Episode 16: The White Coated Turnabout
It was Wednesday in Domino, Japan as the heat was beginning to pick up, indicating the fast approach of summer. The bell in the high school signaled to the students that classes were over and they could head home. Yugi Mutou was gathering his belongings in his backpack, as he had been focused on his studies. Despite the Risa incident yesterday, he was trying to keep up his school and social life. Besides, Risa wasn't the worst thing that had happened to him so far. He also managed to overcome his fever, yet his grandfather was insistent on letting him stay home for today just to be sure. Yugi, however, didn't want to miss his friends. He wanted to make sure they were okay after yesterday. Thankfully none of them were hurt, and they were pretty understanding. Jounouchi just wished he could have been there when Kaiba came in and mopped the floor with those wicked witch sisters. Of course, he didn't like the idea that the rich kid had to tear apart Yugi's Violet Hecate, but Yugi stated he wasn't that bothered. After all, it was because of that card that got him involved with Risa. Maybe it was for the best that neither of them kept it. Even Anzu agreed that it was for the better.
Yugi wondered what everyone was doing the rest of the day. He didn't expect them to hang out, they probably wanted to settle down after what happened hours ago. Surprisingly, Anzu wouldn't have been opposed to the idea, but she had to cover a shift since someone was sick and she needed the money. Yugi understood, and Anzu promised to take a rain check. The short student walked past a few classrooms down the halls to check on his other friends. He didn't have to go far to see his brunet friend cleaning up one of the rooms. It was part of his job as a member of the Beautification Club. "Honda!" Yugi called as he entered the door. The taller of the pair turned around, gaining a smile on his face.
"Oh, hey Yugi. How are you doing?"
"I'm doing fine, thanks for asking.." Yugi responded. "Looks like you're going to be busy today."
"Yeah, I'm in charge of cleaning up the second floor classrooms today. It's a lot of work, but it has to get done. A clean classroom equals less distraction and a more steady environment for students to focus their studies in. Even if that means I have to sacrifice many hours just to make it happen, knowing that it will better the reputation of the school and students fills me with a sense of fulfillment." There Honda went again, going about his speech to make the Beautification Club much more than just a bunch of students playing janitor. Still, Yugi wouldn't judge him. Honda accepted his obsession with games, and he admired Honda for being so dedicated to his task, finding meaning in even the most simple and unwanted jobs.
The shortest of the two giggled, glad to see that Honda was willing to give it his all. "Say, is Jounouchi going to help you today?" He asked. "I've seen him help you out the last couple of weeks. I thought he actually joined the Club, but considering how much he makes fun of it…"
Honda sighed in reluctance. "I wish he joined, he's pretty good at mopping and window washing, I'll give him that. Actually, he's been helping me with this stuff in exchange for money."
"Eh?" Yugi tilted his head, a bit confused at that, so Honda elaborated.
"Yeah, Jounouchi made a deal with a lot of us members. He would take some of our shifts and let us go home early, in exchange we pay him for it. Many of them jumped on the opportunity since they needed to do extra cramming for the finals coming up." Yugi heard this explanation, though he shouldn't be surprised Jounouchi was in need of yen. And he was one who would rather earn it by his own hands instead of it being handed to him. Still, it concerned Yugi that he needed payment right away. Did something happen? "Didn't tell me what the money was for, but said it was urgent and he needed it today. Anyways, after I gave him the money, he ran out right away."
"I just hope he's okay…" Yugi prayed and showed concern for the blond.
"Don't worry too much, you know he can handle himself. He probably just saw something he wanted but didn't have the money for it. That's usually how it goes." Hearing that did make Yugi feel better. Perhaps that was the reason he was desperate for some cash. "Anyways, I'd ask if you would like to help, but I don't want to strain you and we already have more than enough people now."
"It's okay Honda… good luck." Yugi waved to him as he headed out of the room and went down a few more hallways. Soon enough, he reached the locker bay where he grabbed his shoes, switching his school ones with his house wear. Yugi wasn't sure what he was going to do, maybe he should head home and play a few solo games. Then again, he did have some yen from his allowance all saved up, and since it was hot out perhaps he could reward himself with an ice cream.
"Yugi?" The young boy stopped tying his shoes to look up. Standing next to him was a green haired girl, who bowed slightly as a smile was on her peach colored face.
"Ah! Cosmo, hi!" Yugi greeted, standing up so they could be at eye level. "We seem to have a habit of bumping into one another at the lockers." He joked slightly, which caused her to giggle.
"That is too true to deny." She looked over at him with her sapphire eyes. "I heard you were sick yesterday, you were running a fever and kept falling down."
"Oh that?" Yugi laughed, forgetting that he didn't explain the Risa situation with her. Or maybe she already knew from someone else. Either way, he didn't want her to get upset. "Yeah, but I'm fine now. Must be that summer cold, it left as quickly as it came." Cosmo stared at her friend, however she did not press him for more information.
"If you're sure…"
Yugi merely chuckled nervously. "Hey, did you want to come to the game shop and practice your Duel Monster skills? I think you've improved since last time." Yugi commented.
"Well, I was going to see if I could come over. But I was also going to get some ice cream from the convenient store a few blocks down as well and see if you would like some." Cosmo suggested.
Yugi liked the idea of playing games while eating a soft, frozen treat. However, when he heard where Cosmo planned on getting it, he was a bit skeptical. "Eh… the store doesn't have too many options. And their ice cream is usually freezer burn." Yugi explained. "Why don't we head to the Domino Parlor? They make the best ice cream there!"
"Domino Parlor?" Cosmo repeated.
"Yeah, it's downtown, so it's a bit far. But the trip will be worth it. Then we can head back to play some rounds of Duel Monsters."
Cosmo had never been down that far in the city before, but she figured the least she could do was be there for Yugi. Plus, it was rare for them to hang out together, and she didn't want to waste the opportunity. With a smile and nod, she agreed which made Yugi all the more happy.
Downtown Domino was more quiet and had plenty of attractions and stores. It was no doubt the shopping center of the city, yet it sure was slow on such a day. That meant the line for the Parlor wasn't too bad, long but they managed to get their ice cream within half an hour. Yugi got himself plain vanilla, but Cosmo decided on the lavender flavor, since she liked the color and taste. Once they got their order, the pair headed down the street. Yugi licked his treat eagerly as the frozen cream felt good on his tongue, especially after a hot day. "The Domino Parlor makes the softest ice cream in the city. It's one of the best places to get these treats."
The green haired girl gave a smile, happy Yugi was enjoying his ice cream. She looked at hers for a moment, before taking a taste. Her eyes went wide at the sensation. "Woah, you weren't kidding." She began to eat more of the lavender flavor. "It's odd, I've been to this part of Domino with my sister once, but I never knew about the ice cream shop."
"My mom and I visited the parlor when I was younger." Yugi explained. "That's how I learned about this place."
"Where is your mother?" Cosmo asked. "I never see her at the shop…"
"Oh, she's overseas visiting my dad." Yugi stated. "He works at a big company, but he will allow my mom and me to visit him."
"Does she go over there often?" Cosmo asked.
"She stays a couple of months a year. Usually in the Spring and Summer." Yugi explained. "She should be back before the end of Summer vacation though."
"Are you going with them on the upcoming break?"
"Well, I was thinking about it, but I would rather stay at the game shop. We don't like to leave Grandpa alone. Besides, I plan on doing many summer related activities with you and our friends. My parents were more than understanding when I told them that. I think they're happy I'm finally making friends and being out of my room."
Cosmo giggled at that notion. "At least they are supportive."
"What about you?" Yugi changed the subject. "Any Summer plans?"
"Ah… I'll probably be managing the shop, since my sister is still taking her final classes for her attorney degree and she is applying to offices, which may take some time." Cosmo explained, stating that her summer would just be working in the flower parlor.
"Oh yeah, how is your sister doing? Galaxina, right?" Yugi asked, he had only met the older sister of his friend once. When she came to the school revealing Chouno-sensei's scandal about rule restrictions, resulting in the teacher being fired and having her license revoked. Yugi wondered what happened to the red-haired woman, but he was grateful she wasn't causing any trouble for them.
Cosmo nodded at his question. "She's doing well in her classes, though she is often tired so she hardly has any time to chat with me. Honestly, it's a relief. Galaxina is a bit… overprotective. She doesn't like it when I go out for too long, always wondering where I am, who I'm with… I know it's natural for her to worry about me, I just wished she would give me room to breathe. I'm not an eight year old anymore…" Cosmo sighed, rubbing her neck. Yugi heard the stress in her voice, as he listened. The green haired girl noticed the look he was giving and realized she had been talking a lot. "Ah! Sorry… I'm grateful to have her as my sibling, really. I just wish she would see that she doesn't need to protect me all the time."
"I may not have any siblings myself… but I know if I had a little brother or sister, I would want to protect them against anything." Yugi admitted "Of course, I doubt with the state I am in, I couldn't…" He realized, looking down at his childish body despite his teenage years.
"Well, I think you would make a wonderful older sibling." Cosmo smiled at him. That made Yugi grin as well, as he wished he could have had a sibling. It was no fun being an only child, which was why he envied Cosmo for having someone in her family. Still, even without any brothers or sisters, he had his parents, grandpa and friends. And to Yugi, that was more than enough. The two highschoolers continued to walk, eating their ice creams as they were heading down to the bus station so they could head back to the Kame Game Shop. Their feet however, stopped as Cosmo looked on ahead.
