Chapter 5
ARTHUR'S FLAT – PENNY'S ROOM
Arthur turned off the bedside lamp and made it dark in the room he smiled a huge grin upon his face.
"Yay Murray!"
Arthur went around the bed to the other side and turned off the other lamp. He got into the bed with Penny she started to eat her meal again. The announcer appeared and started to talk enthusiastically to the screen.
"From MTV studios to Gotham City it's live with Murray Franklin! Tonight, Murray welcomes, Sandra Winger, comedian Skip Byron and the piano stylings of Yeldon& Chantel! Joining Murray as always, Don Ellis and his Jazz Orchestra and now, without any further ado. Murray Franklin!"
A big grin upon Arthur's face he looked at the screen, Murray was an idol and Father figure to him. Arthur and his mom watched from the bed; a weekly ritual of theirs. His mum mentioned that Sandra Winger was on.
As they watched the show, Arthur began to imagine himself on the show sat in the audience.
ARTHUR'S DREAM SEQUENCE – MURRAY FRANKLING SHOW
The small jazz ensemble played the Murray theme tune, to wild cheers, as the audience clapped from the crowd. Arthur was stood up, the audience clapped then sat down he still clapped. Lilith sat beside him and wore a beautiful green strapless dress and silver necklace.
She looked at him, a big smile on her face as she clapped in time with everyone. Murray walked out onto the stage through the curtains and waved his arm at the jazz band in time with their music. Arthur clapped the hardest and made himself known, as he yelled out Murray nodded at them.
"Awww, thank you"
He started to talk about the latest news headline.
"So, everybody heard about the super rats that are in Gotham, now right? Well, today the Mayor says he has a solution. You ready for this?"
He left a brief paused then continued,
"Super cats!"
Everybody in the audience started to laugh out loud Murray continued on,
"But in all seriousness, I mean these rats-"
However, Murray got interrupted by Arthur's distinctive laugh at Murray's joke and shouted out.
"I love you, Murray!"
He joked back and returned the 'love' to him the crowed laughed as Murray told Bob to turn the lights on and pointed out to Arthur. Lilith gasped in shock and they both looked at each other. She tapped him on the leg in an excited manner.
"Who was that? Was that you? You wanna stand up, please? S-stand-up"
Arthur stood up and wore a white shirt, blue cardigan and matching coloured trousers his hands behind his back the spotlight shined on him. He smiled a big grin he loved the attention on him he asked him a question.
"What's your name?"
Arthur looked around everyone looked at him and answered back,
"Hi, Murray. Arthur"
Murray checked with him in a confused voice,
"Arthur?"
Arthur replied to him,
"My names Arthur"
Murray nodded at him in understanding and continued on,
"Oh okay. Well, there's something special about you Arthur I can tell. Where you from?"
Arthur answered his question.
"I live right here in this city. W-with my Mother"
Everyone in the audience laughed at him, expect Lilith who frowned at everyone who took the piss. But, Arthur just smiled at them he did not let it bother him. Murray however, defended him.
"Okay, hold on, hold on. There's nothing funny about that, I lived with my Mother before I made it, just me and her. I'm that kid whose father went out for a packet of cigarettes and he never came back"
Everyone 'awww's' at the statement and Arthur nodded at them in agreement before he commented on it.
"I know what it's like Murray I been the man of the house for as long as I can remember. I take good care of my Mother"
Everybody clapped at Arthur he stood there with a serious look upon his face at his comment Murray joined in and answered,
"All that sacrifice she must love you very much?"
Arthur replied which he did.
"She does. She always tells me to smile and put on a happy face she says I was put here to spread joy and laughter"
Everybody 'aww' at his statement and clapped in agreement, Arthur smiled at the applauses. Murray was impressed by him.
"Wow. I like that a lot come on down! Come on down for that you got to come down! Come on!"
Arthur shook his head and refused, shocked by the offer. But, Lilith stood up and hugged him happy for Arthur she encouraged him. Murray started to dance; it caused the music to play the light shone down upon him.
Murray raised his hand and he was given a rousing round of applause by the audience. Arthur made his way down to the stage a huge grin upon his face at applause he got. Murray went to a commercial break and whispered into his ear.
