwa had better watch his back when that happens, because Jounouchi was not one to show mercy.
Speaking of, despite Fuwa trying to show no interest in Miho, she was still dotting on him. He even tried moving away from her, but she didn't take that as a sign. Instead, she reached out for him again. Fuwa had to admit, it was a bit disturbing how much this young girl was trying to get with him. 'Why is this girl so attached to me? I'm used to fans and even stalkers, but this chick takes it to a whole new level.' Fuwa thought to himself, being a bit exhausted just keeping her away. 'If it wasn't for the fact that Yugi was part of this group, I wouldn't have agreed to come along.' He needed to find some sort of distraction until it was time for him to head back. He looked up and saw a building that was right in front of him, getting an idea. Before Miho could reach for his hand again, he quickly slid over in front of Miho, who appeared confused. "Ya guys hungry? I recommend we eat here, I'll treat ya." He then getsured behind him, showing off a restaurant that was Chinese themed with a golden dragon plastered on the front, and even red and white painting on the outside.
Everyone looked up at the restaurant and a few of their stomachs did start to growl just by looking at the outside. "I heard about this restaurant!" Miho squealed as she had a huge smile on her face. "The food here is delicious!"
"Yeah but… isn't this place really expensive?" Yugi asked. "Are you sure you want to treat us here?" He did feel bad for wanting Fuwa to spend so much money on them, especially when they were still considered strangers.
"Seems ya still don't know a thing 'bout me." Fuwa laughed, turning and heading into the restaurant. Everyone else seemed to have little choice but to follow him behind. They walked right in, Fuwa being the first. The second he opened the doors and was standing in the lobby, a man with facial hair wearing a green kimono rang a gong. At the same time, a red decoration ball opened up from above, spilling out streamers and confetti and landing on Fuwa himself.
The man in the kimono came over, greeting Fuwa as he had a very peppy voice. "Congratulations, sir. You are officially the 10,000th customer that has entered since the opening of this restaurant. Any food and drinks that you order today will be for free!" The owner promised.
Everyone was shocked upon hearing this news. They were impressed with the luck that was on Fuwa's side. He turned back, seeing everyone's expression while he was none the wiser. "Dis is pretty normal for me." He assured the gang.
"So cool!" Miho squealed again, being overly amazed by his luck. Fuwa turned back, now having the expression of pure confusion. This guy could do anything and she would still find it impressing. Regardless, he ordered a table for six, being told to give them the best food they could get. Once seated, waiters gave them their silverware and drinks. It took some time to set up, but eventually their table was served with refillable drinks and baskets of foods.
"Go on ahead, Don't hold anything back, eat as much as you like. More food is coming after all." Fuwa assured.
Miho giggled, picking up her chopsticks and being grateful to the meal before she started to dig in. Anzu also thanked Fuwa for the meal, while Yugi started eating right away. The food was even better than they could have imagined. They couldn't believe that they were eating it all for practically nothing! Fuwa may have been full of himself, but he seemed to be generous to those he liked. They couldn't say he was a bad guy, he seemed pretty decent. Honda still had his eyes on him judgingly, but at the same time his mouth was enjoying the meal. Just as he was about to stuff a piece of some greens in his face, the brunet turned to look over at Jounouchi, who was staring at Fuwa this whole time. At the moment, the Lucky Legend was taking a drink, relishing in the food. Honda smiled slightly over at the blond, knowing that his pent up feelings wouldn't last much longer. 'That's right, Jounouchi. Punch out this arrogant bastard and hold nothing back!' Honda hoped it would be soon. He was ecstatic to see, as he devoured his plate ravishly.
After the lunch, the group began walking further into the district. Yugi stretched out his arms, happy with a full belly. "That was amazing! Thanks again, Fuwa." Yugi looked up at the idol.
"Don't worry 'bout it. It's the least I could do as thanks fer letting me tag along." Fuwa assured, being sort of humble for a change. As they were walking down some smaller shops, they heard a commotion coming from one of the nearby stalls. A bunch of people were gathered, trying to get one of the top prizes from a bingo wheel. Some people were complaining that they didn't get the top prize, while others questioned if the golden ball was even in there.
"Woah, looks like a bingo prize!" Honda noted.
Miho looked back at everyone, holding up a few tickets. "Hey, how about we give it a try? We get three chances, so we are bound to at least get a good prize."
Anzu agreed, seeing as how they had a lucky charm of their own, Fuwa, it couldn't hurt to give it a go. "I think we could give it a try."
The Lucky Legend looked over at Yugi, an idea forming in his head. "Alright, Yugi. How about we have a challenge, then?" Fuwa suggested.
Yugi looked up at Fuwa, taken aback. "A challenge?" He repeated.
"Here are the rules, they're pretty easy to follow. We'll compete for the top prize, whoever gets it is the winner. The loser will then have to do whatever the winner tells them to do. What you say?" His eyes changed from a soft hue to a challenging glare. He was clearly in a gaming mood, and he wanted to win. Yugi was a bit hesitant to agree, but he figured it was the least he could do for the great meal he gave to them. Plus, it was only a game after all, and that was something Yugi could never back down from. Even if he lost, which he was certain he would, he doubted that Fuwa had any malicious intentions behind his winnings.
