Chapter 1
HA-HA TALENT BOOKING DRESSER ROOM/LOCKER ROOM
The year is 1981, Arthur Fleck, a Thirty-Two-year-old man with brown shoulder length hair and green eyes was sat in front of a large mirror that had light bulb's going around the frame they were all lit up . He had a very petite body built and five foot eight in height with an iconic scar upon his top lip that went to his nose. Arthur was sitting on a small stool in white tee and brown trousers.
The radio was playing; a news anchor was giving the daily update and top story — day 18 of the garbage strike. He was putting on clown makeup in a full mirror. He dipped his paint brush into the white pot going across his lips. Watching his reflection in mirror, his eyes glossed over as he watched himself. Arthur put his brush and cigarette down onto the table.
He tried to laugh, but tears up. He puts his fingers in the corners of his mouth to put it up into a grin, then pulls them down into an exaggerated frown. Back up into a grin, with a makeup stained tear running down his face. As he pulls on his fingers yanking on the sides of his face, he kept hold of it still pulling. Finally letting go he smudges his white base paint a blue tear falling down his cheek ruining his work.
Other co-workers behind him ignored his actions, as they sat on their breaks eating and chatting away. Whilst others were getting ready for their shift's props for their acts scattered around the room along with clothing and make up. Arthur finished getting ready and made his way to his location for his shift at work.
SQUARE, MIDTOWN - KENNY'S MUSIC SHOP
Gotham Square was clogged with traffic, non-stop honking horns and pedestrians crowding the sidewalk. Huge billboards, giant movie marquees and garbage bags piled high everywhere (as they had built up – much like the social tension in Gotham). Underneath it all a tinkling piano can be heard playing something bouncy, cheery and fast-paced. From across the busy street city street, Arthur emerges.
He's dressed as a sad-faced hobo clown, his signature look for the clown company he worked for. Dressed in tattered clothes a blue, white and red stripped jacket with a red flower on his left breast pocket, golden yellow waist coat, red and gold striped tie, white shirt that had small black dots scattered across it, burgundy baggy trousers with stitched patches on his legs two on his right one of his left, white gloves and giant oversized shoes that were blue and red.
The outfit was completed with a clown wig that had green curly hair which went to his shoulders and a small brown circle shaped hat. His face was painted with red drawn eyebrows, four blue triangles two above and two below. He was also wearing a big bulbous red nose and his mouth was covered with a red smile that had a black outline around it.
His job for the day was to promote a closing down sale outside of Kenny's Music shop. He stood outside the front of the shop, holding a yellow sign that read, "EVERYTHING MUST GO!". A banner above the store stated that it was "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS!" Behind him, an old African-American man in his fifty played on a black piano on the street.
Both of them were there to draw attention to the big sale going on in the store. Arthur was doing a Charlie Chaplin like waddle to the music. Most people walk past, ignoring him. A few of them bumped into him by mistake. But he continued dancing, not letting it stop him from doing his job.
INSIDE KENNY'S MUSIC SHOP
Lilith was at her work place having just recently moved to the city of Gotham. She was new to the big city. She was Twenty-Five years old, with long blonde hair that had a fringe and blue eyes. She had a slender figure with curves and stood at five foot four. Lilith was trying to distract herself from the Clown that was dancing outside and doing tricks.
She wandered the store cleaning; she took any job she could get her hands on to stop herself from looking out the front windows. The last thing she wanted was to be bored, like her fellow collages were as they stood around the store. Her colleagues were trying to look busy by just pretending to do something or chatting amongst themselves waiting for customers to come in but none did.
Lilith sighed aloud, she had no idea how long she had left in this job. Each day brought more for her to worry about, she worried whether it would be her last pay check or even worse, if she was going to be told she was just being let go. Trying to find another job was difficult in Gotham, it had taken her a long time to get this one. Lilith had handed out papers and been to interviews.
