Chapter 36 - One Point Makes All the Difference

Unknown Location:

A group of kids were playing along the river when a charred body washed ashore.

"Is that a body?!"

"Are you going to be sick?"

'Are those, why am I still,' he moved weakly but had no energy.

"I'm calling an ambulance!"

"But we'll get!"

"And if we don't the guy's dead!"

National Tokoba Arena: - Stands

"KACCHAN!" Midoriya started to take off, but was grabbed by Dark Shadow and Aizawa's scarf, "Let go, he's..."

"He's alive," said Aizawa evenly his hair standing on end indicating he'd activated his quirk, "most likely he's just stunned, as it stands right now, if he's incapacitated due to the other student's reckless behavior, and is unable to move for the rest of this exercise, he still stands a good chance of passing. If you were to intervene..."

"I know he'd never forgive me, but..."

"It would cost him his provisional license and possibly yours," Hawks stepped in reaching over to put a hand on Midoriya's shoulder, "Trust me, Gang Orca can hear his pulse, so he's still alive."

"H-h-e can? That's right, he can do everything an Orca can do only he can do it on land as well. I didn't know his sense of hearing was that acute though," rambled Midoriya, "But why would Kacchan pass if he were knocked out of it?"

'Truthfully, Gang Orca's quirk isn't that good with all the extraneous background noise in the middle of a combat situation, but I don't think the blow killed him,' thought Hawks. 'but Midoriya doesn't need to know that.'

"It's how he got knocked out of it, because of that Shiketsu student just failed this portion of the exam due to not taking into consideration the other people on scene," answered Rocky trying to distract Midoriya. "This is one of the reasons why the laws are so strict regarding Vigilantism, a pro-hero is supposed to take into account the locations of others. You know about Endeavor's reputation of being overly aggressive right?"

"Yes, however there isn't really any major incidents that I can recall where he hurt innocent bystanders..." answered Midoriya seeming to calm down.

"Correct, that's because Endeavor actually has really good control of his quirk and exceptional situational awareness. He also doesn't try to show off to play to the public because he realizes his quirk is extremely dangerous," explained Rocky, "as is his son's. Yes he has a bad temper, yes he's extremely abrasive, yes he's gone overboard when trying to train his kid (and probably should have hired someone to teach Shouto)," he muttered under his breath before continuing though he knew Midoriya heard him, "but he would never make a mistake like that Shiketsu student did while trying to show off."

"I see, but that still..."

"The kid took out a fellow 'pro-hero' they aren't going to dock Bakugo points for getting blindsided like that," said Hawks, "Every time I appear to show off, it is carefully calculated, public approval is a big part of the pro-hero industry, for good or ill. When I get serious, I avoid trying to be flashy if there is a risk of someone being hurt."

"So Bakugo could still pass?" asked Tokoyami doubtfully.

"Yeah, they may demand Bakugo take a remedial course, but unlike the others he would have his Provisional License to start with, but they won't dock him points for being slammed into an ice wall, even if he was on the road to failing the exam, if he had enough points still up to this point, he'd still get his provisional license."

"If they suggest he take any remedial courses, I'll make it mandatory," commented Aizawa. Ms. Joke had been watching the exchange finally chipped in, "It honestly didn't look like your classmate took any life-threatening or career-ending injury, it wouldn't surprise me if he has a concussion though."

"WHAT THE HELL!" Kota shouted as Todoroki and the Shiketsu student's quirks interacted with one another to send a wall of flames toward the downed Bakugo and Ketsubutsu student. Aizawa had to again use his quirk to keep Midoriya from charging in. Fortunately, at that moment Ida and Shinso arrived on the scene with the former snatching up the Ketsubutsu student while the latter managed to pull Bakugo behind a large chunk of ice as the flames went over them.

Arena Floor:

"Seriously..." said Shinso tiredly, sounding disturbingly like Aizawa.

"What is wrong with the two of you!" Ida shouted while doing his trademark hand chopping, "You both should be ashamed!"

Shinso on the other hand, just sighed, "This is going to be a real drag," pulling his collapsible longbow from his back and started pulling arrows from his quivers, shooting as fast as he could aim them.

"Damn that fuckin wind-ass!" said Bakugo groggily, "Ow my head, I'm gonna..."