"A-Alright…" He reluctantly agreed. Yugi was to go first, grabbing onto the handle and turning the wheel around. He looked at the pan to see what kind of prize he would get based on the color of the ball. He turned it round and round until finally, a small ball rolled into the pan. It was a basic white one. Anzu was even cheering for Yugi, only for him to not even get the top three prizes.
"Oh, too bad." The stall owner said, handing Yugi a tissue for a composition prize. He looked at the handkerchief for a moment, a bit saddened that he didn't win, though he really didn't expect himself to.
"Alright, my turn." Fuwa stepped forward, gently pushing Yugi aside as he was the one to grab the handle of the wheel and spin it. After a few turns, a golden ball landed in the pan, causing the owner and even the crowd to cheer in pure enjoyment.
"There it is!" The store owner rang his bell, smiling as he declared Fuwa the winner. "Congratulations! Your grand prize is an all paid trip to Italy!"
"Italy?!" Miho gasped, growing all the more pleased. "Lucky!" Yugi looked over at Fuwa, who had won fair and square based on luck alone. Even Jounouchi's eyes were wavering from the scene that just took place.
The Lucky Legend held up his ticket prize, looking over at his opponent. "Looks like I won, Yugi."
The short boy only laughed, rubbing the back of his head as he was being humble. "I may have lost, but I had no doubts that you would have beaten me, Fuwa."
"I can't believe that such a person like you exists, Fuwa!" Miho gushed as she was in her daydream mode. Fuwa looked over at Miho, still uncomfortable about her infatuation with him. Luck was once again on his side as his phone rang, hoping it was the person he had to see. He took out his cellphone, seeing a message be sent to him.
"Oh, looks like I got to go. The big guy is wanting to see me." Fuwa smiled, putting his device back in his pocket. "Yugi, don't forget about our bet. I'll think about what I want from you later." Fuwa promised. Yugi nodded, since that was all he could do.
Jounouchi, who had been behind the Lucky Legend himself, watched his interactions. "No! I can't hold back anymore!" Jounouchi said to himself.
Honda looked over, seeing the blond going over to stand in front of Fuwa. This was it, he realized. This was his breaking point, and things were going to go down. 'That's it Jounouchi! Go at it!'
"Fuwa!" Jounouchi looked him dead in the eyes, his expression was hardened while the brunet raised a brow, still having that cocky smile on himself. Anzu and Miho watched in anticipation, fearing the worst, all the while Yugi had a bad feeling that Jounouchi would turn this physical. "Listen…" He began to speak, ready to share his piece of mind. Honda watched, a satisfying grin on his face. He wanted his friend to knock Fuwa out like how he usually does. He wanted Jounouchi's fists to make contact with his face, to give this Lucky Legend what for! Instead, the blond got on his hands and knees, bowing down in respect towards Fuwa. "Please! I beg of you! Take me as your student!" Everyone gasped, not seeing such an event coming. Even Honda was baffled by how out of character the blond was being. "I also want to have luck like you to get by in life! Please show me your secret!"
Honda facepalmed himself mentally and physically. He couldn't believe it. This whole time, he thought that Jounouchi had been scowling at Fuwa, but instead he was actually admiring the guy! The one time he actually wanted Jounouchi to let loose and get himself dirty, he failed to deliver. Why was fate so cruel?
Fuwa also didn't take it lightly, laughing at Jounouchi to the point he had tears in his eyes. "Are ya dumb or something? I told ya before, ya either born strong or you ain't. That's how life works. I got nothing to teach ya, and even if I did, I don't wanna waste my time being a teacher, not for me. Luck ain't a skill you can harbor, it's something that blesses you the day ya born. Nothing many can do 'bout it." Fuwa turned back to everyone else. "Anyways, sorry to leave ya guys hanging, but the big guy is calling. Later." Fuwa waved his hand up, heading away from the group on his own.
Jounouchi looked up from where he was kneeling, seeing Fuwa going away. He grunted, feeling ashamed for begging for no reason. He placed his head back on the ground, embarrassed. "Damn it!"
"Well, it's like he said. Luck isn't something you can learn." Anzu pointed out, trying to cheer him up slightly. Yugi watched Fuwa leave, until he could no longer see him. He wondered if what he said about inheriting luck was true, Fuwa seemed to believe so and based on his actions and his fortune, he could see where he was coming from. But… Did that make him a not so good guy?
It was during this time that a certain CEO of one of the biggest gaming companies in the country was filling out some paperwork. He had called for a meeting with one of his trusted allies, but so far he hadn't shown up. So, he was just taking the time to get some work done. He had sent him a message well over an hour ago, yet heard nothing back. After about an hour and a half later, a buzzing sound came from the intercom. "Master Kaiba, your second Game Master has finally arrived."
