Chapter 6

Gotham Bus- Gotham City

Arthur quickly moved and caught Lilith within his arms as her body clashed into his. She gasped loudly from the slam of their bodies were they hit one another. But, Arthur tried his best to stand his ground they both tumbled backward.

Arthur however, kept his arms tightaround her;tryingto keep her safe from harm. He backed up into the driver's booth and leaned against it. Arthur's exhaled, a sharp pain coursed through his body from the slam against his bruised body, still injured from the beating he took a couple of days prior.

Arthur tried to ignore the pulsation in his back. Some of the other passengers had fallen out of their seats and others were clinging on to the handles of the seats. Lilith held on tightto him, her face in his chest, she gripped onto his hoodie.

The bus finally came to a sudden halt, it violently shook andsmoke came of the tyres. Everybody on board muttered, they moved to get up and get off of the vehicle in a hurry. Some of the passengers feared for their lives, others irritated and disgruntled by the experience.

Arthur leaned against the driver's booth; most of the passengers had either left the bus or were still in their seats shocked by what had just happened. Arthur could feel Lilith tremble uncontrollably against his tiny body.

Her hands gripped his brown hoodie and squeezed his frame, her face buried in his chest. She panted heavily, he was unsure if she crying while his arms caged her against him in his tight embrace. He spoke to her.

"Lilith... are you okay?"

Lilith jolted, hearing Arthur's voice snapped her out of the trance. She slowly looked up at him; her black hair covered most of her face like a veil. She replied back to him,

"Yeah I'm-"

But she quickly forgot about herself and remembered Arthur's beat up body. She gasped in shock and blurted out,

"Oh, shit! Arthur are you okay? I'm not hurting you, am I?!"

Arthur's eyes widened, she pulled away from him, the warmth they once shared gone. The loss of her against him, made him feel alone again. She reached out to touch him, but pulled away each time, worried she would cause him more pain.

Arthur reached out and tucked her hair away from her face, behind her ears. Lilith froze; she felt his ruff hands against her sensitive skin. Her heart pounded in her chest, her cheeks heated up and she went quiet.

Their eyes locked, she was able to see him again. She was unsure on what he was going to do as her pulse increased. His fingers made her skin tingle, but, his look was tender and she felt safe, he answered,

"I'm fine, you did not hurt me."

Lilith smiled with relief; they both forgot everything else around them. Suddenly, the driver shouted at them annoyed.

"Hey freako! Why don't you and your whore get the fuck off my bus?!"

They both jolted and looked away, embarrassed and frustrated, they left the bus. As they left the rest of the passengers watched them, laughing and muttered at what they had seen. The driver announced,

"Sorry folks, this bus ain't going nowhere! You's all going to have to get off here. "

Lilith looked around and saw the thick black marks on the road the strong smell of burnt rubber in the air. She coughed and wanted to be sick, Arthur turned to face her with concern in his eyes, she had her back to him; she was choking from the horrid smell.

He went to speak but got interrupted by Lilith,

"Can we move? That smell is making me sick"

Arthur answered her.

"Sure"

They both walked away from everybody, Lilith was sure she could still hear them muttering. The unwanted attention combined with the bus driver's attitude, had begun to piss her off, she felt a rage build inside her body. She wanted to say something to them, but knew it would just make the matter worse for both of them.

She wanted to have a nice day out with Arthur, but, there was always seemed to be someone or something that ended up ruining it. It felt like Gotham City was cursed.

Lilith decided to try and let it go for today, she took in a deep breath and sighed lowly. Letting her body relax as much as she could, she looked around and needed a drink to refresh her dry mouth. Free from spit and vomit she moved her blue eyes across the buildings, when she quickly did a double take and gasped aloud. She saw a nice café not far from them, on the opposite side of the road. Arthur looked at her asshe pointed to the building and excitedly asked,

"Hey, can we go in there?!"

Arthur looked over to the café and nodded in agreement,

"Sure"

Lilith smiled and loudly exclaimed,

"YES!"