"Well there goes those two, at least they're trying to make up for their mistake after Todoroki nearly killed you and that Ketsubutsu guy, while the Shiketsu idiot nearly killed the two of you twice," Shinso spoke up cutting off Bakugo then as he observed the fire tornado, "Well at least they are trying to salvage the situation." He then called out, "Ida get your butt in gear and help with the evac."

"Wait what about?"

"I don't have superspeed and I'm laying down covering fire at the moment now go!"

"Right!"

There was a low moan from Bakugo, "I'm gonna..." The blond couldn't finish because he promptly threw up.

"Stay right there, you have a concussion," Shinso ordered tiredly while briefly taking cover to avoid the return fire, "Just try to stay awake. Now, which of those grenades on you belt do what?"

"What the hell? Don't tell me what to do! Argh my head!" Bakugo vomited again.

Shinso just rolled his eyes, "Look, I can mount some of sweat grenades of yours on some of my trick arrows, I'm running low on my taser arrows and regular ones, I don't exactly have infinite ammo." At that moment Ojiro and Asui arrived on scene. Shinso actually shouted at them, "About damn time you showed up!"

Stands:

"So, Rocky how's it look?" Hawks asked his sidekick whom had pulled out some binoculars from one of his belt pouches.

"Give me a second..." said Rocky, making adjustments to the binoculars, "Okay, Bakugo is on his hands and knees, I think he just threw up... I'm guessing a concussion; I don't think it's immediately life-threatening but will need to be treated here before heading back to U.A."

Midoriya breathed a sigh of relief, "That's a relief, I'm glad Shinso got there in time to keep him from being fried."

"Do you think he's going to get docked points, since he is moving somewhat?" asked Tokoyami.

"No, right now he'd only be in the way if what Rocky said is accurate, about him throwing up," answered Aizawa, "Bakugo's sense of balance is totally thrown off, staying put until he has his bearings in this scenario is actually the correct course of action given the mechanics of his quirk."

"That fire tornado is kinda cool, wish they'd done that in the first place," commented Hawks.

A loud buzzer sounded causing everyone participating in the exam to pause. "EVERY LAST H.U.C. MEMBER HAS BEEN RESCUED FROM IMPENDING DANGER, THEREFORE I DECLARE THIS TEST IS OVER!"

"Can I head down and check..."

"No," said Aizawa, "Let the on-site medics work in peace."

Exam area floor:

"Bakugo are you okay?" asked Mineta, "I noticed you were with the medics and now your head is all bandaged up."

"Concussion," Shinso answered before Bakugo could open his mouth.

"What happened?"

"That Shiketsu piece-of-shit is what happened," said Bakugo evenly.

"If he gets worked up and starts shouting his head starts to hurt," explained Shinso, "Basically that Shiketsu student with that wind quirk blew Bakugo practically head first into Todoroki's ice wall."

"Good thing you have such a hard head," commented Mineta.

"What's that supposed to mean?" grumbled Bakugo.

"If your head wasn't as hard as it is, you could have been killed that's what," replied Mineta, "Izzy would never forgive himself." Bakugo seemed to decide to give Mineta's comment a pass as the administrator for the exam started talking and the names were being put up as to who actually passed. 'Well I passed, and so did Shinso, I'm seeing just about everyone's name in our class... Wait he actually passed?!' Mineta rubbed his eyes thinking at first he was seeing things, "Todoroki didn't pass... but Bakugo did?!"

Bakugo started leafing through the papers as to how he did, 'Damn it, while I passed, I only did it by only one point.' Then he came across some notes recommending he attend the remedial course, 'What the?'

"What's wrong? Let me see..." Mineta managed to snatch the papers and looked through them as Bakugo started to protest, "Would you calm down, I think their recommendation would do some good," he said thoughtfully before grinning, "The hierarchy is collapsing!"

"Give it a rest!" Shinso snatched the papers back and handed them to Bakugo, "How did you do anyways?" Mineta handed over his papers for Shinso and Bakugo to look at. "How did you get an 88?"

"I worked with Yaoyorozu and followed her lead, I knew I couldn't work solo on this, I'm still not at 100%," Mineta replied, "How'd you do?"

"Seventy-five," stated Shinso, "I hesitated and took too long in the beginning, but they commended me for pulling Bakugo out of the line-of-fire."

