Jasper
I never expected to be so unsure of my relationship with Alice. I started having my doubts when she admitted to knowing Edward was coming and not telling us about it, and things have gotten progressively worse since then. When Emmett came to me and asked me to go hunting, I was surprised at what he had to say. I may not have believed him, but the recording the pack had was undeniable. Alice and Edward had always been close, but I'd never worried about their relationship until now. I couldn't help but wonder if something more was going on with them for her to be willing to kill our siblings.
That's how I found myself sitting in Harry Clearwater's living room in the middle of the night next to Paul and Embry who was pretending to be vulnerable in a hospital bed. The pack had told Carlisle that he was still weak hoping that Alice would take their bait. He truly was weak, but not nearly as bad as they'd let on. Sam said that he would be staying at the Clearwater's place and the pack was going to stay at his house to give them some space. Leah was furious at the idea of me being alone with her family when we knew Alice would be coming, so Paul insisted on being here. There seemed to be nothing he wouldn't do for her, or for Rosalie.
Leah was my favorite of the pack. She reminded me a lot of Rosalie, and she was perfect for Emmett. He had come to me weeks before their trip to Seattle and told me he was going to propose to her. He only said that in front of Edward to keep Alice from revealing Bella's pregnancy, but he had every intention of marrying Leah. When I met him last night, I had assumed he was meeting me because her ring had come in. He had sent me to a jeweler we used in New York to get it. He chose a simple setting with a four karat center stone. When we got back last night, he had proposed to her in front of her parents and the whole pack. She was overjoyed, and clearly hadn't expected that large of a ring. Emmett is urging her to marry him before the upcoming battle in case they don't both make it out. I prayed that we would all live to make it to their real wedding.
Paul Lahote was a different story. He had grown to be the bane of my existence. I despised him for imprinting on my sister. Embry was much kinder to her, but she loved Paul. Rosalie had always been well protected with me and Emmett and since she met Paul she had already faced three of our kind on her own. I knew the pack was more capable of protecting their own than Paul had demonstrated with Rosalie. I was impressed with her ability to protect herself, but I made my distaste for Paul known. I could feel his anxiety building and I didn't know if it was from being near me or waiting for Alice. Embry was anxious too.
"Is she ever going to show up? I want to go back to Sam's." Embry whined.
I laughed. "I'm so sorry nobody has showed up to kill you yet, Em."
He groaned and laid back on the bed. "The worst part is being stuck here with you, Paul. I know Rose is lying to me, and it's your fault. You reek of sex, by the way. Could've taken a damn shower before you got back."
"Me? You're real funny, Call." Paul scoffed. "I told her to come talk to you, she's too afraid of your friends to do it."
"Who is Rosalie afraid of?" I asked. I would deal with anyone that threatened her personally.
"Quil and Jacob." Paul responded.
Embry sat up again. "Bullshit! They wouldn't say anything to her!"
"Jacob pushed her and screamed at her in front of the entire pack. You can ask anyone. Quil talked to her privately and accused her of using you to hurt me and warned her to stay away. Why don't you ask them about it?" Paul was shaking.
I growled. "They better not hurt my sister."
"They'd have to get through me first." Paul told me.
"Me too." Embry agreed. "I had no idea they said anything to her. I will talk to them."
We heard rustling outside, so Paul stepped out of the room. Embry laid back again, pretending to be unconscious and I moved to the kitchen so I couldn't be seen from the windows. I heard the door creak open and there was Alice, coming toward Embry. She was muttering something to herself, but it was too low to make out. I needed her to do something incriminating before I revealed myself so she couldn't twist the story. I wondered how she would kill him without waking the humans. I watched as she moved the hair out of his face and knelt down next to him, her hand resting on his throat. Was she going to bite him? She pulled a syringe from her back and placed her hand over his vein. I had to confront her.
"Alice?" She jumped when she heard me. "What the hell are you doing?"
She backed up. "Jasper... I'm, um.. I was just..."
I walked over and took the syringe from her hand. "What were you going to do to Embry? Why are you even on the reservation?"
"Why are you here?" She retorted. "Carlisle asked me to bring this to him."
"Oh did he?" I asked. "In the middle of the night? With none of the pack here? And he chose you, with no medical training?"
"He did." She said.
I reached for her hand. "Come with me, then. I'd like to have a word with him."
She accepted my hand. "Of course, Jas. We need to give this to Embry first though."
