"I don't get it," James deadpanned, for more than likely the fifth time, his quill spun around his hand as he scratched a spot behind his head with the other.
Severus sighed, for likely the same amount of times, as he flicked through a page back. The irritated look to his face almost funny to the young Gryffindor.
"I am not sure how much simpler I can make it, Potter." After a moments thought, one James spent simply staring at the other, with a grin on his face to boot, the Slytherin made another attempt to explain the potion they were expected to make for their next class.
He wasn't entirely sure what he'd expected when he'd first stepped on the train, but finding himself alone in the library with a Slytherin certainly wasn't one of them. Frankly, judging by what his father had told him of the house, he found himself almost confused.
Almost been the right word for it.
He'd certainly not expected another Slytherin to so willingly help him. Though- Was it Avery? He never could quite hold a firm grasp on the 'Sacred Twenty Eight' nonsense. Either way, he'd practically lived up to every warning his father had given him.
"See here-" Severus's voice brought him out of his stupor. The wizard before him currently had a finger pointed towards a description of one of the ingredients required. "-without this particular ingredient, the potion-"
Not to say his own house had followed what his father had told him- And given he'd been part of said house, really said quite a bit. Oh sure, early days and all but considering the praise his father had thrown over the house, he'd expected it to be more- Interesting? Fun? He wasn't quite sure what word he was looking for.
It was really anything but, at least if one looked past Sirius Black. The others (including some of the older ones), to his disappointment, were rather dull. Which was saying quite a bit given he was currently in the library studying.
Sure he'd only been here a day, yet all the others seemed mostly interested in their ability to use magic. Something he'd grown up doing all his life. They weren't interested in exploring or looking for some sort of adventure. Sirius hadn't wasted a second, practically doing both in their first hour in the castle.
Instead, they'd rather spend their free periods uselessly wand-waving in the common room and following rules to win house points. He, after considering what the boy had said regarding said points, frankly had to agree with Sirius on it.
It really was just there to stop them from having fun.
"Potter, are you listening?"
"Yes,"
Severus twitched an eyebrow at his immediate response, before promptly closing the potions book with a thud.
"This is going to take more than one session, it seems."
He blinked at the sudden words, watching as the Slytherin rose up from his seat.
"Where are you headed off to?" He questioned, copying the other's movements.
"To the dungeon, I have my own studying to do, you know?"
"Oh, where's the fun- Think I could go there as well?"
"...Perhaps if you brought Black along with you,"
"Really?"
"Someone has to take the older years attention, I don't see them letting a Gryffindor inside otherwise,"
"Don't you need a password to get in?"
"Well, I am certainly not going to walk you through it, though I don't see a wall stopping your crazy friend,"
"He's not crazy," For some reason, he felt a small need to defend his crazy friend.
"Tell that to Professor Slughorn,"
"'sides he's your friend too,"
"I don't believe that's the term for it, nor do I recall having a choice in the matter,"
"You know, you should really get over that. Not like you know how to make any yourself,"
"I am leaving," Snape remarked with a gruff, turning on the spot and walking back towards the library entrance.
James Potter rolled his eyes before turning to check his own timetable. He was fairly sure he had Transfiguration. With- Hufflepuff?
Well, at least Remus was going to be there. He hadn't actually seen hide nor hair of the- What did Sirius call him again? 'Werewolfy' boy?
He really hoped that was just a nickname. And if it wasn't, well, wasn't like he was the one pulling the student's tail now was he? In hindsight, maybe dull was good for him after all.
It was certainly safer.
After considering the argument for a moment, he snorted and promptly made his way out.