"I was weak..."

"No, you had a concussion, don't blame yourself for the Shiketsu student's attempt to show off blowing up in his face," Shinso replied, watching Uraraka and Ida trying to console Todoroki.

"So you going to take that remedial course?"

"Yeah, the Hobo will probably make it mandatory even though I got my provisional license," Bakugo replied, "At least I managed to keep my promise to the kid."

"Kid you mean Kota?" asked Mineta, "Why, what happened?"

"It's none of your fuckin business!"

"Now just a..." Mineta was cut off as he was grabbed from behind by Kaminari, "Congrats man, now about that Dungeons and Dragons Campaign..."

"Okay, I'll work on putting a campaign together, but I'm not sure when we'll have the time."

"Cool, I'm going to see if Jiro will want to join in," said Kaminari excitedly.

"Grape Runt, I'll be playing, assuming I have fuckin time!"

"Okay, this is all assuming we have time," muttered Mineta, 'Okay coming up with a story, what setting I want to do, starting levels, whether or not level adjustments are in play, whether or not characters can have quirks... Wait there was that idea I wanted to discuss with Mister Aizawa.'

"So you planning on roping Midoriya into this?" asked Kaminari still fixated, "I got Ashido and Kirishima to agree!"

"If he has time, it's going to be even harder to work around his schedule since I'm assuming he's going to be working at Hawks' agency," answered the small teen, 'Assuming I even have time for this because Ryuku already told me she's planning on having me work at her agency.' At that moment Mineta realized what Kaminari just said, 'Wait, Midoriya, Bakugo, Kirishima, Ashido, Kaminari, Tokoyami, and possibly Jiro as well as Uraraka... That's at least eight people right there. Well it's do-able, though there may need to be an alternate DM, I definitely wouldn't have a character of my own in the party though.'

Stadium Corridor:

Kota Izumi had just gotten out of the bathroom, he had been supposed to wait on Midoriya but he kinda thought being followed everywhere was getting a little stupid, when the girl from Shiketsu stopped in front of him.

"Are you okay cutie?" she asked, causing him to go pale and start to back up. Before she could take more than a step forward a floating metal-grey robot darted between them.

"Miss, I would advise you to back away, you are causing the young master distress," said K-9 flatly.

"Oh?" she questioned. Fortunately at that moment Midoriya came out of the bathroom.

"What's going on?" the green-haired youth asked.

"He's an incredibly cute kid," she commented, however Midoriya noticed Kota was shaking and would probably have wet himself if he hadn't just gone to the bathroom.

"I'm going to have to ask you to leave, my little brother has been through something really traumatic, and you're scaring him," said Midoriya going into a defensive stance in front of the boy, he wasn't feeling danger per say, but still he felt he should be wary.

"Another time," she said walking off.

Kota sagged against the wall, breathing heavily. "Good job K-9," said Izuku, watching her leave, "We need to head to the bus, okay Kota."

"S-sure..."

"Can you tell me what scared you?"

Kota nodded slowly and started walking with Midoriya, "You see, she said something that..."

U.A. High School: Principal Nezu's Office

Principal Nezu did a double-take of his smart phone, 'This is most unusual for a student to text me. I suppose I can meet with them this evening.' He carefully checked his appointment calendar, 'I suppose I can squeeze it in between dinner and my plot to take over the world.'

In all seriousness Nezu didn't actually plan to take over the world, but it was a hobby of his to come up with scenarios for world domination. He decided to get back to his office work, because people tended to get rather annoyed when he let robots process the paperwork.

Stadium Exterior:

"Kacchan are you alright?" asked Midoriya as the students went to board the bus.

Bakugo thought about yelling at Izuku, but thought the better of it, "I got thrown head-first into a fuckin wall... Seriously, Deku do I look okay..."

"Okay dumb question, at least you kept your promise to Kota," replied Midoriya taking some relief in the fact that Bakugo couldn't start yelling at him.

"True though I still have to go to that special remedial course," Bakugo replied as Todoroki came walking up.

"Bakugo, I apologize for..."

"Icy-hot, don't start saying you're fuckin sorry for that Shiketsu dumb-ass," Bakugo cut off Todoroki.

"I see you still have a headache," commented Todoroki.