I heard Paul a moment before he walked in to the kitchen. "Paul, could you give this to Rosalie? Carlisle sent it for Embry. Could she give it to him for us?"
"Of course. I'll call her now." He took the syringe from my hand and walked over to the phone.
Alice was panicking. "There's really no need to do that, I know how to give an injection."
"That's ok, Rose wanted to check on him anyway." Paul replied. I knew he wasn't calling Rosalie, he was calling Sam. Alice would die tonight.
"Hey, Rosie. Alice brought over some medicine that Carlisle sent for Embry. Yeah, she's still here I told her that we can take care of it if you want to come over." He hung up the phone. "She'll be right here." He told us.
Alice grabbed my hand, much tighter now. "Can we leave, Jas? I don't want to make Paul uncomfortable. I know he said he's struggling not to phase around us."
"You're not bothering me." He replied. "I trust Jasper."
"Jasper, let's go." Alice pleaded.
Alice trying to manipulate me was the most hurtful part of this scenario. I almost wanted to allow my mate to live, but I knew we couldn't. Even I couldn't take on the entire pack, and I didn't think I'd ever be able to trust her again either. I knew there was some information I needed from her before she died, though. I agreed to leave but knew I'd have to keep her on the reservation while we talked. We walked out the back door of the Clearwater's home and in to the woods.
"Jasper we need to run. Paul wasn't happy with me, I'm not supposed to be on the res." She urged me.
There was a large tree stump in front of us and I sat down. "Why don't you sit with me, Alice? We need to talk."
"It's not safe here, we can talk at hom-"
I interrupted her. "Sit, Alice."
She sat down next to me. "Am I going to die tonight, Jas?"
I didn't answer. "Tell me what's going on with you and Edward."
"Oh, Jasper. Do the wolves know? It's really not what you think." She was terrified.
"Know what, Alice? What is there to know?"
She looked down. "I've been helping Edward. I was there tonight to kill Embry." She admitted.
"I knew that, darlin'. That's why I was there." I told her.
"The wolves are going to kill me." She realized. "You don't understand, Jas please let me explain."
I nodded. "Ali, I need you to tell me what's coming for us. Do you want me to die? You know what you did was wrong, but you can still save the rest of us."
"I did this for you, Jasper. Edward kept telling me he'd kill you if I didn't help." She put her face in her hands.
That was bullshit. Edward may be able to read minds, but even when we had just been sparring he'd never gotten the better of me. She was either lying again, or she had no confidence in me, and both hurt. "Why wouldn't you come to me? Why not tell me what's going on?" I asked.
She shook her head. "I was afraid. Edward isn't the same since he left Bella, he's really dangerous. I didn't want any of the family to get hurt."
I couldn't believe that she hadn't trusted me to keep her safe. To keep everyone safe. But she couldn't claim that she did this to keep the family from getting hurt when the plan involved killing Rose and Emmett. I knew I couldn't trust her. "Tell me what they're planning."
"He's planning to kill Rosalie and Emmett. He just wants Bella. Victoria is working with him. She said she doesn't care if Bella dies or not, as long as she's separated from her real mate. She knows she can't take Jacob out herself. I hoped that the tracker would kill him and this would all be over but then he bit Embry instead." This would have ended with Jacob's death? I don't think so.
"What is the plan for Victoria's attack? Is Jacob the primary target now?" I asked.
"I was supposed to take the imprints to Alaska, away from the fight. Edward was going to meet us there and demand that Bella go with him. Victoria would know that we were there and she would show up along with some of her newborns. Edward plans to kill her himself, but from what I've seen Rosalie, Leah, Emily, and Emmett will all die." She explained.
"What is his plan with Bella?"
She was angry. "He wants her, even though Angela is his mate. He wants Bella to be turned and live with them. I told him that's no life for her, but he won't listen."
"Who will be in Forks?"
She shuddered. "Jas, they have almost a hundred newborns. The plan is to eradicate the pack. Jacob, Paul, and Sam are the main targets since they're the best fighters. Once they're gone, it shouldn't take too long for them to kill the rest of you. I wanted to end this before it came to that."
One hundred newborns? How would we face that?I took her hand. "I love you, Alice. Is there anything else we need to know?"
"You need to call Charlotte and Peter to come fight with you. Something has changed since my first vision, and I see Esme dying soon. If they come, she should be fine. Keep the girls away from the fight, but don't go to Alaska. They shouldn't stay on the reservation either. Jasper, please let me expl-"
I heard a growl behind us and turned to see the pack in wolf form and my siblings. "There's no time, Ali." I walked away from her.