"What's wrong, Cosmo?" Yugi asked, noticing she had paused. His eyes followed to where Cosmo was staring, in the direction of a small shop with its doors opened. Peaking out was the head of a familiar blond, scanning the streets. "Jounouchi?" Yugi gasped in surprise, seeing his friend head back into the store. The two took a closer look at the store he was in. Above the entrance was a sign that read: 'Kawaī, Miryoku, Korekushon' (Translates to: Cute, charm, collection). Yugi recognized this store, it was a shop that markets to young school girls as they had stuffed plushies, keychains of cute anime characters, and anything that was the color pink.
"What's he doing in a shop like that?" Yugi questioned as he and Cosmo got closer, their curiosities leading them to the front doors.
"Maybe he saw something in there he liked?" Cosmo suggested. Though considering who they were talking about, that didn't make any sense. Jounouchi wasn't into stuff like that, unless he was buying it for someone else? Soon enough, the blond began to walk out of the shop, carrying a stuffed, rose-colored teddy bear that was the size of the high schooler. Its body was wrapped up in blue paper, only having the head sticking out. He seemed to be sneaking it out, while keeping his eyes peeled. Was he trying to be stealthy in getting this bear?
"Jounouchi?" The blond jumped in horror, as he looked to his left, seeing two of his other friends staring at him with curiosity in their eyes and ice cream in their hands. Cosmo was the one who called his name while Yugi decided to ask the questions.
"What are you doing with such a big and pink toy?"
"Toy? What toy?!" Jounouchi asked, hiding the bear behind him.
"The… one behind your back." Cosmo pointed. He was still playing dumb and didn't look into their eyes. "It's a cute bear though… Are you buying it for someone?"
"N-No way! Come on, I'm in a hurry." Jounouchi attempted to move away from the two smaller high schoolers.
"Wait, let me see it first!" Yugi begged, attempting to stand on his toes just to be at the same height as the blond. Jounouchi was still defensive, trying to get away from the two while making up excuses, but dodging any of the questions they were asking related to the toy. Yugi was so distracted, he didn't realize he had bumped into someone. His ice cream landed on that person's shirt, leaving a stain. The young boy looked up to see who he had the misfortune of meeting. The person did not look friendly, nor did his friends as they noticed the white mess on his blue tank top. Right away, Yugi tried to settle this feud before it got out of hand, as it usually did. "Ah! I'm so sorry!"
"Oh? What's this? You want to pick a fight?" One of the guy's comrades asked in a challenging tone.
Cosmo knew where this was going, and stood by Yugi's side. She grabbed a handkerchief in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. "He's really sorry…" She tried to apologize for him, only for her to have her hand swatted by the guy, making the girl wince.
The guy stared down at Yugi and Cosmo, as he was not buying their gesture. "This was a new shirt, it's gonna cost you a lot." It was obvious that the only thing this man wanted was a fight, instead of just money to pay for the damages.
"Hold it right there!" The guy backed up, as he saw a stuffed bear being pressed to his face. It caught him by surprise, but he still had his guard up.
"Hey, go play with your dolls somewhere else!" He warned.
Jounouchi pulled the bear back, as he came face to face with the guy supporting his signature, cocky grin. "Wouldn't you rather play with me instead?" He offered, to which the group of three looked at one another. Slightly hesitant at first, but in the end, they accepted. Much to Jounouchi's annoyance, he couldn't let them walk all over Yugi and Cosmo.
The next thing they both knew, Jounouchi and the group were having a fist fight in a nearby alley. Cosmo and Yugi hid behind a wall, not wanting to see how the match was going. Cosmo suggested they just give him some money to make up for the mess they did on the guy's shirt, but Yugi knew too well that wasn't what he was after. And it wasn't a good idea to get the cops involved. He had way too much experience to know that guys like them won't usually let up unless they get some punches in. Fists collided with faces, as grunts of pain were heard. Yugi could only hope that Jounouchi would be alright. This wasn't his first battle with brute force, yet he wished he could have done something to help. They waited for a while, too scared to turn around the corner to see how the fight was going. After a yelp from the last guy followed by a moment of silence, the sound of footsteps was heard. Yugi gained the courage to peek around the corner, slight fear in his heart as he wondered who was coming. It was filled with relief and joy upon seeing the blond walking over to the two, the bear in his arms and a bruise on his left cheek.
"Jounouchi!" Yugi cheered, pleased to see his friend was alright.
"Damn! Those guys made me lose a lot of time." He complained, not bothered by the wound he had received. He was used to these fights, and at such a point those kinds of wounds were nuisances rather than true pain.
"Are you alright? That mark looks really bad." Cosmo asked, worried as her eyes were on the cheek.
"Don't worry, this is nothing." He reassured her. Although, it wasn't him that got the most damage. The thread of the bear's head started to unravel and become loose, detaching itself from the body as it fell to the ground. The three screamed in horror, seeing the decapitation of the toy. Jounouchi reached down, holding the head of the plush while looking into its eyes. In a crying state, Jounouchi wept at the loss. "I-It's completely broken now! And I spent all that money from Honda to help me buy it."
When Yugi heard that bit, he was reminded of what Honda told him before leaving school. So Jounouchi used the money he worked for from the Beautification Club in order to get that toy. If only he and Cosmo didn't pry into the blond's purchase, this fight wouldn't have cost the life of the plushie. "I'm so sorry, Jounouchi. I promise I'll pay you back! We can go and get another bear." Yugi offered, willing to make things right.
Jounouchi looked over at the two, grabbing their arms. "There's no time for that! Come on!" Without any warning, the blond dragged his friends as they protested in confusion. Despite their unanswered questions, Jounouchi took them to the train station, where he booked a pass for the three of them. Only when they saw the sign of where the ride was heading, did they realize they were heading to the outer edge of Domino City. The three sat together on one side of a car, the rest of it was empty as hardly anyone seemed to want to go there during this time. Especially with the sun setting now, showcasing how late it was getting. As they sat together while being carried to their destination, one of the two finally spoke to ask questions.
"Uh… Jounouchi, where are we going?" Yugi asked his friend while looking up at the blond.
"We're heading to Domino Hospital." He explained, his arms crossed over his chest.
"The hospital?" Cosmo repeated, a bit surprised. "Is someone from your family there?" That was Yugi's first thought as well, since there would be no other reason for Jounouchi to head to such a place. The only person that he could think would be in that hospital was Jounouchi's dad, and given his drinking problem it wouldn't be far off. Then again, given the relationship Jounouchi and his father had, Yugi doubted he would make a big deal about going there, especially with his friends.
Jounouchi sighed, noticing the look the two had, trying to figure out who they were going to meet. He figured he may as well tell them so they wouldn't have to find out when they arrive and make a big deal about it. "It's… my little sister." He admitted. Yugi and Cosmo were stunned for a moment, staring at the blond for a long time as they thought he mispronounced the person's title.
"Little sister?" Yugi repeated. "You have a younger sibling, Jounouchi?"
"Yeah, her name is Shizuka." The tall one explained. "See, six years ago our parents divorced. When that happened, I stayed with dad but my sister went with my mom. However, Shizuka always had problems with her health, so she has been staying at the hospital for a while." This was new information in regards to Jounouchi's backstory. Not even Yugi knew about it, and he wondered if Honda was aware. It was sad, knowing that Shizuka had to be stationed at a hospital for her health, yet it warmed Yugi's heart to see how much Jounouchi was doing to visit her, despite being so far away.
"Is that why you were buying that stuffed bear?" Cosmo asked.
"Yeah, today is her birthday, that was going to be her gift."
Cosmo smiled up at him as she commented. "That's very kind of you to do such a thing for her."
The blond noticed the young girl's eyes, which caused him to have a slight blush as he tried to play it cool. "It's… nothing really special. Honestly, there's nothing much I can do. All I want… is to be able to see Shizuka more often." He admitted.
"I wish you had said something about it earlier, I would have gotten her a gift to make up for it." Yugi stated.
This caused Jounouchi to glare at his male friend while having that flush on his cheeks. "There's no way I was going to tell you that! It's too embarrassing. Besides, if anyone found out, I'd be teased for certain."
"No one would tease you," Cosmo tried to reassure him. "If anything, I think it would make everyone see you in a different light and be more sympathetic."
"Yeah well… I don't want their pity." He turned his head, being stubborn about the ordeal. Despite his rough childhood, he wouldn't be pitied by people he hardly knew. He wasn't about that, he preferred to get things his own way. "So, what are we going to do for her present?" He asked, changing the subject as the three had to put their heads together to at least do something that would put a grin on Shizuka's face.
The sun was setting upon the Domino Hospital which was far out on the edge of the City. Inside of the rooms was a young girl, sitting up in her white bed as the covers were up to her hips. She was a fragile looking girl alright. Her long, auburn hair flowed down her back, supporting long bangs that framed the sides of her face. The middle part of her forehead was covered by a cowlick of four smaller hairs. Her greenish-brown eyes were glossing over some articles she was reading in a magazine. Reading was one of the few pass-times she could do while being bed-ridden. On her bedside table was a pitcher full of iced water and a glass cup filled halfway with the liquid. Along with a stuffed pink kitten, one of her few birthday presents. It was quiet and calm in the room, as she only had herself to keep company.
Her attention and head turned to the door as she heard it open, believing it was one of the nurses giving her medicine as it was around that time. Instead, in the doorway stood a blond with his short friend who were wearing bow ties, smiling wide as they greeted her by saying, "Happy Birthday!" in unison. The young girl was taken aback by the sudden greeting, but she didn't have time to wrap her head around the gesture as she watched Jounouchi and Yugi go to the end of the bed, while they were having a conversation.
"Hey Yugi, you know how everyone has been playing cards lately?" Jounouchi asked.
"Of course." Yugi nodded.