"Was that your girlfriend up there?"
Arthur answered,
"Yes..."
Murray winked at him playfully and replied.
"She is a keeper boy"
Murray put his hand upon his shoulder he patted him then grabbed his hand and raised it into the air. The audience got loud at them Arthur let go and bowed at the approval at them. Murray stopped them.
"Okay we got a big show tonight stay tuned we will be right back"
The guy behind the camera flashed a card, he was ready to tell everyone it was okay to take a break if they needed to go. Murray looked over at Arthur and spoke to him the audience clapped once again.
"That was great Arthur thank you I mean I loved you what you had to say it made my day"
Arthur smiled at him sweetly he loved it all,
"Thanks, Murray"
Murray continued on he praised him.
"You see all this the lights the show the audience all that stuff I'd give it all up in a heartbeat to have a kid like you"
Arthur smiled he felt overwhelmed by him and they both hugged swaying side to side he patted Arthur on the back. Arthur snapped back to reality and smiled at his dream, his mother still ate as she watched the show oblivious to Arthur.
LILITH'S APARTMENT- GOTHAM City
Lilith leaned against the back of her front door tears fell down her cheeks. She sobbed heavily, she tried to calm herself down. She covered her mouth with her hand as she hiccupped she cried.
She got up and walked into her living room. Dropped her bag onto the floor she sat on her double sofa and held her head within her hands. She closed her eyes and breathed deep to try to stop her hiccup.
But, her tears kept falling she could not stop them. Was what Arthur had said still hurting her heart or was it something else? Lilith was confused as she snorted and wiped her nose she sat up, and sighed heavily.
She began to feel like a fucking bitch right now with how she had treated Arthur beforehand in the hallway. She knew he was only trying to help her and she had treated him like trash or shit by throwing it in his face.
She needed to apologize, even if he did not forgive her. It was the best she could do and it would make her feel better. She remembered their conversation and the look of pain on Arthur's face she had told him to leave her alone.
She mumbled to herself.
"I'm such a fucking bitch!"
She asked herself,
"I'm so heartless why did I do that to him?"
Guilt flowed through her body, Lilith knew what she needed to do and take the consequence her actions. She hugged herself her heart still hurt from Arthur's sorrow on his face. She looked over at the front door.
Would he still be up at this time? She knew he lived with his mother and did not want to wake her up. Lilith was unsure what to do, tutting in annoyance she made an excuse to not go over there.
She knew it was because she was afraid of what Arthur would say to her. She hated herself and what she had done. She did not want to admit it but she secretly wanted them to be friends. She had enjoyed the moment they had shared that day.
She wanted more days like that, but, was scared to admit it as she had never had a friend before. In the city she used to live in, she did not get along with anyone. She kept to herself, being quiet, worked away and then went home.
She did not know how or what to do with friends. now she felt she might have ruined the opportunity to have one, if she could not fix it. She wanted to fix this even if it meant she would have to beg.
She lowly mumbled to herself.
"Arthur... I'm so sorry..."
She knew he was not here to hear it but, she still felt the need to say it. Lilith knew she needed to grow up and take responsibility for her own actions. She stood up wiping her eyes and sniffled away the last of her tears.
She walked toward her front door and opened it, heading toward Arthur's door. She stopped in front of it and took in a deep breath. Raised her hand, she froze, her hand shook from nerves she let out a deep sigh to relax.
'Come on Lilith you can do this. If you don't then, when will you?'
Lilith knocked on the door gently, she did not want to disturb if his Mother was asleep. She waited but nobody seemed to answer her. She felt a disheartened sadness fill her heart and her eyes begun to sting.
She lowly mumbled,
"I guess he does not want to talk to me..."
Lilith chuckled to herself and walked off.
"Of course, he wouldn't after what I've done to him..."
She made her way to her door, she suddenly heard a lock she turned around. She slowly walked back to him Arthur was stood in the frame. He looked at Lilith she looked at him and smiled weakly.
Arthur returned it and lowly said,
"Lilith..."