"Sam, can we talk for a moment?" He nodded and phased. "Rosalie, sit with Alice."
Rosalie walked over to take my seat and took Alice's hand. Sam and I walked far enough away that the others wouldn't hear us.
"The answer is no, Jasper. We can't let her live, we can't trust her." He told me.
"What if she stays here? She won't have any contact with Edward and she will be with someone in the pack all the time. We may need her." I pleaded. I knew she had to die, but not yet.
He looked away. "My pack will vote, and I will respect their decision. The imprints get a vote too. Let's go back to my place, Bella and Emily are there."
We rejoined the pack and Sam phased to let them know what was happening. I took Alice's hand and we walked back to Sam's house. Rosalie looked confused, but walked close to Paul. When we walked in, Emily and Bella hugged each other and backed away from us. They were terrified of Alice, and I couldn't blame them. Alice and I stood by the door while the rest of the pack filed in to the room, all standing close to the human imprints. I didn't like our odds, but I had to try to keep my mate alive a little bit longer. I thought her gift could prove helpful to us if we could trust her.
Sam walked to the center of the room to speak. "We are taking a vote on how we will handle the matter of Alice Cullen. She has betrayed our trust and tried to kill one of our own earlier this evening. She has been colluding with Edward Cullen and Victoria. They had a plan to kill Rosalie, Emmett, Leah, and Emily. They also planned to kidnap Bella and turn her. Jasper has asked that we allow her to live a while longer as her gift could be useful to us. I don't think that we can trust her, but I need input from the rest of you. The question is, should Alice be executed tonight? Let's start with the imprints."
Everyone looked to Emily. "Yes. I don't trust her. She was going to kill me." I expected that one.
Bella was next. "Alice, you were my best friend. How could you do this to me? You offered to help me set up a nursery for my baby and you knew Edward planned to kill both of us." She started crying. "I will let Jacob vote for me. I don't want my friend to die, but I can't trust her." She ran from the room and Emily followed her.
I looked at my siblings, hoping they would understand where I was coming from. Emmett was staring at the floor, and I could tell he was torn.
"I vote no." He announced. "Alice, you're going to die but I think we should use you while we can. Make no mistake, what you've done is unforgivable. I just want to use your gift to keep Leah safe."
Rosalie looked angry, and glared at Alice with bright red eyes. "Look in my eyes, sister. You and Edward forced me to do something I swore I'd never do. You hurt someone I love, and planned to come back and kill him later to make me feel incompetent. Your gift isn't worth that much to me."
"Is that a yes, Rosalie?" Sam asked. She nodded.
We were through with the imprints and moved on to the pack. I expected the majority of them would want to execute her today.
"I say yes. I can't trust her." Jared announced.
"Agreed. It's a yes for me too." Quil said.
"I also vote yes." Sam looked at me. "I'm sorry Jasper, but she can't be trusted."
"Well I vote no." Seth spoke up. "I trust Emmett's judgement and he thinks that letting her live will keep my sister safe."
"I'm with Seth and Emmett." Leah told us.
Paul and Embry looked at each other. "We're both voting no." Embry announced.
"You two agree on something?" Rosalie scoffed.
"We do." Paul told her. "Alice could help us take care of Edward when the time comes."
"It might mean more protection for you, Rose. And all of the other imprints." Embry explained.
"She won't though." Jacob retorted. "She was going to kill Embry. I'm glad you two have kissed and made up, but I vote yes for me and Bella."
Jacob having Bella's vote gave them 7 votes yes and 5 votes no.
"Can we call Carlisle and Esme first? I'd like her to say goodbye to them." I asked Sam.
"Of course, Jasper." Sam walked over to the phone and called Carlisle.
Carlisle was at the hospital and asked if he could come by after he finished his shift. I looked over at the clock. It was 7:30. His shift would end at 9 and he would have to go get Esme. Things were tense in the room, but Rosalie tried to enjoy a few minutes with her sister anyway. Paul watched her protectively, as if Alice would try to hurt her sister in front of the whole pack. Emmett even joined them as they reminisced on old times we'd had together. I oddly didn't feel distraught or anxious knowing of Alice's imminent demise. Her betrayal had severed any remaining ties between the two of us. We were interrupted when there was a knock at the door. I smelled a human.