"But there's this crazy old guy who tends to take the game a little too far."
"I see." Yugi noted.
"So one day, he went to show his cards to this senior lady next to him. He said in a smooth tone, 'Will you be my old maid?'"
"Looks like he was a player." Yugi commented.
"A different kind of player!" They both cheered together. The room grew silent with a cold chill in the air, as their gag was done. The girl in the bed stared at them, processing their skit. Though many would have been baffled and unamused by their joke, she covered her mouth as giggles erupted from her lips. It soon turned to laughter as the two boys advanced near her side, with Cosmo coming in behind as she was a spectator of the skit rather than a participant.
"I can't believe she liked that skit… and to think you guys came up with it on the way here." Cosmo joined in with the chuckles.
"Brother always did have a great sense of humor." Shizuka stated, calming herself down.
The blond of the four sighed as he had disappointment on his face. "Sorry Shizuka. I was on my way here with a present, but it got ruined."
Shizuka looked up at her brother, giving a small smile. "It's alright, I'm glad you were able to make it. Mother has been really busy making her rounds about the hospital, so she hasn't had time to visit me today. I was worried I would be by myself, thank you for cheering me up."
Jounouchi's eyes softened as his guilt washed away, seeing that beaming face that belonged to his sister. As long as she was happy, it was good enough for him. Though he still wished he could do more for her, at least he could give her enough. "No problem…" He muttered under his breath.
"But, you look really hurt. Did something happen to you?" Shizuka asked, as she noticed the mark upon her older brother's cheek.
"Oh this? Nah, don't worry about it. It's nothing, really." Jounouchi laughed it off, trying to distract her from the wound. He only now realized that he should have patched it up before coming, since Shizuka hated violence, especially if he was involved. "Anyways, I want you to meet some of my classmates. This is Yugi and Cosmo."
"Nice to meet you." Yugi greeted, smiling at her.
"You as well." Shizuka grinned back. "I'm pretty sure my brother forced you to come here, sorry for the inconvenience."
"Oh no, we wanted to come." Cosmo corrected. "We kind of felt responsible since we were at fault for ruining his birthday present he bought for you. So we wanted to make it up to you both."
"Oh, I see." Shizuka understood.
"Yeah, but it was an accident. All is forgiven." Jounouchi reassured them all.
"Anyways, I like your pajamas." Cosmo noted as she looked at Shizuka. "Pink looks adorable on you."
Shizuka perked up at that statement. "Thanks, mother picked it out for me when I first came here."
"So, will your mother be stopping by soon?" Yugi wondered, as he was curious to meet the mom of Jounouchi and learn what she was like.
Before Shizuka could answer his question, everyone turned to the door as it opened once again. An older woman in pink scrubs walked in, carrying a tray of medicine and food. She had the same colored hair as the girl in the bed, but it was stylized in a shorter and more curly way. Her eyes were the same color of Shizuka's, but instead of them being a round shape, they were more almond design, yet held that kind nature. "Shizuka, I'm back with your dinner and medicine." The woman stopped as she noticed the three students surrounding the patient's bed. "Oh… I didn't expect to see many visitors today."
"Mama! You came back." Shizuka smiled upon seeing the woman. "Brother came here with some of his friends to give me a birthday skit."
"Your mother is your nurse?" Cosmo asked, slightly baffled.
"I'm Ms. Kawai, pleased to meet you all." She greeted the group, only for her eyes to turn towards Jounouchi.
"H-Hi mom…" The blond felt a blush forming on his cheeks, as he was feeling embarrassed just by making eye contact with his mother. He couldn't remember the last time they met like this, face to face. Usually he only ever saw Shizuka when he would visit the hospital.
Even so, a smile was on Ms. Kawai's face as she stared at her son. Though it faded as she noticed something on his features. "That's a nasty mark on your cheek. Where did you get that, Jounouchi?" She asked as she set the tray down while her eyes didn't leave the blond.
"Oh uh… I kind of fell on the way over here." He lied, while trying not to make it seem like a big deal. Last thing he wanted was his mother to scold him during this visit.
Even so, she wasn't going to leave it. "Come with me, I'll take care of it." She told Jounoichi as she made her way to the door, waiting for him.
"Eh? R-Really I'm fine…" He tried to protest.
"It won't kill you to at least get it looked at. I'm not asking as a nurse, I'm telling you as a mother." Her tone became stern as she spoke to him. Jounouchi slightly flinched, but knew that he couldn't refuse. The blond followed the nurse to a breakroom, where he sat down in a chair as she checked his face. Using the supplies on her, she started to tend to him gently as possible yet thorough with the patching. "Hmm… it's a bit swollen, but it hasn't changed color so that's a good sign." She began rubbing some alcohol on the wound, making sure it wouldn't get infected and to keep it from expanding. While she tended to him, Jounouchi looked up at his mother. In a moment, he didn't see her as a nurse but rather a younger version of herself that was full of life. Taking care of her children as that was her job. The woman he was always able to come to, who was once at arm's reach from him.
Ms. Kawai noticed her son staring at her, as he was lost in thought. "Is something wrong?" She asked, worried he was feeling pain.
"Eh?" He blinked as he heard her question. He sighed, making his eyes gaze downward. "I-It's nothing…" He was too embarrassed to speak his mind. Even though he wanted to be honest with her, it was never his strong suit to admit what was on his mind. Especially when it came to his family.
Still, his mother didn't press the matter further. She placed a gauze on his cheek and sighed. "Alright, all done." She placed the tools aside then leaned closed to Jounouchi while raising a brow. "You got these in a fight, didn't you?" That caused her son to sit up straight, his guard caught off by that question. Jounouchi should have realized his mother would know the difference between an accidental wound and an inflicted one. "None of that now, the last thing we want is to worry Shizuka." She stated, turning her back on him while she started to disinfect the equipment.
"S-Sorry…" He apologized after being scolded. Some things never change.
Even though she was occupied with cleaning up, she still spoke to him. "Still… Thank you for showing up." Her words caused Jounouchi to perk up as he stared at her. "I may be Shizuka's nurse, but I still have other patients to tend to. I try to be there for her as much as I can, but things in the hospital haven't been running as smoothly as they should. Which means all of us nurses have to pick up the slack." She sighed after her explanation, indicating how tired and disappointed she was. "I really wanted to do something for her birthday, but we're still waiting for her tests and I still have so many hours to fill in… I thought being a nurse would mean I could keep a close eye on Shizuka, but I can't even do that, let alone be a mother." She rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying to keep her eyes open.
Jounoichi could sense her stress on the other side of the room. He knew his mother had to become a nurse for Shizuka when her health was taking a turn for the worse. At first, it was to ensure she could keep a better eye on her daughter and make sure she was set up in a hospital that would give her plenty of care. Even though the other nurses would help out, she still felt she wasn't doing enough for youngest. That was something Jounouchi and his mother had in common: Making Shizuka their responsibility.
"Mom, if you want I can plan a small party for Shizuka."
The older woman looked over at him, slightly surprised by the offer. "Jounouchi…"
"I'm not gonna tell you that sentimental junk that I've changed. I know you won't believe me even if I tell ya. But, you know I would never do anything to hurt or disappoint Shizuka. If you need any help with her the rest of the week, consider it done. You may be her mother, but I'm her brother. We both need to support her together!" It was a promise to Jounouchi. He was never one to break them, especially if they included his family.
Ms. Kawai looked over at her son, seeing that protective brother that he was when she and her ex-husband were fighting. He would always be there to take care of Shizuka, only thinking about her own needs and wants above his own. Despite his tough and edgy personality, Ms. Kawai knew that he cared deeply for his sister. If he was serious, she may as well give him a chance. "I have to order a cake for her, can I trust you to pick it up for me?"
The blond nodded, patting his chest with his fist. "Leave it to me! And I'll be sure to shower her with attention and gifts."
"Jou…" She whispered her nickname, which was something she hadn't called him in so long. He softened his expression when he heard her say that name, but he had that determined look in his eyes.
"Leave it to me, mom. I promise, I won't let anything happen to her." Ms. Kawai gave him a small smile, showing that she believed in him. Seeing that bright feature on his mothers face made Jounouchi grin back, with slight color to his cheeks. All he wanted was to make his mother proud, while all Ms. Kawai craved was to be with both of her children. Once his wound was tended, the night soon took over the sky. Ms. Kawai told the students that they needed to leave if they would be able to catch the last train to their district. Even though they were sad to leave Shizuka, they promised to visit her the rest of the week for her birthday. The young auburn haired girl was happy, she even waved out the window to the group as they were out of the building.
"Bye-bye!" Yugi waved up at her before the three headed out. They walked down the street to get to the station.
"Your sister and mother are very nice people." Cosmo commented to Jounouchi.
"Yeah, I'll come by and visit them again, if that's okay." Yugi looked up at his friend, wondering if he was fine with him going to see his sister and mother.
Jounouchi looked at the two, nodding. "Please do. I think she could use the company." He stated. As they walked, he held his hand up to where the wound was, sighing as he felt it coming down behind the gauze. All he could think about were the happy faces of his mother and sister. It made him wonder something: Why did it have to be this way?
It was a sunny afternoon in Domino once again, the school day was finished as many students were either heading home or had to stay for after school activities. Shizuka however, was taking classes online. After all, she may have been bed-ridden but that didn't mean she had to slow down her education. It was also another activity she could do, despite her condition. It was also fun being able to keep herself occupied and she had no trouble with doing the work, since the teachers on the computer were able to explain it to her where she fully understood the assignments. After her schooling was done for the day, Ms. Kawai rewarded Shizuka by letting her go outside to wait for Jounouchi to arrive. This way, she could get some fresh air and be out of her room. At the moment, she was sitting on a bench, absorbing the sunlight while waiting for her brother. Shizuka was ecstatic as she wanted to see her sibling and his friends again. She hoped to get to know them better, now that they were part of Jounouchi's life and were making him a better person. She passed the time by looking up at the clouds, taking note of their shapes as they drifted by slowly yet care-free. How she wished she could enjoy days like this.