"Yeah, the medics say I'm not in any danger, but I will have the headache for at least till the end of the day, so please keep it down," replied Bakugo. Of course that wasn't to last between Ashido, Kaminari, and the others talking excitedly. "KEEP IT THE FUCK..." Bakugo began, "ow my head!"

Yaoyorozu used her quirk to make noise canceling headphones for Bakugo to wear, when Mineta approached her. "Hey Momo, I have a favor to ask."

"Okay, is this..."

"It's nothing creepy, how familiar are you with Dungeons and Dragons?"

"Vaguely..." she replied as the two boarded the bus, Mineta started laughing as he saw Aizawa use his scarf to shut up the Shiketsu student, Bakugo caught sight of the student gasping for air and started snickering, though out of the corner of his eye he thought Kota was looking uneasy.

"Wait are you trying to hit on Yaoyorozu?" asked Kaminari with a sly look.

"Kaminari, for your information I was trying to see if she'd be willing to potentially be a backup DM..." Mineta replied with a deadpan look.

"You know my younger brother plays D&D but I never saw the appeal," commented Asui, "I can see why you'd ask Yaoyorozu to be a backup DM though."

"Yeah you'd have been the next person I'd ask."

Midoriya meanwhile decided to let Kota sit next to Bakugo, figuring he could trust the explosive blond, that and Kota was kind of excited that Bakugo had gotten his provisional license (despite the extra course he'd be attending), so he managed to sit across from Mineta. "So is this going to be with quirks or without?"

"The D&D Campaign?"

"Yeah..."

"It would be good for people to be able to think up ways of applying their quirks in unusual fashions and some quirks would fit with people's characters," said Yaoyoruzu, "That said, I hope you have a rule book I could read through."

"You do have a point, I'm guessing the reason why Bakugo for example played as either a barbarian or warlock is his quirk could be factored into the game mechanics," said Mineta, "I do have several rule-books from various editions. Okay, I will allow quirks if they can fit within the game mechanics."

"Okay, I'm kinda confused, could someone explain how it would work?" asked Ashido.

"Okay take my quirk for instance," Midoriya commented, "since physical ability boosts are the easiest to transfer into the game, I would have some sort of stat boost to my strength, dexterity, and constitution."

"You'd also have a will save bonus similar to iron will, given your quirk is more complicated than that," Mineta commented, "In any event..." he grinned mischievously, "I think we should make you a natural born werewolf to top it off..."

"Say what? So his character goes bonkers during a full-moon?" asked Ashido incredulously, "I thought you and Midoriya were friends?!"

"He said Natural-born, not afflicted," replied Kaminari, "he wouldn't have an alignment restriction, and it would fit with giving him stat boosts. A Natural born may or may not have control of their shape-shifting during the phases of the moon, depending on the DM, and can't talk in beast form, but it is in the rules that unlike an Afflicted, they still maintain their rational mind. It would kind of limit Midoriya on classes, you're not giving him a level penalty?"

"No, that'd be mean," Mineta stated, "During shifts he'd already have problems with armors from a rule standpoint."

"Yeah, I'd already have to invest in shape-shifting clothes," muttered Midoriya.

"Kinda limits him to Cleric, Druid, Ranger, Bard, Barbarian, Warlock, and possibly Sorcerer, commented Kaminari and there are downsides for all of them."

"I'd go with an Wild or Wood Elf Natural Werewolf Monk in this case," commented Midoriya, "the race handicaps wouldn't counter any bonuses and the immunity to magical sleep is a bonus. All this is assuming that Mineta isn't just pulling my leg on this."

"What about your natural attacks?" asked Kaminari.

"I'm more worried about losing my regular weapons, but as a monk that's a non-issue and all my bonuses would augment my character's natural abilities. Since he isn't going with level adjustments, I'mnotgoingtohavetoworryabout...IfIfocuson..." He broke off into his mumbling trying to figure out how he'd go about things.

"Okay, then what about me?" asked Ashido.

"If I was going to incorporate your character as having your quirk, I'd go with your class being Sorcerer with some kind of bonus to acid-related spells, such as being able to do more damage than normal with acid spells and being able to cast higher level acid spells, as well as having a standard acid damage attack," commented Mineta, "Yaoyoruzu would be harder person to incorporate her quirk."