"That must be Kim." Emily commented. "I forgot that she was coming over this morning."
Emily walked over to the door and Jared followed her protectively. When she opened it, I saw a young native girl smiling back at her.
"Good morning, Emily!" She said brightly.
"Kim, good morning. This probably isn't the best time, I've had a family emergency."
She pushed the door open a little wider, and Kim's eyes met Jared's. I could feel the intense emotions that came along with their new imprint.
"Damn it." Paul muttered.
"Actually, I suppose it's okay if you come in." Emily stepped aside. "Do you know Jared?"
Kim smiled at him. "I do, we are in the same grade. I haven't seen you or Paul around for awhile."
Paul waved at her. "Hi Kim." She smiled back at him.
"We've been doing some work for the council, it keeps us busy." Jared chuckled.
Rosalie walked over to the girl. "Hi, Kim. I'm Rosalie, Paul's girlfriend."
Kim looked terrified. I think Rose had forgotten that her eyes were red. "Um... hi, Rosalie.." she muttered, looking at Jared.
Jared was glaring at her. "Your eyes, Rose." He whispered low enough that the humans wouldn't hear him.
Realizing her mistake, she went back to Paul and stood behind him. Jared turned around and started to lead Kim in to the kitchen when Alice appeared at her side. She turned the girl around and put her hand around her neck.
"Alice, darlin' please don't do this." I pleaded. "Let the girl go."
"You people are supposed to be my FAMILY." She screamed. "If you don't want me to hurt the girl, let me leave in peace. I won't go to Edward."
Rosalie scoffed. "You planned to kill half of us, Alice!"
Kim started crying. "Jared, please help me." She begged. Jared growled, but didn't get too close. He knew Alice could kill her with a simple flick of her wrist.
"Alice let the girl go or I'll kill you myself." I told her.
She loosened her grip for a second, and that was all the time Emmett needed to get her away from Kim who ran in to Jared's arms.
Emmett was struggling to hold her. "I'm sorry, Jasper. I won't wait any longer."
I looked away as Emmett ripped Alice's head from her shoulders. I could hear the human women screaming. Leah and Quil followed Emmett outside to start the fire. I couldn't watch them burn her, even if I knew it had to happen. I felt badly for Kim having just discovered our supernatural world in the worst way possible. I tried to calm the poor girls, but I'm afraid my gifts brought them little comfort.
"I am so sorry, Jared." I told him.
He glared at me. "It's not your fault. I'm not sorry about what happened to Alice."
Rosalie stood and walked out of the room. Paul and Embry both stood to follow her, but I told them to let me go instead. Sam called Carlisle and I told them I'd be back with Rosalie later. I knew it would be hard for her to lose her sister, but her fear hadn't started until after Alice's death. We needed to talk about what had happened and how things would go from here. I followed a safe distance behind her and watched as she hunted. I was impressed at her new skills. She moved more gracefully and purposefully. I wondered if Sam had been training her when they had patrolled together. After draining her second deer, she found a seat on a large rock.
"I know you're behind me, Jas." She said after awhile.
I walked over to sit next to her. "Penny for your thoughts?"
She shook her head. "I know what comes next. You're going to live with Peter and Charlotte. I can handle losing Alice and Edward, but not you."
I put my arm around her and pulled her closer to me. "You're my sister and Emmett is my brother. You will never lose me."
"Yeah, I'm sure we'll keep up our family charade. Go back to high school with Leah and Paul, and you being the odd man out this time." She laughed at the thought. "Please don't fall in love with a human and start a war for us in a hundred years."
This was the sister I was used to. Rosalie could come off as cold, but she was so kind and genuine. I'd stay in Forks as long as my family needed me to, even if there was no threat.
"Alice and I had drifted apart, the same way you and Emmett had." I told her. "I'm not sure she was ever really my mate."
She scoffed. "Maybe she was Edward's. I know Angela isn't."
"If that's true, he'll be here soon." I commented.
"I just can't wait for him to burn too. He did this to Alice. He destroyed our family, all because of his fascination with Bella." I could feel her anger building. "How could he work with Victoria? Kill his own coven?"
I shook my head. "I don't know, Rose. I just hope the pack allows me to stay with you and Emmett after the danger is gone."
"They will." She assured me. "Too bad there's not another female wolf that can imprint on you."
I laughed at the thought. I loved Leah, but I couldn't handle my own wolf. "I'll be alright on my own for awhile." I said.