Seto pressed the button, responding to the call. "Send him up here, he has kept me waiting long enough." The CEO was waiting for the second Game Master that he had called in to test Yugi and his gaming persona. He wanted to hear how things had been going between the two. After all, he had to figure out how long he was going to keep toying with Yugi before he finally got to have his match with him. Eventually, the doors to his office opened, revealing the second of the four Game Masters. Seto spread a smile on his lips, seeing the young man approach his desk. "Welcome back, Ryuichi Fuwa."
Fuwa chuckled, raising a brow. "I figured ya wanted to talk with me about the progress?"
Seto nodded. "I know it has only been one day, but I am curious to see what your thoughts are."
Fuwa shrugged. "I was feelin' like talkin' to ya as well 'bout that." He admitted, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked down at the carpet. "I did as you said without any question. Transferring to Domino High was a breeze thanks to your help. But I have to ask…" He turned back to face Seto with some annoyance in his eyes. "Just what's the big deal with this Yugi Mutou guy? Why did you call me to fight such a wimpy kid?"
"Do not be fooled by his innocent features." Seto warned. "He may appear naive and inexperienced, but he has another face. Until you know his true form, you won't be able to properly challenge him."
"Eh, whatever. But remember, ya know I possess a rare amount of luck. Do ya understand what that means?" Fuwa jumped from the desk, heading over to one of the walls, where there was a revolver with some bullets hanging up in a panel that was password protected. Fuwa didn't even look at the keypad as he punched in the five digit code, and on the first try, the glass slid up to free the weapon and ammo. Kaibe watched him, his stare was blank but on the inside he was impressed with how easily he was able to crack that code without even knowing it. Fuwa held up the gun, proudly as if he had acquired a toy. He took five bullets, placing them in most of the slots. "Five bullets in six of the slots…" Once he filled most of the gun up, he spun the cartage roll and pointed the barrel right at his head. "I bet that if I fire this thing… it won't hurt a bit." He assured in a cocky tone. Kaiba watched, wondering if his luck would protect him as it usually does. Fuwa pulled the trigger, and as he expected, no bullet came out. The smile on the Lucky Legend grew, as Kaiba was fascinated with his charm.
Fuwa placed the gun back on Kaiba's desk. "Look Kaiba, I'm getting bored with this facade. Not that I got anything against the squirt, but I came here with the promise of a life or death duel!"
Kaiba returned back a smile, knowing full well what Fuwa was truly after: adrenaline. "You can have such a duel if you bring the other Yugi out. If you even like, we can help you set up an organized location, granted if it is within our standards. As long as you don't go too violent, you are free to do whatever you want."
Fuwa had to admit, it did seem like an interesting change of pace. As much as he doubted Kaiba's words, he could at least have his own fun. "Any organized location? Alright, I have an idea. But give me time to figure out what game I want it based off of. May take me a day or two to decide."
Kaiba nodded. "Take as much time as you like, but do hurry up as well. After all, I'm curious to see how your battle will go."
Fuwa let out a slight chuckle. He walked out of the office, closing the door and made his way down the hallway. As he was a few turns away from Kaiba's office, his phone went off again. Fuwa grabbed it from his pocket, seeing the caller ID. When he knew who it was, he picked it up and answered. "Eh? Been a while since ya called. Were ya getting bored and wanted to hear my voice?"
"Oh hush you!" A female voice mocked him on the other end. "I got done with some shoots early, and wanted to check up on you. I heard that you got summoned by Master Kaiba."
Fuwa stretched out his arms as he kept talking to the woman on the phone. "Yeah, he ordered me to follow this wimpy guy he seems to have a thing for. Kind of annoying to be honest. Both the boss and the kid, in da order."
"Well then don't take the job if it bothers you that much. You know we can always say no to him, we aren't obligated to take on every offer he gives us." She reminded him.
"Nah, as much as I don't want to, I have been craving a good challenge as of late. Kaiba said that this boy would give it to me, but I have my doubts. Still, I just got to test his skills and put on a show for the boss, that's all he wants to see."
"Is this guy really worth it?" Even the woman on the phone sounded just as doubtful as him.
"I heard that he was able to defeat the first Game Master, so he must have some skills. But skills won't beat me and my luck. Though I heard he becomes different when he gets challenged to games, so I'm gonna put it to da test!"
"Whatever, I swear, Kaiba seems to underestimate us at this point. Using our skills on some kid? Just what is he thinking?"
Fuwa gave a shrug. "Well, it isn't our place to question him. He hired us as his four horsemen of games to ensure anyone that messes with him gets punished. Still think he's underestimating my luck, but I'll humor him if it means I can get myself a life or death duel! In fact, how about we make this a bet."
"Oh?" The woman had a slight hint of slyness in her tone. "Tell me more of this bet."
Fuwa smiled, able to get her attention. "If I manage to be the one to beat this kid, then you have to accompany me to Italy."
She laughed in the background. "Are you asking me out on a date? You know I'm older than you."
"Only by two years." Fuwa pointed out. "And if I lose, I'll agree to go on a shopping spree with you."
"You must be confident." The woman noted. "Alright, I accept this bet. Though you seem certain you will win."
Fuwa laughed. "Have ya met me? They don't call me the Lucky Legend for nothin'."