But she never heard back from any of the employers. All she had was her market job to back her up on the weekends. But even that did not bring her much money to pay the bills. Her mind had drifted as she stood still, causing her to stop cleaning.
"LILITH!"
She jumped and looked up to see her boss, a sixty-year-old American man stood at the counter. After being startled by his yelling and seeing the stern look upon his face, she faked a smile at him.
"Sorry boss I will get back too it!"
He gruffly nodded at her and replied,
"Get too it! I do not pay you to stand around all day!"
Lilith sighed in annoyance, muttering under her breath as she turned her back to him.
"You hardly pay us anything at all you cheap bastard."
She continued to dust the empty shelves with her multi-coloured feather duster stick from the musical instruments that had once cluttered them. They had sold almost everything and were not planning to re-stock them.
She made her way to the front of the store and froze as she saw the Clown. He waddled over to the window. Their eyes locked as he spun the sign in his hands. He stared blankly at her; it was unclear what his intentions were. Lilith went to squeal but quickly slapped her right hand over her mouth to muffle her scream from her fellow collages. She did not want them to hear her.
Her heartbeat increased, her body shaking from fear as her palms got sweaty. Her eyes widened and her pupils dilated. She closed her eyes and tried to calm herself down.
'Please go away! PLEASE!'
She slowly opened her eyes to find that her wish was granted. The sinister and mysterious clown had moved away, with his back to her. Lilith let out a sigh in relief she wiped her wet hands on her work clothing. She was wearing a blue polo neck t shirt with a name badge on her left breast. Matching coloured trousers and plain black trainers it was a simple uniform.
Still dusting away, she looked to her left to see five boys making their way up the street. Lilith stopped; something alarmed her about the way they looked at the Clown with mischievous smirks upon their faces. She felt her heart skip a beat in concern. It seemed trouble may be happening any minute.
OUTSIDE KENNY'S MUSIC SHOP
Arthur saw a group of five boys, no more than 15-years-old, walking toward him. He moved out of their way. They cracked up laughing when they saw him and started making fun of him. Arthur ignores them and tried to do his job the best he can while maintaining some dignity. He keeps dancing along with the music.
"Whoa what's with the shoes bra?"
The kids laughed at him, Arthur didn't say anything just continued his act.
"If you are going to be a Clown, at least be a good one you know that right?"
Finally, he did a star jump and held the sign in the air above his head. The kids cracked up once again with what was happening before them as they watched Arthur. Suddenly, one of the kids bashed the sign in his hands harshly. Arthur let out a scream as it got knocked out of his hands; he turned around to grab it from the floor. But another kid kicked his ass and yells out to him.
"Whoops!"
Arthur landed face first onto the sidewalk from the shove. Oddly, the old man playing the piano picks up the pace of the music, in time with the attack unfolding behind him. One of the boys grabbed Arthur's sign before the fallen clown could take it. The boy takes off running across the street yelling out.
"Suck my dick Clown!"
The other kids follow, weaving through traffic yelling out in unison.
"Go, go, go!"
Arthur gets up and gives chase. He needs his sign back. He almost gets hit by a taxi, spinning out of the way just in time. Disorientated and panicked, Arthur spins right into another taxi. The taxi stops just short of hitting him as he makes it across the street. The kids looking back shouting.
"Come on let's go, we got the sign!"
Arthur keeps running through the traffic of people as they stare at him, he yells out to people.
"Stop them! Please stop them!"
But the people just ignored his pleas and continue on. A Clown barrelling down the street has got to be a joke, right?
INSIDE KENNY'S MUSIC SHOP [before the chase]
Lilith was watching everything unfold in front of her as the kids picked on the Clown, she felt bad for him. A part of her wanted to help but her fear of getting close to him kept her grounded to the floor. She still wanted to do something though she looked over to her boss.
"Boss! A bunch of kids are picking on the Clown outside"
Disinterested, her boss didn't even look over at him, he just kept reading from his book and eventually replied:
"I'm sure it is all part of his act he is a Clown after all"
Lilith tutted in disgust at her boss, she could not believe what she was hearing. She could see the clown needed help. She went to say something, but her Boss got there before her.
