CHAPTER 42- HAPPY EASTER

"Cory", shouted Topanga from the living room. "We have to go! Please grab the eggs and the Easter baskets. We are going to be late!" The Matthews' apartment was in chaos.

"I'm coming!" Cory shouted back, running into the living rooms with his arms full of Easter baskets, eggs, and decorations. Topanga rolled her eyes, irritated.

"Can we move a little faster, please? Your parents are meeting us at the park in-" Topanga paused to check her watch. "-10 minutes. And we still have to make it across town."

Auggie was jumping up and down with excitement, holding Riley's hand, waiting to leave the apartment.

"Easter, Easter, Easter!" he exclaimed, an ear to ear grin plastered across his face. Riley laughed.

"Calm down, silly bunny!" she said, pulling him in for a hug. Auggie hugged her burgeoning belly bump, and giggled when the baby inside moved and kicked him.

Finally, the family made it out of the house and into the waiting car outside. After Cory had placed their items in trunk, he took a seat in the car, next to his wife and children.

"Central Park, please." Topanga said to the driver, who began the 20 minute drive to the park.

"We're here." The driver said, as Cory fished the fare and tip out of his wallet. The family piled out of the car, and Auggie instantly made a beeline to his waiting grandparents.

"Grandma, Grandpa! Happy Easter!" Auggie shouted, as he ran into the arms of Amy.

"Happy Easter, Auggie bug!" Amy and Alan exclaimed, covering him with kisses. Making her way to her grandparents, Riley slowly waddled with one hand on her aching back and the other on her 8 month baby belly. She paused briefly to catch her breath, finally finding her way to her waiting grandfather's arms.

"Riley," he said softly, "how have you been?" He gestured to her belly, smiling. Riley smiled back, sighing.

"Okay, I guess." She replied, as she hugged her grandmother. "Just feeling huge." Alan smiled again.

"Yeah, that tends to happen when you are growing a human. But at least you only have about 4 or 5 weeks left, right?"

Riley nodded, rubbing her belly. "Yeah, almost there, Grandpa. She will be here soon."

"Hey," Topanga shouted. "Look who I found." Riley looked toward her mother and father. Walking next to her parents were Josh and Maya, with Gabriel in a Baby Bjorn. Riley's face lit up as she walked to meet Maya.

"Peaches!" Riley shouted.

"Riles!" Maya shouted back, quickening her steps, but still careful not to jostle baby Gabriel too much. Riley gave Maya a gentle hug, stroking Gabriels soft head of baby hair, smiling.

"I am so glad you came today. Happy Easter!" Riley exclaimed.

"I wouldn't have missed it, Riley." Maya replied. "And Happy Easter to you too."

"When can we find the eggs, Mom?" Auggie whined, tugging at Topangas blouse. She smiled down at him, tousling his hair.

"Daddy and Grandpa are almost done hiding the eggs and then you can go find them." She explained. "Just a few more minutes." Auggie sighed, impatiently.

Cory shouted from across the park. "Okay, send him over!" Before the last words were out of Cory's mouth, Auggie excitedly shot across the park with his empty basket.

While Auggie and some other kids at the park hunted for Easter eggs, the rest of the family sat on the grass and enjoyed a picnic.

When all of the eggs had been found and Auggie was getting cranky and tired, the family decided to go home. As they made their way to the once again waiting car, Riley said her goodbyes to Maya.

"I'll call you when I get home. I love you, Peaches." Riley gave a Maya a goodbye hug and slowly walked toward the waiting car.

"I love you, too, Riles." Maya replied, watching her walk away.

As Riley approached the street to get into the car with her family, she paused briefly to catch her breath again. Looking both ways, she stepped off the curb to cross. Looking back at Maya one last time, she didn't see the car speeding toward her, not paying attention.

Suddenly, there was the sound of screeching tires and breaking glass.

Riley felt the impact and felt herself flying through the air. From there, all went black.