"Call your good fortune what you will, but eventually it will run out. When that happens, I'll take over as the third Game Master to succeed where you fail."
Fuwa made his way to the elevator of the floor, waiting for the doors to open. "That's what I like about you, Aileen… you don't get turned on cause of my luck." He soon entered the elevator, hitting a button to get him to the floor he needed to be. He knew he would win this bet, he hasn't lost once and he wasn't planning on losing anytime soon.
For the next few days, things seemed to have been really quiet. Fuwa didn't show up at school, and many of his fans were quite disappointed. Though it may have been for the best, as Jounouchi was still fairly upset about the guy not taking him on as his student. Honda seemed happy that the blond finally came back to his senses, but Yugi couldn't say that he was a bad guy. Even Miho and Anzu were grateful to him for letting them eat out. Jounouchi didn't buy it, he was even slightly frustrated that they were defending him.
As of now, Yugi was watching over the Game Shop after school. Tonight was supposed to be the next episode of Game De Get Show, and while he was excited to see what events would play out, Jounouchi was somewhat indifferent to the show. The blond was there, helping out with sorting and cleaning around the shop to make up for him being there more frequently. As he said before, he had to work to get to where he was, and this was no expectation. The blond was currently sweeping the floor, cleaning up any dirt and trash that was there.
"Hey, Jounouchi. Do you want to take a break? I think you already cleaned up the floor enough to remove the tiles." Yugi stated, seeing how aggressive his friend was being with the broom. Jounouchi gave a grunt before leaving the broom against the wall.
"Yeah… kind of been slow, huh?" He asked his friend.
Yugi smiled. "Yeah, but we have our busy days as well." He assured, checking over the cash in the register before he would go and fix the two up something to drink. Just as he was about to finish, the door to the shop swung open. Yugi and Jounouchi looked over, wondering if it was Sugaroku who came back. Instead, it was a tall woman walking in, going over to the counter. "Ah! Sparkle!" Yugi gasped, seeing her walk over to where he was.
"Long time no see, boys." The purple haired girl smiled as she greeted them. "I saw the sign was still open, and came in."
"That's usually how a business works, ain't it?" Jounouchi mocked. Sparkle raised a brow his way, but ignored him as she looked at the one behind the counter.
"So, what can I get you today?" Yugi asked, wondering what kind of game Sparkle wanted to buy.
"Do you have any Duel Monster packs left?" Sparkle asked.
Yugi looked around, scratching his cheek as he gave a weak smile. "Sorry, it looks like we're all sold out. But I think we're going to get some more next week." He assured.
"Then I'll keep coming back until I can get some." Sparkle said.
"Ya into Duel Monsters yourself, Sparks?" Jounouchi asked.
She turned her head to meet his gaze, giving a smile. "I played a few rounds back in America when it was becoming a hit. I kind of stopped playing it for a while, but after seeing you guys go at it in school, I thought I'd give it a chance." She explained. "Plus, I heard some rumors that the creator of Duel Monsters will be hosting a Japanese tournament here this fall. I thought it would be fun to enter, so I'm trying to rebuild a new deck."
"A Duel Monsters tournament in Japan?" Yugi blinked, wondering if that were true. If so, part of him would like to attend and even try his hand at it.
"Yeah, but they are just rumors. Still, if it is true, we should be hearing some word about it soon." Sparkle assured. "So, what has been going on with you guys? Haven't seen you around lately, anything new and exciting?"
Yugi and Jounouchi looked at one another, as the smallest of the two came out from behind the counter. He gestured for the two of them to head into the kitchen with him, where he began to get them some cold lemonade. All the while, Jounouchi and Yugi explained to Sparkle about Ryuichi Fuwa that had transferred to Domino High and had taken an interest in Yugi. "So, the Lucky Legend came to school and is now buddies with you?" Sparkle asked, as she sat across from Jounouchi who was at the table.
"He ain't our buddy, he just wormed his way into our group." Jounouchi corrected.
Sparkle raised her brow as she had a sly smile on her face. "Are you just saying that because of your bias towards him due to the fact he wouldn't let you in on his good luck secret?" Jounouchi gave a harsh glare her way, but kept silent since he couldn't deny the truth. Yugi finally came over, placing three cuts of the drinks on the table. Once he did that, he took a seat in between them. Sparkle still had much to say, giving a sigh as she swirled the straw in her lemonade. "I don't get why you would want to associate yourself with him. He may not be a bad person, but he's not a good guy either."
Yugi looked over in her direction. "But, Fuwa seems like a pretty decent guy. I know he can be kind of cocky and full of himself, but he took an interest in hanging around us and even treated us to lunch." Yugi tried to point out.
Sparkle took a sip of her drink before speaking again. "All I'm saying is that you shouldn't easily trust people just because they want to get to know you. No offense, but you don't have the best track record of people who want to be with you just to be friends. Remember Seto Kaiba?" Yugi's eyes went wide upon that name, being reminded of what he did.
Jounouchi grunted. "Just hearing his name gives me a headache. But, you got a point there."