She answered him,
"Arthur I'm..."
Her bottom lip started to quiver, she tried to continue.
"I'm so sorry with what I said before, I was such a bitch to you. I should not have taken my bad day out on you. I should not have shouted at you like that... I-"
Arthur watched tears fall down her cheeks, she begun to ramble and did not stop her speech.
"I understand if you do not want to talk to me again but please just know I'm so sorry and I hope you can forgive me..."
Arthur felt his heartbreak in sympathy for her as she continued on, he needed to stop her. He grabbed both her shoulders it caused her to freeze and looked at him. Their eyes locked green on blue, forgiveness on pain.
Lilith lowly mumbled to him.
"Arthur...?"
He sweetly smiled at her, his hands still gently perched on her shoulders; he stared into her puffy red eyes. He let go of her body and answered her question.
"I forgive you, Lilith"
Lilith laughed softly with joy. She wiped her sticky cheeks, she asked him a question.
"Arthur, are you free tomorrow?"
Arthur blinked a bit taken back by her question. Was she asking him on a date? Or was it just as friends? He answered her question,
"Yes, I am"
Lilith smiled and bucked up the courage to ask him,
"I would like to take you up on your offer of a drink and chat?"
Arthur's smile widened at her question, happy to oblige,
"Yes, that sounds great"
Lilith nodded, feeling happy she replied back,
"Awesome! How about 10?"
Arthur nodded in agreement,
"Sure, see you then?"
Lilith giggled at his question.
"Yes, see you tomorrow Arthur"
She waved goodbye she walked off back to her flat Arthur waved back. She heard Arthur shut his door, she walked inside her own flat. Her body finally felt relief from her action beforehand. She was glad she had apologized to Arthur and now they were going to spend a day out tomorrow as friends.
She was very much looking forward to it, she noticed the blinking light on her telephone and knew who it was. Lilith sighed in frustration and pressed the button,
"You have one message-"
She rolled her eyes, annoyed, she waited for the message start.
"Hello, Darling it's you, Mother. I hope you are okay you do not seem to be answering your calls. Are you still working at that... um, Kenny's place? When do you plan on coming home?"
Lilith growled loudly in anger at the message and pressed the button to delete it. Not giving the machine a chance to react. She walked over to the table and emptied her bag onto the table to see how much she had leftover, with hope of taking her mind off of her Mother's message.
It was not much to her shock, she did not realize she had sold that many products. Lilith counted up her profit; she had made a fair amount today. She had enough to buy some more resources to make more items to sell.
Lilith decided to make herself a quick ham sandwich which she ate slowly to savor the food. Once finished, she decided to call it a night and get a good night's sleep for her day tomorrow. She got into her pajamas and pulled her quilt over her, it did not take long for her to drift off.
NEXT DAY -ARTHUR'S FLAT
Arthur awoke early and decided to take a bath to freshen up he washed himself up. He grabbed fresh clothes his brown hoodie, blue jumper and matching colour trousers. A crisp white shirt and black shoes he was ready.
He sprayed on some cologne, took his keys and cigarettes. As he left he let his Mother knew he was going out. To which she replied back,
"Okay Happy be safe"
Arthur walked out; he shut his door and locked it behind him he walked to Lilith's door.
LILITH'S FLAT – [BEFOREHAND]
Lilith awoke to the sound of her alarm, it buzzed off she rubbed her eyes let out a long yawn. Stretching out her arms, she pushed her quilt off and washed her face. Once she had woken up properly, she put on clean clothes; a pink oversized jumper, black leggings and worn dull-white high-top canvas shoes.
Finishing her outfit with a black tattoo choker, she brushed her hair and decided to leave it down today. Feeling experimental, she applied light make-up instead of the full coverage she usually wore. Finally, she packed her keys and money into her pockets.
When she heard the door go, she smiled happily she knew who it was. Lilith walked out of her room heading to the door and opened it. Arthur stood there a big smile on his face, excited like a child who had sweets.
Lilith walked out and Arthur moved back, admiring her aura, she closed the door behind her and locked it. She turned to face him and returned the excitement with a smile. She looked forward to having a good day out.