He chuckled lowly at her reaction; they walked to a safe crossing. When they made it across the street, Arthur quickly opened the door for her, Lilith giggled and said,

"What a Gentleman"

Arthur smiled at her comment and shut the glass door behind him. The café buzzed with people of all ages, she knew they would not get a seat in here but it didn't bother her, they could always sit outside instead.

It was a nice day out and it would be more private too. People would not be able to listen in and they could watch the world go by when they ran out of things to chat about. Lilith looked around for a menu but the food was displayed on a light board above the tills.

She sighed in annoyance; she had no idea what to order, but she scanned the menu. She got in the que and waited her turn still undecided about what to order.

Arthur stood behind her, she turned to him asking,

"You made a choice?"

Arthur answered her,

"No..."

Lilith smiled at him.

"Me neither"

She looked at him; he looked worried, she was unsure if it was because there were too many people around. Lilith wondered if the noise and crowdwas overwhelming him, or if it was because he was not used to being out in a new hoped to be able to get out quickly, the noise and crowds of people that had come inwasa bit overbearing for her. She tried to reassure himas best as she could.

"Once we get our stuff we can sit down and chat"

Arthur looked back at her, she gently rubbed his arm in a caring manor. She tried to make him feel comfortable and less on edge. He smiled at her and tried to show he was okay, but, she felt like it was all a façade, which Lilith did not want from him. She went to open her mouth when she got interrupted by the till operator. Lilith jumped with surprise and turned to him to make her order and paid afterwards. Arthur did the same when it was his turn.

They both waited in corner for Lilith's drink to be made, she stuffed her snacks in her pocket for later. Arthur stood beside her which helped Lilith feel more at ease and block out the noise that had started to get to her head.

She did not hear her request being called, her mind was caught up on everything that was around her. Her eyes looked at everyone they chatted, laughed and ate their meals. Lilith had forgotten herself and her mind had blanked.

Arthur gently squeezed her arm to try and get her attention, Lilith jolted from the unexpected contact. It caused her to squeal in shock, she looked at him as he spoke to her but she could not hear him, all she saw was his lips move and everyone in the shop staring at her, she felt on the spot.
It felt like a bright single spot light was shining down upon her. Lilith's breathing increased she started to hyperventilate. Everyone was frowning at her outburst, her heart pounded in fear. She wanted to cry and her body shook with fear. The shop was completely quite they as they glared at her, Lilith's eyes locked with them all. She swallowed the lump in her throat as she tried to apologize.

Noticing her distress, Arthur quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the shop. Everyone watched them leave the premises as the door slammed behind them. Arthur kept hold of her hand.

He did not let go and took her to nearest empty bench where there was hardly any people about. He put her drink on the arm of bench. Arthur let go of her hand and gently grabbed her shoulders he squeezed them in a caring manner. He was about to say her name, but before he could Lilith looked at him and lowly exclaimed,

"I'm sorry Arthur..."

He frowned at her unsure why she had apologized at him, he started to answer

"Lilith why are you-"

But Lilith suddenly let out an outburst.

"I do not know what happened in there Arthur I could not hear you! All I could hear was the people around me, it became too much. They just would not shut up and then they stared at me! It felt like the spot light was all on me... I was so scared Arthur... so, afraid..."

Arthur had no idea what to do, as she stood tears fell from her eyes and down her cheeks. Her body trembled he lowly spoke to her,

"L-lilith I... I don't know what to do... What should I do?"

Before Lilith could stop herself, she blurted out.

"Hold me please Arthur... Just hold me and do not let me go..."

Her eyes widened in shock, but, she was not sure if it had been what she had said or what she had asked Arthur to do. Just like she had asked of him, Arthur held her tight within his arms around her body.

He did not let her go and she could not stop her cries she hid her face within his chest. She felt his clothes on her she wrapped her arms around him and gripped onto his hoodie. Arthur looked around; however,passers-by completely ignored them.