"I'm guessing because of my ability to create inanimate objects..."

"Hey Midoriya, a little feedback here," said Ashido cutting off his mumbling storm.

"Oh sorry, I'd say her character would be a wizard with a specialization in creating magical items," said Midoriya as the bus started moving.

"Yeah, again if we're going with quirks, I'll role with it but it would have to be something that I can incorporate with game mechanics," Mineta commented, "I probably wouldn't allow her character to use the quirk to create magic items though, cause that could get very broken very quickly. Now listen up, I'm going to set up a major ground rule, you have to keep your grades up, so I don't get in trouble with Mr. Aizawa. Clear?" The others quickly agreed. 'Well now I'm going to have to write an overarching campaign.'

"So about me being a Paladin..."

"Honestly, I'd recommend Favored Soul of a thunder deity," replied Mineta.

"Huh, why's that?"

"It would incorporate your quirk, you'd have cleric spells, but they'd be set and I could give you the option of some electric based spells being an option for you, plus you'd have the ability to wield said deity's favorite weapon, I'd suggest Thor personally even though he's outside the normal D&D pantheon."

"Oh man!"

"Actually that makes sense," broke in Midoriya, "Minoru is suggesting a class that you'd have a set spell list to work with instead of having to prepare spells for the day, kinda like a sorcerer..."

Tartarus Prison:

Toshinori Yagi got into Detective Tsukauchi's car seething. "You get the feeling he still feels he's in control of the situation," commented the Detective.

"Even the villain that Young Kota Izumi was attached to..." the former number one hero shook.

"No, I think it's more complicated than that, but I'd need to interview Kota to be sure," the Detective replied as he started the car.

"What?"

"The description of Spinner's reactions reminds me of another case where there was a child brothel bust," the Detective sighed, "I wasn't the one on the scene, since I was working a different case, but I had to interview the officers involved in the bust, it was bad."

"What's there to know?"

"All Might, what that monster was describing is eerily similar to the way that group made sure that the older kids wouldn't try to escape or if they were let go, they'd be too afraid to talk," the Detective replied, "They would have the older kids rape one of the newly taken kids... All for One's bragging leads me to believe that Spinner wanted no part of this, and I shouldn't be saying this, but the evidence we have lines up with my theory."

"Your theory is?"

"That All for One said that either Spinner did what he did to Kota, or he's have someone or something else, and it would have really injured Kota," the Detective was trying to keep calm so he didn't have an accident, "It sounded like Spinner was coerced only it backfired on All for One in the end."

"How the hell can you say it backfired?" All Might asked angrily.

"The person that provided us the location to rescue Kota, and I shouldn't be saying this, had some sort of reptilian quirk," Detective Tsukauchi said keeping his eyes on the road, "I believe Spinner was the one that tipped us off."

"What?!"

"Think about it, for a moment," the Detective commented, "You told me that Kota hesitated when Midoriya asked him if it was Spinner. I don't think it is just Stockholm Syndrome, he knew Spinner didn't want to be any part of what was being done, and someone snuck that tracking device into that bar and had the kid swallow it."

"Hold on, you mean the other tracking device we used as confirmation of where the villains were was in..."

"Kota Izumi's stomach," the Detective confirmed.

"You think Spinner was one of the kids in that brothel case or something similar," reasoned All Might, "and All for One's coercion ended up pushing Spinner too far.

"Pretty much... Won't know for sure unless he can be interviewed."

"That's still..."

"Messed up," he agreed, "Yeah, but it also means that he'd be more than willing to point out who willingly raped the kid, even testify against them so the kid wouldn't even have to take the stand. However, if I'm right, from a legal standpoint, Spinner would be a victim in all of this also at least when it comes to Kota."

At that moment, All Might's phone beeped, notifying him of a text message that he quickly read through.

"What is it?"

"Young Midoriya, he let me know that most of the class including young Bakugo passed, though Bakugo is going to be taking a remedial course..."

U.A. Bus: En-route

Bakugo watched Kota Izumi withdrawing into himself again with genuine concern, though he'd never admit it to the others. "Squirt, quit zoning out..."

"Oh, sorry..."

"Look you can trust FIDO over there to protect you, he's floating around you like a mother hen," commented Bakugo, "Also we won't let anything like that happen to you again, okay." As irritating as Kota's hero-worship had been, Bakugo knew the kid had been through too much for him to blow up at without feeling like a total ass.