"Promise you won't leave us?" She asked.
I stood and took her hand. "Of course. Let's go back to Sam's. Embry found out what Quil said to you and I want to see their argument."
She rolled her eyes. "And I thought Alice was the dramatic one."
When we got back, Carlisle and Esme were there. Esme was sitting with Emmett trying to comfort him. The grief coming from him and Bella was overwhelming. Carlisle was examining Embry, who had healed much quicker than we expected. He wouldn't ever admit it, but he viewed Embry as one of his children the same way he did Bella. They had spent a lot of time with us before the rest of the pack did, and they were the most comfortable around our family. He had been overjoyed when Jacob agreed to let him handle Bella's prenatal care, with Sue assisting of course. He seemed to be feeling more relieved with Embry's improved condition than sad over the loss of Alice.
Bella was inconsolable. She was sobbing and about to hyperventilate. Carlisle tried to get close and Jacob growled at him. He wouldn't be able to comfort her anyway. I walked over to her anyway, ignoring the pack. To my surprise, Paul shared Jacob's feelings about my close proximity to Bella. It almost felt the way the other wolves imprints did, but not as intense. That wasn't possible though. I decided to ask him about it later. Knowing that none of them would phase with all of the imprints in the room, I knelt in front of Bella and took her hand.
"Bella, she wasn't the girl you knew anymore. Alice was never the same after we left Forks." I told her.
She sobbed louder. "It's all my fault, Jasper. If I hadn't cut my finger on my birthday you wouldn't have attacked me and none of this ever would've happened."
"You attacked her?" Jacob growled.
"Not now, Black." Rosalie responded.
"That's not true, Bella. You were never meant to be with Edward. Alice saw what would happen on your birthday and she let the party go as planned anyway."
"Emmett had to kill his sister because of me. You lost your mate." She buried her head in Jacob's chest as she cried.
"We weren't truly mates, Bella. She was going to kill Emmett and Rose, and we don't know what she had planned for you."
"I shouldn't have given Jake my vo-"
Paul interrupted her. "The bitch was going to die anyway, B."
"She wouldn't have traumatized Kim though." She retorted.
"And you can play what if all damn day but it doesn't change anything." He replied coldly. "Alice Cullen is dead and you and my mate are both safer for it. I didn't want her to die yet, but I'm glad she is and you should be too. Do you want that sadistic ex of yours to kidnap you and keep you from Jacob?"
Jacob growled and Bella cried louder. "Of course not!"
"Then get the hell over it." He replied and strolled out the door. Leah followed him.
"Bella, our family is okay, really." I told her.
"We really are." Emmett agreed. "I only did what had to be done, and I'd do it again to keep you safe." He looked over to Kim. "I am so sorry about what my sister did to you."
Jared nodded. "I don't blame any of your family. You're pack too, Emmett."
We visited with the pack for awhile longer. I didn't want to leave until Bella had time to calm down. Emily started lunch at noon and I loved them, but I didn't like smelling human food. Billy Black called Sam to let him know his daughter Rachel was in town and there would be a bonfire tonight to celebrate her return. We were expected to attend. Rose and Emmett decided to go home with us for a while to help sort through Alice's things. I would miss her, and purging her things may make it easier to cope. Rosalie told me to cling to her and the pack and that's what I planned to do. I was excited to spend time with them at their bonfire tonight. I knew the closer we got to the weekend, the closer we were to seeing Edward again. We started to walk out the door when I noticed Paul and Leah had come back and were sitting on the couch together, not coming with us.
"Paul, Leah, aren't you coming?" I asked them.
Paul looked dumbfounded. "You want me to come? Thought this was a family thing."
"It is. You're my brother, whether I like it or not. I do actually like my sister, Leah." I told him. Leah slapped his arm and laughed.
The two of them stood and walked to the door to join us. I turned around before walking out.
"By the way, guys." The entire pack turned to look at me. "I know that Alice wasn't innocent, but I blame Edward for her demise. When the time comes, his death will be at my hands."
Sam smiled. "I think we all can agree to that."
"As long as I get to help." Jacob quipped.
I walked out the door to join my new family. We had lost two members of our coven, even if Edward wasn't dead yet, but we gained an entire pack. I pondered on what Rosalie said about another female joining the pack and imprinting on me. For now, I was happy with the family I had and I was determined to keep them safe from Edward and Victoria.