"Shizuka." The young girl heard the familiar voice, turning her attention to reality as she saw the blond guy before her.
"Brother!" She smiled wide as he finally arrived. "Are you here with your friends again?"
Jounouchi gave a small grin, his brow still raised as he answered that question. "Well, sort of. But there's a few more who want to pay you a visit." He then gestured behind him, where Yugi and Cosmo were, but three new people stood next to them. Anzu, Miho and Honda smiled as they greeted her. The brunette held some flowers in her arms, thanks to Cosmo. "They're my classmates, Yugi kind of blabbed to them and wanted to come see you."
Yugi chuckled out of bashfulness. "Well, it's hard for me to keep secrets. Especially when they involve something that changes a person's perspective."
"He's right," Honda agreed. "If you told me the real reason for picking up those shifts, I would have just handed you the money."
Shizuka tilted her head in confusion. "What money?" She asked, becoming curious and concerned about Jounouchi's financial situation.
The blond instantly slapped a hand on Honda's face, trying to shush him. "Idiot! Don't mention that!" He whispered in an angered tone. The last thing he wanted was for his sister to be worried about his home life. Granted, she knew how bad their father was, but that was one thing he didn't want to be on her mind during her birthday. Honda was confused by the sudden censorship Jounouchi was trying to hide, but he allowed it since he didn't want to be disrespectful to Shizuka.
"My, my. I had no idea my son was so popular." Everyone turned as Ms. Kawai came walking over to them, uniform on her and clipboard in her arms.
"Hello, Ms. Kawai." Yugi greeted the older woman.
"Greetings, Yugi." She waved to him before turning her attention to Jounouchi. "Thank you for stopping by again. I'm sure you must be busy with school and friends."
The blond took his hand off of Honda's mouth, acting humble as he smiled nervously. "Oh no, it's really no trouble. And we got everything settled."
"Really?" Ms. Kawai asked.
"Yup! Yugi will be in charge of entertainment. Cosmo is in charge of decorations. Anzu and Miho will handle the presents, I'll get the cake and Honda will take care of the food." Jounouchi explained.
"My, you really have thought this all through." Ms. Kawai noted with a sly smile. "Sorry to trouble you all, but me and Shizuka are grateful for your effort."
"Hey, I promised a party for my sis, that's what I'm going to deliver. With everyone's help of course." Jounouchi reassured his mother. Ms. Kawai mused at that response, as she looked at the friends her son had made, before turning back to him.
"Well, before you leave, come to my office and I'll change that gauze on your face. We can also discuss the party as well, I want to be involved somehow." She turned over to look at her daughter. "Alright, Shizuka. We better head back inside and get you ready for your labs."
The auburn-haired girl stood up, holding herself as she looked nervous. "I hate those tests, they always poke me with those needles."
Ms. Kawai sighed in sympathy. "I know, but I'll be there to hold your hand so you won't face it alone. And it will only be one needle test, the rest will be x-rays. Afterwards, I'll get you a snack and we can have everyone in your room so you can talk more with them." She promised, encouraging her daughter. The smile on Shizuka's face showed that it worked. "Shizuka is in room 305." Ms. Kawai told everyone as she took her daughter back inside the hospital. The younger girl looked back at the high schoolers, waving to them as she was excited to get to know them. Jounouchi waved back, sighing once they were out of sight.
"I really didn't take you for the family guy, Jounouchi." Anzu admitted.
The blond turned back to the others, mainly eyeing at Anzu. "Why is that so surprising? Just cause I never mentioned it, doesn't mean you have to change your perspective of me! And besides, I can hardly see them anyways."
"Why though?" Cosmo asked, staring up at him with curiosity.
The blond scoffed and averted his eye contact with her. "That's personal! Sides, doesn't matter. It was a long time ago and… and…" He trailed off, while his eyes went back over to the hospital, being lost in thought.
"Jounouchi?" Yugi reached up to hold onto his friend's sleeve, which caused the blond to turn and make eye contact with his friend. Despite not knowing each other for so long, they created a deep bond of trust and honesty. Eventually, he gave in.
"When my parents began to file for divorce and started the separation, my mom already knew she was going to take Shizuka. She was so frail and weak back then, and staying with my father wouldn't help her."
"So she only took your sister and left you alone?" Cosmo asked.
"But you were a kid too! It wasn't fair!" Miho added in distress.
"It wasn't like that." Jounouchi corrected, gaining their attention again. "She did want to take both of us, she didn't want either of us to be separated. But… we both knew Shizuka was really ill at the time. And it cost a lot of money just to keep her healthy. Mom would have enough on her plate taking care of my sis, I didn't want her to have to worry about another child. So… I told her to just take Shizuka… that I could handle myself and to only focus on her. It was me who chose to stay with my dad… not her."
This revelation stunned everyone, making them realize that Jounouchi had the chance to get away from the abusive life of his father this whole time, but he refused it all for the sake of giving his sister a chance of a healthy life. "Jounouchi…" Yugi could only say his name as he looked at the blond.
Jounouchi noticed the looks on his friend's faces, seeing their sympathetic eyes and tears. That was the last thing he wanted to see. "Come on, it isn't that big of a deal. I turned out pretty fine all things considered. Anyways, you guys better head to Shizuka's room. I'll meet you there." He rushed off, not giving them any time to try and speak to him.
"J-Jounouchi!" Yugi called out to him, but he had already left the group. He wasn't sure what was more shocking, the fact he didn't accept the offer and had a better life, or the fact he had been living this life for so long because of that decision.
"To think Jounouchi would give up that kind of life, when he had an out." Miho muttered.
"You heard him, his sister was having health issues even back then. I doubt his mom would be able to keep up with her medicine and take care of Jounouchi while working a single job as a nurse." Honda pointed out. "In the end, it was his choice."
Yugi bit his lip as he still couldn't wrap his head around that story. Part of him actually wished Jounouchi would have taken that offer all those years ago, and spared him the pain of what he had to go through. Then again, if he did, then he and Yugi would have never met and became friends. It seemed like a small price to pay for the both of them if it meant the blond would have been in a safer environment. It made him wonder, if Jounouchi had went with his mother, would he still be the rough and tough guy he claims to be, or someone different?
Jounouchi went back into the hospital, trying to get away from everyone and get a moment or two to clear his head. Revealing such personal information would make anyone feel a bit insecure, especially if it shows their true character. He knew the others would judge him, it was Yugi he was talking about, which was all the more reason he didn't want them involved. But they are here now, and as much as he wanted to avoid these topics, it would come back to haunt him like it always does. He found himself leaning against a wall on the third floor, sighing as he was tempted to wait in Shizuka's room, but didn't want to bring his sister down. He rubbed a hand through his messy hair, trying to let out some breaths to calm his nerves.
"Are you lost, sweetie?" A woman's voice called to him, snapping him out of his thoughts.
Jounouchi didn't realize that voice was familiar, until he turned to his left where it originated. "I'm not lost, just trying to-" he cut himself off, seeing the woman in front of him. Her lavender hair color, with eyes that matched her head and the body of a grown female rather than a student, being in the uniform of the nurse outfit of this hospital. "Eh!? S-Sparkle?!"
A sly smile spread across the woman's face as she looked at the high schooler. "Didn't expect you to be in this hospital. Then again, given your violent history, I shouldn't be surprised." She mocked.
"Hey! I ain't here to be treated for any injuries!" Jounouchi countered.
"Then, why is there a white gauze on your face?" She pointed to his cheek where there was a mark from his fight yesterday. He had been caught, but Jounouchi tried to change the subject.
"I could ask you the same question. Did ya get stuck on hospital duty?"
Sparkle rolled her eyes. "That's not a career for me. It's undercover, if you must know."
A mischievous grin placed itself onto his face. "Well, I have to say it suits you well." He scanned her uniform with hungry eyes.
She reached over to his chin, pulling it up so they looked into each other's faces. "My eyes are up here." She warned him. Jounouchi struggled out of her grip, rubbing his chin before turning back to her. She placed her hands on his hips while they were speaking to one another. "Now, why are you here if not to be treated for your fighting injuries?"
"How'd you even know I got these from a fight? Maybe I just bumped into a wall or fell." Jounouchi questioned. Sparkle didn't say anything to comment on that, she merely glared at him as if to say she knew him too well for that to be a lie. The blond sighed, begrudgingly as he explained. "My sister is in this hospital. She's been living here for a while due to health issues. I'm visiting her with the others because we're planning a birthday party for her."
Sparkle listened, letting her arms rest to her side as she heard that explanation. "So Jounouchi Katsuya has a sibling."
"Yeah? And?"
"And what?" Sparkle raised a brow.
"You… aren't gonna ask me anything else?" Jounouchi wondered.
"I'm not the kind of person to pry into someone's personal life. If you don't want to tell me about your family situation, that's your call. You don't ask me about my life, I won't ask yours."
The blond blinked, hearing her words which caused him to be stunned for a moment. At least someone actually respected privacy and family affairs. "Oh… thanks." It was all he could say.
"So, Yugi and the others are nearby?" Sparkle asked, looking around the hallway to see where they were.
"We uh… got separated cause I needed some time to think." Jounouchi kind of lied. "So, you gonna tell me why you are here on nurse duty?"