It was like they were not even there her drink still beside him safe. Arthur looked down at her; he could see her shoulders shake from the intensity of her crying. Arthur wanted to protect her from everybody and make her feel safe.

What he did not know isthat Lilith felt secured within his arms. She felt like no one could hurt her, she was warm and no longer lonely. She felt wanted, but she questioned if all these feelings were all in her head. She knew she had asked Arthur to hold her and wondered if he would have if she didn't.

After what had felt like forever, Lilith's tears finally stopped, her fear had died down. She spoke to Arthur who was still embracing her.

"Arthur?"

Arthur looked down at her and answered her question.

"Yes?"

Lilith looked up at him, her eyes red from her tears and her hair was scruffy, but she did not care. As their eyes locked for a few minutes, she could see something she had not seen in anyone's eyes before.

She saw that he wanted to keep her safe he did not want to let her go. She saw devotion in his green orbs and her heart skipped a beat. They could not stay like this forever although she secretly wanted to and she reluctantly asked him.

"Arthur you can let me go now"

Arthur felt himself release her from his arms they went to his sides. She smiled at him sweetly she continued,

"Arthur thank you I feel a lot better now. You are a good cuddler"

Arthur smiled back at her,she giggled at what she had said,

"I'm not even sure if cuddler is a word."

Arthur quickly answered her.

"Well, it can be our new word."

Lilith was sure he had said that in childlike way but she was not sure however, it did not bother her. She made her way to the bench and sat down with Arthur, he sat beside her. He passed Lilith her drink,

"Here"

Lilith took it from his hand,

"Thank you"

She began to drink it from her straw and let out a 'mmm' Arthur looked at her she continued to drink. Lilith spoke,

"I have not had a milkshake in years"

She looked at him and asked curiously,

"Have you ever had a milkshake?"

Arthur took a minute to think and then answered,

"I... do not think so?"

Lilith's jaw dropped in shock at what he had said and excitedly said.

"Really?! You got to try this. Here!"

She handed it to Arthur who in turn took it and drank a bit from the straw. He licked his lips and he handed it back to her she quickly asked him,

"Well?!"

Arthur just smiled at her, to which she excitedly answered for him.

"I will take that as a 'yes'?"

Arthur nodded his head at her in agreement; Lilith raised her hands in the air at his response. She shouted out,

"YES! I knew you would like it Arthur!"

Arthur chuckled lowly at her and then asked her,

"You lived next door to me. But, how come we have never seen each other before?"

Lilith lowered her arms and answered him,

"Well I have only lived in Gotham for a month and half. So, I guess we just left and arrived at the building at different times... until yesterday"

After a brief and semi awkward pause, Arthur plucked up the courage to ask,

"So, why were you upset yesterday?"

Lilith frowned slightly, she knew this question was going to come, but, she had not expected it to arrive so soon, she had hoped it wouldn't at all. She sighed lowly and remembered what had happened on that day, she answered him.

"Well, I normally work on the market on weekends, well apart from today, as we are hanging out. There was this guy working on one of the stalls and I was hungry so I asked him 'how much for an apple?' He threw one at me and came over to me"

Arthur looked at her and listened to her story whilst Lilith looked away. She did not look at him and continued on.

"He told me it was his wife's birthday and asked me if he could have a candle for the apple and anything else for it. Well seeing how it was her birthday I said he could have two. As the day went on and evening hit, I went over to his stall. But he had already packet up his stall and then drove past me with smirk upon his face."

Arthur's eyes widened in shock as Lilith continued on.

"So yeah he had gotten away with two free candles and did not keep up with his end of the bargain. I either fell for his story or it was true but I guess I should not have let it get to me. It was only two candles he took I can make some more, right?"

Arthur frowned at her which caused Lilith to flinch from the unexpected look. He answered her question.