They walked to the stairs and headed to the doors Lilith spoke,
"So, Arthur know any good coffee shops?"
Arthur replied, he did not really know any but did not want to disappoint her.
"Yes, there are few in the town centre"
Lilith understood that Arthur was probably not a coffee drinker. She thought of something else as they walked off into the streets.
"Okay, how far away is the Town Centre?"
Arthur replied back,
"A bus or train journey away"
Lilith nodded, she understood and stopped in her tracks it, caused Arthur to stop and look at her.
"How far is it if we walk?"
Arthur stood still and thought; he worked it out in his head and answered,
"About maybe an hour or so walk or more"
Lilith knew that sounded like a quite a trek which she did not want to do. She smiled at him sweetly.
"Okay bus it is then"
They walked to the nearest bus stop and sat down and waited for the usual teal and silver bus. They sat on the bench, Arthur sat next to her and left a few inches of space, he did not want to overbear her. She smiled at him and asked a question
"So how far will it be?"
Arthur went to answer her, when he noticed the bus had arrived, he quickly got up. Lilith followed suit as he waved and the driver halted in front of them. Arthur got on first and Lilith followed, he spoke.
"I will pay for this you go find a seat"
Lilith nodded her head and looked for a seat most of them were already taken up. There was not a double one available to take only single which she did not feel comfortable to sit next to an unknown person.
So, she grabbed the rope handles which hung from the ceiling. She held on to the thick fabric within her hand, Arthur made his way towards her. He saw her stood there and he walked towards her, he stood in front and held onto the rope.
Lilith could see him; he looked for a seat,
"I had a look there was not any available"
Arthur noticed the single seats and understood, he tried to bring up a conversation. He asked a question,
"So, were you brought up in Gotham?"
Lilith looked at him and answered,
"Metropolis..."
Arthur's eyes widened in shock as she continued on.
"I was born in Metropolis but, stayed here to get away from my parents. They still live there or at least as far as I know..."
Arthur was struck by the news. He could not understand why someone would want to move from a clean and friendly area like Metropolis, to a place like Gotham where everything was the complete opposite.
Lilith asked,
"So, how about you, Arthur?"
Arthur just smiled at her he answered,
"I born and raised here in Gotham"
Lilith smiled at his answer, she asked another one,
"You have any siblings?"
Arthur answered her,
"No, I'm an only child"
Arthur quickly changed the subject, asking her
"Why did you move here Lilith?"
Lilith was a bit taken aback by the sudden change of subject, but, she answered it anyway.
"I just wanted a change of scenery from my parents; they were always going on about moving to somewhere new. So, we moved to Gotham but as soon as we got here, they changed their minds. However, I managed to get a job here and stayed whilst they moved back home to Metropolis I assume"
Arthur frowned and questioned her
"You assume...?"
Lilith looked away from Arthur and his question, not sure on how to answer it. Should she tell him the truth or lie? The truth is Lilith had no idea where her parents moved to after leaving Gotham, she assumed they went back to Metropolis.
After Lilith decided to stay in Gotham her relationship with her parents broke slightly. They were not happy with her decision to stay and kept trying to get here to come home. But, Lilith was stubborn kept refusing them.
Lilith looked back at Arthur and answered him.
"Yeah, they said they were going to go back to Metropolis. But, when I refused to go with them, they stopped contact with me. So, I have no idea where they are"
Arthur felt his heart break for Lilith; she was all on her own in this city, no family to help her or come home to and laugh and chat with whilst he had his Mother to come home too. He felt she could really do with a friend.
He hoped he could make her happy and keep her safe in this dangerous city. The two stood the driver suddenly screamed out as a loud honk was heard. Everyone on the bus screamed, the driver hit the brake hard.
The bus skidded across the road just missing the cars up ahead. Everyone on board jolted forward from the harsh shake. Lilith tried her hardest to hold on to her rope, her grip slipped from the violent lunge forward. Her feet stumbled all over the ground as her shoes were unable to grip the smooth floor below. Lilith screamed. Shocked, Arthur's eyes widened in fear as he saw her fall forward.
"Lilith!"