"Only if you promise not to tell anyone else. I already got in trouble with Takahasi- Sensei after letting civilians be involved with that Rintama student fiasco." Jounouchi remembered that, being a bit embarrassed as he was part of that situation. He merely nodded, agreeing to her terms. "Alright, I'm trying to expose a certain doctor at this hospital. Dr. Kekeru Goyu. He's been working at this hospital for nearly fifteen years now but there's been a bunch of complaints."
"What kind of complaints? Is he a bad doctor?" Jounouchi asked.
"More like the worst according to many testimonies. They call him 'Doctor Death' because all of his patients have died, in fact, just last week he was in charge of a surgery where the person being operated on did not make it. That brought his total death count up to…" Sparkle pointed out her fingers as she mentally counted. "I'd say 271." Jounouchi's jaw dropped as he heard that number. This guy had that many lost patients? No wonder there were complaints against him. "From what I was told, he has no respect for his job. He doesn't take his work seriously, tends to slack off, give the wrong medication, flirts with the female staff, and all around is just pretty sleazy. The hospital has been getting many complaints from the families of those that died while under the care of this doctor. They want to fire him, but they don't have enough evidence to do so."
"Isn't the death of the patients enough though?" Jounouchi asked, a bit angry by the fact of what he was hearing.
"Ha, you would think." She faked a laugh. "The problem is, there aren't any witnesses that can testify. I asked many of the other staff members, but they kept their lips shut. Apparently Dr. Goyu has a tight hold on the hospital through some corrupt means. If you try to tell the truth, then you lose your job and your license."
"But… he can't do that… Can he?"
"He has some limits, but firing those below him is not one of them. And the hospital can't do anything about it because Goyu would probably threaten to take them down with him. Blaming the hospital for its lack of patient care instead of taking responsibility. That's why I'm here. Many people complained to Takahasi about suing this doctor, so he wanted me to go undercover here and try to find evidence of his unprofessional attitude. Unfortunately, it has to come from him to be valid. Honestly, I feel bad for Domino Hospital. If they allow Dr. Goyu to keep working, there will be more complaints and the hospital could see a lawsuit. But if they try to fire him, no doubt the doctor would end up taking the whole staff and building with him."
"In other words, it's a lose-lose situation." Jounouchi sighed, part of him wanted to find this guy and knock the lights out of him for his actions. "Did you manage to get anything about him?"
"The only thing I've learned is that his favorite pastime is golf. He can only think about that sport. I hear he takes many days off just to go down to a course and play with doctors from bigger hospitals all over Japan. That's probably how he has high power, it's about how professional he is at the game and who he hangs out with at the course while showing them a good time. Honestly, this guy makes American health care look pretty decent."
"I can't believe someone would abuse their status just to keep everyone down. It's no different than Chouno-Sensei!" Jounouchi raised his fist as he was ready to clobber someone.
"If I can get some verbal or concrete proof of his unprofessional manner, then the hospital can fire him without being in danger of a lawsuit from anyone. I had to continuously wear a wire just to be around him in case he slipped. But, I got nothing that is close to dirt on the bastard." Sparkle sighed.
"What exactly does this doctor look like anyways?" Jounouchi questioned, as he wanted to be on the lookout for him should he try anything with his mom and sister.
Sparkle noticed how protective Jounouchi was, but given his family was here, she didn't blame him. "He has purple hair and a beard, wears glasses and has shady blue eyes. If you see him, don't egg him on. The last thing you want is to get on his bad side." The blond seemed to understand this, at least he knew what this doctor looked like. His honey orbs shifted behind Sparkle's frame, seeing his mother walking up the stairs to this floor. Only for his eyes to narrow upon seeing the one who was towering over her at the top of the stairs, reaching over to hold her shoulder. Sparkle saw the way Jounouchi was acting, so she looked behind her to see Ms. Kawai being stopped by the guy she was after: Dr. Goyu. Sparkle took Jounouchi aside and hid behind a corner, the last thing they wanted was to be seen. She couldn't blow her cover, but she wanted to listen in on the conversation. Perhaps this would be what she needed.
"Sensei?" Ms. Kawai looked at the guy, he was just as sleazy as Sparkle described him. The tone of her voice held distaste, indicating her relationship, or lack thereof, with this doctor.
"I finally managed to get a reservation at Hokkaido Dream Course." He raised up his free hand, showing a blue envelope as a sly smile spread on his face. "What do you say? We could leave right now and head there. It will be an exciting weekend for the both of us." Just hearing his words made Jounouchi sick. Especially with what the doctor was insisting, only proving how he had a rep for hitting on his female staff.
Thankfully his mother wasn't easily swayed by his proposition. She shoved him back, glaring at him and his behavior. "I can't believe you! You're just going to leave the patients when they need you?"
"If I keep being busy with them, then I'll never have a day to myself." He pointed out. "Besides, as someone who is the head of the department, I can change up my schedule. And I'm certain you would want a few days off for yourself." He leaned in closer to her, trying to make his move. "Surely you understand how I feel?"
It was at this point that Jounouchi had enough, he wasn't going to let his mother be harassed by such a scumbag any longer. Despite Sparkle's inaudible protests, the blond went over, grabbing the doctor by the shoulder and turning to face him. All of Sparkle's warnings left his mind, this was about defending his own flesh and blood. The said doctor turned to see Jounouchi standing there, his fist ready in case he tried anything. "Take that shameful attitude somewhere else! You dare call yourself a doctor when all you can think about is your own pleasure."
The doctor pushed Jounouchi off, glaring at the kid as he seemed ready to attack without any hesitation. "You bastard child…" The blond readied himself just in case the doctor would throw hands. To his surprise though, it was not him who struck the doctor, but rather his own mom that slapped the man across the face so hard, it knocked his glasses off to the floor.
"Doctor Goyu! Despite our professions in medicine, you are clearly out of my league. Do not come near me or my son ever again. Excuse me!" She bowed politely, though her voice clearly held anger. She walked off in a professional manner, holding onto her dignity. Jounouchi ran past the doctor, hurrying over to his mother.
"Ma! Wait!" The blond called out, trying to catch up with her. They were far enough from the doctor now, and away from Sparkle who witnessed the whole thing. When they were alone in the halls, Ms. Kawai turned to face her son, raising a brow as she still appeared annoyed.
"What do you want, Jounouchi?" She demanded an answer.
The blond took a step back, a bit terrified by her attitude though he didn't blame her. He bowed his head and body, as he started to speak. "I-I'm sorry… I didn't mean to get in between you and that doctor. But when I saw him making advances on you, I was worried you wouldn't be able to handle yourself. I promise to take full responsibility for what happened, so you won't get into trouble."
Ms. Kawai looked at her son, hearing his apology and respectfulness. She was surprised how mature he was being in regards to nearly starting a fight. His mother supported a smile, somewhat happy that he would go so far as to correct mistakes he didn't make. "Don't worry about it, he was an asshole to begin with." She chuckled. Jounouchi looked up at his mother, hearing her utter that swear word was a bit disturbing. But at least it assured him she was not at all interested in such a scummy man. "Now then, let's head to my office and we can change that gauze on your cheek." She started walking off, leading her son to her place of work. He followed, heading back to the office she had and began to take a look at his wound. Thankfully it had gone down, but there was still a mark there. "Looks like this will need another coat of alcohol. Hopefully it should be all healed by the end of the week. Just promise you won't go roughing around."
Jounouchi remained silent, he did not want to promise something he couldn't control. He only let his mother do her job with no complaints. Last thing he wanted was to make things complicated. Once she was finished, she started putting everything away and cleaning the equipment. "Alright, all done."
"T-thanks mom…" Jounouchi said without looking at her. A faint blush on his features as he was kind of embarrassed. This was the second time his mother had fixed him up, and yet he could do nothing for her in return. It was like his childhood all over again. "I uh… think I better head out." Jounouchi said, getting up from his chair.
Ms. Kawai seemed surprised. "You aren't going to stay? I know it's late, but if you need a ride home…"
Jounouchi quickly interjected at her suggestion. "Nah I have a lot to do. Still got to order the cake and plan out Shizuka's party." That was a lie, but he didn't want to inconvenience her any further after letting his anger get to him. "So… better get going. Tell Shizuka sorry for taking off, I'll visit you and her tomorrow…" He promised, heading to the door so he could quickly make his exit. Just as he opened it, and his hand was on the railing, did he hear his mother's voice speak up.
"Jounouchi… Thank you for sticking up for me back there." Hearing those words made the blond stop in his movements. He turned back to face her, seeing that bright smile upon her face. It actually made him feel like he accomplished something and was worth the consequences. The student gave a grin of his own, nodding to his mother before heading out. At least he managed to do something for her, for once.
The next day was Friday, and the group decided to throw the birthday party for Shizuka tomorrow. Everyone had their part to play in getting the celebration set up. Miho and Anzu were in charge of gathering the gifts. Jounouchi made a list of things Shizuka was interested in, so they had something to go off of. Cosmo was in charge of decorations such as the banners, balloons and even flowers. Honda managed to ask his mother for help in making the food. Mrs. Hiroto suggested they hand make the stuff rather than just get it from the store, that way if Shizuka had any food restrictions, they would know what was in the feast. Yugi already had a few games they could play for entertainment, so all that was left was getting the cake. Jounouchi headed to the hospital, wanting to speak to his mother about how the party would go. Yugi decided to accompany him, since his job for the party was completed.
"Thanks for coming with me Yugi, sorry to trouble you." Jounouchi told his friend as they walked through the doors of the hospital to find Ms. Kawai. They agreed to wait in Shizuka's room, since she tended to go there.