Sparkle leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms over her chest. "I may not know this Fuwa guy on a personal level, but I know his type. He's the kind of guy that relies solely on luck because he believes he's blessed with it. He uses that to his advantage and to dissuade his opponents into believing that they stand no chance. He uses his fortune as a way to intimidate people. I dunno if it is some sort of strange force that protects him, or some sort of trick he uses. Still, I don't know if he cares about himself and is willing to do whatever he wants for fun. Or if he does have some standards and morals. But I can tell he is not interested in making friends."
Jounouchi and Yugi remained quiet, Sparkle sure seemed to have made a profile of the guy. She wasn't wrong on some of the details, they had to admit. "I don't believe in living life based on luck." Sparkle added. "You want to get by in life, you have to work hard, overcome your obstacles. Those that are blessed have no idea how harsh the real world is. Besides, luck doesn't always change things. Luck doesn't always influence the world, and luck doesn't always protect you."
"Well, I mean, there are probably some times when you need luck. Like when you are in the middle of a duel and you have a bad hand, so you need some luck to draw the right card at the right time for a turn… around…" Yugi tried to make his analogy, but the eyes fell onto him and he began to lose track on what he was saying. He only gave a soft chuckle. "Uh… forget I said anything."
"I don't necessarily disagree with you." Jounouchi told Sparkle. "But still, one can at least dream of living the high life."
"I never said you couldn't dream of such a life, I'm saying that getting a life like that through sheer luck is near to impossible." Sparkle corrected. Yugi and Jounouchi looked back at one another, letting her words sink into them. Sparkle seemed to have more she wanted to say, but the group was interrupted by Sugaroku who came into the kitchen.
"Ah, Yugi. You're up here?" The old man asked as he came into the room with some envelopes in his hand.
Yugi turned, seeing his guardian enter the room. "Oh, hey gramps. Jounouchi and I were on a break. Sparkle came in for some Duel Monsters cards, and we were just chatting up here." He explained.
"Duel Monsters?" Sugaroku repeated, looking over at the girl.
She gave a curt nod. "I wanted to build up a new deck. Preferably with warrior types."
The old man gave a hum. "Well, we did sell out yesterday. But I can check in the back to see if there is anything." He promised. Sparkle gave a respective bow, thanking the store owner. "Oh, by the way Yugi, you got a letter." The old man went over, giving one of the envelopes to his grandson before heading down to check the storage.
Yugi held onto the letter for a while, looking it over as he was confused. Who could send him a letter? He didn't have any pen pals and most of his friends would just talk to him face to face. Jounouchi and Sparkle were also nervous about the origins of the envelope. He opened it, bringing out the letter that was contained in it. "So, what is it Yugi?" Jounouchi asked, his curiosity getting the better of him. There were two pieces of papers in the small seal. The first one was a recommendation application, as well as two tickets. The other was a handwritten message.
Yugi began to read it outloud. "Yugi, I figured out what to do for my win from our last bet. It seems like another challenge, but I am curious to see how well you handle me on the stage. It took a few strings to pull, but I made it so you would be my opponent for this week's episode of Game De Get Show. I even made it so you can take one person with you. Would have invited everyone else, but figured the less people that saw your defeat, the easier it would be. Fill out the paperwork, and hand it at the station. Can't wait to see you there, Ryuichi Fuwa."
"Eh?!" Jounouchi gasped, hearing the letter addressed to him. "No way! You get to be on the game show?!"
"Isn't that tonight though?" Sparkle asked. "Seems a little short on notice."
"Why would Fuwa want to face me in the Game Show?" Yugi wondered. "He's going to win regardless."
Sparkle crossed her arms over her chest, looking at the paper. "Yeah, it seems even he knows he will win. Still, he seems to want you on the show."
"Yugi!" The blond looked over at his friend. "Please let me go with you to the game show!" Yugi and Sparkle looked up at him, wondering what he was up to. "Please! It has always been my dream to be on the set! And if possible, there is another request…" Yugi blinked, but he decided to hear him out.
It took a bit to fill out the paperwork, and to even travel to the studio. Once they were there, they waited in a certain room until the start of the show. It would still be over an hour until the start of the first round, with the luck based games. Jounouchi was pacing back and forth in the room, trying to prepare himself mentally for the challenge ahead, while Yugi watched from the couch. "Jounouchi… are you sure about this?"
The blond looked back over at him. "This is my choice, Yugi! I want to upstage that Fuwa bastard and show him what for! Plus, if I win, I can use the money to pay back all of my father's stupid debt! I won't let you go through such a thing, as your best friend it is my job to protect you!" Yugi still didn't trust this, but he remained silent for the time being. He just hoped that this would be acceptable.
A knock soon came from the door, as a stage manager came in. "Excuse me, we are ready. If the contestant would follow me. As for the one wanting to watch, wait here for a moment and someone will lead you to your seat." Yugi and Jounouchi looked over at one another again. Then, the blond walked over to the manager and followed him out of the room. Yugi remained there, his guts telling him something was off. He stayed in the room a bit longer, wondering how soon it would be until he could head to his seat. The door opened again, causing Yugi to hop up from where he was sitting. Instead of a manager, he was met with the Lucky Legend himself.