"No, that was not right! You had every reason to be upset with him he took advantage of your kindness Lilith. No one should do that to you... no one. You worked hard to make your candles and he used that free apple to get something for free. I hope no one uses your kind nature against you again Lilith"

Lilith smiled at what he said. She sniffled and held back tears, she was unsure if what he said was to help her or make her feel better. But she was happy to have gotten it of her chest and Arthur had listened to her story.

"Thank you, Arthur. That was very sweet of you"

Arthur smiled at her. The two looked around the area; Lilith noticed something and giggled loudly. Arthur looked at her she leaned in to him and whispered lowly.

"It seems all those people who were on the bus are still waiting, serves them right for talking about us..."

Arthur looked over at them and replied.

"Yeah!"

Lilith was unsure if he had meant it or if he even known the passengers had muttered about them? Had she just ruined the day by her comment earlier.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her snack a cookie and broke it in half. She took one half and munched away at it. She handed Arthur the other half,

"Do you like cookies?"

He looked at it then back at her,

"Do you like sweet treats?"

Arthur took it and had a small bite she watched his eyes widen, she giggled at him.

"Have you never had a cookie before?"

But Arthur did not reply and slowly ate the cookie she continued hers. She took a sip from her milkshake and asked,

"Hey! What did you get from the café?"

Arthur showed her a bottle of water, she frowned,

"You did not get anything to eat...?"

He answered,

"I'm not really much of an eater..."

Lilith sighed at him unhappy with the response.

"You expect us to last all day without any food?"

Arthur did not answer her question, but, Lilith did not want to pressure him. Accepting that he ay not be comfortable eating a lot, she remembered that she smelt cigarettes on him. So, he probably relied on them more.

Arthur, however, ate the cookie. But he made it last, he was not even half way through it yet. Lilith was glad she had brought a few other treats to get them through the day. She could only hope he liked what she had picked out.

Lilith looked around, trying to think of something to do when she noticed a large building. It was on the opposite side of the road with people walking in and out with bags in her hands. A playful smirk appeared on her face.

She looked back at Arthur who in turn was unsure about her expression. He did not know what she had in mind or what she wanted them to do. Lilith finished the rest of her drink and put it in the already full bin.

Lilith got up onto her feet, Arthur watching her she walked over to him. She put out her hands to him but he did not respond to her, Lilith leaned forward.

"Come on get up!"

Arthur went to get up but stopped, Lilith did not move from her place. She tilted her face to the side. Arthur noticed Lilith reaching forward towards his face, unsure on what she was going to do. But before he could do anything, he felt her middle finger gently caressed his scar upon his lip. Arthur felt a pleasurable tingle she moved it towards his lips and brushed them both Lilith enquired.

"Arthur how did you get this?"

Her smooth finger had no idea what it had just done to him. She did it again and moved it along the line but he grabbed her hand, Arthur stopped her from doing anymore to him. Her breath hitched from the unexpected reaction.

"I'm sorry I shouldn't of-"

Arthur looked up at her, his mouth slightly open, Lilith was unsure of what was going on. Arthur answered her question.

"I have had it since birth"

Lilith felt him let go of her hand, she felt bad for what she had done she, should not have touched him like that Lilith quickly exclaimed.

"Arthur I'm sorry it was not my place to do that or even ask how-"

Arthur took both her hands in his own and interrupted her he got up too his feet. Lilith looked at him she was unsure with what was going on with him. He then ran his fingers through her jet black hair and asked.

"Why do you wear a blonde wig to hide your black hair and makeup to hide your beauty Lilith?"

Arthur watched her eyes widen at his question no one had called her beautiful before. She felt his fingers brush her cheeks; she was distracted by how to answer his question. Then she realized the scar question she had asked, it was a personal question too, so he was asking her one. Lilith licked her dry lips and closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She had never spoken about this with anyone before and now she was going to have to.

She felt his fingers run though her thick locks it sent pleasurable waves through her body. Lilith opened her eyes, their eyes locked, blue upon green, worry on curiosity. She opened her mouth to tell him.