"I want to help as much as I can. Plus, it will be nice to speak with Shizuka again." Yugi smiled.
"She'll be happy to see you." Jounouchi noted. His eyes wandered off in thought, as his memory of yesterday's events played in his mind.
Yugi noticed this and was worried. "Is this about that doctor?" Jounouchi had told his friend about what happened, the information Sparkle gave to the blond about her undercover mission. He only told Yugi, since the short student was especially close with the lavender haired girl.
Jounouchi nodded upon hearing that question. "I wish I had gotten it on tape though… would have helped Sparkle get him out of here…" The blond sighed in annoyance.
"At least you and your mom managed to get out of that situation." Yugi pointed out, trying to be positive. "And this means you can be a witness to his behavior!" That did make Jounouchi smile, and helped him feel better. He was a witness to what happened, so perhaps that would be a leverage against the doctor.
"Big brother!" The two boys looked up upon hearing the distressed voice of Jounouchi's sister. She rushed over to them, out of breath with a pale expression.
"Shizuka? What are you doing out of bed? Did something happen?" Jounocuhi asked, worried about his sister. But it was someone else he should have been concerned about.
"Mother… mom was forced to leave the hospital!" When he heard that, Jounouchi's blood ran cold. She was fired?! Him and Yugi looked at one another, confused before turning back to the younger sibling.
"W-what do you mean? Shizuka, what happened?" He held his sister by the shoulders, trying to calm her, and himself, down.
The auburn haired girl was shaking a bit, but did her best to explain. "I...I don't know all the details. B-but from what I was told, Mom was tasked with trying to get something for a surgery due to doctors orders. But when she left, she instead was taking her time being with someone else, which caused the person in surgery their life."
"When was this?" Jounouchi demanded to know. That sinking feeling in his gut rising as he didn't like where this was going.
Shizuka looked at her brother, trying to think. "S-sometime last night… during your visit here…"
Jounouchi's eyes narrowed, anger taking over as he knew what was going on. "I'll be right back." He grumbled, walking away. Despite their protests, Shizuka and Yugi could only watch him stomp his way to where Dr. Goyu's office was. It took him a bit of direction-following, but once he got there, he would hold nothing back. After finding the room, he burst open the door where he saw the man sitting at his desk, polishing a golf club in his hand. He wasn't paying any attention to Jounouchi, but he would make the doctor notice him.
"What do you want?" He asked.
Jounouchi really hated the guy. He approached his desk, slamming his hands on the surface. "You bastard! You fired my mom just because she didn't want to go out with you!"
The doctor looked up at the student, a sly smile on his face. "What was that? Do you hear yourself?" He didn't sound innocent, he knew he was guilty, he was just playing coy. "You have no proof of it anyways, just leave this to the adults."
"Shut up, you scum! You embarrassed and harassed my mother! She was taking care of me when you tried hitting on her! There was no patient in the surgery! I know the truth! I'll testify against you, and you can kiss your job goodbye for what you have done!" Jounouchi was not going to give him a chance. This man was going to pay for what he had done, now that it was personal to the blond.
Dr. Goyu remained calm, still wiping down the base of his club as he listened to the threats that were given to him. "If you end up doing that, your little sister may not stay in the hospital." Jounouchi's features froze as he heard that. Shizuka? What was he talking about? He wasn't serious, was he? The smile returned on Goyu's face as he kept explaining. "Even if what you say could ruin my reputation, I'll have enough time to discharge another patient. And considering your sister is still under observation and recovery, removing her during that time would end up harming her even more."
As much as he hated to admit it, the doctor was right. Even if Jounouchi confessed and managed to get this guy canned for his unprofessional behavior, no matter how slim there could be a possibility that Dr. Goyu would kick Shizuka out. Jounouchi couldn't risk his sister waiting to be transferred, besides this was the best hospital in all of Domino with the most up to date equipment that has been keeping her stable. Even if she could hold out now, neither Jounouchi nor Ms. Kawai could risk waiting for her to be transferred with a possibility of her falling ill anytime. Dr. Goyu stopped polishing his golf club, pointing it at Jounouchi to mock him even further. "So, what will you do? Will you tell the truth if it means you get your sister out of the hospital?"
Jounouchi kept his glare on the man, but knew that the doctor had too much power to the point he didn't care who he used it against. He didn't like to help anyone, he was less than scum, he was a pile of shit! Instead of giving a verbal answer, he turned his back and rushed out of the room. His feet made him run, while he attempted to hold back the tears. No matter what he would do, either one of his family members would end up paying a price. He didn't even stop as he passed by Yugi, who followed him down the halls, out of the hospital and towards the edge of the courtyard, trying to isolate himself. He stood in front of a tree, punching the trunk with his fists. It hurt, but it wasn't the worst pain he felt. What he was feeling was beyond agonizing. He had to get his frustration out, even if it wouldn't solve the dilemma.
"Jounouchi?" Yugi watched from a few feet away, seeing how upset his friend was.
"Yugi… I… I can't…" In his voice was pain and suffering, he was at war with his moral compass. "If I don't keep my mouth shut, Shizuka will pay the price. But if I do, mom will be humiliated! How can I possibly choose?" He was broken, unable to fully grasp what was right in front of him. No matter what happened, there would be consequences. He didn't want to be responsible for something bad happening to either his mother or sister. It was infuriating, knowing you could do something but in doing so, would end up making things worse for the one you love.
"Jounouchi…" Yugi trailed off. He could feel the rage inside of his friend from here. He knew that it was that doctor that was to blame for all of this, Yugi was certain. He threatened Jounouchi, his mother and now even his younger sister. They didn't do anything wrong, Ms. Kawai was doing her job and taking care of the patients when he was not. The three of them were suffering, and yet there was nothing that they could do. He was powerless, for the first time in his life, Jounouchi could do nothing. All of his life he fought his way to survive, but now that others were in the way, how could he fight when he could possibly lose something?
When Yugi looked back at his friend, he gasped as he could see a stray tear rolling down the blond's cheek. Jounouchi was crying?! Yugi never saw Jounouchi cry before, not like this. He really was broken. He was like this because of the doctor… that doctor was the one to blame for all of this. He had to go, no matter what. It was all Yugi could think about as the Millenium Puzzle around his neck glowed. He already had his target in mind, all that was left was to take him down.
Sparkle walked around the courtyard, heading to the entrance of the hospital as she was about to head through the doors. The sun was beginning to set as she was going undercover once more. She hoped today was the day she could finally get some evidence against Dr. Goyu and kick his ass to the curb. Before she could open the doors, she felt someone was behind her.
"Sparkle." The lavender haired girl turned her head, supporting a smile to see 'Yugi' approaching with confident eyes and a determined attitude. She knew one thing, if this 'Yugi' was awake, things were going to get serious.
"Should have figured you would be here… I saw what happened with Jounouchi, his mother and Dr. Goyu. I'm sorry she got fired, but it only shows how little respect he has for his people and career." Sparkle noted, her arms crossed over her nurse outfit.
"Sparkle, let me be the one to take down Dr. Goyu…" His request made her raise a brow, indicating she wanted more information before she would come to a decision. "He harassed Jounouchi's mother, firing her for refusing him. And when Jounouchi wanted to protest against him, he threatened to remove his sister from the hospital."
"I warned Jounouchi not to get on his bad side." Sparkle stated. "But if I was in his situation, I would have done the same."
'Yugi' stepped closer, his glare could have been mistaken for threatening her, but Sparkle knew better. "I need to do this! For Jounoichi and his family. I saw him at his low point, and it's something I don't want him to suffer through."
Sparkle placed her hands on his hips, she already knew what he planned on doing. Even though she couldn't explain it, she saw a similar pattern with this before. She reached into her back pocket, taking out a device with a few buttons and cassette holder within, handing it over to 'Yugi'. "I shouldn't be letting civilians get involved in these kinds of cases, but I do owe you for bringing in the Domino Arsonist from the Amusement Park a while back. And as long as you manage to get the verbal evidence we need to close the case, I think the clients will be happy either way. Of course, I'll have to stay out of the building. As long as I'm not there, what happens behind my back is fair game." 'Yugi' smiled, thanking Sparkle for her understanding. "I'll give you thirty minutes." She added. "You have until then to do what you want, then I come in."
Thirty minutes was too generous, but 'Yugi' agreed nonetheless. With the device in hand, he made his way to his destination. Dr. Goyu was still in his office, despite how late it was. He was polishing his last golf club while speaking on the phone. "Yeah, I'll be participating in the competition this week." He told the person on the other end. "I have my paid time off noticed. As for my patients, they will just have to wait. I can't put them first, not with this tournament coming up." He checked over his club, seeing how much it was shining now. "Huh? What about the nurse? I ended up firing her. She refused me, which was her loss. It's only natural that she should suffer the consequences for her actions. Or should I say, lack of." He chuckled on the phone as he practically admitted the truth.
"Huh? What about the nurse?" Dr. Goyu gasped as he suddenly heard his own voice repeating what he had just said. That wasn't him that was talking. He stopped communicating on the phone, listening to where his echo was coming from. "I ended up firing her. She refused me, which was her loss. It's only natural that she should suffer the consequences for her actions. Or should I say, lack of." His cold gaze shifted over to the door of his office, where it was opened ajar, and being leaned against by a young boy who held a small box in his hand. "You bastard! You were listening in on a private conversation!?" Dr. Goyu got up from his chair, wondering who the hell would dare to be in his office without his permission.