"Fuwa?" Yugi looked at the brunet who came into the room.
"Glad to see you made it. I see they gave you the common room, but you are gonna be a one off guy anyways, so not too surprising." He looked around the room.
"W-why are you here? I thought you would be on stage." Yugi said.
Fuwa laughed. "Relax, the stage ain't too far 'way from here. 'Sides, I know where I'm going, and I wanted to talk to ya about this. I made it clear in the invite that I wanted you to be my opponent." Yugi had a feeling that that was what Fuwa was going to address.
"Are you mad?" Yugi asked, feeling guilty for what he agreed to with Jounouchi.
Fuwa gave a shrug. "It doesn't matter who my opponent is, I'll beat them no matter. Though, I figured I'd give ya a warning." Yugi looked up at the idol, tilting his head as he wondered about this warning. Was it a threat, or something else? "This game will be different from the others, if you get an answer wrong… well, let's hope luck is on his side for once. Though, what are the odds of that?" Fuwa mused. Yugi wanted to ask what he meant, but someone else came in.
"Ryuichi Fuwa… it's time to head to the stage."
The brunet nodded. "Got it, better get to your seat Yugi." That was all he said before heading off. Yugi looked at him until he was gone, but the other stage assistant was still there, motioning for him to follow. The high schooler walked out of the room, and was led by the person. Eventually, he was taken to the stage, but was guided to the front of the rows where he sat down and got a good look at the set. In a few short seconds just as he sat down, the lights began to illuminate and the show was about to begin.
"Big Money! It's Game De Get Show!" The same announcer from last week appeared in the center of the stage, with his microphone and his large smile upon his face. "Welcome back everyone, to this week's episode! Once again, we're here to dream and get that big money! We had a slight change of challenger tonight, originally we were supposed to have Yugi Mutou, a high schooler from Domino High as requested by our Champion. Instead, his best friend has taken his place, young Jounouchi Katsuya!" The announcer gestured his hand over the lower side of the stage, where Jounouchi was sitting. "He is here to get the prize money in order to pay off his father's debt! We give him our best wishes, and he will need it against his opponent! This is his ninth time here, our reigning champ of luck, you all know him! The one blessed by the goddess of fortune, the Lucky Legend, give it up for Ryuichi Fuwa!"
The idol looked down at Jonouchi, giving him a bit of a scoff. The blond returned it with a glare, which made the brunet smirk. "Looks like you didn't get the lesson. Those who are born as lions are the strongest. Hopefully after I defeat ya, you'll really understand." He said up on his high seat.
"Now then, for today's game, we have Electric Concentration!" A squared electric board came down on the stage. On it, were the letters A through K. The first three letters were on top, the next five were the second row and the remaining making the last row. B, E, G and J had a green background while the others had a red panel "Let me explain the rules, behind each of these panels are matching sets of cards and a joker! The players will get their turns depending on how many cards they get correct. However, this week will include a twist. For every time their opponents get the right cards, there will be a mild shock to their body."
"W-what?!" Jounouchi gasped. Yugi was surprised by this as well. He turned from Jounouchi to Fuwa, who had that sly smile on him. Was this the surprise he was talking about? Could he have made the game like this?
"Now then," The Announcer was almost done explaining. "If you end up getting the joker, all the cards you've gotten will go to your opponent. Naturally, the one that will go first is this week's challenger! So then, take your turn Jounouchi!"
The blond looked up at the board, trying to find a good match to give him an advantage. He had to think carefully, otherwise he wouldn't be able to get any of the cards. "A and K." He made a guess, hoping for the best outcome. Unfortunately, while both slots had the black diamonds, A had three while K had five.
"Ooooh, so close to!" The announce said in anticipation. "Now it's the Champions turn!"
Fuwa closed his eyes, not even looking at the board as he gave his answer. "A and C." The other two panels were flipped, revealing the matching pair. When that happened, Jounouchi got that shock that was mentioned. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad since it was mild. But now that Fuwa had gotten a pair, he would keep guessing until he would get one wrong. Jounouchi slumped after he got done with his experience.
"Good job, Champion! You may continue with your turn!" The Announcer told the Lucky Legend.
Fuwa kept his eyes closed, while he had his smile on his face. He was aware that this would be his win. "B and J." The panels flipped over, revealing a matching pair of seven black clubs. He was right again, making Jounouchi have another shock, slightly stronger than before. "E and G." Fuwa said another guess, revealing the matching set of nine red diamonds. Then he guessed D and K, revealing another pair. He kept getting the right answers, and for each right one he ended up shocking Jounouchi with a higher voltage than before. Eventually, he cleared the whole board, saved for one slot which many assumed was the joker.
"Amazing! Amazing! Truly amazing! The Champion was able to get all the cards in one try! He has won this round of our game!" The Announcer declared. Fuwa laughed in his triumph while Jounouchi, who had taken a lot of pain from the electricity, fell onto the surface of the table, knocked out as his body jolted a bit. "Alright, we will be taking a short break, so stay tuned for the next segment!" The cameras went off air, which was the right time for some of the assistants to get Jounouchi out of the chair and bring him to the back room for him to rest.
