The Daughter of Bad Luck

Volume 1 Chapter 3 - Survival Class 101

'Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning,' - Albert Einstein.

Day two for the first-year students, Team RWBY & JNPR are having their dinner in the canteen,

Ruby looks at her scroll and a certain text caught her eye, she blinks twice.

"Uh Yang," Ruby says. "Does your scroll also say 'survival class' with Prof Branwen too?"

"What?" Yang spoke. "Let me see?"

She gets out her scroll and compares with Ruby's, they match.

"But isn't she on the other side of Vacuo or something? Yang questioned.

"Who are you talking about?" Blake asked, looking up from her book.

"The person who is teaching us next is our cousin," Ruby says with a wide smile.

"You've got to be joking?" Weiss replied.

"Take a look for yourself," Yang says, pointing at her scroll.

They get there scrolls out too.

"Prof Branwen?" Blake says.

"Branwen?" Weiss muttered. "Why does that name sound so familiar?"

"Oh, this is great we haven't seen her in ages," Ruby says, jumping up and down on her seat in top speed, Yang having to place her hand on Ruby's head to stop her bouncing.

Not before long they clear up their plates and head for their next class. Once they and the other students walk into the classroom, no teacher, only a longsword placed on the desk near the boards, so they just take their seats and wait.

"Good everyone's here," Hawke says walking in. "Sorry I'm little late couldn't get away from Goodwitch," She says as she walks to her desk while taking her cloak off and placing it behind her chair. "Once that lady talks about the rules there's no stopping her."

"Right," she picks up a piece of chalk. "Well, I'm Prof Branwen, and am going to be teaching you lot how to survive on your missions when you leave Beacon and out there killing Grimm," she says as writes on the centre blackboard

"We already know how to survive," a male voice spoke out rudely.

RWBY and pretty much the whole students turned their gaze to the boy who spoke.

Hawke finishes writing with a underline, she throws the chalk right into the student's forehead, he holds his forehead in pain.

"Winchester is it?" Hawke questioned as she turns around, facing her class. "I've been doing my job battling the Grimm longer than you, I've seen things that will make you shit a brick, so if you or anyone else in this room think they can stay alive for more than 5 minutes, then don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out."

He didn't move, nobody dared moved.

"Right as I was saying, when I mean surviving, I'm talking about if things did not go according to plan on your mission, because I can say from experience," she points to the scar on her face. "Anything can go wrong in one single moment,"

"For when you go on missions, even while here at Beacon the worse can happen to you or your teammates, and I know what you lot are thinking, and I'm stopping you lot right there. Aura while good, cannot always safe you, what if you come across a high level of Grimm just after you've fought against a horde of the weaklings?"

Several students are about to raise their hands to answer her, but Hawke carries on to say.

"Your Aura would reach zero the moment the stronger Grimm smacks you in the face, that is why you need to save your Aura and be wise, and only use it in little amounts at a time that will help you live longer, and to risk any farther injuries."

Hawke watched some of the student's reaction to the fact.

"Before I continue does anyone here have a healing semblance of some kind?"

Nobody raised their hand, several students looked around at the other students.

"No? Really? Right, I would like everyone to take notes because this is important, next lesson we are going to go into the Emerald Forest to test your knowledge on the plants."

"How is a stupid plant going to save us?" Cardin remarked.

Hawke unsheathes Silver Claw, throws her short sword and it hits his desktop, surprising not only him but everyone as well, making them lean back in their seats, besides from Ruby and Yang.

"What the Hell!"

"The stupid plants as you put it could save not only you, the lives of your teammates," Hawke walks towards Cardin's desk.

"And it's my job that none of you end up in a body-bag before you leave the school ground, speak out of term one more time and I will make sure your training session with Goodwitch is a living Hell," she says after removing her blade from his desk. "Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes Sir! I mean Professor!"

"Good," she says, putting her sword away and walks back to the board.

"As I was saying again, once we enter the forest the plants that you'll find and recognises, you well be gathering them and make a medic paste for cuts and bruises, and yes you will be marked on the making part as well as finding the correct plants," Hawke carries on, and writes down on the second blackboard.

The students take notes quickly, Hawke smirks knowing that she got her message to the first years, this is a life lesson, to prepare them for the harsh part of being a Huntsman or Huntress. And that she is not going to sugar coat it either or go easy on them.

The whole class Hawke began to explain how the lessons will be about recognising plants, herbs, how to treat different wounds from different types of Grimm, which plant can help you or kill you, along with how to get out of situations where you are in the middle of nowhere, how to find food and clean water etc.

Near the end of the lesson, she starts to write on the blackboard for the students to copy.