"Before you say anything, I am sure he can take care of himself, Clowns' deal with kids all the time and if the sign goes missing it will come out of his pay check"
Lilith was appalled by what she was hearing, when she looked back and that's when she saw one of the boys kick him knocking the Clown to the floor on his face. They ran off with his sign and went across the street with him following. Before she knew it, she felt herself running towards the front door and pulling it open, causing it to slam against the frame.
Her boss called after her as she chased after the Clown, anxious about getting across the extremely busy road. She dashed across, trying her best not to get hit as she dogged the cars, as they came towards her. Angry drivers honked their horns at her as she made her way across the street. Eventually she saw the Clown down the other end.
The five boys sped down the crowded street laughing and whooping it up. At the last second, they take a sharp right turn down a cross street. Arthur almost overshoots the corner, slip-sliding in his big red shoes. He hastily picks himself up, pushing himself off from his hands and yells out to them.
"You fuckers!"
He chased after them and saw them running up ahead laughing at him. Arthur panted heavily, trying to keep a steady pace. He saw them stop looking back at him. Desperately trying to get his sign back, his attentions were focused on them. When out of nowhere he got hit in the face with his own sign, harshly splitting it in two pieces the hit, knocking him completely off his feet. He fell to the ground and the kid that was hiding between parked cars starts kicking him calling out to his friends.
"Come on let's beat this asshole!"
The other kids turn back and walk up to Arthur who was still helpless on the ground. Arthur reaches out, still trying to save the sign as the kids start viciously kicking and brutally beating the shit out of him. Nobody on the street stopped to help; they just walked past and let it happen. Arthur has one hand between his legs and the other covering the back of his neck protecting them.
The leader yells out to his friends.
"Come on harder!"
Sweat ran down Arthur's face, smearing his make-up. He didn't even look like he was in pain. He just numbly took the beating as they called out to each other.
"Come on this guy's weak he can't do nothing!"
One kid yelled out as they continue to beat him to a pulp,
"Take his stuff!"
Another kid looks up and see's Lilith coming towards them, he pats the leader who looks up too. They dashed off in the opposite direction, chuckling at their actions as they left him lying beaten on the ground. Lilith made her way to him as Arthur laid there rocking. Both hands were between his legs, he breathed heavily. He reached out with his left hand towards the sign in one final attempt, but he could not reach it and gave up.
Lilith finally made it to him. The Clown had his back to her; she looked down to see him shaking. She crouched towards him and reached out with her left hand towards his shoulder, her heart pounded against her chest. She could hear it ringing in her ears, the closer she got, the harder it pounded. Her breath quickened as she reached out her hand.
She just couldn't do it. She mumbled to herself in frustration getting up to her feet. She hugged herself as she tried to comfort her fear, she turned away unable to look at the Clown.
"Shit..."
But her heart fell in despair as she heard him panting and groaning in pain, she looked back over at him. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw him looking up at her, his eyes half open mouth opening and closing from his cries. His left hand clung to his ribs; her eyes began to sting from her tears as she looked of him. How could people do this to somebody? She swallowed the lump in her throat and called out to him the first thing that came to her head.
"Are you okay?"
But the Clown did not answer, he just kept panting. Lilith cursed herself for asking such a stupid question.
'You idiot Lilith, of course he is not okay just look at him!'
Lilith reached out to him again; her hand gently patted his shoulder feeling the cloth of his jacket. Arthur flinched at her touch, causing her to scream lowly and pull away from him. His eyes opened wide in fear, his pupils reducing the colour from his irises. She smiled at him, their eyes locked she assured him.
"I'm not going to hurt you okay?"
He continued to look at her, unsure of what she was going to do. She could still see the worry in his glossy eyes as they shone with tears. She gently squeezed his shoulder trying to comfort him. She was unsure if it was working as she gently called out to him.
"I want to help you..."
