Chapter 4

It's (not) dead.

"Yui," Hisana started "I know that your life is probably hard but you're a great boss and I..." she stopped talking the moment a gummy bear landed on her face.

That meant she would've to start again.

"Yui," Hisana said more decisively this time "I'm truly happy about what we accomplished by working together but, I think that it's time for me to move on, I wish you the best and..."

Another gummy bear was thrown at her, but this time it landed on her head. Hisana scoffed and took a deep breath and rolled her eyes before starting again.

"Yui, listen..."

This time she couldn't even finish her initial greeting when two gummy bears hit her nose and Hisana groaned.

"Yoruichi! Would you stop that?!" Hisana screeched finally fed up with the gummy bears.

Yoruichi smirked at her, they were both sitting at the edge of Hisana's pool, Yoruichi was visiting the mansion and somehow they both decided to rehearsal Hisana's resignation. Yoruichi decided to throw gummy bears at her whenever she would say the wrong thing, by Yoruichi's standards, and by this point most of the gummy bears were on Hisana's hair.

"Hey!" Yoruichi exclaimed "I'm doing you a favor, you cannot go to that office and leave with kind words, you will no longer be at that bitch's service, you can destroy her!"

Hisana scrunched her nose, she didn't want to destroy anyone.

"What am I supposed to say?" she asked finally.

Yoruichi put on a funny face before answering.

"Something like "Yui, pathetic bitch, you've done enough to try to ruin my life but this is over, I quit" then you hand her the resignation letter and you leave," Yoruichi suggested "sounds like a plan to me."

Hisana couldn't believe that Yoruichi was talking seriously.

"Okay..." Hisana said unsure "what if she refuses to sign the resignation letter?"

Yoruichi frowned.

"You threaten her with your legal team," Yoruichi said "and that's it, you don't owe her explanations."

"She'll probably throw one or two nasty comments about how I won't have money after that" Hisana muttered annoyed while munching one of the gummy bears.

"If she does that," Yoruichi said while pointing at Hisana's face "you turn to look at her over your shoulder and say "Oh, didn't you hear? I'm the lady of the Kuchiki clan, one of the wealthiest clans around Japan" and then you leave the office."

Hisana blinked.

"You're really looking forward to my resignation, uh?"

"Yeah," Yoruichi admitted "you've no idea."

Hisana shrugged.

"There's still time for that," she said carelessly "I'll quit before I start showing, that way they won't suspect why I left so suddenly."

Yoruichi crossed her arms.

"Have you thought of any names yet?" she asked curiously "because you're being extremely patient with this whole thing, I heard that those months fly by."

Hisana tilted her head.

"We don't even know if it is going to be a boy or a girl," she said "we'll wait until..."

"Okay," Yoruichi interrupted her "McGregor, sounds nice, right?"

"Absolutely not," Hisana said "I'm not naming my child McGregor" she scoffed "besides..."

"Ichigo?" Yoruichi suggested.

"Isn't that the name of Masaki-san's son?" Hisana questioned frowning "whom, should I remind you, is also your godson?"

Yoruichi blinked three times.

"Shit," she breathed finally "I knew the name sounded familiar for some reason."

Hisana rolled her eyes.

"Role godmother," she said sarcastically "what if it's a girl?"

"Yoruichi!" Yoruichi suggested.

"Over my cold, lifeless body," someone else said while stepping into the pool area "suggest that name again and I'll order the security to keep you away from my property and my wife."

Hisana chuckled at that as she saw Byakuya approaching them, he was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a white button up, he looked exhausted but that probably was because he had spent most of the morning on an online meeting with some international associates.

"Is that the way to talk to your child's godmother?" Yoruichi questioned amused.

Byakuya frowned as he kneeled down and handed Hisana a glass of lemonade.

"Thank you, Byakuya-sama" she said as she accepted the cold drink "how's the meeting going?"

"Awful," Byakuya admitted "we're on a brief break, by this point I'm just going to be on mute until father decides he no longer wishes the alliance."

Hisana smiled.

"Or you could join us and abandon the meeting completely," she suggested while looking at him with her expressive blue eyes "it's a Saturday after all."

Byakuya sighed.

"It's okay," he told her "it will end before lunch," he turned to look at Yoruichi then "are you staying for lunch?"

Yoruichi grinned mischievously.

"Do you want me to stay?" she asked.

"No," Byakuya assured her "I'm just asking hoping you will reject the invitation and leave me alone with my wife and child."

Hisana coughed delicately to hide a chuckle while Yoruichi laughed loudly, she obviously found Byakuya remarks extremely funny and was not offended by his words.