Fuwa hopped out of his seat, still putting on that smile of his. "Like I said, you're only as strong as you are when ya born. If he didn't get that through his head, he will now if that electricity didn't fry his brain." He continued to laugh, all the while leaving the stage and heading to his own room. Yugi was mortified, on the one hand he knew it was a game. Yet he was also certain that Fuwa set this game up with the intentions of Yugi being in that chair. Fuwa didn't even care about Jounouchi and how he was afterwards. He probably wouldn't even care if it was Yugi either. He felt himself getting frustrated, that anger made something familiar in him snap. Something in his Millenium Puzzle which made the eye in the center glow and surround him with blinding light.
It was already the end of the show, everyone else had gone home and the stage was all cleared. Fuwa wanted to check up and see how Yugi was doing, but he didn't get the chance. He was nowhere in the crowd, which meant he probably went back to the dressing room with that blond. From what he was told, Jounouchi got knocked out by the shocks, but he will be alright. He didn't have any time to check up on that kid, so he just went with the rest of the show. Although, as the lights were out and he looked around the stage, he still had his smile on his face. "Got to admit, it was fun having to see that guy get fried. Too bad it wasn't Yugi though, boss ain't gonna like he set that up for nothing." Fuwa said out loud, believing no one was hearing him. "Ah well, I'll just have to think of some other game and a different time and place to challenge that kid." He began to walk towards a nearby exit, deciding to head home for the night since there was nothing left for him.
"Fuwa!" The Lucky Legend paused in where he was, turning around to see who was calling him. It wasn't a voice he recognized, so he thought it was a random fan or someone from the station. Instead, he saw a young boy with a leather outfit and a Domino high jacket that he used as a cape. His arms were crossed over his chest, and he had a stern look upon his eyes. "It's game time." He said, with those slanted, magenta eyes of his.
'Is that Yugi?' Fuwa thought to himself, seeing the young Domino boy there. It was sort of dark, but he could see the outline fine and noticed the item around his neck. 'What's with him all of sudden? He seems totally different from before?' Fuwa kept his cool, slightly interested in this new version of 'Yugi'. 'I wonder if this is that other face Kaiba mentioned. If so, this will get interesting!' Fuwa knew the time had come, he wanted a real challenge and this 'Yugi' would give it to him. "I've been waitin' for this! Let me choose the game then! I have the perfect one!" It was the same set up, though it took awhile to get everything ready. They were playing the same game Fuwa went up against with Jounouchi. The Lucky Legend sat on his high seat, while 'Yugi' was the one below. Two spotlights were on either of them, as the rest of the stage, save for the board, was covered in shadows.
"The game will be the same from today's episode: Electric Concentration. However, the shock will be more powerful than before. So I suggest you try and get at least one right."
"Can I at least add a few features?" 'Yugi' asked, being chilled as Fuwa explained the rules.
"Such as?" He raised a brow, playing along out of curiosity.
"We will take turns even if one of us obtains cards." 'Yugi' stated. Seemed like a simple and fair enough request. Fuwa was the one that set it up himself on his own, the least he could do was give 'Yugi' something in return. Not that it would give him much of an advantage.
"I'll allow it. It doesn't matter how the turns go, I'll win this in no time." Fuwa still had his confidence, after all, he was on a higher pedestal than this student, in both metaphorical and literal senses. "However, if you don't mind, I'd like to start this match off."
'Yugi' looked up at his opponent, having a smile of assuraness just like Fuwa had. "Very well, go at it."
Fuwa mused under his breath. "Alright then… I pick C and H." The game began once Fuwa said his letters. The two panels flipped over, revealing the three black clubs as a matching pair. Upon getting it right, 'Yugi' was punished as he got his electric shock from the chair. As promised, it was much stronger than what Jounouchi had. However, he would use that to his advantage.
"I… and F." 'Yugi' declared. The two panels flipped, revealing a two of red hearts and a five of red hearts. Since they weren't a matching pair, they were flipped back over to their letter side.
Fuwa made his next guess, A and E, which showed the matching pair of seven red diamonds. 'Yugi' received another harsh shock. But he kept persisting despite the odds of this challenge.
"I… and F…" He declared through his horsed breath.
Fuwa was confused, staring at Yugi with bafflement. "What? But those are the same ones you chose before. What are ya doing?" He may not have cared about what was going on, but he was still curious. 'Yugi' remained silent, however. So he wasn't going to reveal his big plan, Fuwa should have figured. "Heh, already giving up. So be it, B and K." Another matching set, which meant that Fuwa only needed two more matches to win the game. A third shock was given to 'Yugi', through that experience, he called out his next pair. The same one he declared. Fuwa was really uncertain at this point. "You're getting the same pair again? Did the shocks fry ya brain or what?" He asked, pointing at his own head. He really hoped the kid wouldn't get any brain damage, last thing he wanted was to have another guy be crippled because of him. Would not look good on his image.
Just as he asked that question though, suddenly the lights went out, making everyone and everything in total darkness. "Eh?" Fuwa looked around, trying to get adjusted to the blackness. "Now look what ya did! All that electricity used on ya caused the breaker to blow." At least now 'Yugi' could take a break from being shocked. Soon enough, the lights came back on, but the board was reset as a result.