"These three plants that we will be going to find next lesson in the forest, I want everyone to research and remember what they look like," Hawke turns to the class. "And if anyone thinks about skipping the lesson I'll ask Prof Goodwitch to pick your detention, so you better have a good enough reason for not attending."

The bell goes, the last lesson of the day is over.

"Class dismiss, team RWBY stay behind I like a word with ya."

Once the last student left the room, the sisters rushed and tackled Hawke into a group hug, Hawke lifts them both off their feet with no effort, they laugh as Hawke spins them around once.

"It's good to see you two," Hawke says, putting the two girls down, still hugging them tightly. "You girls have gotten taller."

"So, they are related." Weiss says with a sweat drop on her head.

"How have you've been Big Coz," Ruby exclaimed.

"Well, I'm stuck teaching my two favourite little cousins for the next four years, how do you think I feel," she replied happily while ruffling up their hairs.

"We are your only cousins," Yang says while removing Hawke's hand from her hair.

"All the more reason why you're my favourites," she replied.

"Which reminds me of something," she looks at Ruby.

"Uh?"

She punches on the crown of Ruby's head, Weiss and Blake's eyes widen at the sudden change; Yang backs away.

"You little idiot! What the Hell where you thinking fighting a crime lord on your own."

"Owwww!" Ruby whines as a bump appears on her head. "Did you have to hit me with your right hand?"

"I could hit you again with my left if you want!"

"No thank you!" she replied, using her semblance to hide behind Weiss.

"You dolt I'm not a human shield," Weiss exclaimed.

"Well, are you going to introduce me to your teammates?"

"Right," Ruby replied still hiding. "This is my team partner Weiss."

"And this is my team partner Blake," Yang says while giving Blake a side hug around her shoulders.

"It's nice to meet you both, names Hawke."

"Wait a minute," Weiss replied. "You're that Hawke Branwen?"

"The one and only," Hawke replied with a smirk. "How is Snow Queen doing?"

"Snow Queen?"

"Your sister, who else?"

"You have a sister?!" Ruby and Yang sync.

"Of course, I have a sister," Weiss replied with a huff. "What I want to know is how you know Winter?"

"Well, you can say that we have meet up for a few fighting matchings every now and then."

"Did you whop her butt?" Yang asked.

"You know it," Hawke replied.

The two fist-bump with smug grins.

"What!?" Weiss shouted. "I find that hard to believe my sister would lose to someone like you."

"Oh, don't get me wrong," Hawke says with her hands up in defence. "Your sister kicked my ass a couple of times."

Weiss smiled with pride.

"But at the moment, I'm winning by a match or two if I'm not mistaken."

Weiss glares at Branwen, Ruby and Yang giggle at the Heiress, Blake hides her smirk.

"Anyway, how did your last mission go? I thought you were in Vacuo?" Yang asked.

"Well, the Grimm where no problem," Hawke replied with her arms crossed. "Still got a few bruises out of it, and the travellers made it back home safely."

"Have you seen Uncle Qrow lately?" Ruby asked.

"Sorry Little Rose, I've not seen him for some time, but he calls me every now and then, speaking of, how's Uncle Tai?"

"Oh, you know," Ruby replied. "Dad is just… Dad."

"Ah say no more," Hawke replied, knowing how the man is. "Now girls, just because I'm going to be a teacher, does not mean I'm going easy on ya, you two better work your butts off, and try not to call me by name, it'll be a little awkward if every student knew we were related."

"Why?" Yang questioned. "Afraid we are going to embarrass you cousin."

"Oh, you got that backwards Little Cousin, one wrong move and every living soul on the grounds will know every embarrassing thing you did at the age of 3."

"Understood," Yang quickly replied.

Blake and Weiss looked at each other, wondering what did happen.

"Plus, it's not to embarrass Ruby with the attention, you know what she is like."

"Hey, I'm not that bad!"

Hawke and Yang raise an eyebrow at Ruby.

"Why are you two looking at me like that," Ruby asked while her eyes narrowed.

"No reason," Hawke and Yang sync.

Hawke notices the time.

"Oh, you girls better get going, or else Goodwitch will put us all into detention."

Hawke hands a piece of paper to Ruby.

"Here is my room number in the school, if you two need anything be sure to see me before curfew and not after, got it?"

"YEP!" the sisters replied, with a salute.

"Alright dismiss," Hawke replied saluting.

She turns to face Weiss and Blake.

"And the same goes to you too as well," Hawke says. "If there is anything you need, my door is always open."

There you go, I hope I've capture the bonding between the three girls, and I'll do more in future chapters.