"Rest assured, Byakuya-boo!" she told him "I'll be gone before lunch, my husband wants me to pick him at the airport so I'll have eat with him" she paused "or I'll eat him, it's been a while since I last saw him and…"

Hisana blushed while she coughed again to hide her laugh.

Byakuya said nothing else as he kissed Hisana on the cheek and stood up to go back to his meeting, once he was out of earshot Yoruichi rolled her eyes.

"He's quite the handful, uh?" she asked "I can't believe you married him and now you're giving him an heir!"

Hisana laughed.

"Should I remind you that it's thanks to you that I met him?"

Yoruichi sighed heavily.

"Right? The bastard should show a little bit of respect towards me" she reasoned with a smile "anyway, back to the topic..." she said while taking a sip of Hisana's lemonade "Byakuya Junior?"

Hisana couldn't help it so she laughed loudly, she loved it whenever Yoruichi visited the mansion.

An hour later all the business associates left the meeting with unhappy faces and Byakuya thanked heaven that he was no longer trapped, he was hungry and wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his weekend with his wife, he could worry about work on Monday.

"Son," Soujun called him before he could log out of the meeting "do you have any plans for today?"

Byakuya frowned.

"Why?" he questioned, he knew that his father tend to get bored on weekends but Byakuya wasn't in the mood to indulge him with company.

"Because I think that we, as a family, should start planning the baby shopping I mean…"

Byakuya logged out of the meeting before his father could finish that sentence, he was the one who was going to become a father and he wasn't panicking yet, it was too early and they didn't even know if it was going to be a boy or a girl, the shopping trips could wait. Sighing heavily he stood up from his desk and left his office to look for Hisana, he was thinking about what they could order for lunch but his plans were thrown out of the window when he stepped into the dining room and found Hisana eating a greasy cheeseburger.

She looked at him once he took a seat next to her.

"Sorry," she excused herself before he could ask about her lunch choice "your child was extremely hungry, I couldn't help myself."

Byakuya nodded as she passed him another cheeseburger.

"I know it's not that fancy but it won't kill us once in a while," she assured him and then smiled at him "okay?"

Byakuya decided not to mention that, considering how hungry he was, he was thankful at having the greasy and unhealthy food in front of him.

"What are you watching?" he asked her as he took one of the French fries on his plate.

"Oh!" Hisana said as she turned her attention back to her computer "I was looking for baby cribs and the stuff that we're going to need for the room but…" she paused as she took a sip of her soda "somehow I got sidetracked and ended up watching baby goats munching on grass, aren't they cute?"

Byakuya raised an eyebrow questioningly.

He had never been much interested on farm animals, or animals in general, and he was sure that Hisana was almost the same as him, her longest and most serious love and hobby was fashion. He remembered clearly the night she met her and how effortlessly she was wearing a high couture dress and later on, once she trusted him enough to invite him to her apartment, he discovered her closet and got to the conclusion that if it wasn't for her love for brands her savings account would rival his own.

So, what was up with the baby goats now? Perhaps pregnancy did funny things to women, he would have to inform himself about that if he wanted to keep a poker face during the baby goats' videos…

"Oh, look!" she exclaimed happily as she took Byakuya's burger before he could even touch it "there are baby bunnies as well, those are cuter than the goats" she declared before taking a huge bite of Byakuya's lunch.

He took a sip of his soda as he watched the animals going around the farm and then at his wife, she had told him about the incident on Yui's office and how she threw up the hamburgers she bought with Yoruichi that day, should he stop her from eating so much or was this healthy during pregnancy? Shouldn't they be looking for a more balanced diet?

Byakuya didn't know and judging by Hisana's careless pose she wasn't too worried about it either. He looked at the computer again and this time there was a baby cow on the screen, he was about to ask if they could watch something else when he noticed how Hisana paled considerably and put the hamburger on the plate slowly.

"Is everything okay?" Byakuya questioned cautiously, why the sudden change? He wondered.

Hisana gulped as she stood up quickly and ran towards the bathroom.

Byakuya stayed on the dining room a few seconds before, reluctantly, walking towards the bathroom. The noises coming from inside were enough to let him know that he would have to advise Hisana to stop eating hamburgers from now on and to take her health more seriously.

"Let me in," he said when he realized that she locked herself inside "Hisana."

"You don't want to see me like this," she sobbed quietly after a few seconds "go away."

Byakuya sighed heavily, he certainly didn't want to see bodily fluids, but he wanted to be there for her, and if that included kneeling next to her and patting her back while she was… busy in the bathroom then so be it.

Besides, wasn't her current situation his fault?

"Hisana," he insisted "is nothing out of this world, let me in."

A few more seconds went by and Hisana opened the door.

Byakuya looked at her sad eyes, she obviously cried a little while throwing up, and her slouched shoulders showed how she was no longer happy enough to keep watching little farm animals.