"Looks like the backup energy has been activated. Now then, shall we continue the game?" 'Yugi' asked.
"Ya still want to continue, despite your disadvantage?" Fuwa knew he had to be planning something, but since he was so close to victory, he overlooked it. He wasn't going to give up with a half-assed win, the boss wouldn't be too fond of that. "Alright then, there's only five cards left. We'll leave off where we were, so I'll go next. G and…" Before he could pick the other card, the panel flipped over, revealing the five of red hearts. "Hey look! The other five of hearts! That's one of the cards you kept calling out." 'Yugi' stared at Fuwa with such intense eyes, while the brunet was none the wiser. The Lucky Legend stood up on his seat, knowing full well what panel he would call out next. "So that means, the other five card to match is F!" Those were his final words, as he watched the other panel be flipped over. But to his shock, instead of the other five of hearts, there was an image of a skull-like creature in a black cloak. Fuwa was stunned, looking at the image on the card. "W-what the? The joker?!" He sat back down, staring at the board in bewilderment. How could this have happened? All of the cards were right there, they should have remained where they were. Though now that he thought about it, if that were true, why were the revealed ones flipped over again? "Don't tell me… when the electricity was cut off… It ended up resetting the whole board!" His eyes looked over at 'Yugi', now fully grasping what he was doing this whole time. "This was your plan from the beginning?!"
The high schooler was the one that had the cocky smile now, for since Fuwa got the Joker, all of the cards he collected were now 'Yugi's', making him the winner. "Looks like your luck has officially run out. With you picking the Joker, all of your cards are mine. And as punishment, you get all the electricity in one shock." As he explained this, Fuwa's seat started to lower more to the ground, as his face spelt out defeat and annoyance. Before his chair hit the floor, he got hit with the wave of shocks. It was far more painful than he thought, as it was all of the voltage at once. It was so powerful, it caused his chair to split apart, making him land on the floor as the volts coursed through his body. 'Yugi' watched with a sadistic grin, glad that Fuwa got what he deserved. Sparkle was right, you didn't always need luck to win, you needed a plan.
It was a week after the last Game De Get Show, where Jounouchi got to make his appearance. He did not win any yen, and instead got volts through his body. Thankfully, he received no damage, so he was fine. Oddly enough, after that show, the group stopped hearing from Fuwa and he completely ceased attending Domino High all together. Honda was happy, since that meant that Miho could no longer be seduced by him. Jounouchi was also glad he didn't have to see that smug guy's face in real life. It was night time on another week day, where the blond and Yugi were at the Kame Game Shop, having another sleep over while watching some television. Specifically, the Game De Get Show, as it was on and they waited all day for it. The announcer was once again, describing today's challenge and contestants to the viewers.
"That damn Fuwa… today will be his tenth win." Jounouchi scoffed, watching the show take place.
"If you hate him that much now, why watch it?" Yugi had to ask.
Jounouchi sighed. "I may hate that bastard, but I still love the show. I just wished that I had won something, other than a current of electricity."
Yugi laughed. "At least you can say you're famous at school! A lot of the girls even started paying attention to you, since you were on that show." It was true, the day after that show aired, many people began asking Jounouchi questions, approaching him and even noticing him to a degree. The blond wasn't used to such praise, though he also wasn't against it either.
He tried playing it cool, looking away. "Eh, most of them only mocked me for going up against a legend…" That part was also true. However, a smile spread on Jounouchi's lips. "Still though, it was nice to be on TV for a change. Who knows, maybe this is a sign! My calling to be a famous actor! I think the camera looked good on me!" Yugi remained quiet, not giving a comment on that topic.
"Now then, for this week's challenge, it is the electronic roulette from two weeks ago! It's the champions' turn now!" The announcer of the show said with his camera-ready smile. "His opponent was only able to get two out of thirty-six! It should be a piece of cake for the champ to beat that!" Ryuichi Fuwa waited as the wheel spun around, he had on his signature smirk, pressing the button as he waited for the light to land on the big number. It started slowing down, inching closer and closer to 36, only for it to skip and land straight on one. "What's this!? He landed on one?!" The announcer declared in utter shock.
"That can't be!" Fuwa was just as surprised, feeling his high seat starting to lower down.
"Unbelievable! The miraculous champion, who has won nine games in a row due to his impossible luck, has lost!" As if it couldn't be anymore humiliating to the former champion, his own seat fell apart, making him crash on the floor. "Oh my! The chair suddenly broke!"
Jounouchi and Yugi watched, their eyes wide and their mouths hanging open. They couldn't believe their eyes either. Fuwa, the luckiest man in Japan and probably the world, lost to a game of luck so easily. Yugi gave a small smile, as he commented on what occurred. "Looks like Fuwa ended up losing his luck." They looked at the star, who was on the ground in a humiliating way.
The blond laughed at the show. "Best episode ever!" He declared. Yugi had to agree, it was a strange episode, but one he didn't mind. At least Jounouchi was happy.