"I heard everything, Doctor." 'Yugi' stated, turning to face the man with a smile of his own. "And unless you don't want this getting out, it's game time Dr. Goyu." The purple haired medic stared at the high schooler, as he was confused by what he meant. He blamed himself for being sloppy for admitting his personal affairs over his profession. Now this teen had some hard evidence of his true behavior. He could threaten this person, but he didn't know anything about him to have any leverage on him. He didn't even know who this kid was, despite him appearing in the hospital the last few days. At this point, Dr. Goyu had no choice but to play along with the brat in order to destroy that tape before it was made public.
"Fine, what is it you want to play?!" He demanded to know. 'Yugi' smiled as he led the Doctor out into the hallway, the lights turning on despite it being bedtime for many patients. There were no sign of any nurses either, despite it being the night shift. It was as if… they were the only ones here.
"We're going to play a sport you are all too familiar with: golf."
Dr. Goyu held his club tightly, raising an eyebrow at the young man. Was he serious? This was the game he was going to play? "You want to play golf in this place?" He didn't sound disappointed, despite his lack of medical practice, he was pretty good in the department of said sport. Which meant this should be to his advantage.
'Yugi' held up two golf balls, one with a pink capital G on it and the other with his signature eye that was etched into the Puzzle around his neck. That cocky smile never leaving his face as he explained the rules. "It is your specialty, isn't that right, doctor? We'll be using these plastic balls, marked with our own signatures. The winner of the game will keep the tape recorder and do what they want with it." 'Yugi' explained. The doctor listened, something about this didn't seem right, but he had to comply if it meant keeping his reputation somewhat clean. Besides, he was confident in his own hobby. "I'll even let you decide where you want the balls to go." He added.
Dr. Goyu smiled. "Fine by me. In that case, the end will be the center of the Nurse's infirmary that's below us." He decided. It was a bit far down but he should be able to get the ball down there in less than six strokes. The doctor held up the driver club that he brought with him. "So, do you need a club? I can lend you a spare." He offered, going along with this ruse.
'Yugi' walked over to the doctor, as if he was willing to take the offer. Dr. Goyu was startled as 'Yugi' reached out and grabbed the stethoscope that was around his neck. This caused the older man to be somewhat confused by the action. "I'll be using this." 'Yugi' said as he held onto the tool.
This action made the doctor laugh, amused by this kid's antics. "Looks like the outcome of this match has already been decided. After all, my ability to golf is equal to that of a pro." He assured himself, while placing the club in his dominant hand. This did not steer off 'Yugi', who only looked at the older man, knowing it would be this kind of cockyness that would make him lose. "Let me show you my skills." Dr. Goyu would be going first, being next to his own ball. He lined up the head of his club and steadied his hips. With the power of his arms, he swung the club and made the ball fly down the hallway which made it land a few meters away from them.
"Nice shot." 'Yugi' commented. Dr. Goyu smiled not only from the comment, but also for his own skills. "Well then, it's my turn." He lowered himself to the ground, using the tool like a slingshot as he stretched out the rubber and aimed the ball in his eyesight. He had to be very precise, though he already knew where he was going to send it. The doctor watched him with a bit of nervousness as he used the tool he had to make the ball go flying, sending it bouncing off the walls, making it go into a nearby room, out of bounds from the course.
Dr. Goyu laughed hysterically as he watched the failed attempt 'Yugi' did with playing golf. "Looks like it's out of bounds." Dr. Goyu told him. "And yet I still move ahead. Doubt you'll be able to catch up at this pace." He kept chuckling as he walked further down the hallway, going to his ball so he could keep going. 'Yugi' however, still smiled with his own confidence. The Doctor kept hitting his ball a few more times, making it roll down the stairs as he was not too far behind. "This is like a breeze." He said to himself. Dr. Goyu looked back, noticing that 'Yugi' was no longer behind him. "Some challenge this turned out to be. Looks like I was worried for nothing." He smiled, hitting his ball for a fourth time as it was just about near its goal. The ball was just shy a few feet from the nurses office, one more light tap and it would be inside of the room. "Looks like it's all over now." Dr. Goyu believed, steadying himself as he was ready to hit the sphere into the finish line.
Just as he was about to tap with his club, his ears picked up a distinct sound nearby. He turned his head, looking over where he saw the other golf ball rolling ever so slowly through a doorway, passed him and his own ball and went right into the doorframe. "What the?!" Dr. Goyu was shaken, his whole body froze as he watched the rival's ball manage to get through the nurses office before he could. How did he do that? Did he take another route he didn't know about?!
"This hospital sure has a very useful system." Dr. Goyu turned around, seeing 'Yugi' standing there with a smug look on his face. "That room that I hit the ball into, turns out it was able to go through a certain slide. There was a mail slot inside that room where I shot the ball."
"T-the nurses center's mail drop?!" Dr. Goyu couldn't believe it! He managed to use that in order to get him farther down here. Something he wasn't aware of!
"That means, I had a hole-in-one. I win." 'Yugi' declared, glaring at Dr. Goyu. "You may be an expert on the golf course, but it seems you don't know your way around your own hospital." He mocked.
Dr. Goyu, despite losing, would not be mocked or have his career ruined. "You bastard!" He ended up raising his golf club as he went closer to 'Yugi'. "Give me back that tape!" He demanded, aiming to swing at 'Yugi'. He wanted to keep him silent no matter what, even if he had to actually get blood on his hands and his club. The student dodged in the nick of time, having Dr. Goyu break the head of his club as it fell off the shaft, making him lose balance as the medic tripped over and fell to the ground. Despite his loss, he did not walk away and take the consequences, which meant he would deal with his own arrogance and pride for those he had hurt, including Jounouchi's family.
"The door of darkness has opened." 'Yugi' declared. The doctor looked up, he didn't know what he meant but he didn't care. He was done playing these games. Even though he was the one that had lost. Eerie noises could be heard behind Dr. Goyu, which caused him to turn around. In a gasp of horror, he watched the doors to the operating room behind him being opened, as corpses staggered through. They were his patients, the ones he let die because he never focused on his work. They started out in dozens, then soon turned into hundreds as they surrounded the man. The ghoulish faces and rotten skin pushed themselves against him, grabbing hold with their bony hands as they pulled him down with their icy grips. Dr. Goyu screamed in terror, begging for them to stop but his cries went unanswered. They were going to give him the same fate he bestowed upon them. Some even went as far to mock him by calling him doctor, but he wasn't one. He never was a doctor.
'Yugi' knew this was a mere illusion Dr. Goyu was suffering, but the effects were so realistic that it fooled the man into believing he was being tortured by his victims. "Let this be a lesson… never let your hobbies interfere with your work. Otherwise, it will drag you down." With that advice, he walked away from the punishment to take hold of Dr. Goyu. His screams were the indication that he was succumbing to the sins he committed.
As this was happening, Jounouchi was in Shizuka's room. He was watching over her and helping her to get settled for the night. "How are you feeling?" He asked his sister, as his voice was distant. He didn't sound like he was in reality, but he still tried to persevere. "Do you need anything, I'll get you whatever you want. Just say the word." It was an empty promise. If Jounouchi could have done anything for her, then she wouldn't be in this hospital. It only showed how powerless he truly was.
Shizuka looked up at her brother. "Jounouchi… mom told me about what happened with Dr. Goyu yesterday." Shizuka admitted. This caused the blond to jump in his seat, but his little sister explained. "He had been attempting to date her for the past few weeks, but she always rejected him. I told her we could always go to a different hospital if it made her uncomfortable, but she kept being brave. She had that smile on her face, showing she was willing to suffer for the sake of others. The same one you always have." Shizuka noted. It was the one thing that Jounouchi ever got from his mother, the need to put on a brave face to protect the ones he cared for. If only he had done that more before he had met Yugi and the others. "Brother… mom said she was planning on leaving the city tonight." Hearing that snapped Jounouchi out of his thoughts, as he stared at her for more information. "If you hurry to the station, you can meet up with her. She wanted to see you one more time before she left."
"Shizuka…" Jounouchi whispered, doubting himself for a minute as his mind replayed the past of his childhood. The mistakes he made, the things left unsaid and the actions not done.
"I don't know what happened between the two of you or where you stand… but you shouldn't feel guilty about what happened. You don't deserve to carry that burden!" The auburn haired girl cried, as she was the one putting on a brave smile. She was right, Jounouchi couldn't live in the past forever. He would never be able to forgive himself if he stood where he always stayed. With her advice, Jounouchi stood up and let his body take him to his destination. He left Shizuka's room, thanking her for the encouragement. His feet were in control as he ran out of the hospital, down the street and made his way to the train station. He hoped he would make it in time, which was why he had to pick up the pace. He needed to speak to his mom, he had to see her off. He wasn't going to burn that bridge again.
The station was just in sight, as he began to scan for his mother. Thankfully, he was able to find her carrying two large suitcases and a purse. She was near the gate, no longer in her nurse uniform, but he recognized her face and hair anywhere. "Mother!" Jounouchi called out just as he was by her side.
Ms. Kawai turned her head, seeing her son run up to her, panting as he was catching his breath after running many miles. "Jounouchi? What are you doing here?" She asked.
After regaining some air in his lungs, he looked up at her and tried to speak. "Mom… please… please come back to the hospital." He begged. "I will prove… that it wasn't your fault! You don't have to be… humiliated like that! I know I haven't… always been the most reliable… and I know there could be some risks. But… I don't care! You don't deserve what happened! You're a great nurse and a wonderful mother to Shizuka! I… I…" He began to trail off, letting out all of his emotions at once. It was something he wasn't good at, but he was not going to hold back. He looked up at her, his eyes closed as he balled his hands into fists, shouting at the top of his lungs. "I love you, mom! I always have and I always will!" As corny as it sounded, it was all he could say, and it was the truth. He stood there, waiting for her response. Even though he felt like an idiot confessing to his own mother, at least for once he was honest with her.