"Hisana," he said while caressing her cheek "what's wrong?"

She took a deep breath.

"It's dead," she said finally as some tears welled on her eyes "it's utterly dead."

Byakuya's breath hitched as his heart started to race with worry, she didn't mean…?

"Hisana!" he said more urgently this time while taking her by her shoulders and forcing her to look at him "who's dead?! What happened inside there?! Are you…?!"

Hisana sobbed as she hugged Byakuya.

He was going to start panicking unless she would explain soon.

"Hisana?" he called her as he hugged her back "what happened?"

"The baby cow," Hisana sobbed against his chest "I killed her while ordering a fucking hamburger, I'm a monster."

Byakuya exhaled sharply as he let relief washed through him, she wasn't talking about the baby, they were both okay.

"It's okay," he assured her feeling silly "it's okay."

Hisana simply sobbed harder as Byakuya prayed for the nine months to go by quickly.

Soujun scoffed as the maid served him lunch on the pavilion overlooking his garden, he wasn't happy about having lost all of his Saturday morning on a difficult, and useless, meeting and the fact that his, ungrateful, son was leaving him out of his road to parenthood was annoying as well. What was he supposed to do while waiting for the baby? He knew that once he had his granddaughter with him there would be lots to do, shopping trips, visiting the club so she could play with the animals there, swimming classes and visiting the park but meanwhile… nothing.

"Son," Ginrei said while taking a seat across him "stop sulking, is not proper."

Soujun frowned deeper.

"You're bored," Ginrei pointed out "why don't you go out? You used to catch the girls' eyes whenever you visited the club."

Soujun chuckled.

"I stopped dating a while ago," he reminded Ginrei "I'm too old now."

Ginrei nodded.

"Ah yes," he agreed "I remember your annoying tendency to bring home girls old enough to be considered your daughters, I don't miss that at all."

Soujun decided to keep quiet, he knew it wasn't the most honorable hobby and he didn't want to excuse himself but back in the day it was those girls the ones asking him to take them home with him. Luckily all of that ended when Byakuya started dating and Soujun realized how awkward was to have her daughter-in-law seeing him with girls around her age on his arm.

He was a changed man now.

A changed man that couldn't wait to hold his first grandchild.

"How much longer?" Soujun wondered.

"Eight months," Ginrei answered smiling as if he was reading his thoughts "you'll be allowed to act as the crazy grandfather until then."

Soujun chuckled.

"Those two won't know what'll hit them" he muttered.

"The Kuchikis' pregnancy are never smooth," Ginrei agreed "your mother threatened to leave me several times during those nine months."

"Whatever for?" Soujun asked curiously.

"Apparently my fortune was useless because all around the world penguins were dying and I couldn't stop that from happening," he seemed to ponder on that for a second "at least that was the reason on the early months, after that it was my fault that she looked like a whale."

Soujun shuddered as he remembered his wife saying something similar.

"Let's see what Hisana comes up with," he said finally "and let's hope Byakuya can handle it."

"Give it time," Soujun said "he'll be at our door begging for a place to sleep sooner than later."

Soujun laughed as that scene popped on his head.

"No more surprises," Hisana promised that night as she and Byakuya walked around the garden the cherry blossoms were blooming and the sound of the pool at the background had a calming effect on both of them "I mean it."

Byakuya took her hand kindly.

"It's okay," he assured her, he felt as if he had been saying that a lot "Unohana explained how everything can happen during these months, I won't take your "it's dead" announcements seriously."

Hisana frowned as she put herself in front of her husband to stop him from walking.

"Sorry," she said sadly "I seriously don't know what happened, I'll avoid hamburgers from now on."

Byakuya placed his hands on her waist as he leaned down and kissed her, he wanted her to stop overthinking about her lunch incident, that was over and now all he wanted to do was to enjoy her company, nothing unexpected could happen on a peaceful walk around the garden.

Hisana sighed happily as she melted into the kiss, she was okay, the baby was okay and she was married to the most wonderful man on earth, she felt so at peace and so calm that she couldn't believe how her eyelids started to feel heavy all of sudden.

Byakuya stopped kissing her once he noticed how she wasn't moving her lips anymore, he looked at her and noticed how her eyes were closing.

"I love you," she breathed finally before passing out on his arms "Byakuya-sama."

She stopped her before she could hit the ground.

"Hisana!" he called urgently "open your eyes!"

He was about to order one of the maids to call for an ambulance when he noticed her even breathing and then the unthinkable… she started to snore, she didn't pass out, she simply fell asleep while kissing him.

"No more surprises, uh?" he muttered half amused half worried.

Byakuya started to pray, again, for the nine months to fly by.