He began to breathe steadily again, she could still hear his cries. She nodded at him as she asked her question. Whilst talking, she smoothed her thumb over his jacket in a caring manor.
"If you want me to?"
Arthur could feel her digit as it moved left to right and circled. Arthur felt at ease with her and her sweet smile. He slowly motioned his head in agreement with her request, she mumbled to herself as she rose to her feet.
"Great"
Lilith stepped in front of him and turned to face him. He watched her as she emerged from his back, having been behind him this whole time. She bent down to her knees feeling the gravel on her skin as it poked through the thin fabric of her trousers. She looked down at him, still lying on his side.
"Can you get up? Or move at all?"
Arthur looked over at her, shaking his head in a 'no' gesture. He was in too much pain to move. He let out a groan as he shook his head at her. Lilith reassured him and talked him though how she was going to help him, asking;
"Okay I am going to grab you from behind under the arms and I want you to lift yourself up onto your feet as I pull upwards, okay?"
Arthur nodded his head in agreement. But he had a confused look on his face; he wasn't used to being helped. She smiled in response. Getting back onto her feet she went back around him again going back onto her knees. She gently grabbed both his shoulders within her hands.
"Okay I am going to move you into a sitting position; first can you move your legs as I do so?"
Arthur agreed, still confused by the experience of being cared for. She sighed happily at his response. Slowly moving him into a seated position, she lifted his body sideways to the left taking in his moans as she pulled him upwards every time, she stopped periodically to let him recover. To Lilith's shock he was really light, so it was easier for her to move him.
However, her mind began to wonder just how much he actually weighed? Arthur gradually moved his legs each time she moved him. With both of their efforts, they manged to get him into a seated position, with Arthur sat in front of her. She could smell his aftershave it was a nice woodsy/earthy scent with mixed fruits. The scent was combined with cigarettes and she was sure a hint of whiskey too.
Lilith spoke to the Clown softly,
"Okay on three we will lift you up to your feet, kay?"
The clown nodded in agreement, causing her to cough aloud with his hair getting in her face. She shook her head from side to side sputtering. He lowly whimpered out to her,
"I am sorry..."
But Lilith just smiled, she knew it was not his fault he was wearing it and giggled at the situation replying;
"It is okay it's not your fault. Okay ready on three!"
She counted aloud to him and they both lifted upwards at the same time. He let out a loud groan of pain from the shock and they both managed to stand up onto their feet once again. Lilith let go of him and cheered aloud, unexpectedly bobbing on her feet as she raised her arms in the air.
"Yes, we did it!"
Giggling to herself, the Clown turned around to face her in 'thanks'. But, as he turned a large jolt of pain shot through his torso like fire. Lilith eyes widened in shock, she let out a loud shriek, seeing him tumble forwards. She quickly put out her arms out to catch him, her body reacting instinctively. Their bodies slammed into each other with a thud causing them both to gasp from loss of air.
Her arms wrapped around him as he did the same. His face rested upon her left shoulder, she could feel him trembling from the agonizing pain that was shooting through him against her body. She felt herself trying to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. He held her tightly against him, causing her to gasp from the grip she had no idea what to do right now.
Should she push him off her? Hold him back? Or try to soothe the pain? As they stood in the alley way with people looking at them both as they walked past. Lilith felt her cheeks heat up. As they stared into one another, this was not how she imaged her day at work to be. Holding a Clown but she smirked to herself. At least she did not have to work at that shit hole with the worthless boss who paid her fuck all.
Lilith looked to her left, the Clown still holding her; they could not stay here all day. Surely, he had a home and family to get too? As her heart started to pound against her chest, she was feeling uneasy about the situation. She still did not know what his intensions where as his hold was lasting too long to her likening. She was beginning to want this Clown to get off her now.
She did not even know what his name was. She licked her dry pink lips and decided to gently ease things along.
"Um, Mr. Clown...?"
She felt him move against her body as he answered her question. "
Arthur..."