Ms. Kawai was stunned, but she soon placed a gentle smile on her face. Her hands went to his shoulders and looked into Jounouchi's doe eyes. "Thank you. Jounouchi." She began, as her face radiated that motherly warmth. "But the truth is, I was planning on leaving that hospital for quite some time." The high schooler blinked, baffled by her confession. "You see, a friend of mine who is another nurse, said that they have an opening at her hospital which is a few cities away. They have better equipment and have a spot for Shizuka to move into. I've been meaning to tell you and her but… I saw how happy she was seeing you. And when you were planning her party I didn't want to bring it up then." The smile slowly faded as she looked down, guilt radiating in her eyes. "I didn't want to make the atmosphere depressing."
"Mom…" Jounouchi whispered, as it was all he could do upon hearing this confession.
"I know we haven't had the strongest relationship these past years. I haven't been in contact and I've been spending so much time with Shizuka. There are days when I think back to that event… when we had to leave you behind with that… that…" She trailed off, not being able to come up with a title for Jounouchi's father. "I never forgave myself for leaving you back there. If I could do it over, I would have taken you. I wouldn't have made you grow up in such an unstable environment where you would have to fight just to survive. I don't blame you for thinking I was a bad mother to you… after all, I was."
"You were never a bad mom!" Jounouchi interjected. Ms. Kawai jumped from his sudden voice change, as he looked at her. "It was my choice to stay with dad because I knew how much Shizuka needed you more! I never blamed you for abandoning me, I never felt that way. All I ever thought about was how great you were to Shizuka and I hoped she was getting the care and love she needed. I know you're a great mom, and a wonderful nurse. She was lucky to have you be there for her when you could. I'm the one that should feel ashamed…" He admitted, doing his best not to let the tears fall as he talked with her. "I haven't really changed at all. I became so hell bent on beating and fighting that I almost scared Shizuka. I know it's how I've been taught to survive but… I really fell through the cracks. I tried to remain strong but it's hard every day. I'm sorry… I wasn't the son you wanted me to be."
Ms. Kawai moved her hands over, cupping Jounouchi's cheek as she smiled still. "You could never disappoint me. The way you still care for your sister, the friends you've made… All I ever wanted was for you to not feel alone and still be kind. I'm glad that side of you is still there. Maybe you are rough around the edges, but I love those flaws about you. I'm glad you've managed to better yourself. It's made me less worried."
Now Jounouchi couldn't help but let a few stray tears roll down his cheeks. His mother's approval comforted him more than he had been in so long. It made him happy that he didn't disappoint her even after all of these years. The train began to roar, as it was moving slowly into the station. "That's my cue. It will take me a while to get Shizuka set up at the place. We're hoping to move her by the end of the month."
"I hope she really likes it." Jounouchi commented, wondering how Shizuka will adapt to the new setting. Of course, that meant that seeing his sister and mother would be more difficult as it cost more to head to other cities instead of outer Domino. But, if it meant that they could be happy, it was a sacrifice he wanted them to make. Ms. Kawai grabbed her bags, heading to the gate to pass by. When she got there, she stopped as her grip on the handles tightened. "Mom?" Jounouchi wondered what was wrong. The older woman then turned, rushing and embracing the blond in a tight hug. It caught him off guard, but he didn't back away.
"Please… please keep looking after yourself…" Ms. Kawai begged.
Jounouchi gripped onto his mother, returning the hug as he continued to let the tears cry. "I promise…" He assured her. He was not going to let his mom or his sister down anytime soon. They were all he had left of his family, and he wanted to cherish them.
Ms. Kawai pulled back, smiling as she herself started to tear up. "Take care of yourself and her…" She told him. Finally, she managed to carry herself through the gate. Jounouchi watched her go, seeing her board the train and heading off to start a new life without him. Just like those years ago. But once again, it was a choice he made. He didn't want to leave Domino, now that he had an actual reason to stay. He had his friends to hang out with and Shizuka, who would still be staying at the Domino Hospital until her mom could get her set up at the new location. Even though Jounouchi was left behind, he didn't feel alone at all.
On that Saturday afternoon, Jounoichi was going through the streets on his own as he was heading back to the Hospital. He carried a box which contained the cake for Shizuka's party. Everyone else should be there by now setting up for the celebration. They wanted to spend as much time with Shizuka after school and before night fell. Thankfully tomorrow was Sunday so they didn't have to be home until much later. Once Jounouchi got there, they would be able to get the party started.
Eventually, he made it to Domino Hospital, heading inside as he panted. "Geez, it would have been easier if I had a bike to carry this cake." Jounouchi complained. "Note to self, start saving up for some wheels." He walked through the entrance and into the lobby so he could check in. The nurse at the front desk greeted him and asked him to tell Shizuka happy birthday. The blond agreed, as he was heading to the elevator just to save some time.
As he was about to head into the halls, he saw Sparkle walking over with her uniform in her arms. "Back again at the hospital, I see." She smiled upon greeting Jounouchi.
"Hey Sparks…" He greeted her with a nickname. "Shizuka's party is today. I'm here to deliver the cake.
"At least despite being in the hospital, she can have a normal day." Sparkle noted.
"You wanna come join us. I think she'd love to meet you." Jounouchi offered.
"I think I can afford to stop by for a while. I just have to drop off my uniform first, now that the Goyu case has been closed."
Hearing the doctor's name peeked Jounouchi's interest. "So, he got fired?"
"He's been taken into custody today. Apparently he was on a phone with another doctor last night for an upcoming golf tournament. He admitted to firing a certain nurse because she refused to go out with him." It didn't take a genius to know that Sparkle was referring to Jounouchi's mother. She went on with her explanation. "There were also some recordings of how he preferred to go golfing and ending up putting aside surgery dates just to attend his courses. It was all recorded on that tape I got. This morning he was found in the halls muttering some strange nonsense, like he was out of it. The tape was playing over and over about his unprofessional behavior. Needless to say, he won't be performing anything anytime soon."
A smile spread on Jounouchi's face, happy to hear some good news and thanked karma for biting that guy in the ass. "So, he's really gone?"
"Looks like it. The hospital will be relieved since they don't have to deal with him, and the victim's kin will have some justice. Though I don't think he'll be getting a trial."
"Why's that?" Jounouchi wondered, as he was hesitant about that information but Sparkle explained further.
"Apparently, when they found him this morning, he was having hallucinations of his former patients that died while under his care. They were attacking him and blamed him for their deaths."
"Are you serious?" Jounouchi questioned, shuddering a bit upon hearing that information.
"So far, they've ruled it out as some sort of psychosis. He's been taken to a mental facility for further tests. Regardless, there's no chance of him ever going back to the medical field, even if he does get better. Rumor has it some of the other doctors who played golf with him are throwing him under the bus. Probably to keep their own names clean, but that makes our job easier so I won't complain."
"What do you suppose caused him to snap?" Jounouchi questioned. Sparkle had her suspicion, but wanted to keep it to herself as she didn't have any proof. Plus, she doubted Jounouchi would have understood.
"Not sure… but it's not my problem anymore." Sparkle shrugged. Jounouchi didn't argue with that.
"Good riddance, I say. Bastard deserves it after what he did. Abusing his power like that, firing people that didn't like his hobbies. Guy shouldn't even be allowed to step foot in here ever again."
Sparkle mused at his anger, but it was justifiable. "Anyways, I'll meet you up in Shizuka's room once I take care of a few things. Make sure you save me a slice of that cake." Sparkle told the blond, heading over to the front desk. Jounouchi agreed, then took the elevator. He made it to the third floor and went over to where the room was. Upon opening the door, Jounouchi smiled as he held up the package. "Shizuka! I got the cake!" Jounouchi called out as he entered the room.
Everyone turned to see the last guest arrive. The decorations, food and games were already set up. Streamers, flowers and balloons filled the room, a table full of drinks and snacks rested against one of the walls. Yugi set up the games on another table, as he smiled over to see his friend. "You made it!"
"About time! What took you so long?" Anzu questioned.
"Hey, I had to get out of school, go to the cake shop, pick it up and bring it here." Jounouchi pointed out. "Anyways, I'm here now and we can celebrate and party until the moon comes up!" The others couldn't help but agreed, cheering as the auburn haired girl giggled in her bed.
"Thank you, big brother. You really outdid yourself. I'm glad you were able to get me my present."
Jounouchi blinked as he looked at his sister confused. "But, I still haven't gotten you anything though."
Shizuka shook her head as she explained. "My one birthday wish… was to be able to spend time with you."
Hearing that made Jounouchi's eyes waver, causing him to smile at his sister. He knew she wouldn't be in the city for too much longer, and even though he still had to tell her she would be moving out of the hospital, he wanted today to be all about her. She deserved that much at least.
"Well look at this, despite all those rough edges, Jounouchi is a softie deep down!" Honda mocked.
The blond glared at him as he was making fun of this sweet moment. "Don't poke fun at me! At least when I do something nice for a girl, she acknowledges it!" He points out.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I think you know!" The two began to get into a bit of a verbal fight, making the others witnesses.
"They're seriously fighting during a party? Can't they shut it off for one day?" Anzu complained.
"Should we stop them?" Cosmo asked.
Shizuka was the one giggling. "Actually, I kind of want to see where this goes. I'm rooting for Jounouchi!" She declared. Everyone else was a bit disturbed she would allow this fight on her birthday. Yet she seemed pretty pleased to enjoy the show.
"It seems like it will be a close call." Yugi commented as the group watched Jounouchi and Honda bicker like an old married couple.