"T-that smell... I didn't tell Izuku this, but I t-thought O-one of the Shiketsu s-students smelled like one of the v-villains," commented Kota.

"Tell me what happened now," Bakugo ordered and so Kota explained to him what had happened earlier. After he had finished, Bakugo's eyes narrowed, "You should have waited for Deku, you were warned not to wander off on your own! It's a good thing the flying mutt was with you."

"I-I'm sorry," said Kota, "I guess I over-reacted."

"You better remember next time Squirt," ordered Bakugo, "We don't know all the quirks the villains had, so don't let down your guard and don't go off alone."

Alleyway:

A brown-haired girl walked down the alley as her face started to melt while she punched in a number on her cell phone. "So how'd it go?"

"Yeah, I couldn't get any of Midoriya's blood like you wanted," she commented, "Though you remember the cutie, I saw him."

"Why didn't you grab him? It would have caused a huge uproar against the heroes."

"You're not going to believe this, there was some weird flying robot that looked almost like a dog," she grimaced.

"Kurogiri could have still warped you out."

"Anyways then Midoriya showed up, I don't think I could succeeded since I don't know what the robot could do."

"Oh well, the fact we infiltrated the exam alone is enough to cause unease, hurry back."

"Something else, did Dabi have to..."

"I think flame-brain over-reacted, I'll talk to you about this later."

"Okay see you soon!" she replied gleefully before hanging up and started skipping while quietly singing.

Temporary Hideout:

"I over-reacted?" asked Dabi incredulously.

"Sensei pushed Spinner too far," sighed Tomura.

"He was probably going to betray us already," argued Magne, "I just wish we could have made sure the snitch was dead, instead of his flaming body falling into the river and us having to relocate."

"I actually feel bad for him/Good Riddance to that traitor!" said Twice.

"Yeah, I probably shouldn't have recruited him, oh he had an ax to grind against heroes, but he could be too kindhearted at times," sighed Tomura, "Hey Mustard haven't heard you voice an opinion in all of this..."

"Really," the boy looked thoughtful for a moment, "I think Dabi kinda jumped the gun, I wanted to know why he ratted us out before setting him ablaze," the boy shrugged, "but no use cryin over it now."

"Compress?"

"I think your Sensei had all of you go a little too far," the thief commented, "I mean it wasn't like we were going to abduct the kid to give him milk and cookies, but I think you all went too far."

Detective Tsukauchi's Car: At U.A.

"Thanks for the ride," said All Might beginning to get out of the car.

"Don't mention it," said the Detective as his phone started to ring,

"It never fails, duty calls," joked Toshinori as the Detective answered the phone.

"Okay, Tamagawa what is it?"

"We have Mr. Iguichi in custody."

"That's good, I'll interview him at the station," said the Detective as All Might loitered to figure out what was going on.

"That may be hard to do, he's in a medically induced coma... I-It's bad, he has burns over a large part of his body, if it wasn't for his physiology, he'd be dead, they still don't know if he'll make it."

"Dabi..."

"I agree sir, I think they figured out he's the one that tipped us off."

"Okay, have armed guards outside his room," ordered the Detective, "and keep me posted." He hung up.

"Well?"

"The good news is we have Spinner in custody, which leads to the bad news, it looks like the other League members tried to kill him," he looked at All Might, "They're currently not sure if he'll make it."

Notes:

Special thanks to fencer29 for reviewing parts of this chapter.

This is a long chapter that covers a lot of bases. I figured Bakugo would get his provisional license earlier than canon, partially because he has some different motivations here. Fighting villains is more up his wheelhouse, and he wouldn't get docked for the Shiketsu student's reckless behavior.

As far as All for One's conversation with All Might, I figured it would delve into being extremely creepy and I didn't want to go there.

As far as Bakugo getting his Provisional License by 1 Point, well I thought that the deductions in the beginning wouldn't have been quite enough to fail him, if not for the blunder of Inashi Yoarashi, he probably would have. He did end up with a concussion so he couldn't yell without getting a splitting headache.

Bakugo's interactions with Kota may seem as out of character, but remember Bakugo has an idea of what Kota went through, so he's trying to be extremely patient with the kid.
